The only thing controversial about it was that no one had the balls to ask Mel the tough question. It was on everyone's mind but he just kept getting softball after softball. Just a lot of ass kissing and then he snubbed everybody by having Harry ask people to stay in their seats so he could leave and get back to drinking or whatever he had to do that was so important at midnight. He was definitely tweaking - picking at his ears, hair and being a little weird. He didn't look like he was doing well. Plus the film didn't fit with the festival. Basically, he came off like an a**hole, which is essentially what he is. His true colors were showing and we were all stupid to think he had changed. Glad to know he's gone now.

He had the audience laughing with his ussual quick wit and self depreciating humor. i wasn't there, I just listened to the podcast, but it's obvious it went great and was a special treat for the audience.

Seriously. All a filmmaker has to do is paint his brainless piece of crap with a coat of "topicality" and suddenly he's taken seriously by all the deluded fanboys like Harry, who don't feel as guilty when they can justify their orgiastic, sub-intelligent wankfests as "serious filmmaking". Fuck this. Apocalypto will be just like Mel's previous films -- a grotesque, fetishized melodrama that does nothing innovative thematically but cons the ape cage into thinking it's some kind of statement on current events. Yeah, and Talladega Nights was a brilliant dissection of Muslim-Christian fundamentalism and opposition. Hoo-haa!!!!

Give the man a chance. Not only has he managed to make the least spiritual, most gory life of Christ ever, but there's the battle with the booze to consider. Mel's having a rough time; let's all remember the good times. Mad Max? The first two Lethal Weapons? And as for the Jew comments: how come it's OK to bash every other religion on the planet except Islam and Judaism? I though America was founded on decent priniciples, one of the finest being "freedom of speech". Well, this should mean we are all free to say anything we want. And if Mel wants to be stupid about the Jews, go let him. It's just an opinion. When you start limiting opinions, you're one coup away from a dictator state. And if you're sure in your beliefs and your religion, don't be offended when you hear Mel ranting about your beliefs - go home and watch the South Park "Passion of the Jew" episode again. You'll laugh your arse off, and all this will be a bad dream. That is all. The Spud abides.

Consider the following individual: Mr. X is profoundly uncomfortable with black people, but because he's a Communist, tells himself that when the revolution comes he's just going to have to suck it up and deal with being equal to black people, in the perfect classless society that will follow the revolution. Is this person also a Neo-nazi, in your opinion? If so, you're even more stupid than I thought you were. Mere racism is not the same as white supremacy. White supremacy has a political component, insofar as it calls for the active subjugation of non-whites and of Jews using private terror and eventually state terror. That means it is entirely possible to be a racist without being a white supremacist. Heck, your average Democrat in Massachusetts is a union member who tells nigger jokes but then votes for Ted Kennedy. Are they all neo-Nazis? Of course not. They're just dumbasses. There's a difference.

You called Gibson a neonazi. If you review my initial post on the subject, I took issue with that designation. I'm sure lots of people hate me, but as long as they leave me alone, I don't really give a shit. Hate away. Knock yourself out.

I am mortified that some of you actually believe that a person can separate his personal views from his professional life. We are all human, and at some point the way you think of people is going to affect the way you work with them. We have to hold people accountable for their actions, whether or not they make good movies, write good books, or produce hit records.

When discussing art, you have to separate things sometimes. Birth of a Nation and Triumph of the Will are extremely racist in their messages, but are still regarded as being brilliant works, and are important to film history. Mel's case isn't NEARLY that extreme, but the same arguments applies. Polanski may have slept with a 15 year old, but his movies are still amazing. The personal beleif/actions and the professional work should (ideally) be separate. But if the personal actions are so personally offensive to you, that you can't distance yourself from them when watching the movie, then that's fine and I wouldn't blame you for it. Nobody should tell you how you should feel. Personally, I can put his beliefs out of my mind and enjoy the movie. I think it sounds pretty cool.

The interview sounds like your standard Q&A involving a film, its director, and its star. That said, Gibson's personal life is still nearing the shambles. The recent heeding bickering between many of the talkbackers here has actually made my anticipation grow more. Earlier in the year, I was sure this movie would suddenly signal to Hollywood that perhaps Mel is a hack director - yet fairly good actor - dedicated to making his films into torture porn for the extremist masses. Now that I know this film cements this idea, I have to watch how he does it; and then proceed to return here and talk with some of the other cretins with the same righteous beliefs and Mel-protection.

He's the only one in entertainment who's actually speaking about shit that's wrong. This country is at war and people are dying for lies. If John Lennon were here, this would not be goin' on. Mel doesn't have to be articulate. He just knows when something is right and when he must speak on it. A man has to protest when something is in his heart. Not like these cowards that are out now all on the fence, afraid to take a stand. Mel ain't crazy. He's a man. And he's speaking out. Something that's frowned upon in the new pro-homo entertainment industry. No offense. It's like the backlash that Brando got for saying Hollywood was run by Jews. That's a fact. What's racists about that? What's anti-semitic about that? It's a simple factual observation. Every studio. Every agency. CAA, WMA, ICM, Endeavor, Paradigm, Gersh. All Jews. That's a fact. Nothing racist. Does the problem REALLY arise when you raise people's awareness? Is that the crime? What IS racist is the fact Hollywood properties are made for the world. For every race on the planet. And only one small group of people -- those who are Jewish -- are creating that entertainment. This means that entertainment is skewed and bent to support their view of the world. --------------------------- Hmmmm. Think about that. This is not fair. And this is what is really racist. Small pointer: When discussing Jews, to avoid negative and distracting recourse refer to the group as "Jewish people" and not "Jews."
