First, I'm ired of folks putting over Walking Dead based on this "how far would humanity sink?" crap. It's a narrative dead end; the only way to continue is to become more nasty, and the book is quickly transforming from exhilarating to exhausting. Kirkman's a cool concept guy, but I'm starting to question his storytelling (see the mess that was this week's Ultimate X-Men Annual #2). Second, I loved the twists and turns in USM #99, but the damn thing is called "The Clone Saga." It doesn't have much impact when you know that every one of those crazy twists can be erased in a millisecond.

And I liked a fair deal of his Spectre run, throw tomatoes if you will. Plus he's done a number of JLU episodes. But Mr. Grendell, I must take issue. Brad Meltzer was the one who made Calculator cool. Gail's just the one who's written him most since, throughout VU and BoP. Yet despite writing him the most, she hasn't picked up on something that Brad and even Marc Andreyko noted immediately: he's a nexus in an "old boys" network of supervillains: given his history, he's tried just about every villain type iteration and in his quiet years he apparently made the rounds in villain social circles. He knows the business inside and out, but in VU and BoP he doesn't get to show that so much because Gail has favored an over-the-top and even freakish portrayal at times. Meh.

Ever since the Warriors run it has been fantastic, and the last few issue have made me crap my pants as I read them. Bendis really does have some huge balls with the shit that he is pulling. I know they are bringing back Carnage next issue, but where the hell is Venom? That's the only thing that could make it better.

The Nemesis that is appearing in "Wonder Woman" is a different one that appeared as a back in "Brave and Bold" in the early 80's. The original died a few years ago (but I can't remember where-the Eclipso massacre maybe?). That would explain the personality change.

A quick check on dcuguide.com revealed that the second Nemesis was a woman killed by Eclipso. The original Nemesis, Tom Tresser, appears to be our man, as it was mentioned he served in the Suicide Squad in this issue of WW. But Prof, I kinda agree with you that his characterization is off, and that's only what I've seen since issue #1, where he was a much cooler cat. On another note, the Dodsons' art is a treat, ain't it?

And that actually reminds me. Going back to issue #0 of Justice League of America for a moment, at the end when Benes' art comes in, I think that's the most honestly beautiful depiction of Wonder Woman I've ever seen, and that could take some doing because there's been a sizable amount of Wonder Woman art in the past year alone.

Benes' Wonder Woman and Vixen are unbelievable. That shot of Powergirl on the cover was nice too. What I like about his stuff (Dodsons too) is that it's not just pin-up work. They don't just look like they're posing for a porn photo.

Thalya, your fetish is well known 'round here, so I don't wanna argue with you about him as I could be horribly flensed in my sleep or something, but for me Meltzer introduced the new take on the Calculator but Simone took the idea and ran with it, truly making the character into something cool. That's why I listed her and not Meltzer, though he should certainly get some credit for it as the originator of the new character idea. It's true I should have at least given him a partial- mea culpa.

If you think she looks good in the new JLA, I think she was as good or better in the Justice League cartoons. I never really thought much of her until I saw her character on JLU, but they always found interesting ways to use her powers in fight scenes and established her as a meaningful character with a relationship with Green Lantern John Stewart. Now when I read her dialogue I hear Gina Torres's voice.

My JLA take
by Uncle Festering
Aug 31st, 2006
02:37:16 PM
Is that what was happening in JLA? I kind of read it differently....granted I read it with a pint of maker's mark sitting next to me....so I could have mis-read it...but. I kind of got the impression the holy trinity of bats, supes and wonder broad were recruiting a league, and GL and BC were recruiting a league of their own. Maybe that doesn't make much sense...but it doesn't seem to me that Hal Jordan would be the type to sit around wait for the big three to make their choices and then be the errand boy to go recruit. Oh and that last issue of the Daredevil arc where Foggy is alive prompted me to ebay the entire run. I'm tired of lame ass "fooled ya he ain't really dead" story arcs. I wonder if the big two publishers ever thought that maybe readership was down because they always cheat readers by telling a story only to find out its worthless to the continuity and leaves readers fleeced (I felt as jipped as I did when I saw the Daredevil movie). Guess they do it so their talentless editors and writers can recycle the same characters instead of coming up with something new. That might 'gasp' draw in new readers and keep old ones happy. and what's with both Bats and Daredevil going off to fight poofs in Europe. JEEZUS this shit is getting lame....I'm gonna start reading books without pictures soon

I thought that when the trinity brought up Hal's pic and agreed on him (after Bruces discern not to have him in - I'll get to that in a moment) that the next page where Hal is with Roy meant that he was already in. Because after the main three, Hal is the man to go to in my opinion. But I can see why you might think otherwise. The two different covers also would lead to some sort of split with those that were with Hal (Roy, Black Lightning, Green Arrow, Black Canary) were on one cover and the trinity with others were on the other. Hmm? I hope that's not the case, but you never know. Thalya? And about Batman and Hal? That WAS resolved more or less in the GL issue drawn by Van Sciver (#9?) where Bruce tried on the power ring and made amends with Hal. Maybe Meltzer should have read that one. That was the only thing the bugged me really. Despite what people are saying about all the captions, I found it to be some good stuff. I think many would agree that we don't always need rock em sock em robots if the characters are handled well. Despite that one editorial mishap of Batman and Hal they were.

I don't get that "take" on it at all. I side with Heathen on that. Seemed clear to me that Meltzer was time-jumping a bit and showing us the Trinity's process of choosing the first level of the team (like Hal) and then sent them out to recruit the others (like Roy). I don't expect there to be two teams though. I expect that there will be a core team of 6 or 7 and then, like JLU, the rest of the heroes are "on call" as needed.

I think I've been on the same page with you before, but I am heartened to see other posters who dislike Meltzer's writing. I find him stodgy and misogynistic. Now, what is da bombolino is Kraven's Last Hunt. Why buy a hardback when a GN is already available, I don't know. But that is one kick-ass story, and I am not even a Spider-Man fan. As someone who LOVED Daughters of the Dragon, and PowerMan/Iron Fist back in the day, I was mildly disappointed by Heroes for Hire #1, but I think that is primarily because of the obligatory Civil War crap, and secondarily because Tarantula isn't much of a character at this point. Still, an entertaining and above average comic I'd recommend. Wonder Woman is a'ight but I preferred Rucka's run. I got no love for Donna Troy, so the white suited Diana at the end was the best part--loved her when she was out of WW togs during Meissner-Loeb's run as well. 52 was decent, I enjoy it's hopping around storylines approach, but didn't get that into the Marvel wedding shindig. Eternals is very interesting to me, but kind of a carbon copy of the original Supreme Power, where the entire series exists only to introduce us to the characters who will probably not unite until the end of the final issue (of the mini).
Not exactly a big Seinfeld fan.

..is totally tits. Playing as Bizarro that is. Shame I'm not likely to be an Xbox buyer.. And Heathen, I think the Batman/Hal thing was more or less resolved, but it doesn't mean Bruce still can't hold a grudge. I mean, he's still holding one over Hawkman moreover, and thank goodness the Big Three didn't bring up Zatanna. I can forgive Meltzer for doing that, moreover, because he needed a lead into Hal/Roy. And also, are you referring to the old cover design or the new cover design for JLA #1, 'cause they played switcheroo a bit (and what's Hourman doing on the cover anyway?).

First off, I love Curb Your Enthusiasm but hated it before I saw it and got a feel for it. I've heard and felt the same about shows like Firefly, Entourage and Battlestar Galactica (still haven't really watched that last one though). Seinfeld was the greatest sitcom ever before Arrested Development aired and showed us pure genius. Having said that Seinfeld is great, it did however have a series finale that makes me cry because it was so bad. I don't even like to acknowledge that it exists. Same goes for Friends finale. Crap. You know what sitcom had a great end? Mother fuggin Frasier. But that's for another time. ; ) *** Thanks for saying that I'm nice, Vale. "Writer Brad Meltzer does not disguise a nominal writing talent behind a gift for long-winded dialogue." Anyhoo, "Justice League of America" is a really appealing book. My hope is that it'll hook younger audiences as well as (possibly?) people who enjoy Meltzer's novels. The fact that the series is off to a good start doesn't hurt either, although I could've done without the Climactic Juxtaposition of Several Concurrent Scenes a la 'The Godfather' and "Identity Crisis" at the end.

If every single cog got a chance to hand in a guest review, I'd be last. Not just because I know the least about comics here, but when I review something, it's usually written down in a stream of ongiong thought, with little structure to it, and no regard for the poor sap who has to read it. < Just a warning. For this. > I got to ask what it is about this title that hooked you, Thalya - were you on board because of these first five issues - or did it happen after? Because I found this TP a very disappointing read. First up, the STORY. We don't necessarily move into the action too quickly, but there is very little presented on our lead character before the reader is forced to believe she can go toe to toe with a giant mutant beast. If I missed the reference to this lady going to the gym or attending martial arts classes, I apologise. But from what I could gather - she is some star L.A. attorney (who smokes - a lot - another reason I don't get how she can be so athletic). Granted, she makes stupid moves during battle ... but this would be true of any crime-fighter's first night on the city. So I found the turn into action very sudden. And this lazy storytelling continued throughout. There are nice touches in the narrative, like the costume in the boot of the car ... the issue about costume storage ... the briuses that hurt the next day ... these work. But then they have this woman allow her son to blow himself into a coma (almost)? And we are STILL supposed to sympathise with her? By the way, she KILLS her victims. Anyway, none of this helped with the clumsy storytelling. And the ART: most of the panels outside of any action sequence were usually way too big for what was going on. The writers could have crammed way more story into each issue. I don't think I have ever read a TP in such record time. The sidekick techno-guy was a nice addition. The references to Firestorm dying had me a little confused as I ignored Identity Crisis. The art itself had a nice grit to it, but I was mostly unimpressed. I wonder if they used Linda Fiorentino as a visual guide for Manhunter, as that is who I was picturing. If you tell me it gets better and they churn out another TP, I'd probably give it a try. But I found these opening issues pretty average.

Sorry I didn't get back to you before now, but my head's been wonky and tired and stuff.. I think on Manhunter overall, the entire perspective was what hooked me: you've got the DCU proper and then you've got this grounded little niche of it, with a heroine who's not so much the smiling happy DC hero of yesteryear so much as she has some pretty major flaws (smoker, divorcee, certainly not the best mom around (but she's a MOM. Just how many superheroine moms are out there?)..). Plus, if anything, the first trade really just sets up her world; as things have progressed, Kate making that choice to be a Good Guy ultimately leads to self-improvement in alot of other areas of her life as well (and about the "how can she be so atheletic?" question, it was recently revealed, a couple of issues ago that she's got some JSA genes (and Ramsey as well, ooh boy)). This series was spun out of Identity Crisis and it shows (it could be why it's not your bag): I love the juxtaposition of mundane reality with big name 4-color superheroics, case in point issue 4, the Dylan Battles story; it feels like a whole paradigm shift from standard-fare DCU stuff. I'm really happy swimming in all the little details and nuances Andreyko comes up with, and while there isn't much story in the first TPB, the entire series takes a slow burn so Andreyko can work in all these nuances where ultimately it's not so much individual story after individual story, it's Kate's story, and we learn a lot as she does. And speaking of Linda Fiorentino, that's the voice model I wind up using for Kate in my head, oddly enough.
When I was reading that TP ...

... all I wanted to do was re-write it. I can see why it's died. I don't know if comic runs are similar to the first 15 minutes of a film in terms of how crucial they are to get the reader/viewer hooked into the story ... but if that is the case, they can only blame themselves for such a weak opening. And saying I wish I could rewrite those issues, that's because, like you, I liked certain things about the character that made her unique. Just wish it was handled better. With so many titles around, I don't have the patience. But if I see a 2nd Manhunter trade I will give it another shot, coz there is potential. ***** Also looking to actually buy and read the Identity Crisis TP. If only so I'm prepped in some way for Meltzer's JLA run ...

was awful. I know the Vision and Red Tornado are contemporary characters with similar origins but the Vision is the infinitely more interesting of the two. And DC's black characters really suck and they always have. As a proud black man, I appreciate their attempts to incorporate diversity into the JLA but Black Lightning's introduction into the team comes off as nonsensical and forced. DC has always been way behind Marvel in terms of diversity and well-developed characters of color. And Benes weak David Finch ripoff is inconsistent and lacking in dynamic too.

There was this code where if a person held the second controller and held down certain buttons (I think UP on the D-Pad and A+B) you could SUPER jump two to three times as high. So not technically a double jump ala Ghosts N Goblins, but cool none the less. Whew. *** Soon, Y, soon. We're looking to FINALLY get our house wired. I let you know.

Other readers saw in the novella echoes of Charles Darwin, who earlier in the century had challenged the long-held religious belief in God’s creation of the universe. Darwin had claimed that life-forms developed as a result of evolution, the extremely slow and gradual changes species underwent in response to their environments. Gone was the certainty of the religious model of life. It was replaced by social Darwinism, a radical new conception of life as a struggle in which only the fittest survived. Some readers considered Hyde to be a model of the strong yet evil individual who would survive while Jekyll fell. Hyde was the natural man, free of the civilizing influences of society and religion. Stevenson himself had received an extremely strict religious upbringing, which emphasized sin and the punishments of hell. He seems to have reacted against this upbringing, and the conflict between religion and science probably interested him greatly. Still other readers found in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde a reflection of the new ideas about the workings of the human mind. A Viennese doctor named Sigmund Freud had begun the investigations that would lead him to create psychoanalysis, a method of analyzing psychic phenomena and treating emotional disorders. Freud believed that human beings are powerfully influenced by impulses of which they are not aware and which are often expressed in dreams. To many readers, Hyde represented Dr. Jekyll’s subconscious desire to be freed from his society’s restrictions.
Fascinating, but i'd like to add the following:
