John William should go back to his style in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS... after ET he took a turn somewhere in Softy-land... Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters and Raiders are his best work. In fact you can see how he mellowed out as the Indiana Jones films evolved. Sadly. Raiders = serious fun. Temple of Doom = Nice, just a bit lighter thank usual. LAST CRUSADE = Just plain silly as the movie too many jokes, it didnt take itself seriously.

...is a national treasure. Seriously. He is half the reason that Spielberg and Lucas's films worked. He wasn't a very good comonent -- he was an absolutely crucial component, without which Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. et al become mediocre films. It's that huge of a difference. But this theme is ballsweat. I was hoping for something a little more iconic. Sure, it's muscular, off-kilter and epic in a way, but can you hum it right now? With a football theme, that's a necessesity. I wish John Williams would spend more time scoring deserving films while he can rather than doing all of this other crap.

The smell of the grass, the crush of the gridiron, the screaming masses pleading you're ass to score... NFL Films presents Shotgun Hut Hut: The Story of the Quarterback. Quarterbacks date back to Roman times when centurions would line in front Caeser as he tossed a severed head to his enemies line or "gaulpost"....

Williams is incredibly talented, has written some of the greatest scores, and yet, he is just as capable of writing something lame as anyone--his lame themes just have large orchestras playing them. His sound is so omni-present that for me at least his style isn't enough anymore. In all of the scores he's done lately he's come through at least in some parts, but when he's slumming, when it sounds like his heart isn't in it, he writes something that could be labelled "Generic John Williams Theme"--and here it is!

Love Williams' Music
by Playhouse
Sep 2nd, 2006
10:45:36 AM
But his stuff is becoming too predictable. This sounds like too many of the musical cues from the prequel trilogy. For every Duel of the Fates, Across the Stars and Battle of the Heroes, we got 10 to 20 cues that were just ho-hum and not very memorable. And they all had the rat-a-tat-tat syncopated marching feeling that this theme has. I understand it meshes with the marching down the field part of football. But this should have been as rousing as Williams' Olympics Fanfare. Or at least measured up to Fox's theme or even CBS's. I'm not knocking on Williams. The man is still a god. But there is a sameness to his music in the last ten years.

OK, so you haven't really listened to John Williams in the last ten years. That's OK. Just don't go around basing opinions pretending you have. Williams has, in the twilight of his years, managed to enshrine himself as one of the most diverse composers of all time, ESPECIALLY IN THE LAST 10 YEARS! "A.I.", "Munich", "Geisha", "Catch Me if you Can", "Minority Report", "The Terminal", "War of the Worlds", "Saving Private Ryan", "Rosewood", "Sleepers". WHAT THE HELL, NONE OF THESE SOUND THE SAME!!! They are as diverse as you're going to get from one artist. What the hell do you want? If anybody thinks that JW's music of the last 10 years sounds the same then the only explanation is they haven't been listening to it. You don't MORE diverse as a composer. It's ironic because the period in JW's career where he probably was producing scores that were all similar in nature and genre was the late 70's and 80's. And that's where people would put him at h is peak. Listen to his work before 1975 and after 1990 and that's where you'll find his most diverse output.
I thought it'd be worse

He is and always will be the greatest composer cinema has ever had. 90% of the time he is bang on the money, and I like this clip. It's classic Williams. He has his sound, and I've always loved it!
John Williams is not the best movie composer

He had several classic scores in a short period of time, but he's been as run-of-the-mill as the second and third tier composers for a long time, now. Jerry Goldsmith was an innovator and had spots of brilliance throughout his career, rather than a short patch of brilliance early on.

attitudes are just ridiculous. Calling a turd a turd doesn't make one a "deadbeat". Here's a test for you all. Pretend this had been posted saying it was written by some B list hack. You KNOW the guys raving the most about Johnny would be ripping it to shreds. "Sounds like a bad John Williams knockoff." "What derivitave crap...why didn't they just get John Williams to do it..." Admit it, you know it's true.

That was GREAT! It sounded like Star Wars 7, the theme song for some new bad guy we haven't met yet. I'm glad that after all these years, he's still not above good old-fashioned bombast.

It could of been a lot worse. I think hearing this in the proper context (with the images of football plays etc..) will add to it. Sure its not as great as the Classic CBS music from back in the day (when CBS did the NFC games) but this one will work.

Bum Bum Bum Bada Bum....It's in my head now even though I only heard it twice just now. With that said, can you imagine what Basil Poledouris (Conan The Barbarian) would have done with it?

I went to NBC's website for Sunday Night Football: www.snfonnbc.com and they've reworked the old NBC Sports theme there that is light years better than John William's new theme, good as it is. It sounds more majestic and heroic than JW's more martial one. It almost sounds like Football Players of the Carribean!

How'd that get posted so many times when I got a site error on each attempt? Freakin weird. Of course, after the last attempt, I checked and saw the site was down. But if it was down, not even one of them should've gotten through. Damn. It would've been a funny idea if it'd have posted ONLY ONE TIME! lol =P

Goblet of Fire

I think Williams passed on Goblet of Fire, cause he was busy working on Spielberg's latest (War of the Worlds?). But I don't think they offered for Order of the Phoenix. There seems to be a new system in the HP series of the director bringing in someone they usually work with. Which sucks for consistency in the music. I thought that aside from the introduction of Dumstrang, the GoF score sucked. I don't understand why a director or a studio would pass in Williams if he's available when he's already scored most of the movies in the series. Oh, and by the way...THE G-MEN WILL OWN ALL YO ASSES!!!!!!
