movie with Russell: Escape from New Orleans. Now THAT, my friends, would be worth its weight in gold. I'm sure Russell will do fine with the role, though Rourke would have been interesting... also glad they're both feature length, so it seems less like one of those lame Tarantino side projects. But From Dusk Till Dawn the best Rodriguez footage? Are we not counting Sin City for some reason?

I hope, this will be more "Kill Bill 1" or "Reservoir Dogs" than "Pulp Fiction", "Jackie Brown", "Kill Bill 2", his "Four Rooms"-Episode or his "CSI"-Episode, or otherwise you need a good explaination for stinker #2, right after "Poseidon".

Clarification is needed...

04:16:23 PM
From Quint's transcript, I got the impression that by Tarantino saying "these aren't just one hour movies" is more of a statement that these are quality films that they put full effort into and that they will still be an hour each, but shouldn't be dismissed as only "half films". Hopefully I'm wrong though, because both being like 90 minutes would be fantastic, and judging by the script lengths, maybe this is the case...
My apologies...
by DanielKurland
Jul 22nd, 2006
04:24:29 PM
That one hour comment was in fact not a quote, so it looks like it will be two complete features, and this will actually be the 5th Tarantino film.
My guess...
by Chief Redcock
Jul 22nd, 2006
04:36:18 PM
...they'll probably be released as two separate movies... Grindhouse: Death Proof and Grindhouse: Planet Terror, or something. Then you can have the option of seeing both or just one. It's just more marketable that way, most people don't have time for a 4 hour movie.

. . . with there fake move trailers to boot. I thought it was all there for one price w/ an intermission in between the flicks. QT said they were trying to recreate old exploitation double features at the drive-in. Thought I read that somewhere. Maybe I dreamt it. Who knows? I wanted Rourke but Russell will kick ass. I get sick of all the Bruce Campbell love around here, but was actually wanting him after I heard Rourke was out. I was excited enough for this but the Carpenter score news got me extra pumped! Damnit, I want this opening this Halloween.

The entire purpose of this collaboration was to emulate the B-movie double feature of GRIND HOUSES, splitting them up would defeat this purpose, and would have a lot of the audience just thinking these directors made shitty movies, instead of movies intentionally fitting the "B-movie mold". Also, if you split it up, where would the mock trailers go?

King Kong and LOTR proved 3-hour movies can be profitable, and with Tarantino and Rodriguez at the helm, names in the cast, and horror being a hot genre these days, a 3-hour double feature is pretty bankable. I can see the marketing now: From 2 of the 3 directors of Sin City comes the direct result of geeks with money!!!

I read QT's Deathproof script and the character is VERY CLEARLY written for Mickey Rourke. It describes his "redneck elegance," and Stuntman Mike speaks in a certain wry, ironic cadence that is totally Mickey Rourke. Kurt Russell, God bless him, is not an antihero, even as Snake Plissken. And he's certainly not a disfigured cackling sadist. This seems like a poor choice. Also, the killer character is the ONLY good part of the script (except for the two action sequences). Miscast that and I dunno what you got.

Apparently you people are completely missing the point of Grindhouse. In the 70's, double features were COMMON. In fact, some theaters only booked movies if they could play as a double feature with something else of a similar nature. The fact that Tarantino revealed that the films are feature length really sell it for me. I love the Talkbacker who whined about whether the film will be too long, and that people "don't have time", I wonder why that is for the intended market? Do you mean that you don't have time to sit your fat ass back at home and get on the internet to bitch about things you cannot control? Jesus. I say bring back the double feature as standard. Hell, I still have a one-sheet from the 70's where Dirty Harry and Magnum Force played as a double bill. You geeks today are a bunch of impatient pussies...

Kurt Russell only gets jobs in Hollywood because of Goldie Hawn's connections!!! All of his movies...every last one of them, always bombs at the box office...with the exception of a a so, so hit in respect to the movie Stargate...and believe me, that had nothing to do with Kurt Russell, rather, it had everything to do with the concept!!! That movie was going to do okay no matter who starred in it!!! This is yet another example od Hollywood's notorious White Boy Welfare System...where you don't have to have a fan base, and your movies don't ever have to be successful at the box office, etc., it's just all about who you know...who's black mailing you...who you are blackmailing or who you are sleeping with!!! The latter of which, leading to more black mail of course!!! Just ask Kate Hudson for instants. Her career has made her a multi-millionaire, and yet, all of her movies have bombed at the box office!!! These people don't even have a fan base and they are still getting grossly over paid jobs in high profile movies. Don't believe me...well, I submit Lindsey Lohan as more proof off this incestuous Hollywood (in crowd) "I got you back, you don't have to be good, or even liked...to make millions" kind of garbage!!! Yeah...your next 10 jobs are guaranteed, no matter what...so don't sweat it buddy!!! Lindsey Lohan, save for two hit films, has had a string of box office bombs...about 6 to 7 in a row now, and still...the big pay checks and roles keep on suspeciously rolling in!!! No, you don't have to be good...wanted, or even in demand by any audiences or fan base whatsoever...you just have to be a part of the Good 'Ol Boy Network ...and show up to the party for your free multi-million dollar pay check!!! Looks like Tarantino has put Kurt Russell on his Man Crush Casting Couch!!! But, let me tell you something ...GrindHouse will bomb at the B.O., and we all know it!!! And if Tarantino's next 10 or 11 films bomb at the box office...or turn out to be absolute trash...he'll still be making multi-million dollar deals no matter what...because that White Boy Welfare will always keep rolling in the dough!!!

I love Russell. Glad he got the job. But...yeah...I've read both scripts. And they put Kurt Russell in them. And get John Carpenter to do the score and make it a double feature blah blah. Everyone geeks out. But the scripts are less then impressive. Everyone is going to shit themselves wanting to like the movie cuz its supposed to be badass. Let me tell you...Deathproof was so boring I could barely read 20 pages. It took everything I had to finish the thing. (possible spoilers) It's 40 pages of girls driving around Austin, ending up at some bar, giving some guy a (clothed) lapdance, taking about sex and food in some really cringe worthy dialouge. Then a little action. Then 4 more chicks doing the same thing and then a car chase. I couldnt believe Tarantino had written it. I won't say too much about Terror. I promised my friend I would. Except there is some weird shit. I mean not like in a cool way. Like a what the fuck is this. Someone mentioned the stump gun. Yeah...if you think thats cool...then this is your movie. There are a lot of characters. A lot. And most aren't really that interesting. I was turned off. It is better then QT's. Here's the other thing. It sounds like a cool deal to have it be that long. But its going to be like 4 hours. So if you hate either one of the movies or worse, both, gonna be a long movie. I think its 4 Rooms territory. I wish everyone would get some perspective on these guys. Not everything they shit out is gold. Especially RR. He's never made a really classic movie. Some people might argue for Sin City (which I disliked) but even if I give you that...thats a lot of mediocre films. People may want to emulate his filmaking ethos but I have never met anyone who wants to make films like him. And by the way, there's a lot of mythmaking. I live in Austin. He has a massive crew, studio and infrastructure. It's not like he's out there with his little video camera and some friends. You want to be impressed with someone...try Shane Carruth who made a movie (on film!) that reaches Kubrickian heights in terms of ambition and intelligence for no money. Instead, everyone flips out cuz RR rides on the back of Carpenter, who actually had his own style and themes and cranked out a few genre masterpieces. RR acts he's the first guy to think of zombies as infected people. And QT...buddy, lay off the coke and ego. So, that's cool, call me a hater. I just expect more from these guys. And I'm tired of them getting a free pass. Still, props to RR for fucking McGowan.

remeber darwin mayflower's review of kill bill on coming attractions (R.I.P. corona)? he ripped it apart for being boring and describing every single detail. from house decorations to the chopping off of arms and heads. and we all know how that turned out. my point is, he's a filmmaker not a writer. a lot happens from script to screen.

I'm kinda worried. Kurt usually plays good guys don't he. Oh wait, he was MacReady in the Thing and he sort of was the bad guy in that movie. Man, that movie is a classic now. I had no doubt in Quinten's capabilities; he pretty much made Travolta, Sam Jackson, Robert Forrester, David Carradine and Darryl Hannah badasses overnight. Hell, I wanna see Darryl Hannah in something again. He could do a good job with Kurt. Still, I'd like to see Carpenter come back strong too.

What CG house is working on it? Since they'll be the one actually making the film. That's just how Rodriguez operates nowadays. The CG houses make the movies, he gives the interviews. Face it, he looks better in a cowboy hat than a gang of pasty computer dorks. Or, will he'll actually be doing something for this one? If so, bad idea. Once Upon a Time in Mexico was the last time he tried that, and even this site couldn't give it a pass with a straight face. He should just keep letting guys behind computers make his movies for him, since they seem to be better at it.

I mean, Christ. First of all, to the idiot that said the script was bad... uh... it's a fucking B movie! It's intentionally bad! Why is it such a hard concept for some people to understand that some movies are cheesy/bad/whatever on purpose? It's the whole fucking point. Second, why can't you people just sit back and enjoy the ride? The internet has really destroyed the movie-going experience. People go into these things already knowing everything about them and already knowing if they're gonna like it or not before they even buy a ticket. What happened to the days when all you knew about a movie was what you saw in the trailer and what you might have read in Starlog magazine? It's really too bad that it's gotten to this point. How about just wait and see the dame thing before deciding it sucks?

Then watch Sin City and tell me it's artless. Sure his movies don't require brains, but Rodriguez makes some of the most flat-out fun movies out there (speaking more of his R-rated features, obviously).

You keep laughing idiot!!! Back in the 80's, Goldie Hawn was bigger than any female star in the business...and became a hugely successful producer of her own film projects. And the way the incestuous nature of Hollywood works, once they let you into the in crowd, unless you are a total asshole...you always have the big connections. What, you say you want your daughter to be considered for a role? We'll do you one better...the part is already hers...no questions asked. What, you say Kurt needs some jobs so he won't be made to feel like a himbo...and a gigolo? Sure thing Goldie...whatever you want! Kurt's got the job!!! That's the way Hollywood works folks...believe it or not!!!

You may not care about political affiliations...but you're not considering the rest of Hollywood!!! And if you're the Weinstein Brothers, why should you help keep the lights on for a Bush supporter???!!! Yes Bush, somebody who doesn't believe in freedom of speech...who is anti Hollywood and anti arts!!! Now, Rourke can have all of the freedom of speech that he wants...but it doesn't mean that the Weinstein's are obligated to finance it!!! Rourke is finished in Hollywood!!! Time to star in porn!!! Ball Busters 2 will be a great starring role for him!!! I can't wait to miss it!!!

I am sure there was a schedule conflict and that Mickey Rourke will return for another Sin City. His star is on the rise (again) and his political preference will hurt him no more than it has Sean Penn or Ron Silver... (Wait, did I say Ron Silver? Did his political preference hurt his career or did he?) I can't recall but I have still enjoyed his work as well.

And Sean Penn is pretty much in agreement with Hollywoods's political viewpoints...that's why he is still getting the big job!!! Now as far as Rourke is concerned, you are right...he's not finished...Why? Because he can always do Big Pricks 5...He'll be the king of porn!!!

I know Sean Penn is very liberal (I think he even makes liberals cringe sometimes) but I don't think Hollywood is as liberal as it is made out to be. California is a weird place to begin with but I am trapped in the f*cking OC and these people don't know what the hell they stand for. I lean left but love my more conservative friends and am still of the belief that both sides make the nation great. Robert Duvall is conservative and about as cool as they come. I love my righties and my lefties all the same and as long as they don't wroship aliens... (oh go ahead, worship away, I'll love you guys too!)

I'm about as leftie as they come but I still shy away from Penn. Maybe it has more to do with him being a dick. Or maybe it has to do with him almost destroying the world in Team America. I think Hollywood puts forth this liberal image because they're the much more vocal side in Hollywood right now, helping with campaigning and making leftist-themed films like Syriana, Good Night and Good Luck, and dare I say V for Vendetta. But obviously from names we've seen here (Duvall, Eastwood, etc.) there's still some big hitters for the right wing in Hollywood . . . and though I may detest his politics if Rourke isn't brought back for Sin City 2, there'll be a lot of anger on my part.

And I'm guessing you've got a few other conspiracy theories too. Where do I even start metal? While I'm sure there's some favortism/exclusionism in the film business, no actor is ever going to get a major role in a feature that way unless they can also deliver on the bottom line. The film business, probably more than most others, is a meritocracy. Doesn't matter who you're related to if you can't deliver. As for other flaws in your argument: If Goldie Hawn is so powerful, why aren't Speilbergs wife and daughter (just as an example)getting all the acting jobs? And if Hollywood gives away so many jobs to people who lose money, why haven't they gone out of business by now?! Is this nothing but an elaborate excuse for your own broken dreams, metal? Kinda sorta sounds like it.

First off yes it is awful that people like Kurt Russell and Lindsay Lohan get to still make movies even though they are complete corporate and fan dissapointments but Indy films (unless made in a backyard somwhere) suffer from the same type of politics. People get jobs from being friends with people, sleeping with people ect. As for Grind House it sounds intriguing and i'm not worried about the script sucking because all in all they are both directors not writers. There style is what sells tickets. As for Kurt Russell I can see why he was cast due to being in two great cult films (escape from New York and The Thing). But that doenst make it any better. Rourke would have been better but honestly I'm tired of come backs. Look at the horrid movies that we have been forced to exsist on the same planet with since Travolta was let loose again. I respect that they are two directors that are paying homage to the truly stylish and forgotten. Granted it is all through a completely commercialized venue but folks it's all we got left. Indy films have ceased to exsist and if I have to see on more indy flick about a messed up guy and a free spirited girl i'm going to take a hostage. At least when I walk into the theater to see grind house I can fool myslef for a little while because on some level they were trying to do something cool. Attacking Tarrantino and Rodriguez just seems pointless there are so many things worse in Hollywood. Do I wish That they had both stayed truly indy? YES! Do I think that Rodriguez made one good film that was a fluke(el maraichi) YES! So yes we all hate hollywood and wish things were diffrent but is anyone doing anything about it other then complaining. Pick up a camera, tell a story and when you get offered 10 million dollars to make a film, the thing you spent your whole life in pursuit of are you going to turn it down. When a studio says a skies the limit with your imagination. BRV
Spielberg Is Too Easy!!!

What did Spielberg do for his first wife?...Nothing career wise. And what is he doing for his second wife, a part from her role in Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (where he met here) ...nothing!!! Why? Spielberg's wife produced a movie called The Love Letter in which she starred with Tom Selleck (Spelling?). Reportedly, on the set...during a love scene, Selleck and Spielberg's wife were to act out a kiss. The scene rolled as planned, however, well after the director yelled cut...the two reportedly kept on kissing. The director reportedly yelled cut several more times, to no avail...the two kept kissing anyway!!! The whole crew was shocked by Mrs. Spielberg's (Kate Capshaw...spelling?) amorous and seemingly inappropriate activity with Selleck. Rumors of this got all around the industry and reportedly Spielberg went to the set when details of the situation got back to him. End of Kate Capshaw's producing career, as well as her acting career...And in regard to Tom Selleck...acting parts mysteriously dried up for him like a grape turning into a raisin!!! So much for tongue kissing the wife of one of the most powerful men in Hollywood!!!I assume Selleck's alledged on set romantic overtures to Capshaw was a dig at Mr. Spielberg due to the fact that Selleck lost the role of Indiana Jones To Harrison Ford, thanks to his then newly signed contract to star on Magnum P.I. for CBS---This has haunted Selleck for years! Perhaps he blames Spielberg for not fighting hard enough to secure the job for him...I don't know. And in terms of Spielberg's acting daughter...that's not his daughter, that's his step daughter...who some say he secured a job on The Practice for. Since then, she has gotten married and that's the last time I've heard of her acting career. Perhaps she's lost interest, or is doing some other acting work that I am unaware of...as of present. Either way...if she wants to work...a job is only a phone call away, from the hand of her step father. And in regard to Kate Capshaw...would you get her anymore work if you were Spielberg after that Tom Selleck incident? I wouldn't!!! In fact, I'd keep her ass barefoot a pregnant if I was him!!! No more acting!...No more producing!...No more show business!!! Int. Shot...Steven Spielberg's office. The phone rings. A shadowy figure answers the phone. Spielberg: Hello...Hi Goldie! What? You say Kurt Russell needs a job? Sure thing! I'll just call up Tarantino!!! Don't worry about it!!! The check's in the mail!!! (beat) I hope that guy MetalWater isn't listening to this!!! (The End?)

I don't know where you're coming from saying Tarantino is a director but not a writer at heart. He's a great director, obviously, but his films have given us some of the most classic dialogue in movie history. I'm speaking here of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction first, then the things that Sam Jackson says in Jackie Brown, then the Superman monologue from Kill Bill. This guy is one of the best screenwriters out there as well as one of the best directors.

Not to sound like a perv or anything, but will this represent the first time Tarantino has approached the old S and N in any of his movies? I mean, it's a Grindhouse flick, he kinda has to, right? It seems to me sex is a subject he has ignored more or less in his movies, which is remarkable as what he makes are more or less big budget 70's exploitation flicks, and those things were ususally chock full of it.Does he just not feel comfortable asking actresses to take off their clothes? Is it fear? Or is his world view just a violent, not a sexual one?
Tarantino Is A Misogynist!!!
by MetalWater

Extreme violence is sex to Tarantino!!! Violence and cruelty is the pornography of his films!!! And in that regard, his influence on Robert Rodriguez is equally perverse. From Dusk 'Til Dawn and Sin City are two examples of this miserable twosome's increasingly unhinged hatred of women, and GrindHouse will be their graduate thesis on violence against women, as well as women, used to perpetraite violence against other women, and men...A blatent metaphor for sex and pornography. Even Kill Bill, which was dressed as a female empowerment flick, was more about the torture and physical, and psychological destruction of women, than it was about the female hero's revenge against a man. Bill didn't suffer, but every women in the two films, Kill Bill...Volumes 1 and 2, were made to suffer horrible humiliations and pain, including Uma Thurman's character, the Bride. But the men in those movies had quick deaths. Yes, they may have been brutal...but they were quick!!! But as I said, all the women were made to suffer lingering pain!!! And the two male leads, well their deaths were clean...and picture-esque!!! And let's look at Hostel, which Tarantino produced...and the uglyness that was done to the asin girl!!! This was completely unacceptable and unnecessary on so many levels. Tarantino appears to have anger issues with women that are being manifested in his films. This is how a drug crazed rapest thinks...not a real film maker!!! Clearly these movies are a thinly disguised cry for help from a troubled man.

Look, we all know that QT was pissed by people coming and qouting pulp fiction at him. BUT THAT IS WHAT WAS GOOD AT. take the line from Jacki Brown about ak47s. Classic or the royale with cheese line . I went to see jackie brown and like most people who saw i was waiting for at least one cool QT line. but it never happened. Looking back I now hate Kill bill, sure some of it looked great. That was a film that QT wrote while he was not firing a full cyclinder and the decision to divide film in two is now hidnsight a mistake the second film did not live up to the hype and the both films taken together are a disappointment. Kill bill was to me a cold film which with just the odd flash of the QT magic but nothing more. Read Easy rider raginf bulls, for more stuff on The berg. Spielberg claims that he never took drugs. not true. While filming jaws which turned spielberg into a wreck, the berg ended up taking uppers, downers and sleeping tablets. ET was called night skies. it was a group of hostile aliens which take over a farmyard. the movie was a go picture. Spielber went on holiday to italy where he bumped in Melissa Mathieson. Who was writing a Childrens Bed time story. Rick Baker, had made up the 7 alien heads. When Spielberg came back and announced that he was scrapping night skies and ordered that Bakers puppets be scrapped. Baker was locked in his studio and got out when the night gaurd got a key. The next morning baker came back to find his puppets gone. Baker and spielberg never worked together again. Spielberg went to italy and discovered Carlo Ribaldi. I read that in David huges the greatest sci-fi films never made.

Oh, Metal, you have split open like the corpse of a fat man left nine days in the badlands sun, spilling the maggot clogged rot of your psyche all over the talkback. All you seem to remember from QT's and RR's movies are the acts of violence that are perpetrated on women, even though in both of their films far more, and far more horrific violence is visited on the men. Is this because you focus on the violence done to women with sick, blinkered fascination, everything else in the films fading to gray background while you wait for your next "fix"? Or is it because you are so threatened by women that their inclusion in the oft-brutal "male" world of the action film makes you crave a humvee, something steel (metal) and powerful that will allow you to speed like a ship at sea (water) through the women (and probably ever so many other things) which threaten you? Just curious which one it is. Trust me, projection isn't the solution whether your problem is the former or the later, and a talkback is no place to come for therapy.

Most brutal killing in the two movies was visited on the richly deserving Michael Bowen's Buck, who is hamstrung and then has his head crushed by repeated blows from a hospital room door while he lies helpless. ...compare that to the honorable by action movie standards deaths of Liu (nearly instantaneous death, much shorter time to anticipate oblivion than Bill and probably no feeling of pain with the top of her head removed, unlike Bill with blood dripping from his mouth as he prepares to take his five steps to oblivion) at the end of a sword fight or Fox's quick death by knife (though at the end of a very typically brutal fight that wouldn't have probably threatened you at all if it had been between Kurt Russell and Keith David, them being men, which happened in just one of the incredible genre films Russell has starred in, They Live). Compare that to the indignities suffered by Budd or Pei Mei, killed by poisons of various kinds, painful, helpless deaths robbed even of the opportunity to defend themselves. Anything else you'd like to be wrong about in this talkback?

And no, I don't find a woman being decapitated to be a clean death!!! As you may or may not know, in some theories, a person that has been decapitated may... or at least the brain of the person, may continue functioning, and thus thinking...for up to five minutes until oxygen and blood starvation fully sets in, and kills all mental functions. Hence, it is feared that the victim of decapition may be aware of their condition while their mental processes persist to function in some capacity to the point of final death. A cruel and brutal method of killing indeed...one which Tarantino is surely knowledgeable about...thus the reason why he placed a decapitation scene in Kill Bill in the first place!!!

...concerning QT's relative merits as a writer and a director. I agree with Mechasheeva to a point, QT was one of the greatest screenwriters Hollywood had ever seen. Nobody could do dialogue and character development under difficult and even implausible circumstances like he did (although Whedon came close and Smith focused more on the all-too-believable situations as backdrops for his characters). QT's stories, while often simplistic in structure and derivative in nature, had the virtue of approaching familiar (and potentially boring due to overexploration/exposure by other film makers) subject matter through the eyes of well-realized characters with distinctly bizarre perspectives. That's what made Reservoir Dogs so much better than the movie it was based on (City on Fire) and what made Pulp Fiction so watchable despite the gimmicky anachronistic editing experiment it ultimately is. You weren't so much interested in what was going on as you were in what the characters thought about what was going on (case in point, you never do find out what was in that briefcase). That's really saying something about QT the writer. Jackie Brown would've been a much better film with a good editor in the mix. It had more story than Dogs and Pulp put together, but QT was starting to feel his directorial testicles drop. He wanted everything to look cool and trusted to the actors to interpret the characters for the audience, so we ended up with Sam Jackson doing "Evil" Jules and Bobby D. mumbling the few lines of dialogue he was given. A lot of talent was wasted in that picture. From there on out, it seemed like it was all about QT the director indulging whatever "visionary" itch or wild hair he felt like scratching (although the first few minutes of From Dusk 'til Dawn show traces of his former brilliance as a writer, the majority of the writing, acting and directing on that flick is just laughable). As a director, QT is like a kid repeating jokes he's heard other, more talented people tell. He does his Hitchcock thing (camrea panning away during moments of extreme violence and casting himself in smaller roles) and his Kung Fu theatre thing and any other little trick he remembers from his obviously mammoth movie-watching days as a video store clerk. But he hasn't done anything new or innovative as a director (unless slapping together moments from a bunch of different films in anything that isn't a Zucker Brothers' style comedy is considered innovative). I think the point about his avoiding sex and nudity in his films is an important one. I honestly don't think he has the faintest idea how to write or direct a serious (or even playful) romantic scene that goes any deeper than the awkward junior high level of Mia Wallace and Vince Vega's interaction in Pulp. I'm not going to say QT's obviously never been laid, but my guess is he didn't enjoy it much and that might be because he couldn't clearly envision his own face over that of whomever he was "auditioning" at the time. I dare say he's never really been in love with anything except his own ideas (and those he's co-opted). He's never matured as a writer (mostly, I think, because he stopped caring about the writing side of things) or as a director (because he's still hung up on recreating all of those cool nostalgic cinema moments that inspired him to make movies), but he started out being pretty damned good at the former. I'd love to see him get back to that.
