Although he may not always get the press and kudos, Weird Al has always been one of the most consistent and entertaining musicians in this industry. I’ve been to one of his live shows, and it was an absolute blast (“Santa Went Crazy” live was unforgettable). In an industry that has a tendency to self-obsess a bit too much, it’s nice to see someone like Al still out there, still doing what he’s been doing since the start. Plus, he (and his group) are just some damn fine musicians.

"...it reminds me of a dream I had last week, and I turned into a bird, with a CANDY BAR head! and there were all these other birds and they were trying to eat my head, but I got a away. And then there was this weird lizard,"[shakes]"wuh, uh"[pulls lizard out of pants]"WHOA!! WHOOOAA!"[throws away lizard] "Hey, I wanna, I wanna show you somethin', I wanna show you somethin',"[exits, sounds of clatter, re-enters with mops proudly]"This is my new mop. George, my friend, he gave me this mop. It's a pretty good mop. It's not as good as my old mop, I miss my old mop, but this is still a pretty good mop. Sometimes you just have to take what life gives ya, cuz Life is Like a Mop! Sometimes life gets full of dirt and crud, and bugs, 'n' hairballs and stuff, Well, you, you gotta clean it out! You gotta put it in here and rinse it off and start all over again. And sometimes life sticks to the floor so bad that a mop is not good enough, a mop isn't good enough. You gotta get down there with a, with a toothbrush ya know! You gotta scrub, you gotta get it all off, you gotta really try to get it all off. And if that doesn't work, you can't give up! You gotta stand right up, run to the window and say: 'Hey! The floors are dirty as hell, and I'm not gonna take this anymore!!' "

I don't think I've ever purchased an album outside of his work. The guy is just funny, and in an era where rockstars have to get into politics and all these different causes so they can look more popular, Al just does what he does: entertains. Don't Download This Song is probably the closest he's come to preaching (I tend to fucking hate preachy music, regardless of whether I agree with it or not), but at least it's something he's directly involved in and has tons of experience with, much like anyone else selling music through the RIAA. He's an enterrtainer, and that's what he does, and he does a damn fine job of it, too. He doesn't try to make a statement or piss people off or fight "the man" (which is always funny because rockers are closer to being "the man" than those who listen to them), he just wants to make you laugh. Those of you who say you liked him when you where 10 have my pity. It's a shame you can't just enjoy something that could be construed as childish from time to time. Al is fun no matter how old you are.

I realize his shtick is tired and old, but he makes me laugh and that's what he's ultimately aiming for. As old as his material is (and certainly should feel on replay), the occasional trips down memory lane never disappoint. A treasure of the 80's that continues to pay dividends. Eat It, Amish Paradise, and the Saga Begins have cemented him as genius IMO. If he's only a passing interest for you -- BY ALL MEANS go see one of his shows and bring the kids. I'd thought a live performance by him would be dull, but the incessant costume changes were a welcome surprise and the guy has energy to spare. Plus, he often plays in smaller venues so pretty much everyone tends to have a good seat.

Every year I have to bust this out for anyone in earshot. Polka Party was underrated, even for an Al album. Another thing is that Al's original songs done in the style of another artist can sometimes rock harder than the 'original' compositions of said genre. Case in point? "Trigger Happy" from the 'Smells Like Nirvana' album. None of the parodies really had that classic vibe but I'll be damned if that wasn't the ultimate quasi-Beach Boy anthem. My two cents anyhow. Long Live the Weird One.

doesn't mean he still doesn't have potential. I think this music video would have been much funnier had it been live action, parodying the Rock Aid/Live Aid sort of songs, with lots of singers getting together and singing it. Even "White and Nerdy" feels like a rip-off of "It's All About The Pentiums" but if it comes with a good music video, he'll definitely be embraced, which is what he needs. The world needs Weird Al. I forgot what I was going to end with... damn. Whatever. GO WEIRD AL!

I've always enjoyed the irony of an industry whose central message for the past 40 years has been "down with authority, screw the rules, do your own thing!" turning around and saying "oh, but don't illegally download our music!" I've been a fan of Weird Al's since noone outside Dr. Demento had heard of him. I'm one of a handful of people to see UHF in the theater - twice! Question for Weird Al

The man never dies. After all this time, it’s really Al’s originals that give an insight to how good a musician he is (top 3 accordionist in the world, for what it's worth.) True, many of them are “inspired” by other artists, like “Dog Eat Dog” and my personal all-time favorite “GENIUS IN FRANCE.” “One More Minute,” “Nature Trail To Hell,” “The Night Santa Went Crazy,” and of course, “Harvey the Wonder Hamster” are all great examples of tight songwriting. The problem for most uptights is that Al doesn’t write about standard repetitive love and angst. No, Al writes about what he thinks is funny, and pours his heart and soul into it even if he thinks the subject is “stupid” from a bland mainstream point of view. Anyway, this song is very good, and given real weight and punch (both comedic and dramatic) by the mighty hand of Bill Plympton. The “Top of the world, Ma” shot on top of the water tower was flat-out awesome. And even Lars Ulrich says it’s wrong!
And yet it's downloadable

Despite the song's prtestations, Weird Al has made it available to be downloaded from his own myspace page. Even better than this, if you can find the link floating around somewhere, "White and Nerdy" is floating out there somewhere.

Al doesn't "steal" anything. He gets permission for every song (exempting Amish Paradise, which was a miscommunication) and most artists are flattered by Al wanting to spoof them. Try using that handful of braincells gathering dust in the corner of your skull.

Al's Original Tunes
by Leprechaun

The original songs are such a great example of Al's abilities as a musician. Forget the weird little songs where he pitches his voice in an annoying way. Go for the very radio friendly songs that have something ridiculous as the subject matter; try to enjoy the song without focusing on the humorous lyrics. Some of the best songs I've ever heard - not best "funny songs," but just songs - are his amazing originals. If they are style-parodies or wholly original, they are very well written and perfectly produced. And except for Al's early years, all of his stuff is expertly produced. Just give a listen to "Frank's 2000 inch TV" off of ALAPALOZA, and tell me that that song is not perfect for radio play. Kudos to whomever mentioned "Trigger Happy" off of OFF THE DEEP END - which is the best Beach Boys tune they never wrote. And what about "Hardware Store" off of POODLE HAT? Anybody who likes music from different genres should enjoy that song. And "Wanna Be Your Lover" off of the same album is one of the funniest songs he ever wrote, and it is not a parody. If "My Baby's In Love With Eddie Vedder" off of RUNNING WITH SCISSORS is a parody, I don't know the original song, but it's light and catchy and a great song. Shit, I could go on forever on his originals. "Spy Hard" is one of the best Bond theme songs ever. I got the single with the instrumental version and the horns kick ass. He did all the arrangements for that track. And in some cases, I prefer the parodies' reworked production to the original. "eBay" and "Trash Day" from POODLE HAT are better than the originals - in my humble opinion. As is (sacrilege!) "Livin' In The Fridge," "Amish Paradise," "It's All About The Pentiums," and "Grapefruit Diet." All in my humble opinion - of course.

Did you all really listen to the song? Is the phrase "tounge-in-cheek" lost on you? Al is being sarcastic here, hilariously so. "How else can I afford another solid gold humvee"? "Diamond-encrusted swimming pools, those things don't grow on trees"? He's not preaching about downloading. It's a commentary on rich artists who complain that their music is being stolen. Read between the lines, folks.

It is unfortunate how little you know of women... and how unlikely it is you will ever know anything of them. I know women with all the beauty of Julia Roberts in her Pretty Woman days who totally dig on "Weird Al". But if you feel more comfortable stickin' with your superstitions, go ahead. Y'know, I hear if you keep a lucky rabbit's foot in your pocket, it improves the chance that you'll someday get laid! lol On the other hand, if you were to play "Weird Al" while trying to get her in the mood... yeah, that probably wouldn't go so well. lol
