On The Road

from the title on the home page, I thought that this piece would be about a film adaptation of Kerouac's "On The Road." I heard, almost 3 or 4 years ago, that Oliver Stone was going to direct it and that Brad Pitt and Sean Penn would play the leads -- I never heard anything about it since. Does anyone out there know anything about this project? Is it still going to be made? Was it ever? Any info will be greatly appreciated. --Dave

Beatniks rule! Anyway, The last I heard was that Coppola was indeed filming it, but this was in April of 95. Hopefully he is moving ahead with it still. (I have the lingering feeling that I saw it mentioned again more recently somewhere....)

Alright Dave buddy, I just went to check after posting the above message. It is currently in preproduction!, IS directed by Coppola, starring Tom Hanks as Kerouac, Tom Cruise as Ginsberg, Sylvester Stallone as Burroughs, and Sandra Bullock as Neal Cassady! Here is the address for more information: http://www.c3f.com/holywood/on theroa.html

Last time Harry was on the road, we got an unfinished piece detailing his panels at Dragoncon in Atlanta. Will we ever get to read part two to that story? I wanted more info on Harlan Ellison and Ray Bradbury.

Man, I hated that. I got all excited about there being a movie and then this cat sends some bullshit link. What's that about man? They should make a movie... but shouldn't follow that bogus lineup.

I am so sorry!! In my haste to find out about the movie, I just quickly read the tagline with intents to visit it later. If I had not been so afraid of someone posting before me, I could have checked. I thought that line-up of actors sounded a little suspect....but with a movie based on a novel as important as that, it seems that would be in order to bring that kind of talent to it. At least the Coppola part supports what I had read in '95. Sorry!

The only place I've seen anything about a film of On the Road was on a FANTASTIC website about the Beats, http://www.litkicks.com The website's author went to an open casting call a few years ago, held by Coppola and Allen Ginsberg. Now, I've written Harry a few times to try and persuade him to get some info for us, but he's been blowing me off. And speaking of Beat flicks, anyone seen that movie where Keanu Reeves plays Neal Cassidy?

There is much more news out there than just Episode 1 and Lord of the Rings. How about some news from the most top-secret movie filming right now, Freddy vs. Jason!! Father Geek, when you talk to Harry, ask him to bring us a word or two about this movie. To me, Freddy vs. Jason is the second MUST-SEE event film of 1999!!

Sorry, but I don't think a movie of On The Road would work. I read the book a while ago, and loved it. But it's too episodic for a movie. I mean, all it's really about is a few guys going on several journeys around america. I'm not trying to be condescending - it's a great novel and one of my all-time favourites. But a feature film. No. It would make a better mini-series. Oh, and in reference to a previous post, the Keanu Reeves Kerouac movie was called "The Last Time I Committed Suicide", and is well worth a look.

Why do some people read this site and then slag Harry for cashing in with trips and other fun stuff? Seems to me that these people are utterly jealous that Harry is moving about in a world that they want for themselves. Instead of criticizing the guy (this IS just a Web site, after all -- he doesn't hold elected office), restrain yourselves and discuss the movies, not Harry's personal foibles. Which is not to say that Harry doesn't have a responsibility to his readers to have some integrity; just that I'm fed up with all the bile. Movin' on...

While that website was pretty funny (not as funny as all of you folks who wrote in without noticing that Sandra Bullock was slated to play Neal Cassady) - it is also frightenigly true. I read "On the Road," seven or eight years ago and loved it. However, there really isn't much that "happens" in the novel from a Hollywood perspective - not enough plot twists. You just know the suits would try to implant a car chase, a love story, and maybe some corrupt cops to beef up the plot. IN the end, the spirit of the story would be destroyed. Some things are better left alone.
