Will Smith will do to the original story of "I am Legend" in this movie exzctly what he did to "Irobot". Take a bigf shit in it's mouth and have more product placement per frame than any other movie in history. (except for Josie & The Pussycats".)

I must admit when I first heard about Smith being in this movie, I wasn't too sure about it. However, I went back, rewatched Ali and even (yes...) Badboys (part 1 not 2) and I have to admit, I do think he'll be able to pull it off and make it good. I'm hoping the script is solid, the rest of the cast is decent and the storyline doesn't ponder about too much. Whilst I like Omega Man (Never saw the very original one...) I did think it kind of slow at times... the possibilities of what a man/or woman, could do in the world if they were the last one left? No repercussions? It boggles the mind...

Will Smith? Are you kidding me with this???? Let me guess, he sees blood-sucking mutants driving the GT and exclaims, "Awwww HELL no! I have GOT to get me one of those!" And thus, Matheson gets anal-raped again.

Last guy on Earth. He can drive any car he wants... so he chooses a new Mustang? Not a cop car with great suspension, breaks and torque. Not a Lamboghini with it's insane speed and handling. No, you choose a Mustang. That's like saying "You can sleep with any woman in the world" and you choose Molly Ringwald over Scarlett Johansenn or Evangeline Lilly. Re-Tar-Ded. And that's the problem with copious amounts of product placement. They bring me out of the movie because they change the dynamics of the film's reality just to have a free advert for their product. Some product placements are subtle, and that's okay. A guy drinks a coke or there's a Budweiser sign in a bar. That's reality. Those things happen every day. But when an actor stops a scene to look into the camera and say "I gots to have my VINTAGE LEATHER CHUCK TAYLORS. 1995". Then you sound like a tool and the thin veil of the movie's reality is shredded for me.

I love the orignal story. Will Smith is wrong for the part, and I doubt he took this movie to expand his range or to play off-type. Neville is supposed to be tough, but kind of quiet-tough, beaten down by the situation he finds himself in. I don't think he's supposed to be particularly young either. I don't think Will Smith could ever look world-weary enough. They'd better keep the ending the same, but I doubt they will. Though something tells me the creatures will all be wearing product-placement T-shirts and sneakers. Ironically, they'll keep the original title, but something tells me this will be the least faithful adaptation yet.

The Wicker Man REMAKE! This movie will suck like Wicker did. Why remake Wicker Man if you are going to not "better" it. Same with this. The story is classic. Unless they are remaking "Omega Man" which was bad in a good way (that me being a teen when I watched it). But they should call it Omega Man. Am I the only "old timer" who used to act out movies and comics as a kid? This was one of my favorites. We'd always fight over who got to be Chuck Heston. Do kids still do that or do they just play video games? Back to "I Am Legend"... one thing is for certain from these pics, there will plenty of kick backs from product placement. That may be why Hollywood doesn't care if anyone sees it. They get paid off by corporations. Same reason "Idiocracy" is being dumped. It's making fun of corporations. Now make fun of me.....

Most of us bash because this movie's been planned for years with various scripts leaked. The original 1954 story had so much potential and I think what angers most is up to now you got 1 shot to make a movie. Having said that now, with our short attention span and hollywood greed, perhaps this can get remade. It was originally set in the 'burbs, not big city, with loads of social commentary like what is normal? I'm sure Smith will capture the fact that by fighting monsters Neville is himself becoming one but I like layers in my movies. I have some of the scripts still. Mark Protosevich and John Logan. I think they are from at least 1997. I also have the OmegaMan script by John William Corrington from 1970. Could figure some way to repost them if they are not still available. My fingers are crossed with this one. Who put finishing touches on this script?

This movie could really go either way. I bought the book years ago and I've seen the original two movies (actually I own the Vincent Price one, it's said to be the inspiration for Romero's "Dead" zombies), and neither one is all that great. Hopefully this will be rated R and actually follow more closely to the book than the elder pics. Then again this could just be I Robot - part deux.

Keenen Ivory Wayans and produced by Brian Glazer. Legend is being directed by some music video guy and credited as being written by it's producer Akiva Goldsman. Goldsman is also producing "Tonight, He Comes" with Will Smith. Goldsman also wrote the classic dialog for "I, Robot, Lost in Space, Batman & Robin, Da Vinci Code as well as Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man. Migh have been nominated for Oscars for last two. This is one of the best stories ever written for the genre. A defining classic. I really hope they do not kill it the way they did with I,Robot (which in itself was a watch-able movie, but has very little to do with the original). This movie has to be truly reflective of the book itself. Neville's neighbour is a key part of this story. The paranoid, scared-and-fearless, creative and constantly adaptive nature is critical. Heck, the introspective nature of Neville is key and leads to one of the greatest endings in this genre. Please don't Will-Smith-ize the ending and crush this legendary story.

Smith is a good actor... but considering he consistently chooses to work with "filmmakers" like Francis "Who?" I never read the original novel, but saw Omegaman on cinemax (few years back)which was an instant scifi dystopian classic. I'd rather see a remake of this and recast the flick I.E. getting rid of will shit. he was great in six degrees of seperation, but post independance day his dialogue has gotten worse and worse as if he's a parady of himself. gimmie an unknown actor to portray OM and include that song from The Police (sting and summers must have been fans of the movie to come up with those post apocalypsesque lyrics .great song!!) There was even talk of the third blade movie having a plot simular to the I am legend's premise, but goyer fucked up and gave us some lame ass nightstalkers vs "disco drac" plot. (C'mon, what fucking prince of darkness would wear an open shirt with gold chains around the neckline.ahem!) anyway i'm sure to avoid this movie when it comes out.

If the movie's done right, that is. So much of the movie (hopefully) relies on an actor who has keep it going and keep our attentions all by himself. That's legendary charisma + the ability to talk to himself without seeming alien. Jim Carrey's too goofy. Tom Hanks already did CAST AWAY. Will Smith is far and away ahead of the rest of the short list of potentials.

Sure, there are a few actors I'd have picked before Smith, but this isn't a deal breaker for me. Was the car that Heston drove in Omega Man the BEST, most LOGICAL choice for an automobile? Nah. Was the truck that Neville drove in the book that, either? Nope. Sure, that leaked script that made the rounds on the internets a few years back really sucked, but if you believe that script is the same, untouched, that they're using now, you have an incredibly naive and stunted understanding of how scriptwriting in the current studio system works. Let's see the vampires. Let's leak the actual shooting script. Let's see a trailer. Then I'll judge. You motherfuckers are stretching, looking for any little thing to nitpick.

I Am Legend is one of the greatest horror novels EVER! Now it's going to be a vehicle for Will Smith to spit crummy one-liners by a brain dead screenwriter. It makes me sick. The only good thing that can come out of this is that I Am Legend will be discovered by new readers and they in turn will read more works by master Richard Matheson. If you haven't read I Am Legend or anything by Matheson, run out and get some today.
Will Smith Was Good in Ali
by SeedyAl
Sep 5th, 2006
12:37:05 AM
Although he did an impersonation of Ali, rather than in interpretation. It could have had more emotional depth. But will Smith in serious science fiction movies is AWFUL. He sucked in Independence Day and he sucked in I Robot. He was good in Men in Black because he was supposed to be funny. But when asked to play a role with more depth, like in I Robot, he can't do it. I hope he proves me wrong on Legend, but I have low expectations. I hope he realizes that he can't get away with an unrealistic performance like Charlton Heston did. This is a different time, and actors need to deliver more realism. And you need realism in science fiction for the story to be more believable. I don't think Smith has what it takes. His acting is just too immature and shallow.

I agree. Read the book guys and you won't be disapointed. It is one of the few books I have sat down and read in one sitting. The book is a great horror story but also about American society and the way what is normal can become abonormal. The hero thinks he is the the one 'normal' man on earth until he eventually realises that perhaps he has become the monster he thought he was fighting. I don't want to spoil the ending in case you do read it (or, God forbid!) they keep it in the film, but when he looks at all the mutants and declare 'Now I am legend' it sent a shiver down my spine. Hollywood is scared of down beat endings but they can make a film a classic. Just look at Wicker Man. That is a great fiilm because of the shocking and horrifying ending.

And weren't they called something along the lines of 'Blade, etc?' Ha...really, though...I read a version of the script that was around a while back and it was pretty cool - very actiony and geared up for Arnold. But it wasn't Matheson's classic novella about being absolutely, utterly alone either - not by a long shot. Pity, but there could be a few tricks up the old sleeve - Constantine wasn't nearly Hellblazer, but it wasn't pure shite either...we'll just have to see the film I guess.

What was wrong with the suburban setting. Made things seem more claustrophobic and eerie. It worked. So instead not only do we have Will Smith (remember he's black), we have the mustang and we have New York fucking city. Gotta appeal to the kids! You know it really surprises me how few truly good directors there are in the world. Literally you could count them on both hands.

As has been mentioned, the script has been knocking around for years, (and pimped for some reason on this site as one of the best unproduced scripts ever) the problem is it's awful, the ending of the book in which the whole point, poignancy, and social commentary is encapsulated was of course ditched for a big explosive ho-ra Hollywood ending. I like to give movies-in-progress the benefit of the doubt, but I don't recall a trip to New York in a shiny new car avoiding the military? I *do* remember a trip to the library in a busted-ass station wagon he kept running as best he could. Unless those vehicles are abandoned suggesting the army failed in stopping the undead...could work then. Not sure how many corpses he's going to fit in that car though.

with Will Smith. Goldsman and Smith need to create some other property to fuck up. I Am Legend will never get a faithful adaptation as long as Hollywood keeps trying to make it a hip and flashy post-apocalyptic movie. It's also kind of funny that a guy who sucks as a writer keeps using a guy who can't act. I mean Goldsman helped kill the Batman franchise and look how long it took to recover. He shouldn't even be working.

Much like "Lord of the Rings," it would be impossible to film the book exactly as it is written (at least, not without relying on a voice-over throughout the movie). The unfortunate thing is that instead of trying to adapt the story while retaining Matheson's themes, the studio seems to be pushing "I Am Legend" to be more of an action movie (which, despite scenes of blood and violence, the book most certainly is NOT). If the rumors here are true, and the Ben Cortman really is written out, then the movie just lost its most interesting character.
Book Ending (MASSIVE SPOILERS!)
by readingwriter
Sep 5th, 2006
08:39:43 PM
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they are changing the book's ending. (I know the previous script did.) The book is very low on dialogue, it doesn't take place in NYC, and is mostly a one-person character piece. The ending is what makes it so good because it does something mainstream movies never, ever do--it makes everything the hero's been doing look bad. The hero, in the end, fails. (I'm trying to be vague for those who resisted the spoiler alert.) Someone suggested Mann and Eastwood as having the right touch for this--if only Peckinpah in Straw Dogs mode could have taken a crack. In the end, the hero makes a choice and the book ends on a massive bummer I can't see them choosing for the movie, especially not a Will Smith movie. The hero must be RIGHT and must WIN in these massive budget things, and Smith isn't going to jeopardize his box office standing with a dark, slow character piece. I don't know who I'd pick for the role--Aaron Eckhart (sp?)?

And I have serious doubts about this project. Will Smith is just WRONG for it. We're going to have the Vampire Rap at the closing credits, we're going to get "Oh no you didn't just try'n bite my ass!" and we're going to get something that is basically "I, Robot" but with vampires instead of robots. They should have stuck to the book, cast Michael Wincott as Neville, and fergoshsakes stop trying to appeal to the teenagers!!! I love this book- Why can't anybody treat it with the same kind of respect Peter Jackson gave to Lord of the Rings? Hell, I'd settle for the respect given to Harry Potter or Roger Rabbit, instead of another Will Smith action bonanza.
I'm betting "AW HELL NO!" pops out first

This story is revered as one of the great classics of the genre. You can take the greedy way, slap some 1/2 wit talents to it and make a few bucks opening weekend and then it will die and take with it any chance of this being made again for 30 years...or, you can scrap it, take your lumps, eat your pride and put together the director and cast to make this one for the history books. Make this film as it was written. No Will Smith, no video director. Do not make this as scripted with the cast and director in place. This is a geek movie, and to be treated with respect. Disrespect it at your peril. It will not succeed and get a bad rap before it even opens. Be wise, this could be your ticket to hollywood glory or just another in a list of rushed movies that is damned before it even opens.

I don't know if you are trying to suggest racism is behind this Will Smith bashing but you are missing the point. The original character in the book was an everyday white collar Joe who happened to find himself the last unmutated man on Earth. He was portrayed as an ordinary man who only became immune through a bizzare incident from his Army days. He kills mutants but he doesn't do it with a BFG gun and a cheeky quip and then escape in a souped up supercar but in an almost methodical way. The book is set in the suberbs and show how two neighbours who, before the virus came, were just typical guys who passed plesantries on their way to work but suddenly became deadly enemies. For the story to work as in the book, whoever plays him need to retain this. I have nothing against Will Smith but he doesn't play this sort of character. The worry is that a perfectly good story will get changed to suit his acting style and this will ruin the whole film.

Good call, lady, you summed up what's wrong with this movie perfectly. I also agree with you, thevision, Damian Lewis would be grand as Cortman. And why do we need loads of dialogue? It's pretty obvious what's going on without needing a voice over - one normal guy against a bunch of vampire-zombie-mutant type things, trying to stay alive - plus there are those flashbacks that will fill in the back story for those who need it (and I bet those flashbacks will now be much longer and feature a bit of lovin' between Smith and his gorgeous wife before she goes...well). I remember hearing about some war film that was on the cards, where there would be no dialogue and SURPRISE, it didn't get made. Come on, Hollywood, have some balls, we're not all idiots you know.

Unfortunately the point that Mr. Smith *could* play a no-nonsense average joe struggling for survival doesn't mean that the script for this has that kind of character written in for him. Based on these pics, the other action movies Goldsman has written, and Smith's usual acting MO, I am very doubtful right now that they went that direction and think fans of the book are largely justified in their criticism.

Panterarocks, I fully understand your situation, as the Hasselhoff videos totally knocked me off my ass as well. However, once you sober up a little, you will find that basically the problem I see does not lie with Smith's abilities, but with how this movie appears to have been written.

If he can give a pretty good performance in a movie, Running Scared, then truly anything is possible. At this moment I am looking outside my window for flying pigs. Actually Pantera, the only thing Running Scared is proof of is a director who knows how to use Walker in a film. Usually Walker does just as good an impression of a tree as both Keanu Reeves and Orlando Bloom, but the RS director pulled a good performance out of the guy. Go figure. Stranger things have happened.

Fair enough. I haven't seen Ali so I can't comment on his performance. As Cholera's Ghost has already pointed out though, the presence of the souped up car, the locations and the fact the script was written by Goldsman does not bode well. I really hope i'm wrong though and it stays true to the book and Will Smith gives the kind of understated, downbeat performance this film needs. Hollywood needs to realise that books like this are classics exactly because they already have great plots and characters and therefore they shouldn't need to be changed. PS. The BFG was originally in the first Doom game but has since become a by word for any ridiculously large and powerful weapon. I was using it in this context.

I'm usually the optimus (pun and incorrect spelling intended), but I have to say that Will Smith is just wrong for this part. Hugh Jackman would have been great, BUT the best casting would have been Arnold with Ridley Scott directing. Arnold should have made another Heston movie remake with Planet of the Apes with James Cameron directing. I like Will Smith, but he's just become so one note. I'm not looking forward to his wise cracks. As far as the online script goes, toss it. It's been totally rewritten. This was one movie I've been waiting a LOOONG time to see, but now it's kind of dead in my eyes. Hopefully they prove me wrong.
