Some of us have been lucky enough to live with this album for over a year now. Ben Folds deserves a medal. This is a long way from The Transformed Man thankfully and if you like this be sure to search for Ben Folds Five's track In Love. That's where this rebirth of Shatner truly began. Don't believe Harry? Read this. http://www.incendiarymag.com/m odules.php?name=News&file=arti cle&sid=218

Yes it is a version of Pulp's Common People. It's enough to frighten the life out of you. It's probably the worst track on the album, but more than worth a listen.

I liked it quite a bit, The Rollins track was the only one that I didn't really care for, didn't really bite on the faux-anger. And yea Harry, this is old old news, almost two years old no? Maybe not quite that old, but getting there, though you can go even further back to Fold's Fear of Pop with Shatner doing a great song on that album, "In Love" we're (sidenote, though I like Ben Folds, other than that song that was a pretty terrible album). And its not like this was some underground little album, Shatner gave it the full promotional push, Stern, Letterman, Conan, it even got decent radio play in some areas, but I won't go on, the article says its old news so no need for me to harp. Just surprising this hasn't come across Harry's desk until now.

It's a great 'story song' with Aimee Mann and Ben Folds... we don't get enough story songs these days. And Shatner narrates it, with enough conviction taht you really believe he's got a couple of estranged daughters and an affinity for 'Cold Mountain.' Listen and understand.

If you liked this, you should check out the album: "64-95" by Lemon Jelly (who collaborate with Shatner on the track "Together") as he provides the vocals for the last track on their album (available on CD & DVD) called "Go" which is even better than most of the tracks on "Has Been".

As someone who can't listen to Shatner's version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" or "Mr. Tamborine Man" (even for comic relief...too damn painful), I have to say that this album was amazing. You really can't imagine it unless you hear it. It came out in October of 2004. Never listened to much Ben Folds before (other than hearing "Brick"), but he's definately the genius behind it. It is 100% musically valid and not a novelty project. Yes Shatner can't sing, but I swear that doesn't detract from it one bit. His reading of the material is just about perfect. There is humor in the album, but it's not a comedy record. I actually think that the title track "Has Been" is the weakest on the CD (though it's funny). It's the one that comes closest to parody with it's "Ghost Riders in the Sky" faux western riff. People with closed minds or who can't get past the concept will never like it, but it really deserves a listen.

I don't understand all the negative posts. Does it make you feel better about yourself if you say you knew about this album 2 years ago? Does it discount an album with staying power? Maybe it is just an extension of the "me first" mentality. Nice review Harry, thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Harry! I've been pushing this album to friends, family, and anyone I could accost on the street for months now... My friend forced me to listen to it, and I feel like my aural assault on other people is just my way of paying it forward. This album is SPECTACULAR - a fantastically bizarre collaboration between Shatner and Ben Folds (of "Ben Folds Five" fame) that sat in my car's CD player for weeks on end. "Common People" - it's rare to find a great "rage" song these days that doesn't use ear-bleeding speed guitar riffs, but this one accomplishes the task beautifully. "What Have You Done" - Dealing with the tragic loss of his wife, this "song" (it's really more of a freestyle poem - it's the only track on the album without music) shook me. I mean, REALLY shook me - it made me realize that I haven't lived long enough on this planet yet to have the kind of cojones Bill has to absolutely expose his deepest, most frighteningly painful moment to the world. "You'll Have Time" - A hysterical look at getting the most out of life from a guy who's done just that. Seriously, folks - buy this album! In the meantime, I've gotta go and force another record store employee to play this album over the store's sound system (yes, I HAVE actually done that - I dig this album just that much!). "Live life... Live life like you're gonna die. Because you're gonna. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you... are gonna die."

I'm sure "Has Been" is fantastic, but do all of yourselves a favor and secure yourself a copy of Shatner's "The Transformed Man." It is quite possibly the most entertaining CD I've ever stumbled upon. The man does a recitation of Hamlet's Soliloquy. As you well know, that's worth the price of admission alone.

Harry, I just looked at your MySpace page. You've put up a song file of Sinatra singing "It Was a Very Good Year." Surely you know that Shatner does a version of that one too. I love Shatner, always having fun with his career while making his fans happy. Out of curiousity anyone heard MC Lars album The Graduate. He's a 22 year old kid that makes most of is music on his laptop, and he actually tours Europe and the States with his laptop. He calls the album Post Punk Laptop Rap. LOL. Anyway I figured most people here would appriciate his sci fi song where HAL from 2001 has a guitar solo. And the pirates out there will dig Download This Song. Sorry for the tangent, now back to all things Shatner.

Common People
by xeeds
Feb 22nd, 2006
01:44:43 PM
Common People is not only the best song on the CD, it is probably the best single released in 2004. I can;t beleive how many times I listened to that track. A few people have noted Ben Folds, but though he did produce the whole CD and sang on some tracks (That's Me Trying), it is Joe Jackson that sang on Common People. Now my memory of Joe Jackson is the jaz pop 80's hit Steppin Out, so when I found out that it was Joe Jackson who must be 50 now rockin out on Common People, I was stunned. I like Pulp, but this is a definite improvement on the original. And Harry if you liek stuff like Mates of State and Sufjan Stevens try some of these on for size; Sons and Daughters, Calla, Le Tigre, Abandoned Pools, Ceasers, Shout Out Louds, Statistics, Ringside, Brendan Benson, The Faint, Rilo Kiley, Nada Surf, Decmeberists, Death Ray Davies, Youth Group, Mat Pond PA, The New Pornographers/AC Newman, Stella*Starr, Starsailer, The Von Bondies, Wolf Parade, The Lashes, Astaire, Feist, Emiliana Torini, Elefant, Elkland, Robbers on High Street, Convoj, The 88, Rahim, Magic Numbers, Deerhoof, Art Brut, Marjorie Fair, Athlete, Elbow, Idlewild, Cloud Room, Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, The National, The Subways, Panic! at the Disco, Jospeh Arthur, Embrace, Say Anything, Ted Leo, Electrelane, Pinback, Bloc Party, Battle, Kasabian, and the greatest band currently making music today... Get the album "Red Alert" for the Shatner song ("Everything I do, I do with William Shatner, losing all my hair, while my belly's growing fat-ner.") I think their album "Boldly Go Down on Me" is the better one musically. "Set Your Phaser for Fuck" is absolutely brilliant.

I'd never heard of this album until tonight, and I've never liked any of Shatner's music. But, on a whim I downloaded it and I was shocked how good it is! This album may have hit the shelves in 2004, but I'd rather get turned on to a good album late than to never hear about it at all. This is a seriously good album. The song, "Real" is fantastic, and so are most of the other tracks. It's a very honest and personal album and I really like it.

The problem with just writing in text is that you can't always tell if someone is joking ... say about the speed that aicn sometimes gets news vs other sites. Well just in case ... I was talking about the 1998 film Free Enterprise where William Shatner mocks himself and his Star Trek persona quite well.

Anything that may be great about this album is directly attributable to him. Folds is a master craftsman and storyteller in a world that doesn't appreciate him nearly as much as it should. One day, if you haven't already, take 6 and a half minutes out and listen to a song called "Selfless Cold and Composed". It's one of the truly greatest things -- songs, films, books -- written, ever. Underground, One Angry Dwarf, Best Imitation of Myself, Jane, Mess, Philosophy, Brick, Missing The War, Zak and Sara, Gone, Carrying Cathy, Fired, Landed, Bastard... classics all. And, as well as his hilariously brilliant cover of "Bitches Ain't Shit", there's his absolutely fucking priceless piano redo of the Darkness' "Get Your Hands Off Of My Woman". The man is a musical genius. Shatner's lucky to have him.

You see, they call it a "record" because you don't have to hear it the day they release it- It's a RECORD of the music. A recording. It's timeless. It's there for people to hear a year, five year, fifty years later.

"I've had a lot of relationships, really, and through all of them it's always been the hope that I get dreadfully lovesick - and get that in return. More often than not, instead I find we settle for a relationship with someone we "like" and can "stand" and that the purpose of the relationship is to try and grow closer together to such a degree that eventually you might squint and maybe interpret it as love. That is so not where I'm at." Wow. I couldn't have put it better myself, and that's exactly where I would like to be. All the best in your happiness!

Well, lovecraftfan, there are a bunch of articles that are news now, so it does seem like we are blowing this out of proportion. But at the time this article came out, the only other articles that came out at the same time were almost as tedious as this one: sketches from some movie about costumes that we had already seen in a trailer a couple of months ago, no less than 3 bond articles about his car (sketch of car, the photo of car, and piss off you haters for not caring about the car and actor). Oh yeah, and a reprint from a year old quote that steven wants to make indy fun. Why do you think the indy article suddenly had even more bad jokes than normal? Why do you think we were complaining so much about all the "awsome" news a few days ago? Normally I like the site, lovecraftfan, but dont tell me I have no right to complain about quality. Thats like saying i have no right to complain about a book I read simply because i got it from the public library. Get it?

I'm not a Star Trek geek, nor are any of my friends, but I don't know anyone who doesn't own this album and listen to it regularly. It got rave reviews from most critics. Why are some people here so afraid to give such a universally praised album a listen? I agree with whoever said Shatner's never been better. Though BOSTON LEGAL is on and off as a whole, Denny Crane is pure genius.

Hey man, Glad you like the CD. I'm a member of the 501st, the SW Stormtrooper gropu who got to do thr AFI tribute the GL last year. I had to follow Shattner out and for 3 days of rehersals, just stood there not bothering him. But after that he would shoot the shit. I TOTALLY suprised him when I said, "you, you gonna do another CD with Ben Folds?" Ok, I'm in a Stormtrooper costume, and he was waaaaay taken back but was real cool durion the rest of the rehersals. He said maybe, but I let him know I loved "Has Been". I'm sure love for Has Been was the last thing a freakin Stormtrooper would say to him. He was cool as fuck and the man. Plus, we had to lift his ass, and that was not easy.

I just hadn't gotten around to buying it yet. So thanks for reminding me, Harry, I just picked it up yesterday. I've already heard Common People in a few places, but none of the other tracks. I'm a big Ben Folds fan, too, but getting out and actually buying a CD is always difficult. Usually I just let most music on the radio hit me for as long as it's there, picking up only a few select artists' CDs. I'd count Ben Folds among them.

Will Shatner has appeared elsewhere: On Lemon Jellys Album 64-95 (2005 XL Recordings). Lemon Jelly is an awesome UK downtempo act, they produced "Together" on the "Has Benn"-Album. In return, Shatner appeared on their album on the last track "64 aka Go", great epic piece. He also appeared on "Fear of Pop Vol. 1" (2002), which was produced by Ben Folds (also a great artist), who produced most of the "Has Been" Album.
