I've already seen "Manderlay" and there is certainly nothing "anti-american" about it. Von Trier basically ridicules humanistic values. Graces is, as in "Dogville", driven by idealistic goals, but she fails to identify human weakness as the very core of most problems. In a way, this might even even be regarded as a conservative point of view - it's certainly fair and hardly "ignorant" as Capone calls it. If you enjoyed "Dogville", you'll certainly enjoy "Manderlay", although the style doesn't seem as radical as it did when "Dogville" first came out...Lars von Trier certainly is one of the most talented directors working and I personally enjoy every second of his films.

Gave him a chance I endured Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville to see what the hype was about. Hated them. Three strikes and you are out, you pretentious hack. He is second only to Todd Solendz as the world's greatest purveyor of pointless, nihilistic dreck masquerading as art. Utter crap.

i don't know what you were smoking thoughout your college years there, quint, but lars von trier is simply the preminent director working in the world today. he will be remembered as we remember mozart. his work is breathtaking! i drove eight hours to see this film and found it not only a worthwhile trip but perhaps the most important trip i have made in my life. and that's eight hours one way! also, i was riding a bicycle, and i just had a balls operation. the film is absolutely worth the price of admission; in fact, i bought three tickets, used one myself, gave one to a homeless man (who later turned out to be jesus, long story) and took one and lit it on fire that its smoke might reach the nostrils of someone who needs to see this film and beckon them to the theater just like food smell does in those cartoons where it turns into a hand with a big finger making the "come on" gesture. lars von trier deserves a better planet than this one. no one draws chalk lines on the floor like him! he isn't just the second coming--he's the second AND THIRD coming! blaaaaahhhh! i love him! in sum, lars von trier can shove his stupid no-set-having blah-blah-talk-talk movies.
uhm I didn't think Manderlay was saying....

....African Americans would be better off as slaves today, and if that is what Capone thought was the focal point of the message then he takes themes far too literally. Sure, there was a suggestion that was similar to Bamboozled's message but it's more about American hypocrisy in forcing change onto people and believing what's right for everybody before people are ready to change and of course how that relates to today's politics. If movies that are already in release are getting a review on this site, then the review should offer a fresh take on the film and not be a blah echo of the content with no real analysis of the themes. Personally, I felt the film was good but didn't (and couldn't really) live up to Dogville. For one, Dogville's ideas developed insidiously over the course of the film, and that was far more haunting and disturbing, whereas Manderlay makes most of its ideas clear right off the bat as Grace is immediately dogmatic toward everyone and mostly unlikable in this film. However after the abuse she went through in the previous film it makes sense that she would act this way, transferring a need for more revenge. Anyway the film is relatively low on surprises compared to the first film and the novelty of the production style has worn off, but the acting is still quite good and the questions raised interesting. Worth seeing but ultimately less satisfying than Dogville, and thus makes me wonder how necessary the film was to begin with.

I'm Anti-American and I was born and raised here. I would leave this evil country, but how would I continue to collect my foodstamps and welfare check? By the way, you all have pretty much put me through college and paid for every movie I've ever seen (I love where your taxes go). Social Service is my middle name...not working for the man is my game. Do whatever you want to do...you know this to be true.

Sony can't be happy about this. Although, I'd kill to see something like this in my beloved Spider-Man films. Take my words and let them insult your eyes, because you know that they will, and you know this to be true.

You should be in the business, you should. On another note, I still say Von trier's best is the TV-series the Kingdom I & II. The idiots is overrated, and Festen (Vinterberg) is still the best dogme film out there. Discuss.

a guy who has never set foot in the US, and says he never will set foot in the US, is making a trilogy of movies that analyze and sit in judgement of the US? yeah, of course, europe is squeaky clean, always has been too, so it isn't like there aren't any faults closer to his home that he could make films about, are there?

They need a whole new catagory to classify the sheer genius and artistry given to him from God. I can't even go see hsi movies because I know he's too big a genius and will ruin all other films for me.

or a simplistic, moralistic, misogyinist charlatan. He's probably a bit of both. Breaking the Waves, depending on my mood, is either the best film of the nineties or a pseudo-profound piece of Euro-navelgazing. I haven't liked any of his other movies nearly as much.

For a very basic principle: He's a european who "THINKS" he knows what is wrong with american or mistakenly "Interpits" american history. Instead of confronting the issues that face race today, he chose to do an allegory on the past...and then get it wrong. For one, he blames BLACKS themselves for their situation after the Civil War. He also has "White chick saves black people syndrom" As well as "OOOH LOOK AT THIS....A BLACK MAN AND A WHITE WOMAN!...OOOOOOOOOOH JUNGLE FEVER! Instead of having a relationship between a strong man and a strong woman, we get this totally asnine "Facination" with color
