I just hope Jackson can stay faithful to it and make The Lovely Bones into a movie in the same caliber as Heavenly Creatures. That would be great.

Rumor had it that ol' Pete was interested in adapting Ray Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles" into a feature film. He would do it justice.

I picked it up after reading that Peter was going to do it, and to be honest I didn't like it all that much. Very original and haunting in places, but to be frank I also found it quite dull. It will be interesting seeing what Peter can do with it though.

My wife (then girlfriend) was reading this book when we first hooked-up. Sorry, but I know the books that she reads and they sure aren't the ones that I enjoy (or those that I suspect Talkbackers on Aintitcool read). I wonder, will the murderer be Keanu (or even better, Kiefer - i.e. 'Eye for an Eye')? The mother will surely be Diane Lane and the little girl herself? Oh Jewish God, oh baby Jesus, oh Tom Cruise, you know it just has to be that little sicko, Dakota Fanning. Man, fuck formulamatic, bullshit, P.C. filmmaking. And fuck Peter Jackson for selling his soul to the machine.

I wonder who they're going to cast. I haven't read the book but it seems like whoever plays the lead will have a lot of weight on their shoulders. And it's about damn time he shoot a movie here in the U.S.!

Nice interview, Quint. An early draft, eh? Guess we won't be seeing this movie anytime in 2007. Interesting news about the possibility of filming in Pa. though. As for casting, I wonder how P.J. will solve the Susie/Lindsey age conundrum. **SPOILER** When she is killed, Susie is the older sister at 14 and Lindsey is 13. However Susie remains 14 while her younger sister continues to age - Lindsey's 14 at the 'Gifted Symposium' the following summer and 15 the summer after that when her Mother leaves. Then she's 21-22 in the second part of the story when her Mom returns. I'm curious to see whether P.J.'ll cast one actress for the younger version and another for the older, or find one actress around 16-17 who can play both the younger and older versions. The same holds true for Ruth.

This will feel very fresh after LOTR and Kong
by performingmonkey

I think we WILL see it in 2007, mainly because unlike his last 3 movies it won't involve a year of post-production! It's good to know they have the first draft and Peter seems quite pleased with it. You can see where he's coming from with his ideas. Just like with LOTR, he has to put what HE experiences through reading that story onscreen. Many hacks would do an adaptation that was too straight and not even worth shooting. Peter wouldn't be the visionary he is if he did that. One thing I hope is that he includes a more satisfying ending than the book has. The book does peter out somewhat, and the way the killer is dealt with in the end is pretty ridiculous. I'm sure Peter will change that. Whatever happens, this is going to be an original film. And yes, Viggo would be perfect for a role in this, either as the father or maybe the killer. One thing we can't deny is his ability to cast well.
What Peter Jackson Needs
by NeotheLessar
Sep 13th, 2006
11:12:03 AM
First of all, he needs to turn the adapting over to someone besides Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. These two should try originating their own material instead of being "creative" with other people's work. Second, he needs to hire an editor with a backbone, one who isn't afraid to cut out favorite, overdrawn, unnecessary scenes. Third, he needs someone outside of Weta to oversee the special effects. Their character, set, and visual concepts, while often interesting, go way overboard and fail to serve the story after a while. Fourth. He needs to apologize to anyone who had to sit through "Return of the King" and "King Kong". He should go to Tolkien's grave and beg his forgiveness on bent fucking knees.
The book is great, but it's oddly structured.

To make it into a film, Jackson would definitely need to change its structure. The novel is narrated by Susie in the first person, from heaven: but here's the thing, Susie isn't really the main character. The protagonist is really her younger sister, as she's the one who Susie follows around on her daily life. The sister is the one who drives the plot forward and makes things happen. Susie is a passive observer, until a bizarre scene towards the end when she takes part in the story for a brief moment. Other than that, Susie the dead girl is strictly a voice over type supporting character. And I doubt a guy like Viggo would take the father part; it's a pretty emasculating role.

That's a hell of an accusation. You better be able to back it up. As for your assertation in the first part of this interview that the the deal wasn't done, please note that in the first line of the story Quint states that HOLLYWOOD REPORTER broke the story that PJ will be doing TEMERAIRE. If any alleged unclosed deal is queered, the fault should lie with HR not AICN.

The funniest thing I ever read

Regarding the ending, which many people seem to have trouble with, on Aug. 12, 2006 someone with the handle of Generic Person posted the following on an imdb thread called, "The book is overrated": [Major Spoiler Warning] 'I was on the fence about whether or not I was enjoying the novel up until the deciding chapter, which of course was the one where Susie had overtaken Ruth's body to sleep with Ray. After that I stopped taking it seriously and disregarded any hints of pathos for Susie or anyone else. I can't hate her either, all she really wanted to do was to be laid properly, can you really blame her? **'I do have to admit however that the possession scene shows one of the most realistic aspects of the entire novel. If a pretty woman is willing to have sex, then the man will ALWAYS put out, no matter how bizzare or deranged the situation may be. **'"I probably have a million questions about what happened to your body or who killed you, but you wont be able to answer any of them because your tongue is in constant contact with my shaft and I wouldn't have it any other way." **'Congratulations Ray, you're the stereotypical walking hard on.' ***God, did I ever laugh when I read that. It will be very interesting to see how P.J. handles this scene however, because it will probably make or break the movie.
Miami, my guess is Jackson leaves that out.

Because that scene has no direct bearing on the central plot, i.e. the story of the family, particulary the story of the younger sister. That scene did kind of veer the novel in a bizarro direction, but it was still interesting as hell to read regardless.

Probably not. But look at Alison Lohman. She's 24, but can convincingly play teens (in Matchstick Men and now flicka) and has played adults her own age (in Big Fish and Where The Truth Lies) and could very easily play both the young and old versions of the girl. She's more convincing than that Veronica Mars chick.

Yes, but if P.J. casts someone who is actually fourteen for Susie, then a 24 year-old playing Lindsey would have a tough time convincing me that she's around the same age as Susie during the first part. Ditto for that Veronica Mars chick, Kristen Bell. I had envisioned someone like 16 year-old Kristen Stewart as Lindsey, as she could play both the young and old versions, but I'm afraid that even she would look too old when compared to that 'Susie' actress that P.J. seems to be refering to. [Yes, I fear that he is talking about Dakota, God help us all.]
