Why cant it just be about the same characters. These sequels always go to the new kid. EVERY disney sequel is like that. Theyve ruined those and now they will ruin a truly classic fantasy BLEH. Bring on Thundarr the Barbarian 2 - Sheila The duaghter of Ookla and Thundarr. Yeah you read that right.

...it is so random. Of all the 80's movies to be followed up, it is really cool that they would revisit one which starred puppets. Also, the Orphanage is the most amazing group of FX guys around (the SF division.) Many of these guys were hired to work on Episode I, and when the design of that film left them doing effects work they hated, they defected to the Orphanage. I saw a presentation by these guys at the SF film fest last year and they blew my mind. These guys just need a big canvas to draw on, and maybe this will be it. Combine that with practical effect puppetts, and you've got a movie I am dying to see.

Early reviews (2 years from now?!) will have a large influence on whether I deem this one ticket-worthy, or just a stoned rental. This could be wonderful, and yet could go so wrong. Just a strange choice... feels more like somebody devoid of imagination needed to pitch a puppet movie (hot right now, just think 'Team America', 'Strings', 'Elmo's World-Food, Water & Exercise'...) and had to go back to the vault for brain cells than someone going "Hey, what fantasy movie has had the public screaming for a sequel for years?..." Still, the first 'Dark Crystal' had me completely transfixed, if a little bored, when I saw it as a kid. Dark, beautiful, simple-but-not-condescending, and, of course, great puppetry.

I think there's a certain, specific demographic that really this film plays the best to. Beyond that, I just don't know what happened. I've talked to people, both older and younger than myself, about this film and most are decidely lukewarm or just don't have much appreciation for it. I was almost 5 when TDK came out and I remember being scared as crap by the trailer in the theater (shown in front of ET, no less). But really enjoyed the movie once I saw it. I'm sure there's nostalgia jading my perception of the movie, but the fact remains that I, and many others enjoy the original film. I just wonder if there's anough of us out there to make this new film worth making....

I'm not certain it's Venom, it's a human face, and I'm not exactly sure it's Tophers. There is a reflection that resembles Venom in the eye lens, so it would be a bit redundant to have him in the clouds. Although there are two white patches above the eyes that might be a retracting symbiote. It could be Sandman though. Who knows? All I do know is, there is somethin there. DARK CRYSTAL... WOOOOOO!!!

I am so happy that the have the Brian Froud on board. I am also impressed that they will be using puppets and not jumping on the CGI band wagon. At San Diego Comic Con they said that there would be some CGI. The original film was so dark, different and didn't answer everyones questions. I like it for that fact. To many films now a days have to name every detail to death (like people can't add 2 and 2) and would rather work on special effects thinking we're all to dumb to want a good story! I am a bit concerned about the story. I hope that Jim Henson's daughter will not let too many exectives sink this ship. That it keeps the heart of exploration and imagination. I also am excited for the prequal animated series.
This seems good for now.

wolack22 people like you are the reason Disney stopped making decent animation for rubbish CGI. Puppets can be good look at Farscape, and those were the same company who are doing this. So far I have not heard any thing to say this will be other than good and as long as that continues I'll be happy.

I am absolutely the biggest Dark Crystal fan I have ever known (and that's saying something), so for a sequel to hit on the 25th anniversary is wonderful news. However, the plot sounds terrible, doesn't it? I hope this "news" article is indeed a photoshopped fake, but I have heard echoes of this plot before, so even if it IS fake, the worst part (the plot) is probably real. I mean, it sounds like it's undoing everything from the original to nearly Highlander-esque proportions! The crystal was healed, so how can they get a shard again? Why would they let anyone NEAR the damned thing? And, the Skesis and Mystics reappear? WTF? The original film was a masterpiece of imagination. Bringing back the Skesis and Mystics smacks of desperation and marketing. I have met and spoken at length with Brian Froud--I KNOW he can come up with really cool, ORIGINAL creatures that don't unmake the triumph of the original quest. This sounds like studio bullshit: "Everyone loved the Skesis and Mystics (who are really supposed to be called "Uru", by the way), so we have to have them here, even if it makes no sense". Sounds like style over substance. Marketing over imagination. Well, ya know something you studio dickheads? Nobody knew about Skesis and Mystics the first time around, and everyone grew to love them anyway. Make some NEW creatures, preserve the original film quest's victory, and people will grow to love the new creatures as well. But then, I'm probably pissing in the wind. I had high hopes for this when I first heard about it, but now I'm getting really, really worried.
First plot sucked.

POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL plot points (*SPOILERS*)
by Joseph Merrick
Jun 15th, 2006
03:35:27 PM
From Dark Horizons(http://tinyurl.com/do n6g), although very similar information appeared on many sites 'round the time of the film's announcement last year: The Power of the Dark Crystal (working title), sees Jen and Kira (the original film's heroes) as King and Queen and guardians of the Crystal who fight to save their kingdom when the Crystal is once again split. When Jen and Kira welcome a fiery and unexpected visitor to their castle they learn that the very existence of the U-mun people, who live in the searing heat of the centre of the earth, is threatened by the death of their sun. There is apparently only one thing powerful enough to heal the ailing star - a shard of the Crystal. The Gelflings flatly refuse the request for a fragment and the desperate visitor takes matters into her own hands and steals one, making a hasty escape through tunnels deep in the bowels of the castle. So begins an adventure that will see love and goodness triumph over evil and re-introduce cinema-goers to a host of indelible characters including the mystic Ur-sol, Aughra the one-eyed seer, the evil Skeksis and their crab-like and violent Garthim foot soldiers.

What the hell fantasy fandom have you lot been living in for the last twenty-some odd years? The Dark Crystal was a staple of video for any child of the '80s or those with younger siblings at the time. My little sister watched that movie so often it made me sick! It wasn't a bad movie though, no more tha the Secret of Nimh or Labyrinth which she also watched to death. it was actually quite inventive for it's time. Yet you bitches have the nerve to hold Tron and, good lord, fucking KRULL up as worthy geek shit?! Geez, that's more hopeless than die hard fans of Altman's Popeye! Like any good bad '80s romp, the Dark Crystal is not beneath anyone coming to this site to post.

People can still condense the plot to "go to augras house, then go to the dark crystal, fix it, the end" ... unbelievable. People, it's the same story with the same mythological imperative: making the evil and good join to create a whole ... it's about restoring the balance. The difference is because it's a kid's movie they need to make Neo a non-mystic (i.e. he can't rejoin with a Smith/Skesis). Hasn't anyone been paying attention?

Yeah it should star Connelly and Bowie. With the FX seen in X3, they coud make Bowie look just as young as he was back in 85. Terry Jones writing the script would be a must, but I think the biggest thing would be to keep everything as practical as can be as in no CG puppets.

How often do you see this amount of talented names attached to a sequel? The story sounds really good, I can't think of a better storyline that they could go with. The original was great except for the naked puppet at the beginning and the obvious similarities to Lord of the Rings.

Y'know, I just can't believe that there's so many of you that don't like The Dark Crystal. Make's me feel kinda sad y'know? (sigh) The work of Jim Henson ( along with Harryhausen) had such an incredible impact upon me when I was young, and it still does today. For me The Dark Crystal was his crowning glory. Henson along with his team created a film that is well, to put it simply, special. As a creative person myself, The Dark Crystal strikes a cord deep inside me every time I watch it. This film was such an immense achievement and is a breathtaking experience to watch. Those of you who say you found it boring, BORING?????, well you just don't get it, and I feel sorry for you. Now, as for a sequel... An all CGI sequel? (shakes head) so sad... Personally I would love to see Henson's work with Brian Froud on creating a new world with new characters all realised through builing minature sets and puppets, ahhhhh beautiful puppets, and not a bit of CGI in sight... But not a sequel. The Dark Crystal should be left as it is. I must admit to being curious about The Power of The Dark Crystal, but on the other hand Henson's just ain't the place it once was... I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Mr. Tartakovsky has been doing stellar work lately. We must all write, email, phone, or do whatever necessary to get Korgoth of Barbaria made into a full series. The pilot episode that aired last week was sheer genius!

yes, the plot in the matrix films is also fairly simple. the difference is the matrix films are filled with action. almost nothing happens in the dark crystal. for quite a considerable. period of time. watching it. you really begin to notice. the passage of time.

I spoke to Brian Froud at a signing for his stunning book in THE WORLD OF THE DARK CRYSTAL (the conceptual design from the original film) and he said POTDC wasn't happening, that he'd fallen out with the director over a puppet/CG debate. If this DOES happen, it'll happen without the artist who created it in the first place. Check out the book and remember the first movie. It's better than any lame cash-in sequel will ever be.

I don't think they are forgetting the ending of the first movie. Remember, when the Crystal was shattered, it made the Skesis and Mystics... so it follows that if the fire girl breaks the crystal to get a shard... then the beings of crystal would split into the skesis and mystics again.

HUGE GEEK RANT - You've been forewarned. :-) The prologue narration of "The Dark Crystal" and the closing words of the urSkek at the end of the film might *seem* to imply that the Skeksis and urRu (Mystics) appeared as a consequence of the Crystal cracking. But that is not the case. Henson had actually produced a rich, complex mythology, wherin the urSkeks, seeking to purge themselves of evil, entered the crystal in an attempt to harness its power to purify themselves. The experiment failed. They wound up split into two. It was a newly created Skeksis that actually cracked the Crystal! Take note: FIRST came the splitting of the races, THEN the Crystal cracked. Jen actually sees a vision of this scene in the finished film, while staring into the Shard. ALL of the rich literature produced around the film -- such as the novelization and the "World of the Dark Crystal" text -- affirm this story. The original version of the screenplay was more lengthy and explicit on this point, but the basic premise remains: the urSkeks were not *victims* of the Crystal being cracked, they perpetrated division upon theirselves, and the Crystal was the casualty. The idea that they will inevitably split in two again every time the Crystal is cracked is nonsensical to Henson's mythology. Perhaps the developers of this new film assumed that that urSkeks are somehow permanently tied to the crystal, or live inside it. Again, this was not Henson's mythology (which has the urSkeks as visitors -- exiles, actually -- from another planet/dimension who travelled through the Crystal like a portal), and it is not supported by the film (in which, after entering the Crystal, we see the spirits of the urSkeks fly up, through the beam, into the sky). Ultimately, I see this move as a blatant plot device to resurrect popular characters -- in my opinion at the expense of their integrity. If they wanted to do a story involving the Skeksis/Mystics, there was easily enough backstory for a prequel (ill-advised as that may have been). In fact, given Henson's enormously rich and imaginative world-building on this project, it seems insulting to his memory to fall back on a retread of old concepts. I have every confidence in Tartakovsky, but between this news and the admission that the film will be CGI-enhanced (they can't afford to build a whole world from scratch this time around) I fear the only thing to look forward to is the possibility of another excellent Trevor Jones score. At this point, I'd almost be relieved if "henry bile's" doomsaying turns out to be correct.
Oops we forgot to use a production designer...

THIS LOOKS SO FAKE...The ears are the wrong shape. Kira doesn't look at all like she did in the press release drawing. THERE ARE NO DETAILS. Now come on. If this flyer was real it would showcase some of the terrific production design that is going into this movie. Just like the original promotional art work that came with the press release. The details are terribly fudged over Jen doesn't even have a real collar to his shirt, Kira isn't wearing a dress she is wearing some kind of haze and a plain badly drawn on ringlet (unlike the cowl with detailed head piece she was wearing in the promotional art work), and the fire girl is just a gelfling with its head on fire. If they arn't going to bother putting any sort of effort into this movie -and with someone like Genndy on board you know this isn't the case- then they shouldn't do it at all. I don't think that though. This picture is just fake. FAKE FAKE FAKE.

Actually it's real. It's from an official brochure about the whole DC line (animated series, mangas, sequel movie). IMO these are just early prototype puppets.
