HOTT DAMMM!!!!! MY DICK IS HARRRDD!!!!! WOOO!!! MORE OMAR! MORE MARLO!!! MORE BUNK!!! MORE DUKIE!!! (yes, i already like that kid...he is going to be either a major pawn or a major kingpin) MORE BUBBLES!!! MORE PREZ!!! MORE SLIM CHARLES!!!! AND MOST IMPORTANT - ONE MORE FINAL SEASON TO FIND OUT WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO VALCHECK'S VAN!!!!! WHERE THE FUCK IS THAT VAN???? TELL US ALREADY!!! I AM LOSING SLEEP!!! Say what you will....but HBO redeemed itself in my mind in a major way. Deadwood died due to a spacey creator. Carnivale died due to cost and ratings. Sopranos got greedy and made HBO put everyone under the accountant's microscope. Rome didn't help. And Big Love's cast raised their price too soon. But, the folks behind The Wire showed loyalty in return for the opportunity to be on HBO. The ratings were low, but that was the only thing out of their control. The costs stayed down. The cast kept to the contracts. Everyone loved that show and put the effort before their own desires. (Consider that actors who have been killed off STILL help in the promotion of the show out of their love for it.) And most importantly, their efforts got the glowing from the press. And HBO sees that, while the public would rather see shit like Desperate Houswives, There are faithful fans of THE WIRE who try everything to get their friends to watch, even if it is on DVD a year later. Years from now, critics will still speak highly of THE WIRE and how it was the best thing that no one watched. Sopranos is HBO's cash cow. But THE WIRE is HBO's prize pig that brings them a wall of blue ribbons. And not only to I applaud HBO for rewarding David Simon's loyalty with a complete number of seasons to tell the full epic, but I feel warm and fuzzy inside knowing that HBO wants David's next idea. And that they want a long relationship with Mr. Simon. People can bitch all they want about HBO not having the hits it once did....but they cannot say HBO does not support great writing and storytelling. Those people are not watching for their own stupid reasons. ("Too complicated" "I wanna see something happy" "I just can't find black addicts entertaining") Too bad...I just smile when they bitch about Survivor not being as good as it once was. Because those of us watching THE WIRE...we have that big smile of satisfaction. We know where the good stuff is. And we are reaping the rewards of giving it that chance it deserves......And thus, get your hands off Caroline's coupons! - - - George, The 7th Chicken!!!!

Sweetest news in a long time. My faith in HBO has been restored, to say the least. Fuck Blowtime, Fuck FX. All in the Game bitch. Now I just pray that Omar doesn't get done in by Marlo this current season- which only two episodes in is already like the best season of anything ever. The Wire owns every damn show in creation- fuck it- The Wire even owns Hollywood.

This is true- we won't be waiting two years- it's been re-upped too quick. after season III aired in its entirety we waited for what seemed like a lifetime for HBO's decision- Now its been renewed after just one aired episode (though I watched the second one on demand already)...

... I love Deadwood- my second favorite show behind the Wire- but you ever notice- that even in its fourth season- more happens in a single episode of the Wire than in three episodes of Deadwood- or five episodes of the Sopranos? Each hour long episode feels like a two hour block- and not because it drags on- but because its so damn rich and balances like a dozen plot threads so concisely... and damn it feels like the production values get upped each season- The Wire is a mountain of masterpieces and the hill just gets higher- with this renewal news I think I'm gonna buy a couple of my friends season I boxsets for Christmas- if I have to drop it into peoples hands to make them watch it then so the fuck be it...

wanna be friends. All I hear from everyone is that this show is amazing and HBO's best. That said however they do ass rape you when it comes to dvd sets. I did notice that The Wire came down a bit in price but I'm still not buying it. I rememeber watching an episode or two a long time ago. Must have been at the end of the season because I was so fucking confused. From the episodes I watched I could tell there were many many plot threads they were running. Guess this will be one I'll have to skip. Now if they start replaying the first season the hour before the new season of Rome airs, I'll watch since I'm subscribing for that, the most underrated show on the network.

That link from TheReturnOfThe ReturnOfHP sends us to many TV critics reviews. Don't forget that Doug Elfman from Chicago isn't too bright: "(a) The first new episode is crazy confusing, and (b) over the course of the first batch of episodes, the story lines don't develop quickly enough". *SIGH* The Wire is simply not for the casual viewer or the uninitiated. If you've watched previous seasons, it's not confusing, and if you think it moves too slow, you should be watching CSI or Law & Order, where there's no learning curve and every episode stands alone. Confusing, slow? Naw, it's all in the game, brutha.

Get a brand new copy of Season I from Amazon for $47.88. More than worth it. By the way- I had two people watching the first ep. of season IV the other night- both of them have only seen one past episode from different seasons- and they were automatically engrossed. I think that the new season is more user friendly than the previous ones- as many storylines are practically starting anew- even the old ones.

Omar's back next week...and you know who I hope we'll also see later in the season: Brother Mouzone, who kicks ass. Anyone know if he'll be back? I love that McNulty has virtually disappeared from the show, and its pretty much unnoticeable. Its a testament to how strong everything is... even the most minor characters are interesting and complex and can easily carry an arc (new favorite is nail gun woman... what's her name?) Even if Dominic West hadn't himself reportedly cut back on his appearances so he could pursue other projects, it's also appropriate to the structure of the show that McNulty disappear: remember the extended "Chess" metaphor from Season One? From the beginning, McNulty was set up as the Chess piece directly opposed to Stringer, so now that's Stringer's gone, it's kind of appropriate that McNulty's off the board, too. On another note: this week (if you're watching ahead on HBO on Demand), it was great to see a scene where Lt. Cedric Daniels was smiling and laughing and totally relaxed at home: a different side to his character than what we're used to. On a probable sadder note: God, every season on "The Wire" something terrible happens to a sweet soul who gets ground up in the system. I'm really worried about those kids! It's already almost too painful, cause you know something bad is gonna happen to at least one of 'em.

I really was expecting HBO to kill their last great show by not going for a season five of The Wire. This news is something I've been waiting for since David Simon said he originally envisoned five seasons. Excellent job on recognizing the best show on tv HBO. I just hope that it will release next year as waiting for fall 08 would be terrible.

I haven't heard if Brother Mouzone is coming back or not but his team up with Omar last season was like the greatest super villain team up that Marvel or DC never produced. I was totally jonesing when I realized the two of them were going to get together and mess some people up. As for the accessability of this season, I totally agree. It's pretty easy to jump right in but there are just a ton of geek payoffs for those of us who've watched from the begining and I'd hate to deprive anyone of that. Watching Weebay talk about his fish, seeing Herc and Carver back at it again, watching Prez walk through that classroom door, Bubs taking on an apprentice, Lester screwing with the higher ups, Daniels laughing about it now that Lester's not under his command, McNulty in the uniform. It was all good.

This made my month. What a great show, underwatched but still watched by people like those posting their happiness on this board. To David Simon, Ed Burns, and all the cast and crew of The Wire and even those crazy ass HBO executives: thanks from one dedicated fan for staying strong and continuing to fight the good fight. It's not about race, it's not about the violence or the drugs--it's about the rage and the sharpness of the vision. Keep up the great work.

Novaman5000 The Wire costs much, much less to produce than Carnival and Deadwood which are period pieces so the costuming, sets, makeup, vehicles, horses and props are a lot more expensive to produce than the Wire, which is filmed in Baltimore with the support of the city. They don’t pay a fee for most of there sets because they get people to volunteer the space, the city provides police vehicles and things for the show. It’s really about money, they can spend more on a Sopranos or a Six feet under because they got huge syndication packages for them, but I doubt they will for Carnival, Deadwood or the Wire.

there's a good amount of cgi in Carnivale- and Novaman is a little bit off on his info- critical response to season II of Carnivale wasn't that good at all- it did have a small number of fans in the media world but it almost seemed an afterthought- and comparing it to critical response to The Wire is unfathomable- The Wire probably gets better across-the-board critical praise than any show that's ever existed. Your'e also forgetting that HBO offered Daniel Knauf the same kind of deal that was offered to David Milch- to finish up Carnivale in movie installments- Knauf refused. That said- and being a fan of both shows- I'll take The Wire over Carnivale any day. Don't get me wrong- there was plenty of reasons to love Carnivale- but there's like ten times as many reasons to love The Wire...
Why the Wire will never get good ratings
by weebay
Sep 15th, 2006

David Simon said it himself. White viewers in general won't look at a show that's majority black. They just won't. You would have thought that at least the first episode would have gotten good ratings considering the critical praise this show has gotten this season. If you tune in and don't like it that's one thing. But it wasn't even given a look by most people. Black viewers will look at all kinds of shows no matter what the racial make up of that show. I'm not saying that this is a matter of racism or anything. I just think most white viewers look a majority black show and think that it can't speak to them.

"Also Simon is working on a new HBO series about life in New Orleans after Katrina." That's great news, crackerfarmboy. Any word on if he'll get Wendell Pierce (who plays Bunk on "The Wire") as one of the stars? That would make a lot of sense-- if you've seen Spike Lee's "when the Levee Breaks" doc, you hear a lot from Pierce (who's a New Orleans native) about his family's experiences with Katrina. It sounds like he'd be perfect for the project, both onscreen and for research and character background. Plus, Pierce is simply a damn fine actor, another of about twenty "Wire" cast members who should have had Emmy noms by now.
