It annoys me when The Simpsons writers act as though Family Guy stole their format. Surely the Simpsons just copied every sit-com cliche going (fat, stupid husband, bratish kids, long suffering wife). I could name a million (or at least ten) sit-coms that follow that formula. They weren't even the first to animate it. The Flintstones beat them to it by 20 years. There was even a 70's cartoon I seem to remember called 'Wait Till Your Father Gets Home'.

so who the hell cares if it was just used to fill episode time? My roommates and i were saying that for weeks after that episode and it was funny. Hell, every episode of Family Guy has some good lines that you can't help but repeat for hilarity factor when your a little less than sober. It's great! Simpsons used to be the best, but Family Guy has trumped it. That being said though, i have really gotten tired of seeing the reruns a million times. Lately, i am enjoying watchin the reruns of Futurama a lot more than any of these others. As far as the Simpsons goes, i think all the creative energy that once belonged to them was channelled into Futurama because that show is amazing. I am so glad they are getting a whole new season! And i agree that South Park is a totally different kind of humor, i dont think it's fair to compare them to Family Guy. I love them both equally, and in different ways ;p

Several reports claim Isaac hayes still hasn't fully recovered his memory or power of speech folowing his January stroke. he's improving, but slowly. Or maybe not, all I knows is what I reads on the internets. *** But when Simpsons fans call Family guy a rip-off, they're not talking about the format, because the Simpsons wasn't the first show with a fat guy, hot wife, son, daughter, baby and pet and Family Guy certainly won't be the last. No, the Family Guy Simpsons rip-offs were specific plots (again, many of which are standard sit-com cliches - just the Simpsons parodied them first and usually better) and jokes. Nothing underlines that better than the Family Guy opening credit sequence; an All In The Family parody segueing into a Vegas Revue musical number - both of which the Simpsons did as opening credits gags first. And way back 17 years ago when no one ever heard a cartoon character say hell or damn or discuss sex, The Simpson broke tons of taboos and regularly raised the bar for things you never expected to see on a cartoon show. Now people think they lost their edge because they reached a level they don't want to pass while Family Guy and South Park keep pushing the level of vulgarity, blasphemy and poor taste to see how far they can go. With Family guy it was the Jew episode that got them canceled the first time, with South Park it was the Bloody Mary episode that Comedy Central backed down over and promised not to rerun. The Simpsons, with their annual Christmas episodes, would never stoop so low, so help me Jebus.

They actually stole from "The Critic". The Simpson's is a classic show. I get upset when they (Simpson's Writers) start bitching about FG when again the show they have produced since I was in the 3rd grad is A CLASSIC. Sure the quality and rhythm is off now. And I can see they now have out of nowhere jokes like FG. But again FG didn't steal their format. The quick sight gags used on Family Guy were on "The Critic" 1st. Even "Arrested Development" had the same format. So they stole from The Simpson's too? "COME ON!" But It doesn't matter. Family Guy is a funny show despite what haters think. And SP has no business making fun of them because South Park is only sometimes funny. And on top of that, that's only the 1st time you watch an episode of SP. Upon repeat viewing's, their new episodes don't hold up once the initial shock is gone. Being shocking is not being funny. And they shock more than entertain. Family Guy is not always hilarious, but tell me that you didn't rewind your DVR when Peter was forced to perform the song "Milkshake" in prison.

Scenes that flash back to something silly. "The Critic" is the one cartoon I remember doing that often (Easter Island students with the big heads, "I own you! You're Mine! NO WIRE HANGERS!" "This is a test of Faye Dunaway's Vocal Chords- Waaaaaail!"), even more than "The Simpson's" did. The Simpson's was mainly straight story with funny shit happening. It's awesome that lines have to be drawn in the sand and one must choose one show then forsake all others. I watch all three and laugh at all three. I think South Park does things that SNL wishes they could do. I think the Simpsons (through season 6) has multiple layers of humor that have to be picked at. I find that when I watch the Family Guy though, I have more thoughts like "Yeah, I saw revenge of the nerds." It's more about the show winking and the audience getting references...which is fine. I take solace in knowing that I wasn't the only one who completely soaked up bad 80's pop-culture. I do think that it's awesome that the show shells out all the money for music clearances, that crap has to cost them quite a bit. But I'm of the mind set where I laugh more at things like ATHF, Sealab 2021 and Harvey Birdman. I'm kinda screwed in the head that way.

1. Simpson's is classic, a bit past its prime (I'll let you determine the length of a bit), and still worthy of a chuckle here and there; 2. Family Guy has never passed itself off as anything but ribald wit mixed with tasteless humor. 3. South Park has moments of hilarity that are truly fantastic (the Lord of the Rings videotape episode should be a Criterion release in and of itself) and moments of stupidity not worth being seen by human eyes again (a talking piece of feces as a character is sub-sophmoric, and, frankly, just plain disgusting). 4. Matt Groening isn't going to let his cash cow go without beating it into bloody, exhausted, emaciated death and beyond; 5. Seth McFarlane has a skewed hit-or-miss comedic style that leaves him looking like either a comedic genius, or the most unfunny bastard since Ray-Jay Johnson (see? stole that from Simpsons = classic); 6. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are pretentious fucks who enjoy dishing out criticism, attacks, and insults and cannot take even the slightest little bit of it in return without behaving as if they had been called some combination of a racist slur and an Anti-Semetic sentiment. It's a couple of things, not least of which was referenced earlier by another TBer. It's become patently obvious that the show has become little more than a series of vignettes stitched together by the barest framework of a plot. Whereas older FG episodes tended to hang their plot on classic rehashed sitcom formulae (Peter gets a new job, Peter's boss comes home for dinner, Peter and his estranged dad have a reconciliation), newer episodes have nothing resembling a plot whatsoever. I'm not saying I don't laugh occasionally, because I do -- but the lack of a cohesive plot structure IS pretty glaring, and on the whole takes away from each episode. Seth should watch more of his other baby, American Dad, and script accordingly. Every FG character has become little more than their patented "catch-phrase" and that's disappointing to me.

As for Family Guy not being as dated as South Park, well that depends. Is Star Wars better than LOTR, is Arrested Development better than Sons and Daughters, is CSI better than CSI: Miami. When did it become impossible to like both (except for the CSI part - just not my cup of tea)? When did that happen? Did I just not get the fanboy memo? I think both shows do great work and thought the Simpsons have fallen off in the past few years the first 10 years contained episodes that would, by any standard, be considered classic television. South Park has also contained it's fair share of duds to date but also included some really classic episodes. Family has not returned to the levels it had attained pre-hiatus but it also has it's fair share of great gags (and that is what it is a gag sitcom). McFarlane just needs to work on putting a whole episode together that works (I blame American dad for spreding him too thin - you're not David E. Kelley, Seth cut American Dad loose - the characters just aren't interesting or funny).

I dont think Groening likes the satrical humour of south park or Family guy. There is none of family guys/south park style in Futurama at all and I have seen alot of that. There is one simple reason - they aren't worked into the show at all. It's just a carbon copy of Rock Lobster, Take on Me, or The Blues Bros. Meanwhile a show like The Simpsons takes a reference like.. Full Metal jacket, and changes all the symbols and characters around to work it into the episode's plot so that someone who hasn't seen the movie isn't distracted; and those who have get the wink. Parody isn't "HAY REMEMBER THIS!?" it's subtlety and/or getting creative with the source material.

South Park doesn't interest me as much, but whenever I do catch an episode, it is usually very funny...without the needless padding Family Guy does with it's SNL inspired jokes-that-go-on-for-too-long. South Park is not quite as witty as Family Guy, Family Guy not quite as direct or funny -- but when you take them on their own merits, they are equally enjoyable. One thing that is annoying about both Family Guy and South Park is this whole generation of fans who do not know where the references in Family Guy (or S.P.) come from and then credit that show for being brilliant, when they are aping someone else. Seriously. It's got the same impact. Certain bits are hilarious. Others aren't People won't remember whole episodes (and really don't now) but, rather, favorite "skits." And in that, I think it's a fantastic show. It's animated variety comedy rather than the live stuff (which hasn't been as consistently good lately). The best episodes of The Simpsons are remembered as episodes (Bart's Crush on his Babysitter being my personal favorite and packing the most punch per minute of any non-Halloween eppy in the series' entire run). South Park is much more like vintage Simpsons in that it's plot driven (lately the Simpsons seem to be floundering for a new, more Family Guy-like scattershot formula, but they just don't do it as well...possibly because they won't go for the easy gross out or shock moment when one is needed). South Park's problem is that it tends to think too much of its own potential power and influence. Early seasons used the "moral of the story" jokingly, almost as an excuse for the sheer absurdity that had come before. More recent seasons have taken that "we have to teach a lesson and make a point" bullshit way too seriously. The best episodes in recent seasons include the Scott Tenorman and Japanime Warriors episodes. Those were absurdly funny and pretty timeless, yet also succeeded in being far more relevant and insightful than any of their more "politically charged" shows. As for not liking Matt's and Trey's politics, they don't have any to speak of. They cherry pick issues and make fun of whoever seems to be making the least sense on those topics. And usually I will agree with the viewpoints being expressed by their cartoon counterparts (Stan and Kyle), but when the shows are more about those "hot button" issues than they are about making us laugh at the absurdities common to people of all political and religous persuasions, I just don't find them anywhere near as entertaining. I think both South Park and the Simpsons have kind of lost their way, the former trying to be more than it is and the latter trying to be less. So When I want a guaranteed laugh at something downright stupid funny, I'll usually watch Family Guy.

The difference between satire and parody. Simpsons, Futurama, South Park and sometimes King of the Hill are great satires, occasionally mixing parodies into the mix. All of those shows will also go for more emotional episodes, mixing darker emotions with their humor. Hell, they can be downright moving sometimes. Family Guy ... not so much. Family Guy is all about jokes, whether they work or not.

Family Guy is just a cartoon. Allow me to elaborate. Before "The Simpsons" stopped being consistantly awesome, which happened anywhere betweem 1998 and 2002, depending on who you ask, the show was really a true animated sitcom. It dealt with real issues, and family problems and concerns. Homer was stupid, but he was a truly fleshed out, lovable character. He loved his wife, and Marge's love for him made sense, because Homer tried. All of the kids were fleshed out as well. Family Guy, on the other hand, has always been just a cartoon. Peter and Lois as a couple never made sense, Peter is an unredeemable idiot, and their children are pretty much cardboard, especially since the show came back. The only one with any personality was Stewie, and the show still can't decide what, exactly, to do with him. The other kids are one-note jokes. Quagmire is a sexual deviant, etc, etc. There's no substance to the characters. Which is ok if all you do are "remember when" jokes. But even though I won't watch the Simpsons anymore because I find it too painful, Family Guy will never be what the Simpsons was, because they are fundamentally different shows. And if I could have back one season of classic-style 3-7th season Simpsons, I'd be a happy man. Because those shows STILL rock. Will Fmaily Guy references still be funny in 5 years? I doubt it.

It goes in phases. I haven't watched a complete South Park in 3 years, but started again with the Return Of Chef episode. I used to looo9ove The Simpsons, but just flip right past it these days. Family Guy is hit and miss. When it hits, it is the funniest shit on tv. When it misses, it really sucks. All the mentioned shows have had a very healthy run overall and will be in syndication for the rest of our lives. Family Guy is the newborn of the bunch with only 4 seasons so far. Anyone else catch the Peter and Lois cameos in Drawn Together a few weeks back? Same animation and actual character voices. Funny stuff.

Trey Parker is the premiere social satirist working in comedy today - he has a way of spinning all this shit to the highest degree of scathingly exposed hilarity. South Park isn't just funny now, it's important. I feel like it's the only comedy show actually saying something about the culture we live in. Topical, relevant, hilarious. The Kenny/Teri Schiavo episode that aired the night she passed away is a prime example of why South Park is important - it goes places with brains, balls and morals that Family Guy goes to simply to be edgy or crass. I like Family Guy (although it hasn't been the same since it's resurrection, and the "movie" proved mediocre) but South Park is the bees knees and is the best it's ever been.

I don't think there's been a single positive word in this thread about American Dad, so I'm going to weigh in. I have started to really like American Dad. Yes, the first few episodes were pretty weak, but I feel that the show has gotten better over time. It still hasn't reached FG or Simpsons levels--not by a longshot--but it has started having more and more funny moments (amazingly enough, Klaus has really stepped up --- his "DVD Commentary" shtick was hilarious). So I'm hoping it carries on, because I think it's starting to hit its stride. Also, I really want to see the continuing story of Roger's excrement.

When I see its innumerable references (without which the program would be virtually devoid of content) that mimic the source without any sort of creativity beyond the "novelty" of "hey, look, our characters are acting out a scene from this movie!", I wonder why I'm not simply watching the source again. For a simple telling example, compare the closing of that Family Guy episode where they escape from South America (a Raiders parody that seems to think it deserves credit simply because the writers have watched Raiders) with the opening of the brilliant "Bart's Friend Falls In Love." Light-years of difference.

I think the show sucks, but it only angers me because certain people talk about it as if it's the second coming or something. Some people in this talkback have made some great points about WHY it sucks, and I agree wholeheartedly. South Park is great because it is all about the characters. Seriously, with the collection of characters Matt and Trey have produced, they could make ANY plotline work. I also love that they are not afraid to shit all over liberal idiocy, and not always jump on the "bashing conservatives" bandwagon like everyone else. Family Guy is lame in every definition of the word, and the fact that anyone hails Seth "Hack" MacFarlane as genius is a crime against humanity. The guy is a lucky motherfucker with a stupid audience. Don't get me wrong, I fucking despise Family Guy. But your facts there are a little wrong. The comic strip you are referring to is Chris Ware's Acme Novelty Library, the absolutely brilliant comic book published by Fantagraphics for many years (and as of the last issue self-published by Ware). Stewie indeed looks like a very poorly drawn rendition of the character Jimmy Corrigan, Smartest Kid On Earth. But it's not fair to say that the character is copied, because it's not. Jimmy is sometimes portrayed as a child inventor, but is not evil or wacky or bent on world domination. And in fact, the vast majority of Jimmy Corrigan stories take place when he is a timid old man. When Family Guy was pretty new Chris Ware was quoted somewhere about it because he was upset that people thought his life's work was a ripoff of a shitty new cartoon on TV. However, I don't believe he ever sued anybody over it (I tried to look it up on Wikipedia but it's not loading right now). You're probably thinking of a lawsuit around the same time where one of McFarlane's professors was suing for allegedly naming the family after his family. I know it's not a big deal and that Stewie's design may in fact have been consciously copied from Jimmy Corrigan. But I hate to see the two lumped together because Acme Novelty Library is the opposite of Family Guy in pretty much every way possible. It's not about jokes or quips - most of the humor is because it's so sad that you have to laugh. It does not have pop culture references, unless you count allusions to '30s comic books and ragtime music. It takes its sweet time telling a story (the Jimmy Corrigan storyline spread out over about 7 or 8 years if I remember right). And most of all Ware is a fanatical perfectionist when it comes to artwork. The stories are filled with a ridiculous amount of detail and historical architecture, and most issues also come with cut-outs and instructions to build working mechanical models of Ware's own design. It's easy to see why Ware would be upset to be associated with a show designed by people who don't know how to draw. But I think you're doing the same thing by claiming that Stewie is so similar to Jimmy Corrigan.

I never liked Family Guy. This Simpsons is just a restaraunt in a good location at this point (i.e. it can continue successfully without trying). But South Park still makes me laugh out loud. If anything it gets better over time. When Chef died (impaled, dismembered, half-eatend, etc.) and the boys were all "Are you sure he's dead?" and the shit came exploding out of his ass, and Cartman said, "Yeah, he's dead." (referring to the Wal-Mart episode and his contention that a person shits themself at the moment of death). Well......... that was brilliant and shows balls. Stone and Parker have great big shiny fucking balls attached to their chins and they're not afraid to waggle them around. Fucking A.

Because I've laughed out loud at every episode at least once. But it's really not all that good. You could say that anything that gets you to laugh is funny no matter what, and I'd agree. But I would also point out that the jokes are recycled, they overuse the "repeat one line for five minutes" so much it makes me want to throw up, and their "commentary" (which luckily they don't try that often) is just plain terrible: basically them telling us repeatedly that anyone that believes in any religion in the world is an utter moron. It's gotten pretty annoying.

It's a funny show. It's neither better or worse than the Simpsons OR South Park. It's a completely different style of comedy. Simpsons is, if anything, is for the more brainy. South Park, while occasionally having something to say, is still basically dick and fart jokes (not to mention the novelty of kids cursing). So yeah, Family Guy IS constantly making pop culture references, but it does it well. The show never made itself out to be superior to either Simpsons or South Park. Hell, I'm sure Seth would admit that both shows were a heavy inspiration but that doesn't mean he ripped them off or set out to destroy them. All shows need to realize that animated prime time is hard enough as it is without taking each other down a peg or two.

...but none of these shows were the second coming of anything. Well, maybe Simpsons was the second coming of Flintstones and South Park was the second coming of Peanuts and Family Guy was the second coming of Wait 'til Your Father... but that's really not what someone above insinuated with his criticism of folks holding Family Guy in some sort of religous reverence. The only animated show I've ever seen anyone do that with is the Simpsons, back when I was in college, and those people were higher than a motherfuck most of every day, so I wouldn't exactly weight their tastes too heavily. What we're talking about here are three shows that were each, in their primes, very funny and consistently entertaining TV. Simpsons' prime lasted longer than South Park's, although neither of those shows really hit their strides until season 2. Family Guy was funny as hell out of the gate and decidedly different from the Simpsons at the time (on purpose...why would anyone think we needed two Simpsons?). And while it may have desensitized some viewers with constant bombardment, it hasn't changed its formula much. And it's got a pretty avid fan following of its own that will insist this first season back is as good as anything that came before it (I can't say that until the season's over and I get to tally up the jokes that worked against the ones that didn't on a per-episode basis....no shit, that's how I roll). What scares me are some of these people calling South Park important. If that's the point (and maybe it is, what with the complete lack of subtlety in addressing social and political issues that the show has embraced since the movie came out), then Matt and Trey might need to point their fickle fingers away from that bazd old hypocrite, Isaac Hayes, and right up each other's asses. Because after years of mocking celebrities (liberal AND conservative) with heavy-handed social and political agendas, they've apparently become what they despise. And how would that be any less hypocritical than what they're accusing Chef of? Personally I'd rather think thy're just getting creatively tired and can't come up with subtle ways of addressing socio-political issues anymore (like they did with the brilliant ending to "Good Times With Weapons"). One of the funniest recent episodes of South Park was the one where the boys freak out about the girls having a device that predicts the future. And that was pretty fucking low key, politically. Also included a Family Guy-esque rip on the pop-culturre touchstone Pet Semetary. Come to think of it, wasn't Die Hippie Die just a riff on The Core? Let's not look at our own favorite children too closely from this class, as we might find they're all in need of some special ed and/or disciplinary measures for plagiarizing each other's schticks.

Glad to see Boondocks getting some love in this Talkback. It is off to a stronger 1st season start than any of the animated shows above. At its best it is as hard-hitting as your average South Park. (Though nothing is as good right now as South Park at its best.) It's just that Boondocks is not getting nearly the attention it deserves. Anyone see last week's rapper's duel between "Ganstalicous" and "Eat Dirt"? Do yourself a favor and set your Tivo's now if you haven't seen it yet. Venture Brothers is much funnier to me as a former comic-book and Saturday morning cartoon junkie. In fact, a good chunk of Adult Swim appeals to me for the same reason, with Aqua Teen Hunger Force probably being the most consistently funny cartoon on the air since Sealab lost Captain Murphy and went off. Harvey Birdman is pretty good as well. Futurama took the slow ramp to funny, but once it got up to speed it was pretty hilarious. Glad to see that getting another shot in some format. And the thoroughly weird Perfect Hair Forever really started to grow on me. I'd watch new episodes of any of these shows over any new episodes of the Simpsons or South Park. Probably even Family Guy, depending on my mood.

I can't say I'm a fan of Aqua Teen. I put it in the same league as family guy. If you like it, fine. But i think it's a bunch of crap just thrown together. Honestly, the whole Williams Street clan struck gold with Space Ghost, and since then has repackaged the same program over and over (Aqua Teen, Sealab, Birdman). I can't see how they keep getting away with it. It took me nearly a year to warm to Venture Bros actually, because I was expecting to be burned like the rest of Adult Swim's "flash animation" style of cartooning (sans Boondocks). But I was put in my place and now have a Best Buy gift card stored away just for the VB dvd whenever that may come out.

Surely they knew coming into this episode that they shared a lot of the same audience as Family Guy. It even sounded like half of their staff watches the show from the sound of this episode. Why alienate a good chunk of your audience? And something else that got me was the ending with Comedy Central pussing out. Sure they deserve that slap in the face; but at the same time, do you really want to bite the hand that feeds you... or in this case, keeps you on the air? I just get the distinct feeling like Matt and Trey want to go out with a bang. And this may be the wind up to that moment.

Based on these talkbacks, I'm beginning to see why Family Guy is so popular. Some people just can't appreciate real, not cheap, character-based humor. I enjoy Family Guy, but I laughed my ass off at the fake FG clips. Great stuff. Also, the 'head in the sand bit' was great, because that's exactly what the American media did when they all refused to even show the Muhammed cartoons to see what all the fuss was about, and then they threw in shots at their own network for bowing to outside pressure. The person that said they're trying to end the show, I don't know if I'd go that far, but it's clear that they have 'fuck you money' at this point, and they're going to just keep pushing the envelope as far as they can. And I think it's 50/50 if they actually even intend to have a part 2. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that was just a throwaway gag at the end.

This is where the Simpsons went wrong (although they did it in the past with the gravestones of other animated shows): Number one should never mention number two, while number two should attack number one constantly (Coke never mentions Pepsi in its ads, and Bud rarely mentions Miller, and when it does, it's a serious misstep--Miller and Pepsi mention Bud and Coke constantly). Family guy has higher ratings than South Park (mostly because of the fact that SP is cable and FG is network), and therefore should just ignore it.

I like Family Guy for pure humor while South Park USED to have a message embedded within jokes. I don't care if they trash Family Guy as long as it's funny...but it wasn't. What the hell happened?!? These past shows have been kinda weak. The Chef episode was plain mean-spirited and the hybrid-car show had 1 joke (fart-smelling). I think the unfocused & unfunny Team America broke Trey & Matt. Perhaps there's some Butters episodes coming up that will save the season.

This was billed as a war between cartoons. I think that the major issue they were trying to address is, when the chips are down, most people will fold their values - like freedom of speech if actual violence is threatened. Tonight's episode of South Park is on it's way to concede, that Family Guy has every right to exist. Some of the SP gang like Family Guy, some don't. The point is that there is a particular segment of the population who will, when faced with the slightest bit of trouble, will forgoe their basic human rights - including freedom of speech. The show wasn't that funny. But, the issue of being able to draw cararictures of famous people is probably near and dear to the South Park creators. Parody is the essence to much of these animated shows that we all love. Lets go back to the subject matter that they are commenting on - that a cartoon of Muhammed caused certain people to lose their shit. I think that Southpark are the first people urging people to not be afraid. Even where I live, a newspaper decided to run the cartoons. They recieved huge critisism - but stood by their mandate to report the truth. I will get off my soapbox and relate one last item. When I was in Grade 8 I drew a awesome carraciture of my math teacher hitting a kid on the head with a ruler. He thought it was hilarious

And I'm certain this was covered up above somewhere - but you remember specific South Park episodes, while you only remember specific Family Guy jokes (then remember you heard those same jokes, or a form of them, five years ago on another show)...Family Guy makes me smile from time to time, but it's utterly disposable, as self referential as the Kill Bill movies...South Park - like The Simpsons or Futurama or any good animation on tv right now - works the episode around an idea, then riffs on that...South Park works in particular because those guys just DON'T GIVE A FUCK...Anyone that thinks they're getting preachy has obviously missed the couple dozen or so times they've made fun of themselves...Throwing everything at you including the kitchen sink (like Family Guy does) wears thin pretty quickly and eventually starts taking the audience for a bunch of fools - appealing to the lowest common denominator is funny (it's primal), but not 100% of the time...

The Simpsons took the first shot at Family Guy with "Send in the Clones" and the field of Homer clones that included the original design from the Ullman show and Peter Griffin. FG retaliated with a Police Squad credit sequence parody that ended with Stewie running over Homer in a Simpsons opening credit parody and Peter saying "Who the Hell is that?", like his son kills paople and they leave dead bodies in the garage all the time. The last show was on the Simpsons, when they looked through an Italian mug book of known criminals that identified Griffin as "El Plaigerismo" and Smith from Am Dad as "Plaigerismo de la Plaigerismo" - a copy of a copy. Hard to deny that. * Now South Park wants to play? As this talk back has mentioned, Family Guy swiped from "The Simpsons", "Wait Until Your Father Gets Home", "King Of the Hill", "Futurama", "The Critic". Stealing from multiple sources doesn't make it less derivitive. South Park is just jealous because Family Guy hasn;t stolen from them yet. And, yes, I still occasionally watch Family guy and some of the cut-away gags and topical references are funny. The two best cartoon shows of recent years are The Venture Brothers and The Boondocks, but that's just my opinion. I admit that you have to be an old Jonny Quest and Marvel Comics fan to 'get' The Ventures and I'm still not comfortable with the language on The Boondocks. It would be funnier if they used the N-word and just bleeped it every time, the way they did with the cursing on "Action". Religion was always treated as a side joke before - church was just there so they could make jokes about how boring it was. I just feel like I walked into a major riot over cartoons. Too weird. I really liked this episode. I think they were taking shots at Comedy Central over censorship but I don't think they were aiming at X incident or Y incident. It was about ALL of it. Same thing with Mohammed. Yeah, directly they were talking about the incident with the Mohammed cartoon but they were using that to sum up all the free speech stuff going on, about people just accepting not-so-free speech. That's the high level preachy stuff if having an opinion and really putting it out there is preachy. Now imagine if every day someone came up to Norman Lear (creator of All In The Family) and said, "You're show is just like Married With Children." Even if Norman Lear started out liking Married With Children for what it was, in about a month, he'd hate the hell out of it. Finally, if I may say, that was maybe the greatest Big Wheel chase scene ever. Except for maybe that one Mel Gibson did in that movie with that guy...

That said, THE SIMPSONS hasn't been trully great since the 90s. It's gotten till I'll only watch it if there's nothing else on. It's tired. There comes a point in any show when you just start repeating yourself. THE SIMPSONS is way past that. Even that said, it still funnier than most stuff on tv. I guess that's why it's still on. SOUTH PARK is conceptually the funniest animated sitcom. The main theme, the main idea per episode is hands down the funniest. There's no doubt it's a very clever show. And they get away with more than any other show. I guess they "push the envelope" better than anyone else. Although, there's that DRAWN TOGETHER show now. That's some pretty sick s*@$t right there. FAMILY GUY is the all around consistently funniest of the animated sitcoms. They have the most laugh out loud moments (just on strict humor and not gross out uncomfortable moments laugh because you don't know what else to do moments) than any of the other shows. FAMILY GUY is more about jokes and slapstick. The others are more situational. It's only logical that FG would get more laughs. Every scene is a gag following up a gag that leads to another gag. SP is like one big joke that builds momentum as you go. SIMPONS is a toned down combination of the two others. It was the mold that started it all. But like any classic it starts to survive just on its reputation alone after a while. You couldn't beat THE SIMPSONS and REN & STIMPY back in the day.

I realize they were making jokes about two parters in the episode, but this thing was left open-ended, there was not resolution, and for that reason I see them doing a second part. Also, if Family Guy does retalitate, it would not be seen for awhile. Not only does it take more time (than South Park's 1 week time) to do an episode, I think they probably have all the episodes for this season produced already, meaning it would air next year, when the entire thing would be presumably irrelevant.

All three shows have had their high points. Simpsons lost their chops around the 7th season. Losing Phil Hartman and introducing tons of unfunny characters (Cookie Kwan, Lindsey Nagle, Gil) for merch purposes. The writing has devolved into standard sitcom levels & I blame the new writers. FOX is just continuing a legacy. South Park had great social commentary with the film being the highpoint & episodes like Butters (OJ, The Ramseys, etc). But they lost something and I've noticed the episodes being stretched around 1 joke (the alien immigrants, the hippie-fest, the hybrid-car) without many yuks inbetween. Again I blame the writers. Have they changed? Family Guys has lots of yuks but you cannot overlook their social commentary which is more daring when you consider it's on a major network - FOX. They've had bits on Osama Bin Laden, terrorism, Bush's DWI, Gore, cigarette industry, 9-11, etc. (SP's Osama episode was a Warner Bros tribute.) So while it will seem dated down the road with constant pop culture references you cannot dismiss them as derivative. Simpsons is just another family sitcom. A funny animated one (no longer) but family sitcoms have been around since the '50's. I see the point SP is trying to make about censorship but this episode wasn't funny. Trashing FG could've been hilarious but it wasn't. I hope it picks up in the 2nd half. By the way, for social commentary Boondocks is amazing.

Maybe they're pissy because they've been the only game in town for so long and something to reach their level of popularity ticks 'em off. Still, I'll be damned if that the South Park parodies of Family Guy were full of ownage. They got the tone of it just right. "Have some Mr. T . . .TEA!" Thankfully, Family Guy isn't that bad, but it can be. I've heart Matt and Trey bitch about Family Guy in interviews and on commentary mini's, so Cartman's speech was basically pretty much bang on how they felt. Good episode, I'm gonna reccomend it to all my friends who think Family Guy is the be all and end all of animated comedy, just to enlighten 'em a little bit, and I can't wait for part 2.

Unfortunately Family Guy episodes take eight weeks in a Chinese animation camp to manufacture. By the time the writing committee formulates a response and it makes it to the off-shore animators and is turned around and ready to air, South Park will have lapped them ten times. That's one of the many beauties of South Park. They can sit down and turn out a fresh episode from zero to sixty and have it ready to air in a week's time. So the content is topical. Unheard of for an animated show. Unheard of for a live action show, except for SNL. Like I said before Stone and Parker have great big shiny fucking balls attached to their chins. I believe that the whole thing was drummed up by the three of them to once again slam Scientology, Comedy Central and the FCC. I also think that it was a swipe at the Simpsons for ragging on Family Guy. I'm I the only one who saw the end of the episode? Although timely, I think that the Mohammed cartoon was just a metaphor. I really refuse to believe that there is any bad blood between the two camps. It's way too obvious for both, especially since the Simpson's already did it.

been funny since Phil Hartman died. Not their fault, but the content is just below par and is plauged with constant celebrities to attract viewers. Family Guy came along and basically filled the void for an actual funny TV sitcom. Family Guy is twice as funny and cleaver then Simpsons will ever be now. And South Park just continues with the same gross out humor or constant fights between kids and senselessly makes fun of shit. It's funny occasionally, but after I saw the Paris Hilton episode, I could tell their writing was just progressivly turning into a 13 year old middle school hatefest. Family Guy is a much better show. The similarities between Simpsons and Family GUy are about the same as any other TV sitcom you see. Wise-cracking friends, sex humor, witty drug humor that's still PC enough to be aired, and the moral story at the end where the family comes together.

The Simpsons main problem is that they fell victim to a classic blunder from sitcoms in the 80's, youngest daughter becomes an "activist". See Fresh Prince, Faimily Ties etc. Every time they use an episode to jam Lisa's "pc thug" opinions down our throats. (veganism, animal rights, etc) I turn the channel, and far too many ep's of the Simpsons feature annoying little Lisa. Lisa is a comedy killer, and they need to take a clue from Family Guy and how they have used the character of Meg in the last season. The Simpsons was once great, one of the greatest shows on TV. But now it is tired, uninspired, and oh so preachy. The Simpsons is like that former sports star who hangs around as a medicore back up and wont retire. Its kinda sad really.

When they first came on the air, they were decried as lowest common denominator, youth corrupting, censor offending boors. Remember "Underachiever And Proud Of It"? That shit got me suspended from school. Eventually everyone realized that they were actually intelligent and subversive satires of pop culture. And they became accepted, and in the process went as far as they could into the shocking and controversial without lapsing into bad taste. Then South Park came along and blatantly crossed that line and dragged pop culture along with it. And then Fmaily Guy came along and scraped the very dregs of the bottom of the barrell. Don't get me wrong, they're all funny as hell in their own way. I'm just saying that the reason everyone says the Simpsons has "lost it" is because they can't compete on the same level of tastelessness as the newer shows. They found their medium and are apparently happy with it. No talking poo, no matricidal infant, and I guess no more respect. Except they did it all first, from potty mouthed fourth graders, to outrageously stylized cartoon violence, to brilliant pop culture and social satire.

The Simpsons is without a doubt the most succesful animated program ever made. The show is legendary and will live forever, but like any show, it has run its course. South Park was also brilliant (and at time just immature), but it peaked with the South Park Movie. Family guy is the current prime-time hit and is hilarious at times and spotty at times. The world is big enough for 3 cartoon shows. There are at least 2 "psychic detective" series out there as well as 3 CSI shows, 10 BAD sitcoms and 3 "Amazingly Dumb Assholes Getting Hurt" video shows. 3 cartoons is actually a welcome relief. And last night's episode was "kinda" funny. I await the Family Guy retribution. At least it will be well animated! Stewie should plot to wipe out South Park with a death ray. They could do a crossover episode and feature Matt and Trey getting beheaded by some radical Muslims who saw the Super Heroes episode.

Just the whirling thunderstorm that is known as Crash...now The Simpsons don't need to be thrown into this circle because it's like the old respected man who has had his time in the sun...in the past. No one can compare with the Simpsons cause they were the only ones doing it. Now they are weak and old, but still can be pretty fiesty. Let's leave those guys out of it. Family Guy and Crash supporters both think that the show and movie don't NEED to have anything to say, which continues to irritate both distractors. Both are enjoyable, in their own way, and the effort is genuine. But, both also have to stand up to the test of time and longevity. There they will both find out if they are true classics. The haters of both I know are waiting for that moment.

World-wide success! The Simpsons is one of the most popular shows in the WORLD. There is less subtle humour and more physical comedy because they have to appeal to a worldwide audience. I know this bugs some people and they'd rather see the show cancelled rather than "share" it, but it's still a damn entertaining show, and there's still lots of subtle laughs to reward you for paying attention. You may not like Homer getting gored in the crotch, but on the other side of the planet there might be people pissing themselves from laughter.

I consider South Park to have two seperate eras. The original era, where it was immensely popular with 6th graders (myself included) who wore "They Killed Kenny" t-shirts and whose parents forbid them to watch it. There wasn't REALLY any topical, biting humor, just random stupid references, like having an obsession with trying to kill Kathie Lee Gifford. Come to think about it, early South Park is more like current Family Guy. Anyways, after that formula got old, South Park began to mature and evolve, and that's when we got the movie. Bigger Longer and Uncut was the first time South Park got real mainstream media attention for being a biting, intelligent satire. Besides the fact that the movie is a fucking epic masterpiece (which the Simpsons writers should watch about a hundred times in order to see how to properly go from TV to cinema), it ushered in the new, satirical and political SP. Cartman stopped being an "BEEFCAKE! RESPECT MY AUTHORITAH!" catchphrase factory and became the conniving, manipulative mini Archie Bunker that he is today. I don't believe that the movie was the peak of the show, but rather the beginning of something entirely different.

...because at the end of the show I felt absolutely certain that in the second part of this episode we would see Mohammed. And the consensus here seems to be that the whole promise of a second part is a joke. Maybe it is. But if it is, this episode backed off in its clear purpose. Because the drive by comedic hit on Family Guy wasn't the point of this episode at all. Sorry. I know it seems like it was awful important to a lot of you talkbackers leading up to the show, but this episode addressed something a little more important. It addressed a fairly sizable portion of the Islamic world allowing themselves to be beaten into a violent frenzy over their inability to control the actions and limit the freedoms of people who do not share their faith. It also addressed the fact that serious debate took place in the western world over whether the correct response to this was to allow freedoms to be curtailed by the threat of violence. And to drive home their belief in this point the boys must show Mohammed. They must be willing to make the statement that where freedom of thought and expression, something as sacred in our pluralistic culture as their devotion to their prophet is in their's, enters the equation, we do not back down. Not one inch. Not ever. And there's really only one way to do that.

best part, IMHO. i think that is what Matt and Trey are best at; taking the childs eye view. They're also very good at social satire in terms of pop-stuff and/or relgion, but their political satire, on the other hand, is, more often than not, of the distincly Affluent Suburban White Frat Guy variety (read: clueless). oh, btw, I love all three shows -- THE SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY, and SOUTH PARK. But, to be objective, THE SIMPSONS has the most consistently good writing; even if they peaked years ago (sad, but true), I always find it entertaining. FAMILY GUY and SOUTH PARK are both hilarious, but their quality isn't nearly as consistent as THE SIMPSONS.

I hated it at first, and I especially hated all the middle-schoolers and dope feind college dorks who don't know any better saying it was better than THE SIMPSONS. Nothing in the history of man is better than THE SIMPSONS (aside from porn and women who swallow). But in it's own crass, empty, surface-level way I get laughs from it. Crass is the best word. SP is also crass but it has a conscience and a point of view. FG is "pop pop pop" joke after joke, 30% of them maybe work. It's immature and it's not really clever (talking novel-writing dog?? ), it's has no layers and it says nothing about our society and lives. It's just a laugh machine and I've decided that's ok. SIMPSONS is one of the great American satires. Even as spotty as it has been since 2000, it has a history and a relevence to it. It has history. In it's best moments it blows the fucking doors off FG, SP and everything else. I forgive it now because it has brought me so much joy in the past. This season has been an improvement, and I look forward to the movie. FUTURAMA, I think for the 4 seasons that were made, was funnier than THE SIMPSONS. It's one of the saddest situations ever. That sunday night block of SIMPSONS, FUTRAMA, and the woefully underrated KING OF THE HILL was class. If you had those 3 and topped it off with FG therewouldn't be a better night of TV. The 4 shows compliment each other and offer different things. KOH makes me like rednecks, and in real life I fucking hate rednecks. But KOH is so fucking good I understand them. All in all, all these shows are successful at their chosen formulas. FG is not and never will be better than SIMPSONS, SP or KOH but it doesn't seem to be trying to be better. It's just a 7th grader joke factory, and that isn't so bad.

You wanna know what hurts Family Guy more than anything? It's that they don't get that parodying something isn't lifting it directly from the source material and plopping it into an episode. It's the reason why shit like the Scary Movie series doesn't work-there's no art to it. There's no wink-wink, nudge-nudge. It's all "HERE IT IS, IN ALL IT'S GLORY! ROCK LOBSTER! PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME! GET IT!?". Whereas if you take The Simpsons (and to keep up with the movie thing, Scream), everything is very tongue and cheek, and you have to listen very carefully to get all the side-jokes. That's what makes it timeless- you can hear a joke that is funny, but you don't really get, and then see some old movie, then go back to the show and say "OOOHHHH!" and it becomes a million times funnier. There's just no cohesive nature to Family Guy anymore, which hurts the show in the long run. Me and my friend Colin used to quote entire episodes of Family Guy- now I'm lucky if I remember an episodes plot because it bounces from topic to topic so fast it's hard to keep track of everything. As for South Park, sometimes I just want a knee-slapping, laugh 'til you cry type of show that isn't so heavy on message that I feel like someone's trying to shove it down my throat. Both shows have their weaknesses, but I give it up a little bit more to South Park, just for being more original, though one must admit I like the one off shows that are about just plain bullshit nonsense then anything else.

I didn't think about it until your post. It's likely that the appeal of South Park, Family Guy & Simpsons is their commentary on current events - South Park the quickest to comment of all. With today's instant fix society, people like it when Stan & Kyle catch Saddam 5 days after the US did. No one cares a year later. just like no one watches Survivor re-runs. Topical content shows will increase on TV. When pop culture references bug me is in films, especially Disney. south park is a "biting, intelligent satire." "theres a satellite coming out of my butt." or "tom cruise get out of the closet." heheh thats so funny because..in this case the closet was literal and ppl might think tom cruise is a homosexual. hahah..he might be into bum sex snigger I dont particularly hate south park but family guy wipes the floor with it in terms of laughs. and both are as equally silly. But of course the simpsons rules all.

South Park and the Simpsons lost their luster years ago. South Park has worn out any shock value it had in the first 3 seasons and Simpson stopped being funny back in the mid 90's, there is no humor left in that series. Simpsons should have been cancelled instead of way better Futurama.

Seriously, it seems any show now on cable can just pile on the bi/lesbian/gay sex "humor" and be called "groundbreaking" or "pushing the envelope". Make it an animated show and it gets even more critical "creed". Drawn Together is hamfisted, vulgar fucking garbage. I'm all for envelope-pushing humor. I'm just a picky bastard who actually likes it to be, you know, funny. There is one animated show out there that earns its laughs every episode and its name is SOUTH PARK! Family Guy sucks donkey cocks too.
