Which, quite frankly, isn't a good thing. But I seriously hope they're pulling out all the stops. If only they could get Conan O'Brien to come back and shoot around some ideas. That or maybe David Mirkin is involved in some capacity. As long as they hit the right notes, avoid "current" satire and make the thing a classic... I'll be happy. I doubt it, though. ...is if Conan O'brien was somehow lured back to write the movie. His sense of humor is such a strong presence in seasons 2-4 that it becomes almost painfully obvious when he leaves. Here's hoping that somehow the movie can have the quality of a pre-season 8 episode.

That cleared up a lot. Good news. Swartzwelder and Ian Maxtone-Graham wrote some classics, plus it's always good to have Matt be the hands on guy for the movie. I just bought Season 7 DVD. Probably the best Simpsons season ever. Then, of course, there is season 8 with the Frank Grimes episode. hahaha. Let's hope they pull a great gag like in the second half of "Who Shot Mr. Burns" when Moe and everybody run to take down the sun blocker and they pull it down over the ledge and crushes a town. Skinner: "uhhh, what town was that?" "Shelbyville!" and then everyone cheers! hilarious!

The plot sounds like a typical episode of the show. It's really going to be a challenge to translate the Simpsons to a feature-length format. However, they do have Groening and some of the original writers on board. Sink or swim, at least they are giving it their best shot.

To all those who just won't shut about Conan O'brien, please bear in mind that the man worked on the Simpsons for a mere three years (91-93) and is credited as a writer on a mere FOUR EPISODES. Granted, those episodes are good ones, but not any better than the rest of the material from those seasons. Conan's influence in the Simpsons' world (by his own admission) has been vastly overstated by fans who seem to jump in response to a celebrity they recognize (as opposed to just some writer guy). So remember, everytime you pine for Conan's Simpsons, you're just exposing your lack of knowledge about the show.

Conan's humor was greatly appreciated within the writing room and was probably a blast to write with, but his impact on the show was pretty much only a few one-liners and gags. The 3-6 Simpsons were a team, not just one guy. Aslos, to the people who say "mirkin" should come back, he, along with most of the former show-runners, are always still contributing jokes and ideas to the series even today. Look at the credits.

Depends on who these "original" writers are. But so far the premise just sounds like any other episode of the Simpsons. How about making the premise something that warrants a whole 1.5 hour story dedicated to it. Something groudbreaking in the Simpson's world, like Bart turns 11 or something? It really doesn't matter what the premise is or what the plot is supposed to be, the first third of the movie will be about something totally different before a serious of errors leads to the start of the real plot. It'll probably start with Bart wanting to go see a movie that's rated R, and only after he destroys the movie theater and somehow drains the powerplant will Mr. Burns get the idea to enclose the town or some such craziness.

...I will not bash this movie in any way prior to its release. I've got a guy in my trusted circle of entertainment sources who is about as big a Simpsons fan as you can get, yet he will admit that the show hasn't really been consistently good in over seven years. He basically watches out of habit and enjoys the infrequent funny on a "pleasant surprise" level. Unlike me, he doesn't resent the show for overstaying its humor. So he's going to see this opening day and will tell me, based on what he knows of funny and what I find funny, whether it's worth my money or not. If only I'd had access to a similar test monkey back when the prequels came out. I probably never would've seen those movies. Anyway...here's hoping I get a good report on this. I could use a pleasant surprise.

The trouble with the simpsons is that when it first started they prided themselves on the fact that it was essentially a cartoon version of a normal sitcom. Whereby all the rules of reality applied. And they followed this for many many years, only deviating for the halloween episodes. Now though it seems that the new normal episodes are even wierder than the old halloween episodes. And thats the trouble the movie will face, that is whatever the storyline is it will have to be based in reality. South park never had this problem and could do anything they wanted

granted, he did contribute to some greatness for the middle years, he was, in the beginning not even a simpsons fan. It also has been under his watch that the show took a turn for the worse, but am I the only one that thinks the show isn't as good anymore not only because of the switch from timeless satire to more "sit-com style" humor, but because the animation is completely changed in certain characters... most notably homer and his facial expressions, they are just no where near as great or funny as they used to be. I've only watched a handful of Simpsons episodes in the last 7 years, yet I still feel compelled to bash it, because it assures me that I haven't missed anything. Also, I will continue to bash the movie, day after day after day, despite the fact it is just now being recorded. Being snarky does wonders for my self-esteem, and I'd rather spend 22 minutes making unfunny jokes about how the Simpsons sucks than watch a recent episode that's actually funny, like Million Dollar Abie. It may not be as great as it once was, but its been on for 16 friggin years and is still better than 95% of the shows on right now. Not to mention it is a gold standard classic show. And kudos to them not cashing in on a Movie when it was super hot. The South Park movie was great true, but Trey Parker and Matt Stone are also really talented guys. Try and think of another movie like that made when the show was that hot and think if it was any good. To all the people saying it should have come out 10-15 years ago... Really? You do realize that would have resulted in a FOX baby that would have been heavy on all their catchphrases and not the humor that took them years to refine. Cut them some slack!! If you have any Simpsons DVD, Toy, watch, shirt, Tivo Season pass, you have nothing to say except "Thanks for everything, I'll be there opening day."

It's been stated, but that was a PERFECT movie. It still remains to be one of the funniest movies I have seen. I beg that they do another one at some point. The Simpsons movie will do insanely well, but will probably just be average. In regard to the "new writer" that is helping to write it, it is probably Tim Long...In other news, is anyone aware of South Park's plot this Wednesday? Where it revolves all around "Family Guy".

As I see it, the biggest drawback to a Simpsons movie is that there just doesn't seem to be any reason to do one. There's no big, untold story that springs to mind, there's no obvious benefit to having 90 minutes to fill instead of 22 (or however long shows are these days), and there's nothing to be gained visually by an expanded budget (not that there won't be some nicer animation in places than we'd get on TV... just that it doesn't seem like much incentive to make it into a movie.) For those who say that all applied to the South Park movie, you're forgetting the one reason they did that movie: Less censorship. And having that as a reason, they rode that premise as far as they could conceivably take it to hilarious results. There's no way the Simpsons Movie will have anywhere near that kind of freedom... it's going to be made for a PG audience, PG-13 at most. Yes, it could still be good, many animated shows have had movie versions in the last few years that got good reviews (Spongebob and a slew of other Nick shows, for instance. If only Invader Zim had that chance... but I digress.) But I doubt that it's going to be anything especially memorable. If anything, it simply guarantees some upcoming self-referential jokes in the show about TV shows cashing in with needless movie versions...

I had read an interview with I think it was Matt Groening a while ago where he mentioned that they had like 5 scripts for movies that they were mulling over. 3 of them were 3-D. Now I assume they don't mean CG I think they mean 3-D. Now with Cameron doing his stuff in 3-D mayhaps this would be good testing ground? And there isn't anyone out there that wouldn't love to see a big-screen 3-D Homer Simpson. If there is they obviously hate fun.

Yes, it would be a gimmick, but that doesn't mean they couldn't have a lot of fun with it... And if 3-D really is the wave of the future (why does that sound familiar?), then there's certainly the possibility of them creating something fresh and memorable by being one of the first mainstream movies to fully utilize the newer technology. I doubt if the idea could carry a movie as much as "uncensored" carried the South Park flick, but it would definitely keep it from seeming like you were paying $10 for a few episodes back to back.

but I have always seen the similarities between South Park and Simpsons as skin deep. They're both really well written well thought out cartoons. But the Simpsons wouldn't necessarily benefit from less censorship. I think the only thing that they could really bring to the cinematic table would be the same innovation that they brought to television. I trust that they're smart enough to know that to and to know that they are above gimmicks or rampant cursing. But I also trust that they're smart enough to include a scene where Homer pisses Flanders off enough to curse a light blue streak. And I agree...I have yet to see any 3-D that isn't a headache after the "Hey thats kinda cool" factor wears off.

It was sorta widely reported about four or five years ago that in the Simpsons movie, the "time" of the show was going to be moved forward a few years so that all the characters would be slightly older. One of the things that was supposed to happen was Bart losing his virginity to an older woman in a scene reminiscent of "The Graduate". I dunno, just reposting that for what it's worth...

and has been for several years now. What was the last decent series of Simpsons? Season 9? Now the show is horrible, yes there is the odd decent joke in the show. But now every episode revolves around Homer getting a new job, or the Simpsons going to some exotic locale. It is just awful and tired. And with the writers of the show doing the movie i have no hope of it being any bit good. Yes there will be a couple of funny jokes, but it will just be a fucking crap movie. With the simpsons fading away and having jumped the shark years ago, FOX are only milking it for all its worth before they cancel the show.

The only way The Simpsons Movie will work is if Jack Bauer arrives in Springfield and CTU set up a base in the Kwik-E-Mart. They discover that Flanders's wife didn't really die, she faked her own death and has spent the last few years training with an American terrorist organization that has been secretly placing TNT in the power plant and they will detonate if their demands aren't met. Jack gives Homer an earpiece and sends him to work as normal and he has to confront......oh, fuck off all of you, this is going to suck no matter what. The South Park movie was great and came at exactly the right time.

Probably not, what haven't they done in the past dozen plus years that would make a good movie? Seems like the well has pretty much run dry on the show itself based on a few eps I've caught this season. Not to demean Simpsons, I own all the currently available seasons on DVD, but come on, what are they going to put on the big screen that would make you think, "Yeah, they really couldn't have done that on a TV budget!"

i dont think thats the actual plot. it seems like a plant to me. i mean they've done SEVERAL episodes like that: Homer almost kills everyone in the city, Homer does it again, and again. And it also sounds a lot like the episode "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" where Mr. Burns was controlling the sun. I hope this isnt right and if it is then i hope they make it hilarious.

In truth, "Spongebob" is the only other Nickelodeon cartoon I can name, as it's famous enough that I've heard of it. I only lament that it's deemed worthy of a movie version, where as something like "Zim", which is one of the few cartoons that could actually expand to fill a movie, is not. And, dude... You know who the President of Nickelodeon is? Why?
