Well, actually, I'm sure there are numerous short stories out there, but I still haven't read STARDUST. I've loved everything else -- can I assume this needs to go at the top of my reading list?

I'm a short drive away from Pinewood and would have loved to have covered this for AICN. Would have saved Matthew's mob a few quid anyway. C'est la vie. You want ass-kissing over journalism? Go for it. On the other hand, I'd rather do a report for you on what will undoubtedly be THE British film of the year, Shane Meadows' 'This Is England'. He's just wrapped the edit last week (150 hours of rushes down to 90 solid minutes). You may have ignored the brilliance of 'Dead Man's Shoes' over something as sloppy and shallow as 'Layer Cake' but ignore Shane's new one at your peril. It's going to be HUGE!

I'm not a big fan of the story, so I'm hoping the movie is good enough to overcome my hesitation to see it. Unfortunately, nothing I've seen or read leads me to believe that will be the case.

We expect geeks to seek out Spaced and suchlike, but I didn't know Green Wing was similarly enjoyed. Are these shows playing in the US, or are Americans downloading torrents? Nice to see the Britcom knowledge is expanding beyond Python and Fawlty Towers anyway...

It's all on the film people's dime, right? I know that, Moriarty, you will point to your negative review of Lady In the Water as proof that you cannot be swayed by friendships and paid trips to London ... that you'll give your honest opinion no matter what, but, really, you knew, from audience reaction, that Lady In the Water was pretty annoying to audiences. No matter how much you may have wanted to positively review it, you have to maintain at least a SEMBLANCE of independent thought, and the occasional negative review (conveniently against a movie everyone else is bashing) provides cover for the next time you do a puff piece review that errs in favor of your friends in the industry who really really want you to like it. NOT doing a puff piece on Lady becomes a necessary strategic sacrifice in order to maintain credibility when you give in and let your paid trips influence you the next time. It's lovely that you got to visit London and the historic soundstages where Kubrick and Spielberg shot their films, but I won't trust a word of your review on Stardust (unless of course early audience reaction, that you are aware of, is overwhelmingly negative.)

You tool. This is a news and reviews site. If Mori doesn't go on the trip, it'll just be a reviews site. Personally I really enjoyed the account. I'm glad he's enjoying himself. Or would you rather he went all the way to London then whined about any insignificant little detail that made him doubt the production. He mentions the chance they are taking on one of the lead characters. Christ what do you want from him? I know you wish you had been paid to travel over here to London and visit the set because presumably you would have acted like a spoiled pompous brat to prove your lack of allegiance to any film - or how you can't be 'bought'- I'd just rather read some interesting, hell, cool - news. So I'm glad Mori's visiting us over here, while you furiously curse your social and professional life inadequacies.

http://tinyurl.com/r8lvu http://tinyurl.com/mn73u http://tinyurl.com/s9d9q Even Gaiman fans seem to think it's disappointing. Gaiman's schtick seems to be "twisting" well trodden myths around, to make them more "interesting", meaning that he really doesn't respect the original myths, or what they mean to people, just wants to get attention for his deliberately and compulsively warped version. But apparently the corporate drones who slaver after the Lord of the Rings / Narnia /Harry Potter success are desperately beating the bush looking for more "fantasy". What we are going to get is a limp CGI shitfest based on a shitty novel by an insincere fantasist. And confused reviews from AICN reviewers who don't know what they should think of it anymore, due to their inevitably being tainted by the studio's seduction of them.

Elstree was also where THE SHINING was shot. Way to fact check Mori! And, by the way, the 007 Pinewood soundstage where SPY WHO LOVED ME was shot burned down after LEGEND filmed there and was later rebuilt.

Because he is a trolling bastard who has nothing interesting ever to say (see any of his posts). A website spamming, multi-username motherfucker and a complete idiot. I loved Cigarette Burns, thought it was one of the best of the series. What have you done with your life (apart from completely waste the voice you are given here)? ...I know I'm playing right into his baby trolling hands by responding to his post which is why this is th elast thing I have to say on the matter.

I think you're completely wrong about Gaiman. He's playing with the myths because they interest him. I have no doubt he respects them, but those stories have already been told, so remaking them makes little sense. Twisting them around as a gimmick for gimmick's sake would annoy me, but any mature reader can see Gaiman is doing much more than that with his stories.

... you're certainly free to think that I am incapable of objectivity. You're certainly free to be pissy about Paramount paying for the trip. In the end, it's far more important for them to have people come to the set and write about what's going on than it is for me to leave my family and my other work obligations and screw up my body with a 45 hour stay in England book-ended by 20 hours of air travel. It's hardly a "luxury," but more a necessary part of continuing to cover films in development. If it really bothers you, then don't see it. No worries.

great report, mori. looking forward to this film very much. mark heap, yay! very nice to see michelle pfeiffer gracing the big screen again. robert deniro, over the top? no, i would have never guessed him capable of said acts. great to see vaughn on a passion project rather than a rushed studio job. oh and thank you for ridding this site of forumfatale. thank you oh so much. now bring on part 2 of your visit! already

You know, Snuffles, I was nodding my head along with you until you came out with that ridiculous analysis of Stardust at Amazon. Negative reviews count, but positive ones don't? The hell? If you're going to question the validity of Amazon, you have to be consistant about it. Likewise, your comments on Neil Gaiman are fairly dumb. As it happens I think both Gaiman's work in general and Stardust in particular have numerous flaws, but you clearly haven't actually read any of his stuff and are working overtime to be dismissive. Despite reservations about the source material, I actually think it sounds like Vaughn and company know what they're doing with the adaptation: for instance, Vaughn's comment that they needed to add a third act to the story is absolutely right. The idea of playing it more as a comedy sounds like the right idea as well, though some of the stuff Moriarty says here contradicts that earlier report. At any rate, there's no harm in being skeptical of set reports like this one, but I really don't see anything to actually indicate that it will suck. Claims to the contrary seem forced at this point.

I had the privilege of working at Pinewood for several years in a post house, I think the day I stepped on the 007 stage was probably one of the best days of my life... geek greatness! hehe. I also worked on a film called Sleepy Hollow for Pinewood as a work experience placement, which happened to be a very educational experience for me. They didn't have to pay me, but they gave me a good amount of money for just two days work! They seemed to want to help me out and get started in the industry and they were excellent to work for! The even paid my parking fines!!! Anyways, If your around the Pinewood area Mori, then I'm only 10 mins drive from Pinewood and a 15mins drive from Heathrow you if you want a drink:)

...a similar high-end treatment of Gaiman's Neverwhere, which is my favorite of his novels (thus far). Stardust is excellent, and if done well with such a noteworthy cast, could draw enough people in to take notice. Gaiman is an talented storyteller and gifted writer, and well done films of his work would be great to see. There was a fairly low budget BBC version of Neverwhere some years back that was as good as the low budget and fx tech would allow at that time, but a no-holds-barred approach to the Gaiman 'verses is what is needed to really do his work justice. I have read that director Richard Loncraine has signed up to do Neverwhere, but no actors are signed and the whole thing is still in "concept" phase. A good Stardust will get us a good Neverwhere, too, I hope, and the more good Gaiman films the better in my book.
Neil Gaiman Interview Explaining Stardust
by Memryslin

Neil Gaiman: I think in the case of Stardust, what really inspired me to write it was that I wanted to read it. If I could have just gone to a bookstore and bought it I'd never have had to write it. I've always loved the work of the novelists who, in the 1920s, wrote fine faerie fantasies aimed at adults - before there was ever a separate fantasy genre --people like Hope Mirrlees (who wrote Lud In The Mist) and Lord Dunsany (I did an introduction to the reissue of his book The King of Elfland's Daughter, and was surprised, on rereading it, to realize how much I'd unconsciously taken in from Dunsany) -- I wanted to do one of those: simply a fairy tale that would make adults feel like kids again, while they read it. CNN interview 2/09/2000 --And he pulled it off brilliantly. And with his involvement I have high hopes the movie will recapture the magic in a new medium. Thanks for the great posts Moriarty.
LOVE GAIMAN want STARDUST to be Great!

I LOVE STARDUST THE BOOK! I LOVE GAIMAN! however - i was underwhelmed with the stardust presentation at the con. i dont blame gaiman because he is a genius who is left in the hands of a lame studio but this movie, book and gaiman deserve better. the presentation seemed scattered and weak - it was GREAt too see CHARLIE VESS but lorenzo. why? why? i get he is a big movie poducer but NO ONE CARES and the transformers moment was stupid and gaiman should have never allowed it. back to the point - i wanted to love this footage and i left a little dissapointed - yes it had funny moments: tristan trying to get past the guard, deniro cutting a deal with gervais and even pfeiffer as a witch - GREAT! However - this may sound silly but it just didnt "sparkle" it seemed flat. i know the VFX werent in but it shouldnt have mattered. I will give this movie my 10 bux for Gaiman and the Stardust in my head and the one i hope it will become on screen.
