Minor crossover goodness if you're watching DC close. The alien villainess referenced by Archbishop Lobo in this week's 52 (#19)? The exact same as the one glimpsed in Mystery in Space #1 last week (look for the interleaved flashback panels recalling Comet's death. The first is purely the reflection in his eye before you know it's an eye, and which reflects his killer, the same villainess). This is how MiS spins out of 52. Also note how Comet was being attacked by a group of Manhunters in the first 3 pages. Those self-same Manhunters have been calling out to former Manhunter Mark Shaw and we should see development in that book when it returns in December. Also, I wouldn't be surprised at how things might tie in with the 3 GL books right now, especially Ion.

I had my entire review written before I ever looked at the Talkbacks. I smiled a bit at your post because I realized we were parroting each other a bit without even realizing it. You even mentioned the fur texturing on Tyrone but you geeked out over it and I thought it stuck out like a sore thumb because nothing else was as heavily textured as that. But still not a criticism. There was some nice color work on that issue.
Funny that..

But there were so many good parts to it they just stood out, I guess. Even Phil Balsman went the extra mile with the lettering; with all the telepathy going on, his design on the telepathy bubbles really added to the atmosphere and character (would Eye have been as cute without the purple bubbles?). About Tyrone's fur, I guess I geeked out mainly because it was so original, at least as far as what I've seen in comics so far. It is a bit more different than most everything else in there, but mixing that in with Davis' photoreal pencils of Tyrone really adds to his character, I think. I don't think slightly more solid coloring would have made him come across as personable, and that helps because he's the character that humanizes all the rest, especially since they're all basically stoic-noir types. As it is, judging by all the other color gradation and light-play going on throughout, I don't think it's as obstrusive as could be.

...so couldn't somebody put this at the top of the page instead of at the bottom only? I've looked for the damned thing faithfully every day since Wednesday & I still wouldn't know it's up if I hadn't scrolled down looking for something else! But enough of high dudgeon; as long as I'm here, I might as well make a contribution to the (hoped-for) discussion, or at least make it a trialogue.*** Buzz, although the Stan/Bendis comparison had never struck me before, I've thought numerous times that Grant Morrison was a non-artist Jack Kirby, throwing off ideas the way the Sun throws off solar flares & prominences. More proof that great minds are warped alike, (both Grant's & Jack's, and, er, Buzz's & mine).*** And Grant sparks off the other comment I want to make, responding to the Byrne quote about him in the Atom review. While I've read pieces "vast & cool & unsympathetic(TM H.G.Wells) " by both Morrison & Moore, I can't see how anyone could say they lack a visceral love for comics & its iconic characters who's read All-Star Superman by Grant or Supreme by Alan. These loving tributes could only have been written by people who imprinted on the Silver Age Superman like baby ducks on their mother. Tons of love there, palpable on the page. *** And since Thalya & I seem to be the only ones here in Cog Manor(of which these talkbacks are only an annex, of course), perhaps we, er, should get to know each other better. Come here often? (Ah, who am I kidding; I don't have the heart to ply someone with come-ons & double-entendres who can't tell if I'm kidding or not. But I'll bet John Donne would have excelled at it, right? "If we be two, we are two so/ As stiff twin compasses are two;/My soul, the fixed foot, makes no show/To move, but doth if th' other do./And though it in the center sit,/Yet when the other far doth roam,/It leans and hearkens after it,/And grows erect, as that comes home." Now there's a sweet-talker. (Seriously, nice to chat, Thalya; been reading ya since the days of Buffy talkbacks; always nice to see you here.

I saw these reviews up yesterday and noticed there was not one talkback posted. I just assumed there were site problems and no one could get on. Great bunch of reviews guys. Pity there is no link at the top of AICN for these. MiS is one of the best covers I've seen in a long time. Maybe I already mentioned this. I love the issue. Even The Weird was great. I agree about Tyrone. Some fantastic art and colour, but a little overdone there. Can't wait to read more. ***** I agree completely about Lone Ranger. But the art was good enough for me to keep at it. Felt way too much like a trade opening, you're right. You kind of feel like an idiot for spending cash on it and not waiting for the trade. ***** And Detective, again, another review this week I totally agree with. I still had fun with it. And even though the artwork took up space that could have been given to more story, I enjoyed looking at it. A really cool story that was over too quick. Look forward to Penguin's appearance next issue - that looks like a great cover. ***** Oh yeah, does Cog Mansion have a confessional booth? Coz I bought that Civil War Files book ...

I love this site, but there are some problems with the comic reviews. The fact that DC is publishing a graphic novel by Gilbert Hernandez is actually a pretty significant event. He's a major figure in the industry. Although, the review for Sloth is honest and well meaning, the fact that the reviewer has never read any of Hernandez's work is a litle disappointing. It's like a review of The Departed done by someone unfamiliar with Martin Scorsese. And the comics chosen seem to be kinda random... Why no Savage Dragon? ...or Deathnote? ...or Richard Corben's Haunt of Horror?

so few reviews and talkbacks because...
by Homer Sexual
Sep 18th, 2006

Whenever this comes up late, it gets less traffic, but the lack of a listing at the top of AICN is probably the major reason for so few talkbacks. The minor reason is that there are few reviews (only 3 cheap shots? I love the cheap shots!) On other topics, I think I agree with the idea of Morrison having too many ideas and Bendis too few, which is why I can't really imagine a team-up occuring. Good point about Sloth, too. The reviewer should have had a little familiarity since I started reading L&R at age 21 and am now 41. Plus, that book came out at least a month ago. I think the lateness of the reviews is an ongoing issue--I, for one, would really prefer the column to come out on, say, Saturday and have the latest batch of books included in the reviews. This week's books are nearly two weeks old already. Book of the Week this week: Claws 2, with fresh and fun (without being retarded), lots of action, true to the past for us oldies yet still accessible for new readers. I give it an A-, and the minus is only because of the stupid Halle Berry ears on Black Cat's costume.

Well, Supes, I Checked Out The TOD Censorship...
by Buzz Maverik
Sep 18th, 2006
04:45:44 PM
I'm not sure that Johnson is right. Censorship would be if they didn't publish it. This is editing. I mean, we've all see nipples. You'll see more on a fat dude at the beach. I have that ESSENTIAL TOD, may have even reviewed it here. I don't really know how old Johnson is, but he doesn't have the perspective on the Marvel black and white magazines that I do. Yeah, comics weren't rated back in the day because people didn't take them that seriously. I mean, my Mom wouldn't touch a comic book except to throw it in the trash and all she ever said to me about comics was, "Put away yer damned ol' funny books or I'm throwin' 'em in the trash." But I did have friends who's parents showed interest in them (how I pitied those guys) and the most they would have done is thrown out the racy SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN or DRACULA LIVES. Most of the time, unless you had a really lazy clerk, these mags were with the regular magazines and were nowhere near the spinner rack (which made them harder to shoplift, you had to go to multiple locations and sometimes the magazine rack was right near the checkstand). Mostly, these were bought by older guys...kinda like everybody here. Some were even read by adults that you could respect like my cousin's boyfriend who was in the Hells Angels, and that dude up the street with Frazetta's Frost Giants painted on the side of his van! The kids who were into comics, like myself, didn't want black and white comics and rarely thought of these magazines, which is a shame since they were excellent! We wanted full color superheroes and monsters. So much of what people praise about the edginess of the comics to come was already there. Personally, though, I wouldn't let a little airbrushing or whatever they do deter me from this otherwise excellent volume. I'm really pleased that Marvel is reprinting these magazines. Some of the best of ESSENTIAL PUNISHER, ESSENTIAL MONSTER OF FRANKENSTEIN, ESSENTIAL MOON KNIGHT came from the black and whites.
Now, The Smoking Thing...
by Buzz Maverik
Sep 18th, 2006
04:53:41 PM
...is simply stupid from a creative standpoint. These comics are mostly bought by young to middle aged men, many of whom smoke. Odds are that some of the characters would smoke. It'd be dumb if Daredevil lit a Marlboro since he's a peak athlete, but Nick Fury is going to puff a stogie whether it's in fashion or not. And Wolverine would have no reason not to smoke since smoking can't hurt him. And we've all covered the idea that Marvel is okay with Wolvie killing people, as long as it's not with second hand smoke. Interesting characters sometimes do things their creators don't do themselves...unless we're to believe that Marvel thinks it's okay for Ultimate Pym to squirt Ultimate Wasp with bug spray.
Alan Moore Announces Sequel To LOST GIRLS.

06:12:43 PM
Ever one to call his own work controversial and predict its' future censorship, Alan Moore announced in an astral press release that he and artist/girlfriend Melinda Gebbe have begun work on SIXTEEN PINK BREAKFAST GIRLS. "Yaah, snort, uh've very much exhausted old literature so I'm now grave robbin' 80s teen movies by John Hughes. Yuh've got Samantha Baker from 16 CANDLES, Claire the Prom Queen from THE BREAKFAST CLUB and Andie Walsh from PRETTY IN PINK goin' girl on girl when they return to Shemer, IL. Which is a good thing because Farmer Ted has bet Cameron Frye that he can get three pairs of middle aged women's panties."

Taking out the naughty bits is censorship. Doesn't matter that they decide to publish it they're editing the original art and that's censorship. By your reasoning it'd be OK for the government to edit my mail just so long as I got to read the letter. Now, I'm not gonna go so far as to say that the stories are completely destroyed because fans can't see Lilith's nipples but if the original magazines were made that way and tons of teen mangas actually show bare breasts then why the hell should Marvel censor some kick ass adult oriented Dracula stories? Just put "Mature Readers" on the cover and cover your ass...not that I'm for "Mature Readers" labels either but at least the art could have been preserved as it was meant to be. Jesus what the hell is wrong with Marvel anyway? No uncensored Shanna the She-Devil because they're afraid of showing her naked as well??? Marvel claims that they're doing this stuff because of the Ultra-Conservative climate out there right now but with all this art editing and ban on smoking I'm starting to think it's Joey Q who's the ultra conservative. I'd think he'd want it to be different since he's actually an artist as well. I mean how would he have felt if someone edited an issue of ASH? Of course that'd mean someone would have had o actually read ASH...

Had some nice coloring done to him. I wish everything had that much insane detail, but it still didn't keep me from digging Davis' art. I'm really starting to like that guy a lot. His previous DC work was a couple of Batman issues I believe. The story was a little confusing though. Did Cap. Comet die and find/fight his own essence of energy or something? *** I liked the art fine in Detective, but those were valid points Humphrey. I (of course) would love to have Dini write an extra 10 pages or so to flesh each issue out a little bit more, but still. Good stuff. *** I would have contributed more to the tb, but my computer didn't even know it existed until yesterday. Good reviews @$$es. Liked the variety.

Oh, but you want paperback. You want my advice? Don't get it. It's not worth it. I'd send you my copy of Secret War if I knew where you lived. The big problem with Secret War was that it was a very Bendis story. A Bendis story told in 5 issues. It's way, way too short for what it tried to be. It should have been made entirely in secret and then released as a 12 issue maxiseries in 12 consecutive months.
