Some Spoilers - I saw this movie too on Wednesday night. So scary cos it's so realistic. There were a coupla of great steadicam shots, that one mentioned above which is truly amazing - you cannot believe the shot goes on for that long and also I think there is one where he is trying to escape in a car that won't start that is teeth grindingly tense to watch. Clive Owen is an unusual leading man in this as he doesn't seem to give much of a shit. For much of the film he doesn't engage in a lot of heroics - he doesn't carry a gun. He gets by on his smarts all this while wearing flip flops. There is a beautiful moment near the end of the film when all the fighting stops when the cry of a child is heard. But the potential for sentimentality is undercut when it all kicks off again seconds later. This is really a great film. I was quite surprised by it. I thought it was going be more of a sci-fi flick but it is quite grounded in reality. It belongs more to the thriller genre as there are really great shocks and twists.

There are a couple of fake one-shot sequence with hand held camera. The finale one following Clive Owen to the rescue of the baby in the detention camp, while masterfully choreographed is too long and you risk to lose the emotional grasp of the scene. The one that made me go "Wow, how did they shoot it?" is the one in the car with the camera going back and forth and turning to follow the dialogue exchanges between the characters and then the accident that happens outside.

...that the brave Billy Ash was able to sneak into the secret underground bunker where they screened this forbidden film and then make it to an unsecured computer terminal to post this review outside of Britain's firewall, where AICN's agents were able to decode it. Perhaps a pirate DVD rip will make it onto the P2P networks. What? It was shown for free on UK TV?

Hmm. This seems to be a rather large departure from PD James' novel. I guess it's probably for the better, as the novel really isn't too conducive to a movie as it's written. Sounds like it's going to be excellent, though.

Yeah, too bad Bush and Blair ruined it. Those UK home-grown terrorists blowing up the subway or all those polls showing 48% British muslims consider themselves more Islamic than British don't have much to do with all the ill-will going about. You're just a worried victim. I bet the Pope made you feel bad, too. It is easy to blame people in the government, because you can do something about them. Not so easy to confront the more enigmatic, dogmatic and quite frankly dangerous problems of radicalized ideology and the destruction of a cultural identity. Sigh. After all the tripe at the UN this week, I am bit tired of the victomology angle. That being said, I will be in line to see this on opening day and perhaps I too will come away in mortal fear for my civil liberties. Alas.

UCKNOW, India -- Soldiers were on 24-hour guard at the Taj Mahal after officials received a letter threatening to blow up the monument, officials said Friday. Asked if a British Muslim was allowed to carry out a "terrorist attempt" in a foreign country, Muhammad said "That is another story." He added: "We don't make a distinction between civilians and non-civilians, innocents and non-innocents. Only between Muslims and unbelievers. And the life of an unbeliever has no value. It has no sanctity." Bakri is, sad to say, on firm ground in Islamic theology and law on that one. It was important to see accusations of terrorism in their proper context, he said. "If we give money to needy women and children, they say they are the families of terrorists. But where do the terrorists come from? Zimbabwe? No. They are people from here. And they are our brothers, the terrorists."

Since when does AICN give fawning intros like "we sincerely thank Billy for his time and effort"? For a "progressive" site that goes on and on about Christian censorship (and anal sex with Angelina Jolie), you guys sure are quick to kiss ass when a Muslim writes in. I too hate to see civil liberties compromised, but perhaps if Billy could spread the word among his fellow Muslims to drop the whole jihad business, we could make some progress on that front. As an atheist, I'm not looking forward to the movie selection at the Shariaplex.

I saw the film this morning and thought exactly the same as Billy - not since Fight Club have i been so moved by 2 hours of cinema. The action sequences are truly original and utterly stunning and had me shaking in my seat. Soon after, during an amazing scene in a London battlefield, i found myself in tears. Ever since I saw the trailer in July, I am eagerly anticipating this movie. I even got some goosebumps watching it. And Michael Caine is wonderful in it. Definitely the best sci fi film I've seen in years. I wonder why it's not coming out in the US til december? Police said two gunmen burst into the church on Saturday night and sprayed the congregation with automatic weapons fire before escaping. Hospital staff said on Sunday none of the injured, who included a four-year-old girl, were in imminent danger. The shootings happened just outside the town of Poso in central Sulawesi, an area that has acquired an unenviable reputation for inter-religious violence.

his own material if he wants to make a movie about the War on Terror/racism, rather than try and pimp it off the back of a literary property that does (splendidly well) something different? I'm not one of those tiresome cultists who think a novel is holy writ, but it would have been nice to see a film closer to James' novel - which is an oddity for taking some pretty grown-up thematic material (like religious faith, guilt at the death of a child, our social attitudes towards children and aging, how tenuous our respect for human life really is) that are seldom treated seriously in fiction period, let alone science fiction from a best-selling mystery writer.
"That Bush and BinLaden
by eveelcapitalist
Sep 23rd, 2006
03:36:27 AM
"That Bush and BinLaden "pervert their faith to motivate their fearful followers." That was the point of my post. From the text that I read, neither Jesus Christ nor Mohammed advocate murder or war; both were peacemakers. Can't say the same for Bush or Bin Laden (or Pope Ratzinger for that matter)." Firstly, it's Pope Benedict and not Pope Ratzinger. I'm not Catholic, atheist in fact, but that shit annoys me. Secondly, Mohammed was a military leader. He led armies in war. This is a well known fact. As well, the Quran does indeed advocate militarism. Jesus didn't give two shits about overthrowing governments and the like. He said shut up and pay your taxes. He was concerned with bringing Jews back to their roots. Mohammed needs to be looked at as a military leader. Even if you can say he was among the more enlightened military leaders of his time he still needs to be viewed in that context.======= # "Strike off their heads. Strike off their finger-tips! … because they defied God and his Apostle." (Sura 8:12-13) # "Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme." (Sura 2:193) # "Seize them and put them to death wherever you find them." (Sura 4:89) # "Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you." (Sura 9:123) # "When the sacred months are over, slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them; besiege them; and lie in ambush everywhere for them. If they repent and take to prayer and render the alms levy, allow them to go their way." (Sura 9:5) 9:73 "O Prophet, fight [j-h-d] the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be stern with them. Their abode is Hell, and what a terrible fate!" 9:123 "O you who believe, fight those of the unbelievers near you and let them see how harsh you can be. Know that Allah is with the righteous."=========== The point is Mohammed had no problem killing people. There's lots more shit in the Quran I'm sure, but I'm not a muslim. There's stuff like this in Judeochristianity as well. The Old Testament has plenty on wife beating and homo killing and so on and so forth. I'm not gonna be the one to lie and say islamofascists are "perverting their faith" cause really they're not. They love all that jihad shit I'm sure and probably glossing over any decent shit there might be but that's not my point or my problem. The fact is modern Jews and Christians tend to write off all that bad shit and say, "Well it just was the way they were then but these days people know better." I'm still waiting for the Muslim to come along and say, "Yeah, Mohammed went around and lopped off his share of heads, but ya know people were pretty fucked up back then and thankfully we all know better these days." Thirdly, and cause this annoys the hell out of me as well, Bush is hardly a theocrat. If Bush is a theocrat, then I'm the Archbishop of Cantebury. Seriously, the moment people talk about Bush's so called religious radicalism I tend to stop listening. The guy is a Sunday Christian if I ever saw one. And he's a Methodist. www.umc.org A veritable bastion of radicalism there! Seriously, a little intellectual honesty goes a long way.

This might be the science-fiction event of the year. I love dystopias; they're the best kind of horror film because they're the only cold intellectual horror. Watched 1984 (the Hurt-Burton one) recently and the production design and use of London locations in that film was excellent. I hear there's a remake in the works but I can't see how you could improve on the performances, or those of Peter cushing and Donald Pleasance in the earlier BBC film.

... that Islam is a religion of peace. How come Muslims angrily march through the streets burning flags and two students from my university (Kiel) recently tried to blow up trains just because of freaking CARICATURES? I have never seen any comparably enraged reactions after any of the incredibly bloody Islamistic attacks. Islam is tolerant as long as the believers are in the minority. As soon as they are in power violence is the only reaction against Christians and Jews that they can conceive of. There are exceptions. There are more moderate groups. But to me violence seems to be a general tendency within Islam. And by the way: As a German I am deeply ashamed of my country's past. But to call Ratzinger a Nazi is just plain stupid. I am very critical of religion in general but Benedict's criticism of Islam was justified. He was in the Hitler-Jugend as a child by the way. That doesn't make him a Nazi.

Us Brits. do the dystopian thing really well; once it seemed this sort of suppression of rights in the UK would only ever be fiction. Now it is becoming reality. ID cards anyone? I am not a Muslim, I am an aetheist. I am equally intolerant of all religions but not of the people that practise them. I can't understand why people in the UK are so terrified of Muslim terrorists. The IRA were far more succesful at killing people in this country. They almost got Thatcher. We didn't start blaming all Catholics or all Irish people for the actions of these people. And we didn't live in fear of terrorism as apparently we do now. Or so the government tell us. I'll see the film on Monday night. Read the book years ago. Enjoyed it; thought it very Wyndham-esque.

Thanks for wasting space in a talkback by going on and on about a film you haven't seen yet, based solely on one (or maybe two or three if you looked beyond this very page, although that I highly doubt) review, then launching into a political/theological rant so misguided it's just fucking funny. i.e. "A 'few hundred thousand Iraqis' are mainly killed by their fellow peace loving muslims." First, a few hundred thousand have not died thanks to the terrorist quagmire the United States created when it invaded Iraq without any real plan of bringing stability to the nation. The numbers have, thankfully, been lower, though no less tragic. Tens of thousands were killed due to American military incompetence, and as many as a million Iraqi children were killed during the period in which Iraq was put under sanctions, as those in power (Saddam and his cronies) sat fat and happy. And what that has to do with this movie, aside from the reviewer's interpretation, is beyond me. Seems like you were just looking for an excuse to rant against Muslims. There are radicals and non-radicals, same as there are in Christianity and pretty much any other religion (although possibly not Buddhism... I'm yet to meet a radical Buddhist). Now do us all a favour and shut the fuck up about it. This is a talkback not a KKK meeting. It's not a news site, so stop posting shit your found on Google News. And you didn't own that last poster. You couldn't "own" a blind frog in your own bathtub.

They're most intriguing because the best come from the "If this goes on..." kernel--if something we're doing continues, THIS could happen. I'm not quite sure what the "this" of COM is, but the political subtext here, as with V for Vendetta, seems to have been grafted on to something that was written previous to its existence, namely the war on terror. (Don't worry, I'm not going to get all political.) I don't know if that has ever worked in a movie, because it means the filmmakers have to cut into the fabric of the existing work to insert their agenda. I thought 1984 (the Hurt/Burton version) was outstanding because it played by the book's rules. One didn't have to IMPOSE contemporary political ideas onto the material. The viewer could watch the movie as a pretty accurate interpretation of the book, and then think for him/herself "You know, this applies to us today." That's called "respecting your audience," and I'm afraid from what I've read that COM is going to fall into that same hole VfV did, which was to make a ranting piece of propaganda out of something that could have been a dangerously suggestive work of popcorn entertainment.
Saw this on Saturday

Saw this amazing movie on Saturday. It doesn't try to address politics head-on in the way, say, that V for Vendetta does. Cuaron gives the film so many layers, and so much to think about, that one's initial response can't help but be dictated by what one brings to it. Cuaron wrote a brilliant piece in London's Time Out magazine... One of the things he wrote is that he believe in details - he feels they are as important as the dialogue. And believe me, there are so many details in this brilliant film it's tough to know where to start. One finds oneself thingking about despair, hope, immigration, nature, growing old, resistance, activism, compromise... and I really feel I'm only scratching the surface. The other thing to say about the film is that it is at times very exciting, very moving, and, at the end, extremely full-on. The action scenes smack you around.
