I am really excited to see Borat. The mere fact that he got a government official to visit America over this is fucking amazing. It just doesn't make any sense. The movie will obviously make the most bank over here and that is probably why. I hope Ali G shows up at the meeting and demands respec!

Turkmenistan President Saparmurat Niyazov has announced his intention to officially rename all 12 months of the year in commemoration of the country's heroes and most potent national symbols. It seems like he lives on another planet Turkmen man Mr Niyazov proposes to rename January Turkmenbashi after his official name, which means Head of all the Turkmen. Other months will be renamed to honour famous Turkmen poets and writers. He also wants the seven days of the week to be renamed, with uplifting phrases such as Young Day for Tuesday and Spirituality Day for Saturday. Mr Niyazov, who was attending Turkmenistan's annual People's Council, also said he wants to call the month of April "Mother". In response, a speaker at the council suggested calling the month by the full name of the president's deceased mother, Gurbansoltan, which the president said he would consider.

This meeting isn't about Sacha Cohen, it's about the reality that many people in the USA don't get the joke and misunderstand the relationship between the film and the real nation of Kazakhstan. Why meet with Bush and not someone from Britain? Because the Brits GET THE JOKE. They know Ali G, they know how Cohen works...no issue there.

...an issue truly worthy of the Bush administration's attention and capabilities. "My fellow Americans...Borat is truly the greatest threat to our American way of life. Why? Because of its connection to the war on terror. What connection? Just look at the guy! He's all swarthy and stuff. And Kazakhstan used to be part of the Soviet Union, which we all know was communist. Terrorists are the new communists. So there you have it. Time to invade the theaters."

It's helping create attention for Kazakhstan, and they're going to make the most of it. They understand Borat is a comic character and isn't an accurate Kazakhi portrayal, as does anyone with half a brain. Anyway, go Borat. I wish this would end up being the biggest movie of the year.

since he first appeared on uk tv, on the same show that launched ricky gervais and a handful others that haven't made it so big across the pond. kazakhstan is a shithole, i've been there, but this guys rising popularity for taking the piss out of them is disgusting. borat was never popular in the uk, his ali g character is all most people know here, because it's all people find funny. borat took off in america because they love to laugh at stupid eastern europeans. they don't see it as a joke. he had to introduce and amplify the racist element to take off in the states. that speaks fucking volumes.

That has to be the best thing ever. Bush meeting about BORAT! It may be the funniest done by by this movie. Could you even imagine Bush's confusion? Then what the hell have we been talking about for the last hour?

Borat constantly mocks the Uzbekistanis in his new movie. Where is their national outrage? He has nothing but praise for his glorious country of Kazahkistan. In all seriousness, this can only help the movie get some more free publicity. All of the geeks on here may be psyched to see this film, but Joe Average Public has no idea who Borat is.

Who thought 'madagascar' was a documentary??? Nope! Jesus what the hell is going to happen when 'Death of a Presidnet opens' over there in the good old US of A. Jesus SOME of people will shit themselves!!!! Do movies infulence people. Hollywood says no and anyone who pays over a million for a 15sec ad slot during the superbowl says yes!!!

That by taking out ads and crying out in righteous indignation, the Kazakhstan president is giving a LOT of free publicity to Borat. Like the other dude said - no such thing as bad publicity. I can't wait for this film, I think Borat is the funniest of all SBC's characters - all of which do have the same riff in that they rip on the ignorant and the bigotted. Seeing as how there's so many ignorant bigots out there, more power to 'im.

Hello. Im not one to make a stink, especially over trivial things, however please put a warning on this thread in regards to the picture. This is the kind of thing that could get one in trouble at work, if nothing else unneeded inquiry and attention. Sure I know the pic is supposed to be funny and all, but having a pic of a mostly naked dude in a rather questionable situation, funny as it is, can get people into trouble. AICN has been usually work friendly and I've been able to browse it during my off time at work without much worry. After coming onto this thread, that's changed things. Though my work is generally not as hard nosed, this could spell the end of a job for someone in a similar situation. Again, please put a warning on this out of respect to people who want to keep their jobs. Thank you.

I would've thought 'Ali G In Da House' was more objectionable, just for being a collection of purile Dick & Fart jokes, but I guess the dumbing-down of western civilisation isn't a big cause for concern with the whingers of the world. I can't wait for Borat, though, I've heard nothing but good things. Thanks for the recommendation, George Bush & the Kazakhstan!

Really. Because for every American who realizes it's a joke, there's three others who don't, or think it's a joke based on reality. Let's face it, Americans are just plain stupid when it comes to things like this. There isn't a Kazak in the US who isn't going to have to put up with ignorant shit from stupid Americans now. But at any rate, the Kazaks are making a huge mistake by making a controversy out of it. The same mistake the Anti-Defamation league made with Passion of the Christ. They're giving it free advertising.

by aicmb
Sep 14th, 2006

And for the most part, it is on us. The best parts of the film (and all of SBC's comedy for that matter) are the situations where he is able to employ one of his "fake" characters to illustrate the ignorance of a "real" person. Whether is a a bigoted southern gunstore proprietor, or a wealthy west coast elite, it's good stuff. It can make your skin crawl, but in recent years this type of comedy has become quite popular (see Gervais' work). The fact is all societies and cultures contain strata of weirdness and even shame. Look in the mirror when you rag on Americans. We can admit faults even if the public face of leadership cannot. Saying that we're ALL this boneheaded is like saying that all you UK pantywastes need to fix your goddamn teeth. In point of fact only about two-thirds of you do.
