Master Chief's Voice...

If they're not taking off the man's helmet, and they don't have Steve Downes doing the MC's voice, I'm not watching that movie.

Yeah it's such a biased term. just because the compass points north, doesn't mean that's where the actual top is. We don't call the USA 'upover' partly because it's somewhat retarded, and also...nah that's the whole reason. I wonder how long I can keep this talkback to myself for silly ranting...

It's because USA is the center of the universe and always on top. So the universe revolves around USA. IF there actually is anything existing outside US.

Why don't you email Richard Wolstencroft and say, "Hey, you'd get a ton of free press coverage on the internet if you invited some journalists along"? If MIFF hadn't sent me the free tickets, I'd probably still be going, but I wouldn't be breaking my back to write reviews of everything I see. I'm not going to pay for the privilege of promoting people. As many indie filmmakers who struggle to get their films made know, all they need to do is send me their films. The past couple of weeks, I've reviewed Court of Lonely Royals and Love In The First Degree, both of which were made on shoestrings, and all they had to do was pay for the postage.
Halo would make a great movie

Because even though the games are great, there's a lot of fluff ripe for trimming that would make excellent cinema.

that called it one of the best scifi scripts in years (which wouldn't be hard to do, really) and that it's gonna be a balls-to-the-wall war flick, which, if it's true, sounds good to me. for the voice of MC, ron perlman is a good choice, but i think keifer sutherland would fill the role admirably, too.

No bad blood twixt me and Wolstencroft; it's just that if I were running a film festival, I'd want as much coverage as possible. He did actually offer me something a couple of years ago, and I responded with "Sounds good, tell me where and when", and I never heard back. So there you go. And I would review short films if they were sent to me, but all I tend to get are features. And that's fine, I'll look at anything. But my attitude isn't because I want tons of free stuff. This is a volunteer gig for me, and despite the free screenings and so on, it actually ends up costing me money more often than not. Sure, I could go out and attend MUFF, MIFF, SFF, BIFF, hop over to Adelaide and cover their festival, then back to the East Coast to do all of the short film festivals that run throughout the year... but I have a lot of things going on in my life, and I can't afford to seek out and promote all of the indie filmmakers in the country (not to mention New Zealand, which I also cover). Getting coverage on AICN is a pretty big deal, and if people want it they need to -- at very least -- send me an email. Send me their film. Invite me to a screening. It's really very simple.

Appreciate the effort, but an invite would do me little good at this point: Sunday's out. I'm seeing a band called Wagons with some friends, and I've bailed so many times that I absolutely have to be there. So best of luck to everyone on Sunday. Tell you what: someone email me a list of the winners, it'll be the first entry under "Awards (etc)" next week.

Everyone who has seen them has the same story: a friend tells you to go see a band, but he won't tell you anything about it. After a lot of pressuring, he finally tells you the band is Wagons and they're a country rock band. After laughing at the idea that you'd ever go and see a country rock band, you're eventually talked into going. You go, and your jaw drops as you witness musical genius. You then go and tell friends about how awesome they are, and they laugh at the idea that they would ever go to see a country rock band... I've only seen them once (and only their opening set, at that), but they are really, really good. Don't judge me until you witness their genius first hand...

Like The Exploders? Or even Epicure, perhaps? Or Country Rock as in Our Keith Urban? Because if it's the last one, I'm going to stab someone. Not least because I used the word "our" to describe someone. Anyway, the point is that the Melbourne music scene is great, the Melbourne cinema scene is (relatively) great, but it's still Victorian.

Very good point. It's like I've said so many times before: Halo in itself isn't all that good (I'm sorry, XBox fanboys, but that's just the way it is), but it contains the seeds of a great movie/movies. The fact that I'm not blown away by the game doesn't stop me from anticipating the movie.

By the same principle I just explained, Half-life is a better game, yes, but it would SUCK as a movie. Think about it!

jayjew: Love Fourplay. Big fan. Best covers ever. Monkey Butler: would compare Wagons to someone, but I've never heard any of those artists. Zerogundamx: don't apologise -- now you've explained how things really are, I can stop enjoying the game.

He truly is the worst VA I've ever heard. He is only capable of Donald Duck, and other throat voices. My 12 year old can do that, for pete's sake. Yes, he can certainly act, but voice for Gollum was attrocious.

I'd love to see. Master Chief not taking off the helmet means little character development and that will suck total ass. It's fine for a game but for a movie...NO WAY! IT'S GOTTA COME OFF! But at the end of the day I'm just hoping they actually put a man in a real suit of armor and don't go the shitty cg Clone route.

... The Mist. I'm sure that would make a good film and also, that Half Life would make a good film. After all Pirates of the Caribbean was based on an amusement ride ... the thing is, they used the initial premise to come up with a really good script. They could do the same for Half Life if they came up with a good script. Yes, I know the history of movie making has shown it's a big if but at least it's not completely impossible.

Are you telling me that Master Chief doesn't EVER take off his helmet? That's not such a bad thing... but... wow. How long is it taking to decide on the voice??! What a ridiculous thing to ponder. USE THE ORIGINAL VOICE-ACTOR FROM THE GAME. There's your answer. It only makes complete sense. And to come to that conclusion, it should only require common sense.
Casting Master Chief and "common sense"

This is HOLLYWOOD. You have scads of useless executives and producers who have to have their fingers in the pie to "justify" their jobs. You have to play along on some casting nonsense to let them feel that they're getting stroked. Then at the right time, you make them think it was THEIR idea to cast the original voice actor. "Perfect, *I* just SAVED the film! I'm BRILLIANT!!!" So don't get too excited until they actually announce something. It's all in the game.
