The best reason for having HBO for most of the last half decade premiered its fourth season last night. I loved Deadwood and will miss it like hell, but The Wire is the best show to ever air on HBO. Maybe anywhere.

... if you want to appreciate it, watch it from the fucking beginning. It's the 21st century, folks. Get a DVD player already. Then rent the first three seasons of this incredible, brilliant, funny, heartbreaking, edifying, shattering show. Then throw your DVD player away. It's best that it die happy, rather than be soiled by the disc of an inferior show. All you people who complain about 'Carnivale'... As yoda would say: break me a fucking give. The show was O-KAY. Nothing more. One season of filler, one season of sloppy writing. Some good creepy moments and performances sprinkled throughout. 'The Wire' makes 'Carnivale' look like a halfwit platypus-child in comparison. And people who think '24' is the best show on television... deserve to be stranded in west Baltimore wearing nothing but a Dave Matthews tour shirt and Superman underoos with 'Omar is a butt-packer' painted on the crotch. Uh-huh.

Keep it wavin' http://tinyurl.com/gr8wk Path to 911 was as good as United 93 or WTC. I've seen all 3 movies and they overlap in scenes which is interesting to see how each approached the same material. I've never seen The WIRE ... yet!

As someone who lives in Baltimore I just have to say that most of the show if filmed in East Baltimore. Ed Burns even said so in a recent interview. The Hamsterdam were filmed in east B-More. Also the majority of the cities drug murders talk place in east Baltimore. Also something close to 80% or more of the murder victims in the city last year had criminal records.

The guy who plays the deacon in the church who helped Cutty with advice when he got out of jail and who also is friends with Bunny Colvin, is played by Melvin Williams AKA "Little" Melvin. He was the city's biggest drug dealer in the 60's 70's and early 80's until he went to jail. The Avon Barksdale character is based on Little Melvin as well as a couple of other dealers. A Little Melvin character was also in the movie "Liberty Heights"

second episode of season IV was excellent- as usual. The Wire > Deadwood. Deadwood > everything except The Wire.

This is a fan-fucking-tastic show. I watched the season 4 opener for my first episode of The Wire and I was hooked, even though I have little to no clue who most people are.
The Wire deserves all praise.

Yep, I've enjoyed the HBO original programming, but The Wire shames everything else HBO has produced: The acting, the drama, the tension, the writing has been consistantly excellent...what's more, its is possible for a viewer to see how much the creators *care* about maintaining this level of excellence. I am in total agreement with those that would like HBO-philes who think either Carnivale or Deadwood was the best thing Home Box ever produced...try The Wire...any random episode...and you will be amazed. I'm also catching the new season On Demand, and I greatly prefer the option of catching the 'new' episode at my leisure.
I suspect Omar will

Great shows take place in Baltimore! I wouldn't be surprised if in the Series finale of "LOST" it turns out that the island is really somewhere in the Baltimore Harbor or something. Long live Baltimore!

Wire talkbackers/BorisF

O.k., some talkbackers type that there's no reason to keep HBO after the cancellation of hits like'Six Ft.Under'and 'Deadwood', yet their on a talkback with three or four dozen people who are television junkies and are aware of 'quality' programing who are speaking about a show that follows in the vein of the very shows they miss, and just might be a little better? I'll never understand why The Wire gets shitty ratings, while CBS 'feel good' shows that offer repetitive slapstick comedy or pop culture get the top ratings week after week. Because the cast of The Wire is 70% Black, does that diminish the quality of their stories? Can America not view Blacks outside of the drug dealer or villian # 1 on this weeks 'LAw & Order? (Naw, officer, I didn't do it, homie! It was Tavon pig!")No other show gives Black characters thoughts, motives, feelings, regrets, charisma, and other traits outside of Black cop, Black Gangster, Black 'Buppie', 'Omirossa' type-Black chick, or hip-cool Black guy sidekick(see 'Not Another Teen Movie' for ex.)Sorry 'Shield'. Love it for the breakdown of street police work, but not all Black villians wanna "187 on that ass wit'a 40oz, boyeeee!" The Wire is an eye-opener to all those who don't get a chance to grow up in the ghettos of Chicago, Philly, L.A, N.Y., ATL, Detroit, etc... I assure you, my life growing up there echos themes of the Wire more than a 'Friends' or a 'West Wing'. America has many different stories to tell, and The Wire nails other arenas (City Hall Corruption, Public Schools, Drug Policies, Jails, Media,etc..). Why do real topics scare people so? Especially if the entertainment value on The Wire is excellent as well?
Why the wire will never get good ratings

David Simon said it himself. White viewers won't look at a show that's majority black. They just won't. You would have thought that at least the first episode would have gotten good ratings considering the critical praise this show has gotten this season. If you tune in and don't like it that's one thing. But it wasn't even given a look by most people. Black viewers will look at all kinds of shows no matter what the racial make up of that show is.
