I first heard the comment from Elvis Costello, and what he really said was, "WRITING about music is like dancing about architecture."
Dancing about inarticulate dumbasses

Can't say how tired I am of hearing this quote, invariably from pompous-@$$holez who probably can't do that well at either. Laurie probably isn't the originator, but if she is, then she's lost some respect in my eyes. ALL ART is about communicating impressions from one sense to another--otherwise how can you have a haiku about a sunrise. Pinheads ought to know better, but their usually trying to cover up for their own fatuous "talent".

WHat I recall is hearing Laurie Anderson quoting Steve Martin as saying that. Not sure if it was talking or writing. My thought is that it was probably a passing witticism, and the originator didn't intend it as a critique of all musical discussion. Who knows, he/she may have actually been suggesting an interpretive dance series of the works of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Being Articulate

Mike Horne, if you are going to blast others for being inarticulate, you should really know the difference between "their" and "they're". As it is, you come off sounding like the idiot.

No, really. What is the point when the criticism is coming from people who name themselves 'Lord God Almighty' and 'Skeletor'? There's absolutely nothing wrong with being the Devil's advocate, but why glorify yourselves with anonymity and self-gratifying handles? Leave people alone. You might find they're interested in what you have to say. Having to hear it from someone who thinks they're special enough to be a God...What pompous nerve that is!

Actually, I think the quote is really Frank Zappa's...and I can't get enough of it. I am reminded of it every time I read a record review and still can't tell, after the review, what the heck the album sounds like.

On one of Laurie Anderson's recordings ("United States?") she used the quote and attributed it to Steve Martin. That much I'm sure of. I thought the original quote was "Talking about COMEDY is like..." but I could be mistaken.

Despite the smart-qaleck comments inspired by the title, this sounds like a good movie. I take these reviews, like I take all reviews, with a grain of salt. But because this site brings together people who know and love movies, I always come here first.

I can tell you a little about Willard Carroll's film making history. I used to work with/for him at his co-owned animation studio, Hyperion Animation. He has mostly written for animation, and since he has his own studio, he pretty much had no problem getting a production started for each of his scripts, no matter how bad they may have been...and most of them were pretty bad! Although the original "Brave Little Toaster" was somewhat successful, its two sequels, "BLT Goes to Mars" and "BLT Goes to School", were horrible stories...both written and produced by Carroll. "The Oz Kids", a series of direct-to-video animated shorts, were just painful to watch, also written by Carroll. The only script of his that I thought was decent (actually, it was surprisingly good), was "The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina". Hyperion has just put this one into production. All of the designs are complete and they are now entering the storyboard phase. The only other experience (that I know of) Carroll has in live-action is his directorial debute on "Runestone". I have actually never seen this so it wouldn't be fair to comment but... It is rumored to be pretty bad. He did direct another live-action film right before "Dancing" called "Tom's Midnight Garden" but I haven't heard much about it. This one starred Gretta Scachii (spelling?) and Joan Plowright (Carroll must know somebody important in the industry). His studio, Hyperion Animation, has actually produced some good shows. "Life with Louie" was created by Hyperion along with HBO's "Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child", "The Brave Little Toaster", "Bebe's Kids", "Rover Dangerfield", "1001 Arabian Nights/LA Philharmonic", and a yet to be released "Proud Family". That's if anybody is interested!
