When is AICN going to take a stand regarding Mel Gibson

stop using words like "gossip". That applies to something that would be called a rumor. Gibson has made very public and very bigoted comments before. It's not about "cheapening" anyone, it's about exposing them for who they really are. Maybe some good will come of this and we cease the worship of false idols.

I obviously can't speak for anyone else on this site, but all that's happened is that Gibson has strongly indicated he may be anti-Semetic. If that's true, I guess we can add him to the millions of other anti-Semites in the world. The only time at which his anti-Semetism becomes something we should care about it when he, say, directs a film in which he infuses a whole bunch of subtle and not-so-subtle anti-Jewish elements. I wrote a big piece at the end of 2005 on AICN about how Passion of the Christ was anti-Semetic, and I got blasted worse than I've ever been blasted. People didn't want to hear it. Now it's a tabloid story, suddenly AICN is supposed to address it? Who really gives a fuck? And when you say "since when has AICN been about anything except, GOSSIP", I'd love to know what evidence you have to back that up with. Really. All AICN is about is fucking films and TV (fucking can be used as an adjective or a verb there, it's your call). If you are, as you say, worshipping a false idol up until the point they're pulled over for a DUI, then you've got some serious problems already.

There's too many events from then to now to think that we wouldn;t be much different. My guess is alot of things on a globabl scale would've changed.

And for me, it doesnt take away from him as an actor or director; ill still see his movies in less theyre called "jonny jew and the money lenders". hes still entertaining, still a powerful figure even if hes spouting about some bs jewish prerogative. Mel's allowed to act like an inarticulate ignorant baffon, just like all of us do here mutltiple times a day. Now as for the releases this week? Dont we have anything on nuremberg?

His heroes growing up and still are Jewish. They're called "The Three Stooges." He produced "The Three Stooges" biopic for ABC and it was quite good. The guy got drunk and said somehing stupid. How many have you done or said something stupid? The media likes to make a mountain out of a mole hill. That's how they get to sell newspapers and ad space; by having you read and tune in salivating. If any of us said disparaging remarks, and I've seen it here on AICN, no one would care. Mel's a celebrity. Big time. He's open game. I would have never let this incident happen. I blame the bartender and the valet who, under California law, are responsible for him. One, the bartender should have cut him off and had a cab take him home (All restaurants have the option to pay for that cab too.)but, he was probably worried about his $20.00 tip from Mel. On top of that, it is illegal to serve an intoxicated person and obviously jerko bartender kept them coming. 2. If I was that valet and I gave a drunk his car keys and he got into an accident, I would be so screwed. They should have known better and if I was the manager that restaurant, those two jerks would be out the door and that place better have a good lawyer.

Overrated. It's not even in the same league as The Wire, Rome, Rescue Me, BSG, or VM. I'm fairly certain it would have been cancelled if it hadn't been scheduled alongside 24. It's mildly amusing, but doesn't do anything all that original or daring. The conspiracy theory crap is so mind-blowingly unoriginal it almost ruins the entire show. "Shadow organization that secretly controls everything!" and that's the deepest it gets. Sad.

About Mel Gibson and "gossip"
by Ye Not Guilty
Aug 8th, 2006
01:27:20 PM
First allow me to say I'm sure Mel is a very cool guy and I would quite like him if I ever met him personally. Second, I have an alcoholic in my family and when I read the police report of Mel's arrest I instantly recognized an actively drinking alcoholic. However, it doesn't excuse a couple of things that have become crystal clear - that Mel Gibson holds some repulsive personal opinions regarding jews and the holocaust, and that Mel broke the law by driving drunk. Mel's friends and fans will each have to decide for themselves whether to judge him for his opinions, his life and work, or some mix of those. I personally find what I refer to as "the outrage police" very amusing. These are the people who not only find something outrageous, but insist that everyone else have the same reaction, or else be judged to somehow be less worthy of existing. Everybody has the right to have their own opinion. Now, Mel has entered an out-patient rehab and has apologized for his remarks about jews, so can we all just kind of move on with our lives now?

I for one support Mel Gibson. He got drunk, big deal! He ain't the first and he/she won't be the last to say something off-colored while intoxicated...Besides did'nt they find an empty bottle of tequila in his car? Well i know first hand that consuming too much tequila will bring out the beast big time. I remember back in the day when i did ten shots off a white girl's navel, i got so looped that i yelled "SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL KKK" and i'm black...So let ye without sin, cast the first stone, if not, get off your sanctimonious high horse and shut the fuck up. AND DON'T BE CALLIN' MORIARTY AN ANTI-SEMITE SUPPORTER!

by Demetrius

02:49:11 PM
First of all, glodene, he wasn't that drunk. Secondly, it's hardly the first time in Mel's long career that he's said bigoted shit. If you put yourself in a position like Mel did by coming off like someone who was chosen by God to make a movie about Jesus then, guess what, you're pretty much setting yourself up for a fall.
The issue wasn't that Gibson got drunk and said things.
by DanielKurland
Aug 8th, 2006
02:54:11 PM
And I don't want to start a debate here, it's that he has said anti-semetic things, AND made the Passion of the Christ. There was ambiguity whether he was blaming the Jews for the death of Jesus, but now that you know a bit more about his beliefs (and yes, I know he was drunk) it seems obvious that he was blaming them, and he made the film as a means for millions of people to share his beliefs.

i like how everyone is forgetting the fact that they found an empty bottle of tequila in his car. sure you mention it, but he must have been fucking TRASHED, right? i don't really know anything about the situation, but it seems to me that the thing we should be focusing on here is how idiotic and dangerous that was for him to do, and how many other times has that possibly happened? since we all know that we're lying when we pretend to the cops that we never speed unless they catch us. of course his comments about jews show a lot about his character, i look at him a little differently after passion of the christ even, but still...
i cut myself off there
by kimosabi
Aug 8th, 2006
03:25:19 PM
but still... i think the driving while trashed was a lot worse than some moron saying that shit. on the side note, i think him making passion of the christ, how he did it, and how immediate the worship of the movie started show that the movie was worse than anything he could have said unless he started praising hitler or something.

Trust me people, when it comes to DUI's and living in Malibu, it's a totally different reality. All i can say is that sober people ain't got no business on the road in Malibu at certain times after dusk. It's all about The Lifestyles of The Rich/Affluent & Decadent and unless it's something really fucked-up (suchas maligning the Jews), it's usually swept under the carpet.
Defending Gibson?
by TheRealMoriarty
Aug 8th, 2006
03:34:44 PM
*sigh* I shouldn't be surprised. If you don't write things out in crayon, making them so explicit that there's no room for misinterpretation. We don't cover people's personal lives, and we never will. We don't print gossip about who fucks who or who's got a drug problem or who's a drunken bigot. As far as my attitude on Mel Gibson, I was one of the few attendees of BNAT who walked away irritated and upset by what I thought was an obviously anti-Semetic film, as you can read http://www.aintitcool.com/disp lay.cgi?id=17075 in my original review. Or you can just call me a racist because you're a fucking pinhead. Your choice.

by Demetrius
Aug 8th, 2006
03:39:41 PM
Just as Mel has said crazy shit before, he's said that he's also driven while intoxicated before. If he really has a huge alcohol problem, then I feel for him, I hope he gets better. However, alcohol is clearly not his only problem. A guy who has said the things he's said about gays, about women, about wanting peoples intestines on sticks, is clearly someone who's not quite right in the head. The alcohol, the religious zealotry, and probably just how he was raised have made him into quite a shithead. He has the right to say whatever he wants, but people also have the right to reject him for it.

I suppose we can write stories about aliens- but never see one. Or a super-hero, but never be one. We can also make historical dramas, but never have lived during those times. Dogville and Manderlay are films made about hate, anger, and bigotry- that just happen to take place in America. What's weird is I'm asking for more attention to a film about racism and misguided solutions, while the current gossip is about a seemingly racist filmmaker who got trashed in his car. I suppose that if this is what's seen on TV in other countries- well maybe Trier's justified.

Mel was bombed before he went to the restaurant(Must have held his liquor pretty well before he entered. Still, I would have never served an intoxicated person.
