I read the same basic description for Fantasma in a Toronto Film Festival news release and made a mental note to avoid it like the plague. Glad to hear my instinct was right.

why do respectable festivals like toronto and melbourne insist on programming this crap? It's a shame because it made me overly cautious when choosing films to see at the Brisbane festival (also on at the moment). My choice of films is lamentably "safe" this year because I have suffered through interminable festival films in the past. It makes it more difficult to seek out the films which are actually good. That said, I have enjoyed the films I have seen so far - Breakfast on Pluto, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Whole New Thing. Highly recommend all!

Burnt by a random film festival choice? We've all been there. In 2004 I saw TAMALA 2010: A PUNK CAT IN SPACE. Jesus wept. I'm not too keen to share the experience, or even acknowledge that it happene; all I'll say is if you have to eat your spleen and live in a cave for a year to not see this movie then do it.
Actually that does bring up the interesting question of

how does actually get selected for a film festival? What is the process actually like? And what is the criteria? Why do I have to sit through a movie like 2010 a punk cat in space in the first place? Why is it legal to even be given the option?
TAMALA 2010: A PUNK CAT IN SPACE sounds awesome...

I'm gonna check it out immediately. I have no idea what it's about, but going by the title it has to be good.

Bloody Hell, he must be getting up there. Which reminds me that I want to watch his Faust again, with the creepy life-sized marionettes. Want to see Piano Tuner too of course ------------------ does anyone know if David Lynch had much to do with it besides raising funding (which is pretty ironic considering how hard it is for him to get his own stuff made)?

I think by David Lynch, you meant Terry Gilliam. And by Terry Gilliam, I mean he rules. Don't know how much he had to do with the actual production... I'd suggest very little, given how strong a vision the Brothers Quay tend to have. On the other hand, I could be wrong. We'll have to wait for Bob McCabe's next book to find out, I suppose.
Thanks Lat. I see my confusion now.

He has to go through hell to get his stuff made too. And they're both Geniuses. Oh and fifty lashes with a wet noodle for 'Svankier', you terrible man.
