It was a nice attempt, but it's tough to preface your film with "no flesh shall be spared" and then have the action confined to a tiny apartment. Due to budget constraints, a lot of flesh was spared, apparently. And pardon my ignorance, but since when has Haiti been under "American control?"

Norton is excellent in Down in the Valley
by IndustryKiller!
Sep 26th, 2006
05:27:49 AM
As always. The guy is just a powerhouse on the screen. The film itself is a bit meandering and the last 20% or so of the film would work if it wasn't part of the same 80% that came before it. As a character study of Norton's "Harlen" it works though.

by LaudnerGomez
Sep 26th, 2006
06:02:24 AM
...and DOWN IN THE VALLEY would've been much more effective had THE KING not opened in the same month. Very different, yet very similar films... buy VALLEY's ending is wayyyyy more goofy. ------ Truthfully, Norton needs to try something different with his acting. His recent roles show a reluctance to give himself over fully to the thrill of acting. He giving half-assed work in unremarkable stuff. ---

Because I highly doubt it'll encapsulate the same mood and feelings that the original, ultra low budget Henry has. i love lugosi and karloff, and i own both of the previous editions of these classics, but damn if these don't look tempting. as does the reissue of chain saw, which i have the meat package from a few years ago. and i have the nightmare box set, so i'm not too jazzed over the new version. i will recommend the boris karloff box set which came out last week, as well as the inner sanctum mysteries, and the exclusive sci-fi box set from best buy, which contains the incredible shrinking man, tarantula, the mole people, ect. but only if you are a fan of such things.

I think Ed Norton is one of the hammiest actors working today. He may evoke the traditional character actor bravado of Hoffman or De Niro or Pacino, but that acting style seems dated now. The performances he's received so much acclaim for - Primal Fear, American History X, Fight Club...in every role, you can feel him acting the hell out of it, and they're all over-the-top. For some reason he has a devoted following (Moriarty's "I don't think anyone would argue" comment is a perfect example), I'm sure I'll receive much venom based on this opinion - but why do people let him get away with crap like Red Dragon, The Score, and Death to Smoochy when he's not a very good actor in the first place?

This talkback is like "Idiocracy" in action. Are you kidding me? That many people have nothing better to say than "first"? Someone really needs to compile a book (with headshots) of all the supposed firsters who weren't actually first and call it "Planet of the Apes". In fact it should probably include the real firsters as well, who are no less retarded, just luckier.

I actually saw this flick at the premier at AFI Fest a couple of years back and it left me annoyed. That's not to say that it isn't a good movie, but every twist and turn is telegraphed soooo much that there is no sense of surprise to anything that happens. It's a good movie that could have been great. Ed Norton and Evan Wood do a great job in it, but I think the inexperience of the director shows through... that's just my opinion, though.

..i got my copy of the 5-disc in the mail today, and i can't wait to watch it. i've had a fuzzy slp-speed bootleg for the longest time, so this is going to be a real treat. and those documentaries--mmm delicious. Richard Stanley was featured prominently on the second disc of Van Bebbers MANSON FAMILY and all three docs are discussed. i never thought in a million years i would ever get to see them. Stanley is one of my favorite directors. i'm fucking thrilled, you have no idea. hopefully putting DUST DEVIL on dvd will finally give it some much-deserved attention. and maybe, hopefully very soon we will see a remastered directors cut of HARDWARE, which is also brilliant. and while we're on the subject, could someone please restore Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED to its original glory? before 20th Century Fox had to stick their stupid greedy mainstreamy cocks in it.

Hahah. You must be kidding. This film functions as parody at best, and seriously, when you look at it in that way, it's probably the best parody of horror ever made. Come on, it's even got the patented "drop down on the knees and scream NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO at the sky" moment. It's fucking hilarious.

...and very tonally off-color performances, but that doesn't mean it didn't work. The film moves into crazy territory in the last 30-45 minutes, but at least it stuck to its guns. And Ms. Wood is as irrestible as ever, both performance-wise and...well...you know.
The Lake House (***SPOILERS***)

My problem with the Lake House was the ending. I'm willing to go along with the idea of a time-travelling mail box. All movies require some suspension of disbelief (an archeologist who can take on the German army single handedly, a war that took place long time ago in a galaxy far far away, a cyborg that travels from the future to save the man who will defeat the machines in the future, etc.) All I request is that the movie make sense WITHIN the logic of the movie. They don't have to be "realistic" (by definition, fantasies aren't realistic--that's why they're fantasies) but they do have to hold together by their own logic. When they don't, that's when they fail. And that leads me to the ending (***SPOILER AHEAD***). According to the ending, Keanu Reaves avoided the bus that hit him but, as far as the world is concerned (the world meaning his family, his business and his friends), he did die that day. Two big questions with that statement. First, considering there were people all around him, how was this pulled off? Did he fake a bus accident? Second (assuming you can answer the first), why would he do that? Personally, if I faked my own death for a year just to have a big romantic moment one year from now, people wouldn't go "awwwwwww, that's sweet". Instead, they would be pissed at me for making them grieve at my own death for my own selfish reasons. And the woman I loved would say "you made me think you were dead?!?!?!?! Insensitive jerk!!!" When viewed in that light, that makes 1) the ending impossible; 2) Keannu Reeves' character a selfish, insensitive jerk. Not exactly the ending the producers were intending.
