The ultimate cheese movie

Loved the TV show as a kid. But I see nothing going for this movie today. Maybe I just can't get those cheesy special effects out of my head, or that catchy theme song: Hiiiiiiigh on the rapids, It struck their tiny raft, And plunged them down, a thousand ft. below.... To the LaaaaaAAAAAAND OF THE LOOOOOST!!!!!!
Adam Rifkin and Joe Mama's Sleestack

Ohmigod! Well, one thing about the brothers Kroft doing this instead of Disney is that the Sleestacks will probably still move at about a half a mile an hour. Still, the presence of Rifkin is very promising for the potential for dark, deadpan camp and inventive high adventure. Of greater note than Small Soldiers is his script for the entertaining MOUSE HUNT. But have you ever seen any of Rifkin's own flicks? Check out his filmography: THE DARK BACKWARDS - about a wannabe comedian Garbage-Man who grows a third arm out of his back - is the first of several strange and funny Rifkin indie-adventures. This guy's like camp Lynch! Most have probably only seen THE CHASE on HBO, which looks on the surface to be just another wretched Charlie Sheen comedy crime caper, but is actually a biting bizarro satire on media, "real TV," and cheesey chase movies, of course. Also, look for his '99 release, a docu-dramedy on the rock band KISS (recently blurbed in EW). I knew Adam for a spell when I was living in L.A. back in the big eighties. He is one funny and intelligent dude.

Alexander and Karaszewski are not writing the Pufnstuf movie. They are just producers on the project.

Having never seen the original (heck, until now I never knew there was an original...), I have to say I liked the show that was on TV a few years ago..used to watch it every week..until they changed the theme song, which made me very upset...

Can't forget that memorable show from the Krofft Bros. repertoire. Just think of the bands that could make cameos for the musical numbers. And I'm smelling a big comeback for Johnny Whitaker. Oh yes. Johnny Whitaker -- a real man's man who knows how to break the ladies' hearts. The big red hair.... his way with a melody.... his impeccable comic timing.... he's primed to come back in a BIG way!!!
Ah, fond memories...

Say what you will about THE LAND OF THE LOST, but it's one of the shows that really gripped me as a kid. Sure, the special effects were cheesy, but compared to other kid shows of the time I thought they were rather good. The Sleestak were handled very well and they always creeped me out. Even though it was aimed at kids, I thought the sci-fi element was very well done. And I'm looking forward to a feature-length movie, because done right it could really be a fun film. The remake 1990s series was a piece of crap. It didn't capture any of the fun or imagination of the original. I wonder if anyone who liked the new version ever saw the 1970s show. The time travel element, the creepy Sleestak, the other dimension thing, the dinosaurs, it was pretty cool. Keep the peace -- Kik.

First off, I always interpreted it as "Puffin'stuff" not Puff and Stuff". And forget The Zeta-Jones as Wonder Woman, How 'bout Nicole Kidman and Sarah Michelle Gellar as "Electra Woman and Dyna-Girl"? Anthony Hopkins as "Dr. Shrinker"? Back to Adam Rifkin. Saw a screening of a pseudo-documentary of his, called "Welcome to Hollywood", a la Albert Brooks' "Real Life". I personally thought it sucked (too inside), but others' opinion's may differ. Also, how 'bout that CD with modern bands doing covers of classic Saturday morning theme songs? It's pretty awesome, if you haven't heard it. Butthole Surfers doing "Underdog!", Sublime doing "Hong Kong Phooey", Tripping Daisies doing "Sigmund and the Sea Monsters". It's a must have for all true believers! So march right out and get it.

Wouldn't it be great if they used the same models and puppets from the original show? I had the unbelievable luck to find a tape of a few of the original episodes in a Wal-Mart, and it was like a brown acid flashback. The Sleestak's were the most frightening thing on television back then. Hssssssssssss... hssssssssssss... hsssssssss... those of you who know have the willies right now. Don't deny it. Hsssssssss... does anyone remember the fire-breathing dimetrodon?
Are these shows on the Family Channel?

I've since moved and don't have this channel on my cable setup, but I remember last year when The Family Channel played a lot of these shows on Saturday and Sunday Mornings -- Pufnstuf, Sigmund, etc. Sadly, no Land of the Lost. Don't know if they're still showing them, but thought I'd pass this on, though you should be warned. The above poster's description of seeing these again being like a brown acid flashback is pretty true.
I loved that show...but can anyone out there help me out?

Personally I loved the show and I didnt know it was on tape either. The `90s "version" was completely stupid on every level. It rewrote the definition of stupid. Maybe they WERE having a brown Acid flashback? Speaking of live-action Saturday morning shows, I remember vaughly one show set in outer space, where the main austronauts wore tin foil suits and were idiots like The Skipper and Gilligan. I ALMOST believe it starred Jim Nabors but I'm not sure...can anyone help me out?

I can't remember the sleestak! Was Phyllis Diller some sort of evil queen on the bugaloos? Screw the movie, I'd like to see the old stuff on video. Are the puppets from the Barbara Mandrell show ever going to get back together for a reunion tour. Man that Erlene sure was hot.

Can you imagine Marshall, Will, and Holly thwarting the T-Rex of Jurassic Park by jamming a log down his throat?!?! Or how about Chaaka being torn apart by a Velociraptor. I'm pumped for the 90's version of the Land of the Lost and what they can do with the new F/Xs.

I still have my Land of the Lost lunch box from elementary school. (I have Speed Buggy too). I can't decide which was my favorite LotL, Lost Saucer, or Far Out Space Nuts. LotL was much better before the major earthquake that brought their Uncle down at the same time the Marshall kids lost their father through a Pylon. Okay, everybody admit it, you yelled at the screen the same way I did to tell Mr. Marshall which crystals to rearrange in the Pylon. Martha Raye was the witch woman in The Bugaloos not Phyllis Diller. The Saturday morning Cartoon cd is awesome. Underdog by the Butthole Surfers is the best but the entire cd is great plus it has great info on the cartoons on the cd jacket.

The show was Far Out Space Nuts, with Gilligan and Chuck McCann and a white furry thing called "Honk" because it , well, honked. Gilligan got them put into space because they were doing the checklist and when they called "Lunch", he said "Launch" and launched the ship.

Just to show you how little I know, Adam Rifkin did three other hilarious, ultra low-budget absurdities before THE DARK BACKWARD (which has a great cast, including Wayne Newton, gadammit) - they are: NEVER ON TUESDAY, TALE OF TWO SISTERS, and THE INVISIBLE MANIAC (as Rif Coogan). I haven't seen WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD

Last I spoke to the famous Kroffts and to Jack Wild himself *he's the Brit was played HR PUFNSTUF's Jimmy*...The Kroffts had a lot of problems working with Disney. Disney...like the Kroffts wanted to own everything..and the Kroffts wanted to own all of their property, but knowing Mr. Eisner, they want to make a few bucks off them, so talks broke down and the kroffts decided not to go with Disney after all..Marty Krofft had mentioned that "Disney just didn't get it", But according to my other sources, it had much to do with the legal ranglings of their deal. Recently, The Kroffts sold many of their items at a huge auction to pay off a $500,000 debt..they probably used whatever profits for the new LOTL film. That's all I've heard of it so far...I still ask some of my sources close to the Kroffts... Carrie Friend and Kroffie!! Check out their website http://www.livingisland.com/

I loved this show as a kid, and through the Internet, got every single episode on tape. There were 44 episodes total. Forget the effects, the writing, especially in the first season was unparalleled compared to anything on kids TV today. And the effects were actually very good for the times. Most people think of the general waterfall effect, which wasn't very good, but if you watch the episodes, the effects actually do hold up very well. Until Jurassic Park, there wasn't any dinosaur effects that were better. But the bottom line is the writing. I'm glad Disney isn't involved with this. That always bugged me. My next question is where can I read fan fic on this show? I actually wrote a fan fic, but I don't know what to do with it. It's a finale for the show, where the Marshalls finally get home. Big fans of the show should like it. But anyway, if you saw the 1990s show and not the original, you don't know what you are missing. The original is as far above the 1990s version as the original Star Trek is above voyager. Ironically, the original LOTL had a lot of the original writers of Star Trek. Great stuff. I look forward to the movie.
In real life, they'd have been raptor food.
