I stayed away from The Benchwarmers when it was in theaters. I love Tommy Boy, Happy G, Waterboy, etc. But the real bad reviews Benchwarmers received kept me away. Until last night. My wife came home from the vid store with it. I was disapopointed. But, I watched it anyway. Holy, freakin hell - I really liked it. Made me laugh a lot. And Jon Lovitz's house kicks MAJOR ass. And Mori, I'll have to look into Broken Saints. Hadn't heard of it until now. Sounds interesting.

But "The Ski Lift" may be the funniest episode of the show ever. Also, the stuff they did in the finale, with showing a montage of all the stuff Larry did, and how LARRY criticizes someone for THEIR faux pas in the end would have been a perfect ending to the show, but I'm sure next season will still be funny, I just don't know how they could have a more complete ending.

I never reviewed it but I actually watched that movie a while back, and yes it's as bad as everybody's imagining. I don't know why Moriarty compared it to Seven though. It's a police corruption thriller with LL (the only not-embarassing performance in the whole movie) as the not-as-bad-cop-dragged-into-co rruption and Justin Timberlake is the small time journalist who stumbles across a scandal and has to risk it all to expose it. It's obviously inspired by the LA Rampart scandal, but it has no sense of realism at any level. That would be fine if it was an action movie but it's a serious drama. If only Morgan Freeman was narrating it would be a perfect parody of the type of characters he always plays - he's the feisty mentor journalist whose wisdom includes explaining to professional journlist Timberlake that journalism is about facts, not supposition (I think they hired a high school newspaper editor as their journalism adviser) and repeatedly accusing him of "doing it for pussy." There's one random part where Freeman puts on some rockin tunes and does a crazy dance around his house. I think the attraction to this movie for most people is Timberlake, they don't like him so they're hoping he does a horrible job as an actor. I honestly thought he would be fine, but you got your wish. He clearly doesn't know what he's doing and has some pretty weird, whiney line readings. But to me the worst performance was Dylan McDermott as the leader of the corrupt cops. He's chewing everything, scenery and not scenery, hitting on every tough guy cop villain cliche in the book. A total embarassment. But not really in an entertaining way. ROADHOUSE 2 however is entertaining, and I'm hurt that Moriarty seems unaware of my review of it on this very sight.
I disagree about Ren & Stimpy's lost episodes
by Orionsangels

I think when the show is aloud to let loose and run wild. It looses something. Part of the appeal of Ren & Stimpy was that it was teetering on the edge of stepping over the line. Sometimes the show took a small step over that line and you couldn't believe they got away with that. It was also fresh and new in 92. These lost episodes seem to be in competition with every gross out series we have today and are so over the top. That they enter some new creepy disturbing dimension. Just how out there can we go? Will show you. Now don't get me wrong. They have their moments, but a lot of the charm and flair is gone. Since they can do anything they want in these episodes. They don't seem daring or bold anymore. It just seems like John K. made them do sexual and gross out things because now I could. There's also a lack of real story telling. One episode is just Ren torturing animals. Another is Ren & Stimpy living inside a giants mouth. When Ren humps a girl, feels her tits and Ren & Stimpy have sex. You know it's too over the top and for some reason Ren & Stimpy have very few dialogue. Again don't get me wrong. They're still worthy to be in the Ren & Stimpy collection. I just thought I was gonna have more fun watching these episodes. Instead it left me disturbed and scratching my head.
Ren and Stimpy's Lost Episode are TERRIBLE

I grew up watching the old show, and when I bought the first and second season on DVD last year, the show was even smarter and funnier than I remembered it. I missed the new show on Spike tv, so I rented it. Good God, they're almost unwatchable. Watch Space Madness or Rubber Nipples, then watch the Lost Episodes (like the dreadful Naked Beach Frenzy) and it'll put the difference in quality into sharp relief. You'll have a hard time believing John K. is reponsible for both of them. By the way, I agree with everything Mori said about John K. himself. I can't think of anybody who has more of an impact on cartoons in the last few decades. Too bad he forgot what made R&S great in the first place.

Hopefully it will have some good extras. I'm guessing a commentary with the whole cast would be too much to ask. You know a DVD is feature-lite when they make a point of listing "interactive menu" as one of the features.

It was a blast of 80's nostalgia to re-visit a show I haven't watched (aside from those syndicted Amazing Stories "movie" packages) since I was 11-12. And, unlike a lot of 80's stuff, AS hasn't dated that much. The production values are very high, the musical scores are wonderful (imagine a current TV show with music by John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Georges Delerue, Leonard Rosenman and Danny Elfman!), and the best eps ("The Mission", "Dorothy And Ben") still work like gangbusters. Hell, they got MARTIN SCORSESE to direct an episode!

Between your hugely entertaining LitW review and your defense of HUDSON HAWK, you are my new fave writer on this site (sorry, Massawyrm). 'Hawk' is genuinely great, and so quotable. It was stupid. It was ignorant. THe jokes were just not funny, (Macaroni tonight! YES! YES! *runs in circles with retarded excitement*) John Lovitz was the only good thing about the film. I couldn't believe how awful Heder and Spade's characters were. It was just plain bad. Dumb dumb dumb dumb. Only one good quote from the film: Spade's "You're not a sword." But that was it!! I couldn't stand the thing. God. so bad.

Try all 13 for which it was nominated. This either means it is an incredibly exceptional film, or it was a weak year for films. Anyway, Abbie Cornish is extremely talented, and her performance with Heath Ledger in Candy is also top-rate.

While Ren and Stimpy was initially brilliant, and he was screwed over, it really seemed like he also lost his way and any real sense of direction with his projects. I've got a box full of original production material with his notes and some scripts and a ton of drawings for that Green Monkeys thing he and Spumco were putting together potentially for the Disney Channel at one point, and it's just lousy. Completely generic stuff, no real inspiration at all. He ought to really dig in and put together a pitch for an entirely original feature film or something.
