first of all HiaP do you REALLY want Mori to do coax, all we'll hear about is Masters of Horror...I KID I KID...I love how the staff has picked up on all our comments that Herc is a 14 year old girl (although I remember when he made his debut back in 99...one of the first things was a report about "Young Bruce Wayne" that eventually devolped into Smallville) and The Wizard, man that was a fun movie, it wasn't just an advertisment for the New Mario Game but also for the Gameboy that had just came out...but still fun

Still, that's one of the many very strange moments in a very strange movie. They need to make a sequel called "Wii-zard". They better rush the production, though. MORI! GET ON THAT SHIT, MR. The American remake a couple years ago, "Wicker Park," with Mr. Hartnett. The studio may have pulled a Miramax/"Shall We Dance" delay, so the focus could be on the remake. And as for the Wizard, it was also an advertisement for the Power Glove. This movie is still fucking bad-ass, though, and nobody has even mentioned the presence of Beau Bridges and Christian Slater yet. Also, I had a major crush on the redhead female lead back in the day.

I always thought This Island Earth was one of the few "A" list scifi films of the studio era. TIE and "Forbidden Planet" have been cited as the last time science fiction literature and cinema were in sync and I've never found a film too prove this false. Now if they'd get around to releasing the rest of Jack Arnold's catalog I'd be happy. Monolith Monsters, definately B list. BTW if you can find the original short story that TIE is based on, treat yourself. In the original, Earth becomes a bombing target in an interstellar war, when the adversaries of the Metalunans find out that Earth is being used as a munitions factory.

the singer for the band Rilo Kiley. Her name is Jenny Lewis and is a pretty fucking good singer. She's cute in an indie rock sort of way. And I know there must be millions already singing its praises but I'm half way thru the 1st season of Veronica Mars and it really is as awesome as everyone says it is. It could have been so horribly stupid and worthless but to all three people who haven't seen it yet, don't get put off by the hype or the seemlingly lame premise. I don't know, I guess I just never got the appeal of the current, as Moriarty calls it, torture-as-horror' trend. At the end of the day, it's still about people being brutally turtored. It doesn't make it frightening or suspenseful, just sort of sick and nihilistic. Ah well, guess I'm getting old.

They ought to rerelease the original. You know that the new one will be shite. Also THE ROBINSONS had a few funny moments, but overall it deserved to be cancelled. It reminded me, at times, of that old HBO show with Martin Tupper. I forget what it was called--but it was the one where they would cut in goofy little clips of old movies to try and illustrate the character's inner mood. Yeah, not so innovative.

Why TIE was chosen for the MST3K movie
by Osmosis Jones
Aug 22nd, 2006
10:55:39 PM
It was because The Brains were trying to appeal to a wider audience than the series (this was when they thought that the film would have a wide multiplex release...hah), and they (wisely) decided that a *real* stinker like Manos or Red Zone Cuba would have had MST newbies running from the theater screaming, despite how funny the riffing was, so they chose TIE because it was visually interesting (and in color), but just stuffy and pompous enough to needle. "Are you boys cooking up there?" ~ "No" ~ "Are you making an interociter?" ~ "NO!"

Fry and Laurie first aired in 1986, the same year as Blackadder II. Not sure which aired first, but as Laurie had a part in only one episode of Blackadder II, I think it is fair to say that their own created and written show launched them more than their appearances in a show created by others...

It's been forever since I saw the film, and I like 10 when I did so excuse me if I'm wrong, but isn't it infact the second warp whistle that they show in the 1st fortress (the 5th stage). You know, the one where you fly up over the ceiling? The first warp whistle is in stage 3 when you crouch on the white block until you fall into the the background, and then you run behind the finish area. Yea, I'm a SMB3 freak. In fact my prowess in it once resulted in one of the best nights with an old gf, but that's a story for another time.

Yowza... what a woman she became. What a singer. Yes, the new solo album is great. You'd be suprised at how many Rilo Kiley fans don't realize she was a child actress and had never seen The Wizard or Troop Beverly Hills and I wind up looking like a drunken douche at the bar... Oh well... Double Indemnity is just this side of absolute perfection and a mindfuck for people that only know McMurray from My Three Sons and the Disney movies... Yeah... I'm done now.

Blackadder 2 launched January 86. the *pilot* of A Bit of Fry and Laurie was December 86. in other words, nearly a year later. also, Blackadder 2 was a megahit (at least by UK standards): Laurie might have only appeared in one episode but bear in mind there were only 6 episodes to begin with and by the end of 1986, *everyone* remembered Prince Ludwig. A Bit of Fry and Laurie (popular but nowhere near as big a hit as Blackadder) might have helped to establish their names but it was Blackadder 2 that truly launched them.

TIE
by Billy_Oblivion
Aug 23rd, 2006
08:15:04 PM
Someone said the original was a short story; I remember it as being a novella or novelette length. TIE was a terrific story. Elements of it have been showing up in various places ever since; it was seminal. For instance: ST:TOS used plot points and ideas in a number of episodes. The title referred to the central theme. In WW2 there were natives on some of those Pacific islands the war washed over. They couldn't care less about the war, or even understand it. Nor did either side give a damn about the natives. Yet they found themselves occupied by one side or the other (or each in turn) because of their strategic location, making them targets for the other side. Plug in earth as the island, powerful aliens as the warring sides and you have the basic idea. A fairly subversive plot for the 50s. Imagine WW2 from the POV of an indigenous Guadalcanal native. As brutal as history tells us Imperial Japanese forces were, being occupied by the allies probably wasn't a lot better in terms of cultural and environmental damage. In any event neither side really cares what happens to the natives. Must have been an uncomfortable read for many back then. I believe Raymond Jones was the author. Science fiction was a lot deeper back then than most people remember. It was the only place really subversive ideas could be examined. If you want to read some more trenchant social commentary wrapped up in a great story from the same period, try to find "One in Three Hundred", or "The Syndic". Either would be eminently filmable as well, hint hint.
