The most difficult task they face in making this film is the transformation sequences. The second most difficult task is producing robots that don't look completely horrible. This doesn't look that bad, so they just knocked one thing off the list of to-do's.

And I don't wanna sound like a naysayer (because I have absolutely zero attachment to the transformers, and Michael Bay doing big fuck-off robots beating the shit out of each other sounds like fun) but that shot does seem a bit like a Power Rangers toy. It's probably just the lighting making it look plastic-y, and it's just the wrong half of a single robot, so I ain't gonna write the whole thing off now, but hopefully the tanks and jets and things look a bit harder.

I have high hopes for this movie. It practically was my childhood back in the 80s. Hopefully they do it justice by not making unnecessary changes. That's all this is, I saw it on my last visit there. Nothing to do with a movie you should, frankly, be totally ashamed of yourself for even being excited about. Getting jazzed by a Transformers movie is like still having the hots for Farrah Fawcett long after she turned into an eldritch she-mummy.

and I'd be excited if they were making a new cartoon movie, but for some reason, I don't care much about a live action one. Granted, I'm curious to see the new look, just not excited. My 'meh' is not for the design, which looks pretty good, it's for the entire concept of a live-action Transformers.

i've been on a film set before, but i've never been around full-scale transforming robots. michael bay has a lot of courage to attempt to make a full length transformers movie, using full-scale replicas of each and every transformer. It's a task so huge and to date never been done, it's almost unfathomable what he is going to do, and how he is going to do it.

LOOKS GOOD! EFFECTS WILL BE LIKE JURASSIC PARK
by moto
Jun 27th, 2006
12:08:04 PM
Like Spielberg did in Jurassic Park, they will be using both CG and real effects (like what they did with the T-Rex). These models do not transform I'm sure. They probably have certain final movements for the camera to catch to make the transformation look more real, but not a full transforming model. This will be a BIG tentpole film! So far AICN talkbackers haven't jumped on this image... SO FAR. PLEASE don't judge this movie, that hasn't even been completed yet, based on some production spy photo. Soooo many pictures taken on any big budget movie set can look terrible. I'm sure the first picture of Darth Vader or Chewbacca that came out before the original Star Wars made people go, "What the fuck is that? Lame." But we all know how well they worked within the context of the movies. I think Tranformers will be the one movie that talkbackers/fanboys will be TOTALLY surprised by. Of course, they'll never admit to it.

First and most importantly, are there any plans for Omega Supreme and/or Metroplex to be in this movie? Now a teaser pic of either of them would be cool-news-worthy! Okay, second, why is everyone so down on The Island?? It wasn't earth-shatteringly great or anything, but it had a good story, good action, Scarlett in skin-tight jumpsuits. An all around good time. What gives?

I think this is going to be just fine. Rag on Bay all you want, but he's great at making Superhappy Fun Bang Time Boom Popcorn Excitement FunHouse movies... and that's all that Transformers can/should ever presume to be. It's not rocket science, folks, it's big robots beating the shit out of each other. Quit bitchin.
Umm, this is the only physical robot prop.
by JudasRemains
Jun 27th, 2006
12:17:19 PM
It was confirmed a while back on several other web sites, I think Superhero Hype and TFormers that what's pictured here is the only physical robot prop in the movie. The rest will be CGI. Now non-correctlyness. I'm personally a huge Transformer fan, I was there for G1 and everything from the masterpiece that was Beast Machines to the craptasm that was R.I.D, with my interest only falling around Cybertron. So I have a lot of hope for this movie with it muted and a sturdy fast forward button. Not so much for with it unmuted, although the star did a good job as Chaz in Constantine.

12:17:22 PM
This movie will be hyped in a big way. But I have a feelign it'll go the way of M:I3, okay box office, but not HUGE and while some of the masses who have no predisposition to the subject matter will find it acceptable, there will be a big group of people who just don't like the way it turned out. Unfortunately, in the end, it'll probably still make enough $$ to justify greenlighting a sequel. But making big bank doesn't even begin to make a film "good" and it certianly doesn't justify making a shitty movie to begin with. And, sure, out of context it sounds silly, but that's why Transformers should never make the leap from cartoon to live-action.

I agree that a straight-up, 100% faithful adaptation of the cartoon would suck. Even as a kid I thought they were freakin' stupid.) I just want a balls-to-the-wall, transforming-robots beating-the-piss out-of-each-other in-the-middle of-a-big-city movie. Looks like an Alternators version of Bumblebee to me, which is Kool and the Gang imho. Especially if VW is being so uptight with its license because the robots may or may not beat the everloving fuck out of each other "Ve are Germanz! Ve do not condone ze violenze!" I have to wonder if they're going to go with the G1 cartoon face (kind of boring, imho) or the toy face, which would be too alien, I think. Either way, they're sure to piss somebody off. And isn't that really part of the fun with movies like htis and X3? I mean, for those of us with some perspective, we get to see a decent, entertaining film AND we get to hear Comic-Book-Guy-style geek meltdowns from anyone who's latched on to a very specific and particular facet of a pop culture franchise. What more could we ask for?

It looks interesting. Not what I was expecting at all though. From the car choice to the descriptions I've read, BB seems like a composite of G1 BB's relationship with Spike crossed with Hot Rod's wildness. I'm not sure how I feel about all the exposed mechanical aspects. Transformers never seemed to have a lot of exposed mechanics. Of course, there are exceptions to that. I'll have see them move before I feel good about the design theme.

ive been waitin a long time for this movie. i love when people say that a movie is gonna suck before its made.Fuckin bunch of faggot-ass babies.BRING ON OPTIMUS!!!!as for the idea of aliens robots being absurd............ummm a spider thats bites a man and gives him super powers is way out there.i love all the comic movies and i cant wait for MEGATRON to bring his almighty robotic wrath upon all you human fuckwads! this movie will kick your asses. get "jazzed" about that. also this looks like bumblebees pre disguise look. when the transformers get to earth they still have their cybertron vehicle forms. in other words he hasnt chosen a disguise form yet.hence no wheels or hood or car shapes at all.

...until I saw his one-word explanation at the end for all the content preceding. Apparently he's on his "Period." So what kind of man-child will bitch and whine about a movie based on a candid shot of a half-transformed robot car because it isn't the same exact type of car he played with when he was a kid? That's what I thought. Guys like you make it easy to laugh at the "purists."

I also question how much appeal this film will hold for mass audiences- especially as a major 4th of July release. It seems more like something that should be targeted towards a niche audience. I mean, I'm in the demographic that should be thrilled with this, yet I could care less. Even though I loved the Transformers as a kid, I haven't given them a second thought since 1985.

...I didn't have my jackass to english translator working. Were you insinuating that I was the one hung up on something from his childhood? That's funny. Because unless you just discovered Transformers last week and the concept of Cybertronian forms existing prior to the robots coming to Earth (an element of canon you estimate is beyond the grasp of the filmmakers and privy to only by true fans such as yourself), you seem to be awfully entrenched in some geeky history of your own. And it's making you sound like every normal person imagines a fan of a property like the Transformers must sound (i.e. a scarily sheltered, shallow, hypersensitive little boy). What I and rational folks with a reasonable fondness for this property (be it simple nostalgia or downright adult geekery) are advocating is that we wait to cry for Bay's blood and declare this a sacrelige until we know what the happy fuck the movie's going to come out looking (and, perhaps even more importantly, feeling) like. But don't let anything like rationality or reason get in the way of your childish insistence that it be an all-or-nothing homage to whatever specific adventures you used to play out with your toys on the floor beneath your dining room table. How dare the producers not ask your opinion about how these concepts and characters should be represented on the big screen? The very least they could've done was read your mind and find out what, exactly, would have made you happy. Twit.

At least change the story to describe the machinations leading to the image removal. It's how proud AICN is of itself that kills me here. Well, why not have a story proclaiming -- for all the kingdom to see! -- exclusive animatics of the Silver Surfer!! Prepro image of the Flash! News of the Batman Sequel! ...only to take you to a page that says "BLAHBLAHBLAH REMOVED AT STUDIO REQUEST". Then AICN can continue being proud of itself for being Minas TirGeek, and can continue not showing anything for it.

by Mace13

That's most likely the type of robots were gonna be getting for this movie . Harry said in his article with Michael Bay awhile back that the pictures of the bots that he was shown were more terminator/endoskeleton looking and not like the bulky, blocky robots were used to. He said they were more lean and you could see the mechanical parts of them. I have also read very similiar statements elsewhere stating the same things. This pic of BB confirms everything i've read about them. So you should expect all of the robots in this movie to look similiar to what BB looks like in this picture. And don't be thinking that they're going to be adding extra yellow cgi panels or anything to flesh him out either. That's not gonna happen. What you see is what you get. I'm personally not liking this too much myself. That just doesn't look like Bumblebee to me. If they would have stuck with that being Hot Shot like they were originally planning incase they couldn't get the name "Bumblebee" back then ok. I could see it being Hot Shot. But not BB. And like other people are saying... How the hell is that going to transform into a car? They're too many mechanical parts and not enough of the boxy, bulky stuff that they wanted to get rid of. I'm thinking that the jist of the transformations in this movie are gonna be like when that armored cocoon went over the batmobile in the Tim Burton Batman movies. Remember that? I've always hated that type of shit. Anyone wanna make a bet with me on that one?

I totally agree with you. That design is just plain weird looking and ugly. Especially the forearms which look like some sort of retarded fin/wing. I think the filmmakers have put their energy into the wrong area of the Transformers universe. Yeah the basic theme of robots turning into cars and planes is good, but everything else, in essence, is a stupid fucking idea. What sold those toys and got everybody's interest wasn't anything but the cool designs. Blocky or not.
Brings Me To Another Point
by SnakesOnABicycle

09:36:42 PM
Realism. What the fuck is the point? Recently all I see are things being ruined by it. I mean, people are trying to make giant robots and Batman realistic... BUT THEY SEEM TO BE FORGETTING THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE THEYRE GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS AND A MAN/BAT. People are sacrificing design and concept for a reality people don't really need. And any argument about grounding things in realism to further emerse the auidence is just idiotic. Sin City was all style and character, and it elicited more emotional attatchment than that new giant turd of a "realistic" Batmobile ever did. Bay is gonna ruin a franchise with great possibilites because he's too insecure to have anything up on that screen other than shit that looks like it was ripped from the pages of Popular Mechanics.
Hey....It looks alright.

I agree with your point on realism as well. The film industry doesn't need to drastically change things for a movie adaption of a specific property in order to make things more realistic for the movie going audience. We like fantasy type films. We like Sci Fi.It seems like they're basically thinking that we won't understand something unless they take away all of the fantastical elements of a property and ground it to our real every day world. I'm sorry but most of us aren't that fucking stupid. We know when were being talked down to. And we won't like it. Doing that type of crap usually just ruins everything about that particular property that made it cool to begin with. The only thing that they need to do in order to make a kickass movie adaption of something(which hardly any of these movie big wigs have figured out) is just treat the source material with respect and seriousness. There is a reason that this shit is popular in the first place. If it's a winning formula already why take the risk of changing it? You don't have to have every little geeky detail transfered to a movie.Just make sure you stay true to the source material and keep things recognizable and there ya go. No problems. Why do they think that lil johnny who's never seen a Transformers cartoon won't like a movie adaption of it unless they change all of this stuff about it in order to bring him into the fold? That doesn't make since. Chance's are that if lil Johnny is introduced to the source material he'll like it just as much as the people who are already fans. So why bother changing things? The only thing happening by doing that is that they're pissing off the people who are already fans and that made that particular property popular in the first place. And why would you want to do that because if it wasn't for those people then said property wouldn't have made it to the movie making process to begin with. And I would think that overall the fans know best.If they don't like it then they ain't gonna buy it. Honestly, just think about all of the movie adaptions that have taken place over the past few years. Even if you liked the movie I'll bet that if you were a fan of the source material it was based on whether it be comic, cartoon or whatever that there were still things about it that you didn't like because it had been changed for no particular reason other than to dumb it down for mass appeal. And doing that is just stupid. Ok, I could rant on some more but screw it i'm going to bed.

I'm really at a loss in explaining the lack of body panels. I'm thinking this is BB after he gets his ass handed to him by the cop car. Another weird thing, those "forearms" look and awful lot like the bottom of feet to me, and I don't see any hands, of course that would make his "head" a robot ballsack, so perhaps those aren't feet.....unless he's stuck in some half transformation because of the battle?

First off I have no idea how Hairy Nutsack could mistake those forearms for feet. If you look on the right side of the pic just to the left of the dudes calve who's wearing the black shirt is clearly a hand/fingers and a wrist coming from the forearm. Secondly the reason the panels look weird is because it's a brand new Camaro and every vehicle is gonna be new/prototype models and automobile advertising is gonna be ever present in this film. I really hope I'm wrong and that it rocks but we'll see.
