Idiocracy works from a flawed premise
by chrth
Sep 1st, 2006
09:50:16 AM
That people around today, or a hundred years ago, or a thousand years ago, were all that smart to begin with. I mean look at the Internet. All this information, all this ability to converse on a global level, and what do we get? Porno, porno, porno! Simpsons quotes! (like that one) And idiots on the left and right who thinks anyone gives a crap about their political views outside their circle-jerking online brethren, and of course people who spend hours each day telling us how cute their cat fluffy was. And don't even get me started on people who rant on AICN Talkbacks. Anyway, the point is, there will always be an intellectual minority amongst a vast sea of mediocrity and unless society specifically looks to repress the intelligent ones, the premise of Idiocracy (which does not appear to do so) is flawed. End Transmission.

I was beginning to think that this movie was going to disappear into the ether and that nobody at AICN (or anywhere else for that matter was going to mention it). I implore you to see this movie if you live in an area where it has been released. See it, even if you think it will suck. One, because Mike Judge deserves a chance after "Office Space," and two, because the studio is trying to bury this movie alive because it has decided for you what you like. Even if this movie is far from innovative, Fox has proven that it doesn't have the stomach for innovation.

He was being saracstic about seeing that awful movie called "Crank." God that looks lousy. In the trailer, one character utters the following lines: "They gave ya the Beijing Cocktail. It looks like it was hacked up. It has narration all over the place. It's as if the studio thinks we are too stupid to pick up on things. Granted, the movie is flawed, but I shouldn't need and explaination of a scene unfolding in front of me. There are a couple of good things here and there, but this movie seems like it got fucked. I'd love to see a director's cut. As it stands now, they could bleep out a few words and show it on Sci-Fi after The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.

Just saw it with like 7 people in Century City. Very funny, not surprising this is from the guy that did Office Space. If they would've just said that in the ads (oh wait, there weren't any), it would've easily added $10 million to the take. Instead they're dumping a great flick, one that doesn't deserve it. Idiots. That's right.. they didn't even call it Idiocracy. I got kind of excited so I went to check it out and was disappointed to say the least. Not as good as Office Space, and definitely inconsistent. But still, certain scenes had me howling. The hooker has barely anything to do. Her character is totally pointless other than eliciting a few slight giggles. And why bother hiring a comedienne like Maya Rudolph if you're not even going to let her do anything funny? She plays as much of a straight man as Luke Wilson does.

Since you are an AICN.com talkbacker then I'm pretty sure you HAVE seen it and laughed out loud at the scene where gilliam is reading the "comment cards" from a recent test screening. Shit. Made my fucking blood boil. I have been such a huge fan of "Idiocracy" since I read about it in entertainment weekly and laughed how they were going to call it "dusk of man" and eagerly awaited something....ANYTHING regarding this film. LOVIN' IT UP 'TIL I HIT THE GROUND! As for test audiences, watch the doc on the Legend DVD where Ridley Scott talks about a bunch of fucked up guys who "didn't get it" (you're high, go figure) and it resulted in the score and length of the film being changed for US audiences. I'd say more, but I'd never top what Bill Hicks said about the process whilst thoroughly trashing Basic Instinct.

I have been waiting SOOOO long for this flick, awaiting greatness from the genius behind Office Space. It's playing all over Chicago and the 'burbs, so I had my choice of like 6 theaters. I saw it in a theater with 1 other person, and we both only chuckled like twice. It's just lifeless. The humor all misses, the premise is thin, and the whole thing is just a bland disappointment. Sorry to be the voice of reason, but it's true.

Go see it! I was at the first show at Alamo South in Austin with about 20 people. I love Judge's work and was bracing to be disappointed. True, it seems it was hacked up and this unceremonius dump into the market is likely due to the film ripping on Starbucks, Costco et al, but while the film has a rangy, rough quality, it is easily the most entertaining satire I have seen since the release of Brazil. Judge doesn't hold back the satire, and that is refreshing, given most film out there is softballed warmed over tripe. This is a degenerate "Wizard of Oz" for the 21st century, a "Wizard of Idioz", if you will. Some sore points with me- quality of effects was sub par, and some scenes did seem to not take full advantage of the humorous possibilities Judge sets up. But the film had me howling at several points and snickering here and there like the best B&B episodes. But overall, this film ROCKS and will become a true cult classic and a top video draw within the year. See it if only to continue to promote interesting quirky edgy filmmaking.

...and I thought it was brilliant. It extrapolates everything that is dumb in our society to its logical end, and paints a frighteningly familiar picture of what the future might hold. "Do you really want to live in a society where everyone wants to explode the one person who is trying to help you?" I don't think the answer to that question will change in 500 years.

My wife and I saw it yesterday and laughed our asses off! Some of you snivelling bitches who 'went and saw it' and said it was 'flawed' are worthless critics... You don't go to see a comedy -- especially one by Mike Judge -- to pick apart flaws. Idiocracy, despite what you may consider 'flaws', is a fucking riot that me and the missus enjoyed from beginning to end. We even agreed it was the funniest movie we've seen in a long time and we walked out, talking about how glad we were to have seen it. Fox execs are the REAL fucking idiots... Idiocracy ROCKS!

There are some very funny ideas but I think the comic timing is off sometimes. Plenty of sight gags relating to advertising and branding. The product slogans are classic. ("Car's Jr.: F*** You, I'm eating"). I'm not sure what it was that didn't quite work for me sometimes. Much like Office Space, this is about the average guy who is still far smarter than everyone around him. Might even be a little bit irritating for the fact that no one, not even Maya Rudolph's character, can related to him. I think this might be worth it just to go back a second time and see if I missed anything in the scenery.
Finally got to see this...

This IS a seriously flawed film... but the question of who should take the blame is one I don't know the answer to. Conceptually, it's hysterically funny - the problem is, a concept alone is generally only a good set-up... and a set-up only carries you through the first act of a film. After that, an audience needs plot development and conflict resolution in the second and third acts, respectively - and that's where this film falters. The gags in the first 30-40 minutes had me in stitches, but after that, I found it difficult to care about the characters or what was happening to them... and, oddly, that may be Judge's greatest joke of all - that a film about the "dumbing down" of America carries one of the most idiotic plots seen in some time. All that quasi-intellectual film dissection aside, the jokes that DO hit, hit very, very hard - I laughed harder at this film than I have in a very long time. It, much like "Office Space", is one of those soon-to-be cult films that will be quoted ad nauseum ("A pimp's love is very different from that of a square..."), and it does get bonus points for reminding me how strangely hot Maya Rudolph actually is - plus she has my favorite line of the film ("You think Einstein just walked around thinking we were all a bunch of fucking 'tards? Guess now you know why he built that bomb.") Go see it - when your friends start drunkenly quoting it at 2 am, you don't wanna feel left out!
