If you get ahold of a good digital camera you can buy an hour long tape for about $30. And the quality is very good. If you are shooting with film $30 might buy you a minute or two (of course an exagerration, but hopefully point made.) Digital rocks for guys like you and me who want to give filmmaking a try and don't have to deal with the actual "film" of it all.

Wasn't this the plot to an ep of the Brady Bunch? Remember the one where someone pretends to be dying so that Joe Namath (SP?) will come visit them? And instead of BREAKING in to Skywalker Ranch, wouldn't it be easier to just write to Lucas and say: "Hey, one of our buds is dying, he would really like to see Ep1 with us, would it be possible to grant his dying wish?" Of course then you go from Indy Film territory to TV Movie territory, but it seems a bit more believable. I mean, how do you break into Skywalker Ranch, find the ENTIRE print of Ep1 and thread the projector and run it with out ANY of the alarms going off? Sorry, I don't mean to ruin the sentimentallity or the heart of the script here, but if their intent is to actually go through with it, the movie will have to work really hard to be believable. (I envision a "National Lampoon's Vacation" ending with a special guest appearance by George himself!)Just my humble opinion!

This scripts sounds stupid, kind of funny but not really. Could be something of a satire of fanboys. I didn't just impress me, and sounds like a crappy idea. Reminds me too much of that film Caldender Girl where those boys hitchhick across country to get a kiss from Marylin Monore. The script from what I've heard of it brings more to mind Caldender Girl and National Lampoon's Vacation than it does Stand By Me or American Graffiti.

Off the subject a minute here. Over at Corona's Coming Attractions, they are reporting that "ZENtertainment" reported that a release date has been announced for "The Phantom Menace" as DEC 18 1999! If this is true, I feel sorry for you chaps over in the UK. I don't know why FOX, Lucasfilm, or whoever would wait so long. If it is true, I would advise any british that can, to start saving now for a plane ticket to America this May.
Sounds a lot like Johnson's "1977"
by BothanSpy

I previously posted this little bit of news under your other article about Fanboys. Since then I've found out that Gary Kurtz himself might be involved in Johnson's project. More to come as I get it-- Here's the post: This project sounds a lot like "1977" which is being written and directed by Patrick Read Johnson (Spaced Invaders, Baby's Day Out, Angus, Dragonheart-- Though he apparently disavows Dragonheart as a total piece of shit) I know several people who are working on it, and through a series of Mission Impossible-like maneuvers, I got to read the script for this thing and it is SO AMAZING-- It's like American Grafitti on the night of May 25th, 1977. The TRUE story of Johnson and friends on the night that Star Wars was released in their hometown of Waukegan, Illinois. (Home of Ray Bradbury!) Apparently Johnson started making Super-8 movies when he was like 9. He was 15 or 16 when Star Wars came out. And just a few months before the release, his mom, trying to help him with his budding career, cold-called the editor of American Cinematographer and asked if he could introduce him to some of his sci-fi movie idols if she shipped him out to California for a few weeks. Amazingly, he agreed and Johnson got on a plane and had the kind of adventure the rest of us can only DREAM of. It just so happened that the American Cinematographer editor was going to visit the effects facilities for two films that no one knew much about at the time. The first one was something called Close Encounters of the Third Kind. And it also just so happened that on the day Johnson was taken to visit, Steven Spielberg himself was there, and Johnson met him and was given a tour of the place by the young director. (This is confirmed in one of the Steven Spielberg biography books I'm told.) Apparently, Johnson spent a great deal of time in the model shop with the likes of Greg Jein (famous modelmaker) and was even allowed to help put fiber optics into the mothership model! The next day, the American Cinematographer guy took him to a little warehouse near the Van Nuys Airport in the San Fernando Valley to see what was described by the magazine guy as "some college kids shooting models on sticks... We're not sure what the hell it is but they call it STAR WARS..." When they got there, not only did FX supervisor John Dykstra give Johnson a full on tour of the facility, he also SHOWED HIM the ROUGH CUT of STAR WARS complete with WW2 footage still cut into the aerial battles and many scenes still in their un-composited blue-screen form! HOW COOL IS THAT?? Anyway, after this staggering experience, Johnson had to return to his hometown in rural Illinois and attempt to settle back into a normal high school life. But there was no way. The film actually picks up on the morning of May 25th, 1977 with Johnson, having gotten the chance to peek behind the curtain, now limbing the walls waiting to see the first showing of STAR WARS-- He's been trying to convince just about every living thing in town to go with him, but NOBODY CARES... because NOBODY in his little town knows (YET!) what this movie is gonna be... except HIM. As the day goes on into night, we see him struggle to choose between the life he's got and the life he dreams of in Hollywood (seen through flashbacks of his amazing trip) As the film progresses, a series of personal, financial, sexual, and automotive mis-haps keeps the young director-to-be from getting to the theater... until he finally manages to arrive at 2 A.M., just as the last show is letting out! I won't give away the end, but it's a fan boy's DREAM. The script is really funny... but even better-- it's really REAL. And pretty damn moving. Johnson certainly knows what its like to be a fanboy. The highs AND lows are all here. And think about it... When JOHNSON was a fanboy... Star Wars was still just another poster in your theater lobby. He was there at the beginning... He TOUCHED the actual models-- hung out with Spielberg-- (who, by the way, was responsible, years later, for getting Spaced Invaders bought by Touchstone after he saw it and liked it.) And what's really cool is that since it's a true story, apparently they can show just about anything they want. Including the REAL PEOPLE who were part of it all. Anyway, I for one, can't wait to see this... Imagine American Grafitti with Pacers and Gremlins instead of Deuce Coups and 57 Chevys! Imagine the soundtrack! Hey! Imagine a DOUBLE-FEATURE someday of BOTH of these films!

I don't think Lucas would show an advance screening of EP1 to the Pope if he was dying! So they'd have to break in... First off, this thing is just trying to ride the Star Wars frenzy for publicity. Low budge movie about Star Wars freaks.... CLERKS, ANYONE? Could be cool, but put some cool spy stuff into it! ACTION! I'm so sick of all these low budge movies where people sit around talking because it's cheaper to film. DO SOMETHING, DAMMIT! If you're doing it digital non-linear I assume put some cool FX in. Maybe they will have to (unless Lucas lets them film inside of the Ranch). He he. LA Alpha Mattes, anyone? Oh, and I'm wondering... Does it have rather vulgar language like every other low budge film? Nothing against swearing but cheapie films seem to embrace it. Maybe it goes with the too much dialog thing. Hey, but at least they're making something. GO!!!!!!!!! (but remember you need action) PS. Anyone flaming me about wanting action can bite me because all the best movies contain it. Action being defined as 'spending scenes outside the kitchen and moving around'

I don't want to be blasphemous here, but . . . couldn't they waited till TPM comes out to see 'How' the movie actually 'is' before they make their devoted movie to tribute/honor it? Considering how much they will invest into it(Fanboy), It would only be prudent for them to rethink this idea till they all have actually seen episode 1. If the movie turns out to be good (but not spectacular) and is a little on the level between Jedi and Empire, then they could change it to 1977 for SW:ANH or better 1980, for TESB. Oh well, Just another one of my dumb thoughts. Anyway good luck.

I too think this movie sounds pretty a) scary and b) unrealistic. The reasons Lucas wouldn't screen it for a dying kid are every bit as long as the list for why I'm sure it won't show for critics before it opens. But I could be wrong - And speaking of being wrong... I was mistaken in my ZENtertainment report about a 12/18/99 release date for the prequel. It was sent along to me by a reliable source, who just said 12/18, but it appears he left out that it was the trailer that was premiering. From what I've heard today, a June/July UK release is expected.

Ahh. Once again, us fangirls of the world get left out. No respect for the femme-geeks of the world, I'm telling you. Contrary to popular belief, there are PLENTY people of the female persuasion who are just as geeked about TPM as any guy. There are also plenty of us who classify as TRUE film geeks and "fanboys". But we never hear about us chicks, do we? [Heck, I'm not even one of those feminist types who bitches about men and women being equal, but I guess I just did.]
OKATU NO VIDEO -- SAME CONCEPT

Hi folks! Ok, patron of forigen + domestic films speaking... Few years back, the Japanese made a little film called "Okatu No Video", Okatu meaning basically the same thing as fanboy. Showed a buncha live action footage of ultra loser anime fanboys in Japan with their faces blurred out (to protect the innocent, ala Cops?) spliced in between an anime movie (with designs by Kenichi Sonoda, who did Gunsmith Cats) involving something about a group of fanboys trying to convert the world to their beliefs. I've only read about it, but it seems to be the same basic concept of this movie Harry's all excited about. Seems a bit self-degrading. By the way, quick Kevin Smith mention, but the Clerks animated series is coming soon... but on what channel? Rumor says HBO or IFC, hopefully this is true...

First, in response to Peteski: You commented that "...the movie will have to work really hard to be believable." Why? The plot snippets Harry has given us do not indicate a movie that is striving for realism. It is a fantasy about what would be one of the coolest things for a geek to do. OF COURSE a movie about breaking into Skywalker Ranch won't be believable. Helo-o-o. **** To Darth Nopey-Dog: You raised the possibility of the possibility of TPM sucking and having an impact on the effectiveness of "Fanboys." Well, I am assuming that "Fanboys" is about boys who are fans (geeks) , and not TPM. Therefore, it is unnecesarry to worry about the success of TPM. Naysayer.

Sounds like a cool idea to me. Anything about StarWars is automatically a must see. I got a thrill out of seeing Vader fight the T-Rex courtesy of ILM in "The Indian in the Cupboard" I still wish Troops would come out on DVD. Couldn't they just give it away for shipping & manufacturing costs?

It looks possible that some confusion may have arisen over the UK TPM release date - December 18 1999. It is likely that this has been confused with the UK TRAILER release of Dec 18 1998. It was reported(in Force.Net) in the last few days that the UK date would be JUNE 16 1999 - this seems more likely, as it coincides with the release patterns of previous films like Jedi. But hey, who knows?

My friends and I lost one of our ranks three years ago to AIDS. Knowing that he didn't have much time left, we threw him a big bash for what would undoubtedly be his last birthday. At one point he stopped every conversation in the room by saying, "Do you know what REALLY pisses me off?" We were all, I think, expecting a comment of great magnitude. "What pisses me off," he continued, "Is that I'm not going to live to see the next Star Wars movie. I want to tell George Lucas to get off his ass and make the damn thing. I'm running out of time, here!" My friend died two months later. The film will come out a good 4 years after my his death--Lucas missed by a wide margin--but if there had been a print to see at the time, I don't think one of us would have refused to badger Lucas into the ground on his behalf. I like the idea for the movie--as long as it's more about the friends than the flick. The ending could be in danger of being anticlimactic if it's not done just right. On any count, more power to the film makers. I hope they pull it off.

I think a more accurate film would be if all the fanboys instead sat around and told their dying friend all their arguments why Episode I is going to suck and isn't worth seeing anyway so really, the dying friend is actually quite *lucky* as he won't have to deal with this new *bad* Star Wars film on his mind for years to come. Then, at the end of the movie you can show the remaining fanboys coming out of the theatre after seeing Episode I, utterly stunned and awed, remarking how their dead friend would have loved it. Then they line up for the next showing because their dead friend "would have wanted it that way."

Yes, we fangirls do exist and we are as obsessed about SW as the guys. DoubleDown, thank you for pointing that out. We just don't draw the attention the fanboys do unless we are those militant feminists who bitch about anything to anyone who will listen. Otherwise, we are so outnumbered among Sci-Fi fans, it can sometimes be easy to overlook us. And BTW Harry- Glen won't die before TPM premieres. I have his Electronic Boba Fett to hold hostage. UK release date (and Lucas is a fraud)
by Matt Broben

Part 1 comes out on JULY 16th (according to imdb last week). This makes more sense than June 16th since it is a Friday. As for the second part of my message I've heard Lucas in interviews say he created the whole 'saga' (especially the relationships) before he did part 4. But in the script it clearly states Luke is 18 and Leia is 16 hence he didn't have any intention of them being twins. Could it be he created the whole Star Wars story after part 4 was released (incidentally just as Star Wars without that episode shit) and made a shit load of money. Perhaps we can expect a new trilogy everytime Lucas is down to his last billion!

Harry and readers, I thought I was the only one who podered what I would do if I were told I had incurable fatal illnes. At first I thought I would contact a make-a-wish organization and have them contact Lucas. Since I am 33 years old, they would not bother. I thought of just appealing to GL, but he might think I am faking the illness just to see TPM early and pass the info onto the rest of you via the net. I fugured that he must have received requests already and probably said, "no." If I break in, I am going to die anyway, but who wants to leave a criminal record for their wife and family. I would definitely see this movie, because it expresses my own fears. It touches on a chord of comraderie that I sensed when I saw the TPM trailer at the Tuesday premiere and met fellow fans cheering or the fans (including Brian Lindner from theForce.net at the GWU auditorium to meet the flanneled one himself one year ago. We were like one family with a common interest.
A fangirl's wish... and a little idea
by Ithilwen

The plot is not unlikely. The day before I saw the Trailer (on the Internet - I'm European) a doctor told me I had another cancer (I had had one two years ago). I posted a message in which I told my Big Wish: guess what... (hint: it is related with flying to the U.S. in May 1999). A boy wrote me an e-mail to cheer me up (he did). Yesterday I've been told I'm in perfect health, but I'm still planning (to go to the U.K.: a little of realism into my wonderful geek world...). Anyway: reading the plot of Fanboys reminded me of myself waiting for the SW:SE videocassette while having a chemio (you know, the cancer medicine: it heals you, but it makes you feel terrible). I spent hours in bed talking with my friend about the Big Party we were going to do the day we would have that cassette... The more we talked, the better I felt. Meanwhile, the illness went away. I got that darn cassette two days after the last chemio. I have never done that "SW party". But I'm sure that chatting, and joking, and planning helped me more than a lot of medicines (no Prozac, just Star Wars). The point is: in waiting, everything is perfect, because it is exactly the way you want it to be. Just think about what you dream about yourself when you'll grow up.... And, whatever is going to happen, dreaming is a good thing. Glen: I'm almost sure you'll see Ep.s 1 to 9 - and "almost" is there because of the Ep.s 6 to 9. Best wishes.
