How about Martin Short as the title character? Make him up to look like Ed Grimley and he'd be a dead ringer for Tintin.
A great idea....but I had thought of it!!

As a budding screenwriter, I write a little peeved off because some Hollywood Big wigs have beaten me to Tintin. Ten years ago I thought that a live action movie of Tintin would make a great Blockbuster flick...even without a huge budget. My image of the movie, would place it somewhere between Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones, encompassing exotic globe locations. I'm shocked by the rumour of Leo and pray that it is just that...A RUMOUR!!! I think an unknown would be best for Tintin but would prefer somebody like Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline or Geoffrey Rush as Capt Haddock with Bob Hoskins in dual roles as The Thompson Twins...what do u reckon??? Still I wish every body involved in the movie great success as I'm sure it will be superb and hope that you may call me for artistic inspiration if you ever may need to!! Mr G.R.Standish T.T.G. ...have Mr. Short play EVERY role in the film, except of course for the little wooden robot, which could be another of John Candy's several posthumous roles. And every character would have those white "Annie" eyes... ugh, gives me the willies someting fierce!

This story is not likely to happen. One thing is that Herge spoke with Steven Spielberg shortly before his death - as he wished to make a movie of one of his heroes - Herge said "No" - plain and simple. It is even written in his Will. - I even wrote a script a couple of years back, when Elijah Wood was a hot favourite, but this too was rejected because of the above details. - So, WHERE DID THIS INFO COME FROM, HUH? It ain't gonna happen!

this titanic guy is destroying everything in my way...first he's gonna star in one of my fave books - the beach. now he's rumoured to play tintin - my childhood idol. doh. well, i can, as you man in on the other side of the pond (europe that is) that a tintin film allready has been made. sometime in the 70s or 60s i reckon, don't remember. i saw some pics of it, and it looked quite awful. apparentley, it flopped too. the script was a new creation, not really from the hands of herge, but strangely approved by him. as for a tintin film, i'd vote for tintin in tibet, tintin on the moon or tintin in america for possible comicbook to film translations. for tintin i'd like to see swedish actor johan wideberg (he'd be absolutley fab in that role, plus he's definetly a stranger in the eyes of americans). for director my vote goes to jean-pierre jeunet (of french origin), that would be a visual treat!) haddock..hmm...walter matthau (if he dyes his hair black or something)... btw...short recommendations for foreign films coming to the us...life is wonderful (italian), show me love (swedish), asterix (french) and the new dogme95 film that is being planned...

I recollect seeing part of a live-action Tintin movie already, on T.V.. It was in French without subtitles and had something to do with altering a type of citrus. I've no good notion about when it was made, although I'd guess the '60s or earlier.

Take the DiCaprio 'rumor' with big hunks of salt and don't start panicking about it just yet. the 'economist' says he's being 'touted' to play tin-tin. what this means is that in order to stir up cheap publicity and garner attention, the producers and herge's family are probably loosely tossing Leo's name around (maybe 'his people' have been contacted, maybe they haven't, maybe the idea was bounced off leo himself, probably it wasn't), knowing that these days it's a lightening rod, guarenteed to catch the attention of the media. and it worked. see 'american psycho' 1998.

i must voice my objection to the making of a tintin film, especially one with that little punk dicaprio in it. several french, live action tintin movies were made a while ago, but they didnt follow the original stories (something about blue oranges comes to mind) and were just horrendous. the only way the project could be cool was if they didnt try to make it into a live action comic book (in the same way that the terrible looking asterix movie with depardieu(sic?) is) but instead used the same characters, had a very tintinesque script and had real, 1920s era type visuals in an indiana jones sort of way. but by all means dont try to replicate the tintin hair style, the primary color outfits etc, i admit dick tracy worked, but i dont think this will. and by all means dont let dicaprio defile and disgrace the tintin character with his ineptitude and aura of popular commercialism.

How exciting - I love Tintin, even got him tattoed on my bicep - collected all the comix through European friends back when they were a rarity in 70's Seattle... Geoffrey Rush would be ideal for haddock - good call previous poster. Haddock is really the pivotal character - you need someone really talented to instigate all the clever chemistry which is the source of my adoration for the works... Can't get someone who will play the caricature, which most people would in that role. This could be a great film if they really nab all those wonderful characters: The Twins, Signora, Alfred, Calculus... Tintin in Tibet is one of my favorites. And I think Leo would be ideal as Tintin - he's a great talent and the perfect type for that role, and his participation would ensure an epic grandeur befitting these exciting adventures. Doubt he'd do it tho, it's kind of popcorn fluff for such a big star. Over-hyped Titanic hooplah aside, I wonder why people bash the boy? He's proven his integrity, versatilty, dedication and depth with the intelligent choices he's made in his career, on and off-camera. He'd rule as Tintin! Are you nuts?

As a Belgian, I grew up with Tintin. They have tried to put the same atmosphere in novels, animated features and films since the 1950's, but none even came close. Tintin is a comic, and comics use methods, specific to the medium. I think Spielberg came to the same conclusion when he quit the project in the early 1980's.
Tintin & Polanski

Roman Polanski was supposed to direct a Tintin movie, over ten years ago, from a script by Melissa Mathison. From what I understand, the only thing that ever resulted from this was that Ms. Mathison's husband ended up starring in FRANTIC ... or are Polanski/Mathison still indeed involved?

Please don't cast Leo in this. Doing that would be the worst thing possible for this movie. I'm not even sure if it could be done. Cast some unknown. Please do not cast Leo. This movie would stink, if that happened.

Think about it...Lucas did the same thing with "Flash Gordon" and came up with "Star Wars". The first Indiana Jones was the year after he gave up on Tintin.

I would have to agree with the persons who say that making a Tintin movie is a mistake. TINTIN ROCKS!!!......as a comic book!
Great, let's just let Leo RUIN a great franchise. Can't wait.

If they hire Leonardo DiCappuccino, or whatever then they'll be screwing over Tintin. I don't even think they could get his hair up right. Anyways, I just think it's a dumb idea. Macauly Culkin would be better, and I don't like him much either...

This could really be a good film. I loved the Tintin comics when I was a kid. Lets pray that the Leo rumor is BS, since he would really screw this up. They should get an unknown english or european actor. The same goes for Haddock.

I love Tintin - big fan here - collected all the comics through European friends before they were available in the US, even have a Tintin tattoo. I'd love to see a good Tintin film - his sense of adventure thrilled me as a kid, and I especially took to all the fantastic characters and their relationships. I think Leo would make a great Tintin, he's boyyish and androgynous and a great, proven actor. I don't know why he gets bashed so much, he can't help his superstar status - he's certainly made many offbeat choices for film subjects. He's just good at what he does, deal with it you jealous petty geeks. I don't worship the dude, but I hate to see a good guy shot down. There's so many cheesy sell-out actors. The real casting challenge is Captain Haddock - he is the pivotal character I believe and a lesser actor would kill the work, as I think it did in the french filmed version. Geoffrey Rush would be ideal. Hope it gets made, and made well.

Hear hear Tommy. Why all this anti-Leo BS. He has proven himself as a great actor (see new issue of Movieline)& has certainly picked a lot of offbeat movies in the past. He did not make himself appera in all the newspapers etc - apart from the LA Times interview he has not spoken to the press for a year - give the guy a break
