07:07:15 AM
OK, so The Hobbit directed by him would be VERY cool, but if he had to sacrifice doing that to do THIS then I'd be most pleased. What might be good is if he just produced The Hobbit and let someone else direct (someone good, of course), that way it could be shot next year alongside one of the lower-budget flicks he has planned, then he could throw himself into directing this Temeraire trilogy (it seems a bit of a stretch to assume he'd direct all 6 movies, if there ends up being 6). His Lucas comments are regarding the expanded universe.

Jackson transfered his physical bloat to his films
by Behemoth
Sep 12th, 2006
08:26:18 AM
King Kong was an abomination of terrible editing and awful (at times) special effects. The Flintstone-like "running in place for 10 minutes while a stampede of Brontosauruses chase us" segment was a particularly gas-inducing hodge-podge of crap-sagna. It's like Jackson is determined to take Lucas's path into self-absorbed artistic oblivion, but via a shortcut he discovered. "Fellowship" was about perfect. "Two Towers," with its awful "Warg" scene and dwarf tossing hinted at what was to come (though it was still great overall), and "King," as much as I loved parts of it, was unnecessarily long and featured a scene I will never forgive Jackson for: the cliche of cliches: hero hanging from cliff by A FINGER (absolutely impossible, even in Middle Earth), only to be pulled to safety at the last second. H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E decision that truly mars what could've been a much better ending. Then King Kong takes a dump for three hours in one of the most over-hyped, under-edited sasquatches of film ever released. I truly like Jackson. Seems like a good guy, and he's quite gifted. But PLEASE, for the love of Galadriel, FIND YOUR WAY OUT OF YOUR OWN ASS, YOU ONCE-BLOATED AUSSIE!!!!

by Olowyn
Sep 12th, 2006
08:46:47 AM
Making this over the Hobbit would be a blunder. The Hobbit is a well loved story read by people all over the world. This might be interesting, but I have never heard of these novels and I do read quite a bit of fantasy. Others have pointed out that it is just a rehash of Pern which if true is to bad. I would hope that it is not on the same level as Eragon (which was just bad, but it is amazing what having connections in the right place will do). If you want to read something good take a shot at the Fire and Ice series by George RR Martin or Brother Initiate and Gatherer of Clouds by Sean Russell.

I think PJ partly wants to capture how Eric Flint's Ring of Fire series has incorporated fan inpute. Also set in a historical fiction world, fans would summit how a existing/new tech, people, or even idea would be effected by the new element (the fictional part of the historical fiction). *** Wonder if anyone will finally pick up Gregory Keyes' Age of Unreason for adaptation....

I read these. They are great books. Excellent depth and masterful storytelling. If you haven't heard Sam Raimi acquired the rights to the Sword of Truth series which is comparable. Bad news is that he is adapting for mini-series. Back to Temaraire...I would love to see the Napoleonic era China described in the books realized on screen. Agree with other posters that this would be better then the Hobbit. The Hobbit would be a step backwards for me from the overall huge story of Lord of the Rings. Temaraire would be comparable but completely different.

I thought all the Rings films were superb (even though the Wargs seemed a little pointless). Toys! Comics! Games! Inspired by the brilliant Matrix marketing? This is the sould of Peter Jackson, not in the storytelling. Which tells us that the chances of this fantasy series being anything but a hollow piece of eye candy are close to nil. And given the ugliness of Weta's designs so far, even that has very little chance.

Sorry my friend. As much as I would like to see the Wheel of Time done as well, it has become far too convuluted, with too many characters to undertake on film. What once started out as the great modern fantasy series has become buried in its own complexity... Whenever a new one comes out I can barely remember who is who beyond the original main characters. I will have to read the Songs of Fire and Ice now that a few people have mentioned it. Temaraire is doable in a feature film format.

I also spoke recently with his assistant and yes, he has not heard anything about the Hobbit..but then again MGM never said they spoke with him either... Anyone who has read "The Return of the King" knows what a clusterfuck Peter Jackson's attempt at it really was. Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens need to remove their egos from the writing process and just allow the work they are ADAPTING to live on the screen. It's not their place to add subtext to the work, its their job to draw the subtext from the work and not force meaning upon it. They are not greater than the work they are adapting; and certainly not above it. My advice to Peter Jackson and Co. : Pull you Kiwi heads out of your asses. Thank you.

Ringb(w)earer9 is dead. He only comes out at the light of the full moon. In this case, the full moon is Peter Jackson. It's really quite comical; Ringodangdoodle only seems to post on PJ related TBs...and it's nothing but hate. I would love to see PJ chime in just to give Ringy a damn good thrashing. But I fear that would embolden him with false pride and notoriety that he doesn't deserve. (Do it anyway Pete!)

by readingwriter
Sep 12th, 2006
04:03:14 PM
That's a damned tough choice to make. Of course Shore should and no doubt will get first dibs here, and I can't wait for the rest of the complete score CDs. But JNH has a more supple, "prettier" quality to his work which makes his stuff perfect for fantasy. If there is a more beautiful piece of film music than his end title for "Flatliners" I haven't heard it. Oh, and whoever called Jackson a hack, it seems mighty strange Jackson would slave away making another trilogy just for "another hit"--the man is financially set, and if you knew what it took to make any movie, let alone a huge fantasy, you'd never have written that.

These books would be great for an HBO series with a large budget... but come on, no way you could make these for film. Not without an NC17 rating. These books are filled with hard core sex mixed with violence. And while I'd say they are the best character written fantasy books I've read(modern) I wouldn't call them the best fantasy(modern). I have to go with The Sword of Truth series for that. I liked where The Wheel of Time was going... but damn it gets boring.

Is how the ending of every book is resolved when the protagonist suddenly realises he has some kick-arse magic power that just so happens to do the job (ie macguffin). 12:51:39 AM
I think it's just that because PJ had a perfect blueprint and deviated in some strange and unnecessary ways, to let him use his own weird ideas that had no basis in Tolkien's story. The movies don't suck, but the flaws are exaggerated because there was no excuse for them, and the unflawed parts were so good that people wish the rest had followed suit. It's a missed opportunity that no director will likely have again.

by Behemoth
Sep 13th, 2006
09:11:09 AM
Look, I love the LOTR trilogy quite a bit. But I have some real problems with some elements that could've EASILY been fixed, things that really detract from the films for me. One device I DESPISE in these films - because of how overused it is - is the whole thing with the Goblin/Orc/Whatever just about ready to kill Hobbit/Hero/whatever, but before delivering death blow says something insulting, and then, like clockwork, a blade comes from behind, foe screams, falls vanquished. Once is fine. MAYBE do it twice spread out across all three films. But Jackson does it way, way too much and it gets silly. The worst culprit is the orc about ready to stab Merry in the forest. The shot looks like the orc is right on top of Merry when he says, "I'm going to put a maggot hole in you" or something, then cut to a top view when Treebeard's about to squash him, and the orc is barely at Merry's feet (otherwise, Treebeard would've crushed both of them). Completely out of synch editing there, a detail that could've easily been avoided. As for the end of "King," I don't mind that Frodo and Gollem fight and fall over the cliff, but to have Frodo doing the pathetic "hanging by one finger" thing is so pitiful and unnecessary. Have him hit a small ledge on his way down. Have him AT LEAST hanging by both hands to preserve SOME sense of realism (even fantasy films need realism in these cases). It's just a completely moronic, hackneyed approach in a movie full of beautiful, visionary moments, and I don't get it. But at least my childhood wasn't raped.

Quint, I think you have a responsibility to tell us whether you really interviewed PJ directly. I hope that you did, because every good journalist knows that you can't pretend to be having a direct conversation with the person whom the quotes come from if you haven't actually interviewed them directly. It's implied from the intro that you sat down and talked with him, or talked on the phone maybe? If that's not the case, it needs to be said in the intro paragraphs.

The game industry has attempted this already with defunct game studio Digital Pictures. They made Night Trap, Ground Zero Texas, Supreme Warrior, etc for the Sega CD & 3DO. Night Trap (starred r.i.p. Dana Plato) was the most successful title. I loved how when you beat the game your given the option to kill the main character and see the bad ending. I sadly was a huge fan of the concept for these games. Something about a interactive movie that plsys out like a choose your own adventure book sounds kick ass. If anyone is to reinvent that medium, it definitely would be Peter Jackson.

I spent 90 minutes on the phone with Peter Jackson last weekend, doing this interview you're seeing hit the site. I don't know what this Ron Wells guy thinks he knows, but I have the entire 90 minutes on microcassette tape should anyone want proof.
And as for fucking Peter over with the release, I promised to hold the Temeraire talk until it broke with the trades. Hollywood Reporter ran with the story and an hour later I posted the section of our interview focusing on Temeraire. I really hope this guy isn't the real Ron Wells because these accusations are very serious and libelously untrue.

I can confirm that Quint and Peter Jackson most definetely know each other well. This Ronwellsfilmthreat fella is pathetic - either he honestly believes what he's saying (which would be pretty funny when he realises he's wrong) or he's just a grade-A douchebag troll looking for a bit of attention. Nevermind his shit Quint - get your ass back to transcribing the rest of the interview, mahfah! ;)
Wells has oodles of Harry stories.

Trust me. These two guys are not pals. Or was it Chris Gore who I was thinking of? Can't imagine Quint needing to make up a Petey interview; seems to be always down there in Kiwi-land visiting Jax etc. What's the big deal?

This movie sounds kinda fucking stupid. Dragons during the Napolianic Wars? Why not just make a movie about the Napolionic Wars? That would sound a shitload cooler, or a movie about the 7 Years War or the War of Spanish Sucession or fucking World War I. I know Peter Jackson wants to eventually make a World War I epic - he's alluded to that in his LOTR DVD talk-over-the-movie-shit-that- I-can't-recall-the-right-word- for-right-now. So why not make one the way he wants to make one since studios are giving him carte blanche right now. Anyway this dragons-in-the-Napolionic-wars sounds about as cool as a movie about people riding unicorns during the American Civil War - maybe they could make a movie about how the Confederacy rode black unicorns that were enslaved while the Union rode white unicorns with red manes that drank a lot that they inported from Ireland.

I bought the first book here in lovely New Zealand (Taupo) and got through it suprisingly quickly. I'm big into the whole dragon scene. I'm always critical of how they're drawn on other book covers (Temeraire included) but the concept of having various breeds of dragon in a single movie really gets me excited. The coolest dragon design I've seen anywhere is the Reign of Fire one. Badass!!! Anyway, loved the book. It's inspired me to do some sketches when I get back to lovely Ireland...in a few weeks. Go Peter. Good call.

Jackson and Elvis...

Why those two? Because near the end, it took the King about an hour just to take a shit, because his colon was so abused due to his monstrous daily intake of food (20,000 calories on average near the end).

How does that relate to Jackson, you might ask?

It's easy, Jackson's cinematic colon takes 3 hours to squeeze out a story.

The only difference is that Elvis knew how to flush his unneeded Kingly evidence, and Jackson doesn't.

I refuse to trust him anymore until I can see he knows how to edit and be succinct...

Interview With Naomi Novik

For those who might want to hear what the author has to say about her books, you can hear this interview: http://tinyurl.com/joaku I'm RIck Kleffel, the gent who did the interview, and it turned out quite fascinating. Before you judge the worthiness of the material, might help to familiarizxe yourself with the material. Naomi does both halves of Jackson's equation; she writes outstanding visual scenes and she creates engaging emotional arcs. -- Rickk
I'm pretty lukewarm on this whole idea
