Seriously, when is an AICN staffer going to offer some real opinions on these things instead of the little non-committal postings announcing the new picture they just posted that are shortly going to be pulled? Where's the open letter to Tom Rothman? Where's the open disdain we all saw for the Fantastic Four? Where's the reply to Don Murphy's rant about all of you? He called your asses into the ring and all of you pussed out with the notable exception of Vern, technically not a staffer but should be. You all bear the brand PUSSIES in scarlett letters until you guys man up and take a stand. One way or the other, take a stand.

Actually, Harry liked the JJ Abrams draft of SUPERMAN. I'm the one who wa a bit displeased with it. Jack Colby got it right above... I never liked TRANSFORMERS. I never watched the show. I really don't have any opinion about the film. To me, the criteria for success will be when I watch the movie. If I like it, then to me it's a great TRANSFORMERS movie. If I don't, no loss since I have no attachment to the material. I can't work up a righteous head of steam over something if I don't have an opinion on it, and I'm not just going to parrot some opinion from talkback. You guys can gripe all day about it if it's important to you... that's what the talkbacks are for, and they do actually get read, so at least you've got a chance to get YOUR voice heard.

I bought Metal Gear Solid when it made the Greatest Hits list. I wasn't particularly interested in the genre, but then when I played the game I thought it was very well done. When Revolver Ocelot was introduced, I thought to myself, "This is like a live-action G.I. Joe movie" for some reason. Whatever reason. And I'm posting this due to the mention of G.I. Joe earlier. Maybe someone will mention Suikoden because I mentioned another PSX game and then someone else will mention Outlaws of the Marsh because the other person mentioned Suikoden, and then it'll bounce to Journey to the West. But, now to be more on-topic! I don't have a strong opinion about this. But I can see myself caring much more if I had watched the show. I just watched a few episodes of G.I. Joe. Although I had a G.I. Joe plastic doll with a rubber octopus and deep-sea diving suit, and a command station.

Where they can't even get high concept franchises right. All they had to do was take the Gen 1 designs and polish them up a bit. Instead they ALL look like fucking puke inducing rejected Insecticon designs. I mean come on, they even fucked up Starscream. Easily one of the coolest looking designs from the Gen 1 set and now he looks like a dumpster with a head. That shredded shrapnel thing their doing looks like shit too. I mean, I can see where the challenge lies since they've had the cgi technology to do transformers and they've BEEN done a few times(best example probably being that Japanese photo copier commercial) but still, what a load of crap.

...I can't help it! So, it looks like he has a speaker for a mouth. I guess that's consistent with his radio voice. Which is a dumb idea. Why can't the movie makers just do something straight-forward? Why do screen writers pull such desperate gimmicks? I mean, aside from the fact that having a broken voice-box will prevent BB from talking to Sam when he's bought, what story-purpose does this serve? (Obviously, all the songs BB uses to speak through will be nice little promos for the bands.) It's just dumb. In fact, almost everything they've changed has been making it dumb. I'd have no problems changing anything from the old literature as long as the new ideas weren't dumb. The whole idea of the Energon Cube making machines alive is just as lame as the devil-cream in Catwoman from the last movie those dumb choads wrote. *** I really want to not care about this movie. Listen, I loved Transformers as a kid (though the movie left me cold). I never got into the whole new fandom of Botcons and Beast Wars, et. al., and just let the TFs be something to think fondly about. (I liked robots and I liked voice actors...and that show had some of the best in the business talking all over the place.) But for some reason, I really got excited about this movie. I hoped it'd be awesome and nostalgic, but also a smarter spin on the story. (After all, a lot of the show was pretty clunky. Never read the comics aside from one issue.) Seems Bay & Co. want the awesome element (well, their kind of splodie awesome with a cut every 0.36 seconds. [I tried to watch Armageddon one night but I got a headache from the editing.]) but not the nostalgia. And I haven't read the script, but really

The End Of AICN: Moriarty Needs To Leave While He Can
by Darth Fabulous
Aug 30th, 2006
01:33:12 AM
This has been said before in a few different forms or iterations, but I am just going to throw my two cents in. Moriarty is the only reviewer/correspondent/editor/ columnist worth any kind of a shit on AICN. Drew, you should just transfer everything you post to the "Moriarty's DVD Shelf" site and completely disassociate yourself from AICN because, frankly, your posts are head and shoulders above the inane drivel posted by the second-tier columnists (aside from Herc) on the site and miles above Harry's pointless ramblings, annoying blubberings about his girlfriend and recent "reviews". Frankly, it is becoming increasingly annoying to try to even locate one of your columns in the sea of garbage on the front page. I still read everything in hope that content will get better, but it has not. I would absolutely love to see a Moriarty/Hercules site...at least you guys seem to genuinely have a passion about your columns and articulate your thoughts/opinions in a passionate, interesting manner. I guess I don't care that you are not a fan of Transformers, but that's the problem that I see here...there are no AICN columnists articulating positions regarding their thoughts on any aspect of this film. You do not care because you are not a fan and there is a void that is not being filled...it's quite simple. AICN is not simply an unfocused blogging site for talkbackers...so to simply put it back on us is a shame, because we don't have access to scripts, sets, filmmakers and the like. You recently posted a two-part column on your Stardust set visit...I'm sorry, but Quint's Transformers columns pale in comparison. Hearing about Bay taking charge is simply not interesting, because we've all heard this before. Frankly, reading about Michelle Pfieffer's on set habits are much more interesting/exciting. I'm just tremendously frustrated with the site these days...I know I don't have to come here, but I'm sorry...the site needs to improve.

I like that it has the insignia on the forehead. It means that other transformers will have it too. I also like the eyes, but the mouth seems to point to the script rumor (haven't read it) that he won't talk. sssaaaad. My primary complain is that, at the very beginning, it was mentioned G1 transformers. I think Bichael May meant names from G1 (although I don't remember s-pork-or-not or whatever its name is from G1). Anyways, regardless of all my bitching, I am happy to see a Transformers movie being made, even if it is in spirit only. Overall I am not dissapointed except for Mecraptron. He (she? it?) does not look like a Megatron to me.

the artistic credibility to "improve" on the original. And yeah smart asses I know the truckload of money he was paid, but seriously. I know if I had an idea or re-imagining or something that I would have the ability to step outside myself just for a moment to be able to say "Wow this absolutely blows" and the thought of releasing something that piss poor on the world and knowing it would reflect on me would make me change it to at least some degree. Michael Bay seems to be lacking in this most simple of human abilities. He seems to be in a state of egotistic fog not seen outside of the typical toddler who thinks that when he covers his face no one can see him, or even George Lucas when coming up with characters like Jar Jar Binks. These designs are bad. in some other robot movie they would just look like fun little b-movie designs, but in a Transformers movie they piss on something that is not theirs to piss on. I really hope that moichael Bay considers himself an entertainer or in a harsher light simply a salesman; because even he himself could not form a cohesive argument that he is anything resembling an artist. That takes vision, something Michael Bay has never had.
Industry Killers and the DESIGNS!
by LordEnigma

IK, Lucas created Jar Jar for his son Jet. Yes, not the best idea to let a 12 year old, come up with a character. However, he did it for his kid, and without an ounce of ego. I am not going to defend the silly Jar Jar bits of business but George needed a defense nonetheless................... .............................. ..........With these designs, I get what the production team are going after. They are trying to make ALIENS...ALIENS. Which works in a way because this film is about an alien invasion. However, the Transformers, had a humanity to them that is seriously ripped apart by these designs. All of the Transformers are WAY TOO MECHANICAL. They are cybernetic beings. They are not appliances. Essentially, they are making a transformers movie without transformers because of people like Moriarty. There are more people like him in the world, that do not care about the property than there are those of us who do care. It's a risk reward situation. They are risking alienating the DEDICATED AUDIENCE of this property in order to try to get the reward that comes from having radically designed robots transform on screen for people who are there to see the big robots FIGHT. While I am not going to call this film an unmitgated disaster less than a year out. Everything that has leaked has led to more and more vitriol across the net. The more bad word of mouth something has online. The slight chance it has of being picked up supposed CREDIBLE NEWS SOURCES and flaunted as REAL ENTERTAINMENT NEWS. The transformers people are walking a fine line. I hope they keep this in mine over the next year.

But glad to see that God is in his heaven and all is right with the world. I am aware they are going for aliens, and frankly I don't give a damn. As for the Lucas statement. I don't want to argue, really I don't. He created his character for his kid...fine. Maybe that's true. But it still takes a massive amount of ego to move forth with something so obviously awful. And I don't mean ego in the megalomaniac sense of the word, I mean it in the todler who can't see past his own limited perceptions sense of the word. Lucas didn't mean malice by it, but as they say, the path to hell.......As for insisting on directing the other two films, well the former sort of ego might have been in play there.
As far as making the Transformer film for non-fans.

The awful thing about people who aren't fans of a in-the-process-of-being-reborn property is that they don't have a fucking clue. And the best thing about them is they don't have a fucking clue. So they are making the films for non-fans...I still ask, why change the designs??? How are these designs more appealing than the original designs to non-fans? These are giant robots, the originals are giant robots. By going with the originals they certainly werent going to lose the money and interest of those who weren't already Transformers geeks. These designs aren't cooler to the laymen. The only thing they have to lose is the support of the fans, whose word of mouth and repeat viewing can help a film like this greatly. Kids would like the original designs as much as these new ones, I know this for a fact because when I first fell in love with Transformers I was a fuckin kid! And besides that now it seems they might be changing Bumblebee to a mute? My God. Literally the only explaination for that is the filmmakers think that that somehow improves on the character....they are wrong. Violently pathetically wrong. Hopefully that is just a rumor. I didn't need the designs to be exact, but Megatron and Starscream look fucking ridiculous. Just awful.

So because you have no personal attachment to transformers you can't see how this being bastardized? I really never cared much for Elektra but fuck if I couldn't see what a shit fest that was going to be. That is a cop out answer and you know it. You sound like Don Murphy, "just wait to go see it". So I have to pay to have an opinion. Fuck that. I am calling a spade a spade and saying this sucks and they should fix it. As a self proglaimed geek, you should be able to recognize when something is being poorly adapted and is ill conceived. Man, I really never cared for pedophilia so I just can't have an opinion on it. I just compared the transformers to pedophilia.....hahahahaha! I love AICN!

But I'm getting behind the fans on this one. There has been a certain amount of over thinking the design in these films. I especially think they missed the mark with Megatron. The character doesn't even look like he fits in with the rest of the characters. I really hate to whine about it, but that design was over-thought and complicated. However, on the other side of things; if the movie entertains and (as weird as it sounds.) is actually GOOD, the designs will be only a minimal gripe. Remember back when the first glimpses of the X-Men movie costumes came out, within the context of the movie they worked. I have my fear that Transformers won't be anything other than a very long toy commercial, but we will all have to wait and see if it works or not.

I am not considering myself to be a die hard fan of Transformers. I have seen all the original Episodes and found them entertaining but nothing overly special. Megatron and Starscream (especially the latter) were my prime reason for watching. As with most movies and TV shows, the villains make it fun. Anyhow, that said, I give the movie more of a chance than probably most fans. Especially since I don't hate Michael Bay. I liked Armageddon and Bad Boys 1 & 2. Pearl Harbor was boring and The Island was not much better. Still, he knows how to blow shit up and I guess that is what this movie will have plenty of. I am not fanatically devoted to the original designs of the Transformers, since A) the series is from the 80's for god's sake and B) We all know that designs were kept simple in the original series to keep it fast to draw and cheap to produce, like so many TV shows of that time. So I don't see a problem with deviating a little or beefing them up a notch. Still, in my opinion most of the original design concepts should at least show in the movie. But Megatron?? He looks like a pile of shredded aluminium held together by bubblegum. He looks like he could transform from the contents of a trashcan to... well... a contents of a trashcan. And Starscream? Even if you don't want to stick with the original design...he's just plain ugly. Not evil or power hungry, just ugly. Still, I'll probably watch the movie cause I don't define my childhood happiness through a cheap and cheesy 80's TV cartoon, even a fun to watch one. Sorry for everybody who does...

One can base an opinon of an unfinished film based off of pre-production woes and production problems and snafus, it's actually quite common. Sometimes you get surprised, sometimes you hit it on the head, but either way, you can make that judgement based off of said scenario.

Some people are getting a little over board with that. I already feel a little guilty about my little comment. But everyone is entitled to their own opinions and should not be simply brushed off as 'over reacting'. After all this movie is an adaptation of something from their childhood memories. I'm still going to see the movie and keep an open mind. But with all the movie 'adaptations' of said memories so far I'm afraid I still feel a little let down. Movies such as: The Hulk, Electra, Xmen 3,Posiedon adventure, Silent Hill. All very well made movies and some good in their own way mind you ...but if you knew these stories and characters when they were new to the world the adaptations seem to leave holes or even butcher some characteristics that were what made them loved. So the worst thing anyone can do is to not have an opinion at all because then its like saying that something that once had meaning to you is now nothing.

They tend to give the original product a sheen that makes it seem better than it was. Show of hands - Who amongst those with an opinion has recently seen a G1 Transformers cartoon? (Serious question.)***As for me...I dunno. They're pictures. I suppose the Transformers we've seen look all right (bearing in mind that I only have a second-hand connection to Transformers - my older brother is G1), but I'll know more about whether or not I wanna see this movie when I see a trailer.

to make, Peanutchan, there's no point in constantly 'reimagining' things that were already amazingly damned successful, and even less of a point to remaking it if you're going to deviate from the source material. Why do you make a Hulk movie? To cash in on it's previous success, knowing that all the Hulk fans will instantly be there and that it will have a certain amount of recognition among nonfans. This constant retooling of successful stories/franchises has GOT to stop. The problem begins and ends with the guys making these movies who believe that they can instantly improve on the source material with their 'unique vision'. Maybe that'd be the case of an amazingly unknown property, but something that's existed for decades AND has already raked in millions of dollars? No, you do what Raimi and Jackson did: you build your movie off the concepts that have already been successful before, bringing the previously existing fans and their instant word of mouth hype into the film, using them to your advantage. You don't go out and choose a direction so far away from the original that you begin to piss off the fans and then BERATE ( hello, Don Murphy! ) them for calling you it. It's hard for me to say this, but even freakin' Uwe Boll is closer to the source material than these guys. Now that's sadness incarnate right there.

Okay, I am by no means a hard core Transformers fan, BUT I did grow up with it as one of my favorite cartoons, and I cried like a baby when I got my very own Optimus Prime, and then I cried again when my older sister broke his legs off in front of me ON PURPOSE!!! I still haven't gotten over that....Usually, I would reserve any criticizms until at least I see a trailer or something of that sort, but I gotta say if these pics are the real deal, and the images of Optimus with flames are for real, I just can't understand it! How can they miss the mark so badly?I mean, the designs are SO classic, and Iconic that I just don't see why they had to alter them so much.I mean, they are robots that change to cars, if I can sustain my disbelief for that I can take it if the robot looks boxy...The thing is, they just don't LOOK like Autobots, they look like robots. All I can hope for is that what ever they end up doing, blows up real good, and moves and transforms amazingly as well. But I think I am going to be quite dissapointed with the way they look. I still don't see why Optimus needed flames?? He's not Hot Rod, he's Optimus! hmm, maybe I am a harder core fan than I thought. Oh well, maybe the trailers when they finally arrive, will make me change my mind. but, I have lost a little hope.

Okay. I can see how that face would piss people off. I'm a big transformers fan of the old days, but let take Optimus Prime to task. His face isn't a FACE. It's two eyes and that mouth shield which moved up and down. You can exactl show tons of emotion through that. And as anyone who's acted on stage will tell you, the face is only a small part of showing emotion. A lot has to do with the voice, the body movements, and the surrounding action (music, events, part in the film, etc) so all you bitching about not showing emotion, cool your jets. you know you're going to see this damn movie anyways.
