I was kind of excited to see that because I loved the books, and the Dawn remake was cool, but to be honest, the video journal wasn't helping... If this were some fantasy movie or whatever, it would look eh, OK. I am just massively disappointed that we're finally getting a new movie about Thermopylae, and its some Frank Miller crap. This makes the Spartans look like bloodthirsty assholes. Not to mention the fact that hoplites were heavy infantry fighting with bronze breatplates, not barechested with their capes on. I saw some interview where one of the actors commented on how it was tough to fight with the cape on since it screwed everything up. Of course it did and the Spartans took the capes off to fight. I'd take something, anything close to realistic. At least make it something close to real life, like Gates of Fire, rather than having Ephialties be a monster and Leonidas just some guy who yells alot.

wow looks visually stunning and i here echos of mel gibson's braveheart scene where he rounds up all his soldier with that infamous speech. ...there isn't that much slo-mo (which always always takes one out of the movie's reality) in the actual movie. Because it looks amazing. Frank Miller should give lessons at those comic cons to the creators who bitch and whine about how Hollywood doesn't do their books properly--he obviously has the balls to give up the huge checks in favor of more control, and thus reaps greater benefits later. (And on top of all this, if you heard him on NPR on 9/11, you know he's not an anti-American jackoff.)

I'll defend the use of slow-mo as more than just a bit of flashy MTV style. See, when there is wire-work at play, it can become obvious that the speeds at which they jump/fall are not congruous with the laws of physics. Using slow-mo offsets the fakenes inherent in wire-work. Plus it looks cool. This looks visually stunning and I can't wait. And if you think it looks gay, then you better stay away from Frank Miller's book - they were all naked in that one.

...I sense that this is going to be one of those movies that you'll be accused of being "a hater" for not liking, so I'm just gonna speak my peace and get the fuck out of here, but that trailer didn't do it for me the way it apparently did for a lot of people. I certainly have no objections to its surrealism, so I don't know what it is about the look, but I just wasn't feelin' it. Could just be backlash towards the whole panel-by-panel thing that so many of us seem to think is necessary for a good comic book adaptation. Also, there was a line in there somewhere about the Spartans standing up for a "new age of freedom" or something? I don't know the historical context of the battle, so can anyone who knows tell me if that actually makes sense, or if that's just revisionism in order to make audiences more interested in the battle? Besides for that, no real qualms, I just didn't get into it. And to give myself a headstart before someone yells "hater," I like and look forward to plenty of movies. I just posted on 'The Blood Diamond' TalkBack about how I think that one looks good, for Pete's sake.

Visually. No doubt it's going to be a feast for the eyes. Quality of story, script, acting, etc... the jury is still out because I didn't get a good feeling on those levels from the trailer. But again, it LOOKS cool and innovative. I just hope the rest of the movie matches what appear to be awesome visuals.

His work is ridiculously stylised, and makes no attempt to look real in any way. To take a comic like 300 which is as much about the amazing look as it is the story and make it look everyday would be an injustice. Rodriguez showed that you can do justice to a comic's art when he adapted Sin City, this is just a similar work, the only different being that in Sin City the backdrops were all in black and white, they actually looked more false than the ones in 300 which are quite beautiful.

Well I don't know, I liked Sin City okay but I would've liked it better if it didn't look like some dudes wearing Halloween costumes doing a play in front of some video game footage projected on a screen. I know it can't be a documentary but there is a difference between the stylization of, say, film noir or something, and this kind of thing where the actors don't even look like they are standing inside the city that the movie is named after. I know it was a deliberate stylistic choice to make it look like a cheapass home made remake of Dick Tracy but what I'm saying is that it was not, for me anyway, a choice that completely worked. They have these classic gritty stories but then I am completely distanced from the grit and the scum because it is all so goofy looking I can't take it very seriously. For example when Marv drags a guy from a car you oughta be thinking "holy shit!" but instead you think "Ha ha, Mickey Rourke is wearing a Halloween mask doing a funny cartoon thing in front of a blue screen, what a fun time we are having with this silly fun." (paraphrase) I mean I liked it overall but I personally think these people are too literal with their comic strip books and oughta create a real world instead of a re-creation of a drawing. Anyway, like I said, I'll watch the movie, I just hope some of these talented directors remember you are still allowed to make movies where people look like they are standing in actual places, holding real objects, etc.

I don't mind the illusion etc routine I get that-try watching Bonanza, most of those inside Sets when they're meant to be outside in the Sierra Nevadas etc are awful-but here it just takes you outta the movie. Half an hour of Frank Miller's Sin City(TM-just to make the more rabid fanboys happy) the Movie-is fine. 2 hours of it? Kinda like running on a waterbed. No thanks. Spartans. Same idea. Its a valid point to be sure, however think of the vast majority of comic book adaptations which have already been made with no attempt to create the look and feel of the comic. Final Quality notwithstanding the Batman series, Both versions of The Punisher and especially more recent works like From Hell, Road to Perdition and suchlike went for the classic cinematic look rather than basing the visual ideal on a comic's look. There are only a handful of films which have actually tried to re-create the stories in such a stylised approach. Does it work completely? possibly not always, there were many moments when watching Sin City that I wished it had been filmed practically in a standard style, but in taking the route they did, it created a cinematic one-off which worked as much as a piece of art as a film. Personally I think 300 requires that degree of removal from reality, the stupendous odds involved add to the mythological leanings in the story, along with the hyper-stylised action and the several grotesquly formed characters.

I reckon the reason why epics always feature cut-glass British accents is because it sounds quite neutral and old-fashioned, whereas an American accent I always think sounds modern. Therefore it just seems a bit less distracting I suppose. As for the movie, looks like a great action flick - yeah, it ain't history, and yeah, those of us with an investment in Thermopylai might prefer a version of Gates of Fire, but I'm willing to take off my ancient historian hat to watch it, and think of it more as a Greek myth than history. Any sight of the phalanx in action on the big screen is a joy to behold; even the piss-poor Alexander had some good battle action, especially Gaugamela. Shame the rest fell on its arse.

...very much as I do about Sin City. It looks very much like the comic. Stylized backgrounds and all. They'll probably even capture the language exactly. And while those things will make it a very faithful recreation (not so much an adaptation), they won't necessarily make it a good film. I enjoy Sin City as a piece of experimental art. It shows what storyboards brought to life can be while simultaneously showing why comics shouldn't necessarily be translated directly to the screen. Miller's artwork is surreal to the point of unreality. His dialogue and narration are tinpan. Those things work in a comic. Not so much on film. Again, I dig on SIn City for what it is. And while I'd never call it a great movie, it does have the benefit of being original. This imitation of it...not so much.

Its interesting that arguably the best scene in Sin city was in fact the QT car conversation, wqhich eschewed the comic-frame stylism largely in favour of some basic dollying and handheld camera-work. I think that after 300 (assuming it is good) all will rest on Sin City 2 as it will be either the make or break of films made in this style. Because after not too long it'll become the mode of choice for every 2-button hack filmmaker, and it'll quickly become a fad that went out of fashion.

Vern, I hated Sin City for all the reasons you mentioned, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the effort made. The thing is, if you were a fan of "the drawings" you would understand that people hold certain works up as definitive of the medium and as iconic. Sin City is iconic in comic books, Frank Miller is an example of an iconic, larger than life artist. So when RR decides to intimately include him in the making of this film, the fans will rally behind it. The fact that this is shot in the same way, and with the same love for the source material has to be respected. Personally I'd have loved to see Sin City shot on practical locations and NOT at the same time as a kid's film, but it is what it is. And Mickey Rourke looked the way he did for a reason. I just wish his performance could have been better. 300 looks like a great film, and I'd hate to see you miss out on a great story because you have a bur up your ass about the way it was shot, or because you don't read "comic strip books". :(

...I think you're right on that QT scene (much as I hate to feed that guy's ego) being, from a film fan standpoint, the best in Sin City. But if you were just going at it as a film fan with no comic background, that probably still wouldn't be saying much. As a comic fan I enjoy what Sin City was trying to and did acheive more than I winced at the bad acting and general cheesiness as a film fan. So I will give Sin City 2 an automatic viewing at the theater (with expectations being that it will be more of the same). I guess my point was that I'd hate to see the innovations used by Rodriguez in the Sin City series become a movie fad that's cribbed by other film makers, because I don't think it's a particularly effective way to tell a story cinematically. I'm kind of torn on 300, because it's also a Frank Miller story and I dig the previous work of the director. I just wish he'd taken a different creative route. And I absolutely DO NOT want to see a Dark Knight Returns film done this way just because it, too, is a Miller story. I'd rather Nolan adapt that source material (and, yeah, that means some changes) for a future Batman flick in the style he's established.

vern - while i agree with you to a point, i also agree with the others who point out that really, this is a film for people who just flat-out love frank miller. it's like an ode to the style and feel of his work. as an illustrator, i think a lot of films made from graphic novels have such superior visuals (whether the film is good or not) to the illustrations - people tend to forgive a lot, was i the only person on earth who thought the illustrations in 'from hell' and 'road to perdition' were weak sauce? at least miller's work has a beautiful skill and energy to it that translates viscerally to the screen, even if it is over-stylized. it ain't shakespeare, it ain't real history, and it ain't - as someone above said - michael mann doing 'gates of fire.' but i'm sure it's a fun enough way to spend 2 hours.

I can't get worked up against the heavily stylized CGI work. If it had been an animated (or anime?) film would I have complained that it didn't look realistic? This is hybrid. It seeks to get the best from both animation and actors. It is what rotoscoping wanted to be. I may not like the results just as I may not be an animation fan but that wouldn't justify my arguing that it doesn't look realistic enough. Take it for what it is. It will be awhile before we have enough of a mature library of this medium to be able assess it within that context. Sin City, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and Star Wars 1-3. Small library.

This sorta thing makes white males look obviously weak. Like whenever's there's a chance available, white men will seize the oppurtunity to make themselves look larger than life. Like there's an infatution with being super because in actuality there's a weakness or a void. This is what is exposed when racism makes it to an action film. Am I supposed to like seeing him kicking someone non-white into that well. I mean what are these current filmmakers thinking?! Between shit like this and the soulless Superman Returns, I don't know if action filmmaking is moving forward. Check the Wachowskis': NO micro-editing, NO heavily hacked-up action scenes, NO disrepect of non-white people equals groundbreaking cinema. What the fuck are these new dudes thinking? I see where you all are coming from. I'm with Childe Roland. I think it's cool that Mr. Rodriguez did such a ridiculous stunt on Sin City. I always appreciate people trying something new. I thought the movie was very flawed but it was interesting enough that I went back and saw it a second time. But I felt the results of this experiment show that it's a bad idea to adapt things so literally into live action. It looks kind of cool but it doesn't work for storytelling. To tell the story of Sin City effectively you should believe that Sin City is a real place, a horrible place, like you would in a genuine crime movie. Even in other comic book movies like Batman you are able to believe in Batman City as being a real place, but the extreme stylization of that one done on a low budget to me sort of blew the potential of what I thought was a nice set of pulpy crime stories. Oh well. It might work better for this one since it's just supposed to be mythic and not gritty. And I'm sure it won't be quite as cheesy when the effects are finished and it's not in a shitty file format like that. (Unless they are planning to project it directly from ifilm, which seems to be the direction movies are going in.)

I'd been led to believe by folks here that this was pure awesome, but viewing that trailer is underwhelming. Lots of fake scenery, lots of shouting instead of acting, and it rapes history. I knew it isn't historically factual, but when you've got Spartans - the most vicious and tyrannical of the Greek states - shouting about fighting for freedom, and silly swords and armour looking like something from Lord of the Rings, its clearly designed not to build on what actually happened, but reinvent it for todays moviegoing assholes. And all the SHOUTING. I really hope the trailer combines every shouty bit there is in total, because if the film consists of shouting hardmen, I'm outta there.

I think it's a bit premature to judge how the well integrated the screen work is from a shitty low res vid bounced off another site. To be honest, a lot of the hand-wringing seems more like future-phobia rather than genuine criticism. It's not about this film, per say - it's about green screen replacing location; the medium's further digitization. Which is fair, but knowing the process behind something makes it that much harder to suspend disbelief, and I think a lot of folk find screen work more distasteful than ugly.

Action movies aren't taking a step backward. Remember Krull and the 60s Hercules movies. Remember Xena. Action movies have never had good action. For all the explosions we're still fundamentally at A-Team and V.I.P. still, even in movies. Now, the East can great some fine action movies but that's because their actors are first and foremost martial artists or gymnasts. We've had our Chuck Norris, JC Van Damme, and Steven Segal types but they are never, ever linked to money and talent behind the camera. On the other hand, Errol Flynn was a great swordsman (apparently) and Kirk Douglas would do his own stunts. Neither Stallone nor Schwarzeneger had any action 'skills' other than looking tough. We need our western Jet Li before we can have another renaissance of action films.

Neither Bruce Willis or Chow Yun Fat is a martial artist and yet name me an action movie better than DIE HARD or HARDBOILED. You can't do it. I love a good martial arts movie but the western style of action is also legitimate, where it is more contingent on getting a good badass than a guy who can do flips. That's what you need to be looking for is a new Charles Bronson or Lee Marvin.

These were hard men, not hardbodies. They were tough as nails because you just knew by the way they looked at you...by the cold glint in their eyes...that they could cut you down or knock you out without even a slight elevation in blood pressure. I agree to some degree - 300 ain't going to be history, but then, it isn't supposed to be. I'm an ancient historian and while I'd love to see Thermopylai on the big screen in all its historic glory (including crediting the Thespian soldiers who stayed and died with the Spartans and are always forgotten!), I think it's a bit extreme to say 300 is raping history and dumbing it down for a modern audience. Quite a few students are given a way in to ancient history by film and comic books - Gladiator caused a great increase in people wanting to learn about the Roman Empire, for instance - and while it ain't history, if it puts more asses on seats in my classrooms, I'm OK with it. People are discovering these great old stories through film, even if they are done in a real cack-handed manner (Troy), and if they go away and pick up a copy of the Iliad or Herodotus, then it can only be a good thing in my book. Just forget the historical side of things and view it as entertainment; that is, after all, what film is supposed to be - and in any case, 2500 years of interpretation and reinterpretation means we can never know the truth about Thermopylai, or indeed the Spartans, anyway. That's why why the subject is so rich and fascinating - we can all have our own ideas and nobody can tell us we're wrong!

They also had tough guys who clearly exhibit their humanity amongst the great action (a John Woo staple). With all the rah-rah, go get 'em-type hollers, we don't see that in this trailer. Although bred to be warriors, even the Spartans were human beings. BTW, Charles Bronson plays one of the best action heroes who shows his humanity in my favorite Western - Once Upon A Time in The West.

He played one of the Spartans and they shot it on location, so there was something to be said about steeping into the Spartans shoes. It was a weird feeling. Like they were being guided by the dead souls of these men. The original movie was pretty much on target with the historical aspect. Look at it this way, if it wasn't for King Leonidas and his 300 warriors. we'd all be using the Perisan alphabet. His battle was a delaying action that caused the Greek army to go after and take out the Persians. King Xerxes, wannabe tough guy, acted like a little bitch and ran off to leave his men to die.

I see where you are coming from Vern. However, if an action movie is a shoot em up with guns and lots of atmosphere, then the scene with cold stares work. However, when an action movie is the type that's based in the ultimate consummation of conflict -- a fight -- then we should be able to SEE that fight. Not quick cuts of thrown punches and reaction shots blended together with shaky cam. The action genre has many different subcategories: Shoot em up, Swashbucklers, Westerns, Car Chase, etc. What I'm saying it that when you put a spear and sword in a guy's hand. Let us see what he can do with it. Don't force feed us editing and try to pass it off as action. Again, see Neo in the chateau. That's where we should be in this day and age. We deserve to see the action. Not motion effects and editing. This movie does not promise to show us clear action. I would not expect this if The Matrix, Blade II and The Musketeer did not exist. Pull up the trailer to The Musketeer and you'll see what I mean. Long shots of action. In fact, I think when Harry reviewed The Musketeer he examined this. We should be allowed to see our action at this point and not just flashes and suggestions. If we must imagine what is happening, we should simply read the book... Sure the Moslems finished them off, but you had the final fight to the death from 607-629 between the Byzantines and Sassanids. The Eastern Romans had been driven back to their holdings in the Balkans and Carthage, most of the rest the Persians held. Heraclius came in, successfully won a brutal two-front war--see the Avars/Slavs eat up the Balkans and get nailed in 626 outside the Theodosian Walls for more--and was able to brutalize the Persians in their own home just before the Moslems kinda came in and re-took most of the Fertile Crescent a few years lator. You can thank Emperor Heraclius, his descendant Constantine IV and Leo III for us not all saying 'Allahu Admiral Ackbar' here in the West, along w/ Charles Martel etc too. Greek fire spewing Giant Robots are killer.

I have to admit I would be more interested in seeing a more factual accounting of the tale. It's often said that truth is tranger than fiction. And maybe that truth wont have a cool showdown with a giant wolf, but I would enjoy it more knowing this actually happened. I've known this story (The real story) since the 3rd grade. Apologies for the late reply at the end of the thread...The thing is, if they are going to use British accents in this swords and sandals epic (and please note that I think that a nice British accent is cool to listen to), mixed it up with English speaking actors with Greek and Italian accents or Iranian and Arabic accents via Lybia, Egypt and Syria - nations that were part of the Persian empire. For example, Ghassan Massoud's accent worked fine in Kingdom of Heaven. 300 is not a true history lesson, but at least including those other accents would really make it neutral because at least there is a reference to the cultures.

why would africans be in persia? PERSIANS were the white people. Indo-Iranian (sometimes called Indo-Aryan... yes, Hitler's Aryan... since the word Iran literally means Aryan). the Persians should be tall, blonde nordic-looking motherfuckers in this movie. Greeks were always light skinned with caucasian features, but they were not caucasians (Indo-Iranian) and always had dark hair (typical short, stocky white guy w/ dark curly hair, like you tend to see in all the art depicting Greece and Rome). the Persians NOW are mostly dark-haired caucasian-looking people cuz they mixed with Indians, Arabs, Jews, etc. etc. later. Greeks on the other hand, look as they've always looked. the Ottoman Turks didn't intermarry with them much, and the Turks were also an Indo-Iranian race out of Central Asia (i.e, aryan roots, they didn't look 'middle eastern' at all... but like the Persians they have since ruled and mixed with Indians, Arabs, Africans, etc.). if the graphic novel is keeping in line with this (greeks = white, persians = dark), i guess Mel Gibson isn't alone in Hollywood. ** btw, technically speaking Muslims would identify with the Greeks. Islamic civilization pretty much picked up where Greek left off. at that point, the Byzantine Empire was in Greece, which isn't really Greek (Byzantines and Germanic tribes in the rest of Europe were all Indo-Iranians who invaded out of Central Asia, true Greco-Roman civilization had disappeared)... the original Arab Muslims conquered Persia pretty quickly and assimilated it into Arab/Islamic culture.

The Greeks saw themselves in the middle. Also, ancient Greeks are on record stating that they were influenced by Egypt, so Islamic civilization actually built on the best that came before it - Egypt, Greece, Rome and China (via the Kublai Khan’s empire)…Now the Persians were an Indo-European speaking community, however, that in no way connects them to the blond haired conqueror myth.
