But, I am eager to see how they handle Martha's role on the show now. It's about time Annette O'Toole got a storyline, one where she doesn't end up in the hospital, or used just for reaction shots to Clark's comments. You know Lionel will try to move in. Well, not move IN, but, try to get him sum, and find out Clark's secret in the meantime. That would make a weird episode wouldn't it? (Clark comes down for breakfast and sees Lionel reading the business section of the Planet in his robe, Luthor looks up at him, Martha pours him a cup of coffee, he takes a sip, and says "Nice of you to join us." (cue music) "Somebody SAAAAAAVE me...") Back to the episode though, I wish they would take it in a little darker direction, bring back some Morgan Edge type characters, have Lex really get into some mob wars or whatnot, do something.

Well, since NEXT week involves Clark doin' some investigatin' with Lois, it seems we are a on a fast track, downhill slide to the end of the series - might as well bring in a young Jimmy Olsen with a digital camera, kill off Chloe so that Lois takes up her reporter mantle, and have some super deed of Clark's go awry and kill Lionel, thus giving Lex a reason to hate the once and future Superman and get down to the business of owning Metropolis and ridding the Earth of "the alien"... Oh, and some cameos by other JLAers would be nice - Hal Jordan as GL, Ollie Queen as GA, Ray Palmer as the Atom, Carter Hall as Hawkman and, of course, Bats... Damn, might as well toss in the city of Kandor and Lori Lemaris and the Legion of Superheroes... And for God's sake, don't forget Beppo the supermonkey!

So I guess Superman the movie jumped the shark as well as the comic book... if that is what you are giving for your reason. I don't understand how the Time Travel here is jumping the shark... if anything it makes it even more dynamic. Lana died by accident... Jonathon died BECAUSE of Clark... first by him saving Lana, and then AGAIN by him saving Lois. Honestly that jump the shark is sometimes garbage anyway. You can say most of season 4 was a giant jumping of shark... but then season 5 began awesome... until the stupid election started and it was getting bad again... up until last week which was awesome and hopefully will lead to the rest of the season being awesome.

You are on the ball today... I COMPLETELY agree. Jumping the shark doesn't apply for time travel if it was already done in source material twice... Im sorry. Also season 4 was definitely weak after a strong season 3, yet season 5 has been excellent with the exception of vampires...lol, not the election. Cause that played such a small roll. ...who wanted Lana to die? Don't get me wrong...she's hot and all, but at least the "I dunno, Mom, Dad and Chloe, should I tell her my Secret (tm) or not?" bullshit would have been over, and we wouldn't have heard the "Clark, people who love each other don't keep secrets" lecture. Plus, the hackneyed scene that Shermdawg beautifully described above (in Lex's study--which happens EVERY FUCKING EPISODE) would end and Clark would fuck up Lex's life. Then the series would end. Finally.

...who wanted Lana dead. And for no particular reason. I happened to tune in to the 100th episode and, upon realizing what it was, I kept watching (haven't really paid much attention to the show since season 3, though). When I saw Lana die, my Respect-O-Meter for the show and its creators jumped back up into the readable range. I knew it wasn't in line with DC continuity, but that's kind of what made me dig the idea. It was a curveball in an otherwise known storyline. We all know Clark becomes Superman, so none of his peril can be taken very seriously. We all know they'll never kill off Lois or Lex. But Lana...that would've been inspired (and would've given a Superman story a chance to rip something off from a Spidey story for a change). But then there was the whole back-in-time thing and I just knew Pa Kent was going to buy it (because he did in the DOnner film continuity). So this was just another story that really meant nothing. I think the only way they could get me to tune in again would be another JLA cameo...preferably Bruce Wayne. But even then, after Aquaman, I'd expect nothing better than an entertainingly mockable experience. Too bad, really. For a while (season 3 mainly), this show was interesting.

I think she is one of the hottest women alive... but Chloe is my girl. Not that Chloe aint hot too (especially in the new credits) but Lana... I don't know... its not that she annoys me per se... its just that character wise she is the least interesting. Chloe is shit. Plus hearing her and Clark both whine about how they aint screwing is SOOOOOOOOOOO annoying. I don't even get that.. he played football... he beats up normal humans... so he knows he can control his power! Whats the problem! Is it the super sperm? Did it blast a whole through the tissue and his barn roof during his "alone time" and he is afraid of what it will do to lana? Here is a toughie. F marry kill. Lana, Chloe, Lois. Chloe I would marry. The other 2 is hard. Lois is hot but does have that wrinkle mouth thing going on... but fake or not shes got the chest going for her. Lana got a nice body too though.... You know what.. I would kill Lois and F Lana, because shes half asian, and you know what they say....

For such big dullsville fans, you're all really out of the loop! It's been on the record for the last three years now that season 5 would end the series and lead into Warner Brothers' new Superman movie i.e. Superman Returns. Hence Tom Welling's new budding movie career, o.k. so he signed onto the fog but that role required a pretty mannequin and he's got five years experience! Very apropos, in my humble, and extremely accurate, opinion!

Yes, a "Smallville" Talk Back! Thank you, Herc. I hope tonight is good. I think this season has been strong overall, but there's one storyline that I love that's probably influencing my view of S5. Still, I think it's been very good, and tonight - yes, I want to watch for the Luthor Corp shake-up. What's going to happen? Have you seen it, Herc? And yes, when Lex learns that he's lost again. I don't care if the Kansas Senate Seat holds little power. He wanted it, and for it to be taken from him twice - and I know it's because of his father - makes me so sad. Gosh. I can't wait. I hope him and Lana get to talk too. I love them, but I'll keep that gushing to a minimum. Everyone though, I think we need to keep this TB going strong because Herc might take it away again and then we'll have to hijack one of the others. ;)

(( I've thought of a way to hide who you are. A secret identity? BRILLIANT! You do it by wearing glasses. Glasses? DUH! Clark Kent is Superman!" He spoke for all of us. That being said, I still hope that Erica-Lois buys it and Chloe takes over her identity. Now, that would be sweet.

DC Comics tried to explain years ago that a super-hypnotism with CK's glasses made everyone see CK as a homely guy compared to Supes - of course, fans were outraged and the story never became part of the continuity - that said, it's just one of the more charming aspects of the myth that presents a challenge for actors portraying the role - I just wonder when Lex and others are going to get a memory wipe so they don't recollect all those years with a decidedly non-meek CK...

as much as i would like to see "The Prince of Gotham" as a guest star, it wouldn't make much sense cause at this point in his life he is globetrotting and learning detective skills and tracking skills and ninja skills and shit like that. by the time he was 19, Bruce was probably in freaking Asia on some really old dude's mountain top sweeping the floors and washing the dishes to learn patience or something. oh and by the way, Bruce could so totally kick Clark's ass all over Smallville. and would freaking break Lex in half, just to prevent him from becoming a threat. and Lionel would stay the hell away from the Kent's if Bruce had a little "talk" with him.

I'm fairly new to Smallville, I've watched an episode here and there for the last couple seasons and I've noticed that the shows are good when it's about the Kents and the Luthors and totally sucks ass when it involves some alien or another super hero. First and foremost they need to recognize the limitations of their FX capabilities and write the show around that. When your FX look worse than the first season of Star Trek: TNG, make your stories more character driven. The best episodes I've seen didn't have a lot of FX and were more about the characters. And they really need to stop shoehorning other super hero characters into the show, it looks like they're fishing around for spin off possibilities. But no, that couldn't be true, could it?

I did. And yes, I noticed that "Batman" music too. But didn't you guys think it was good. It was much better than I thought it would be, and I thought everyone and all the storylines were well-covered and executed: Clark and Martha's grief, their friends being there for them, Lex and Lionel, Clark and Chloe and Andrea, Andrea and Clark, Clark and Lana, Lex and Lana, and Martha and Lionel. Did I miss a pairing? I think that's it. But I just loved the interaction between characters, and the reference to conversations that sure, we don't get to see, but it's still good to know. Like Lana helping Martha close the Talon, and Lex telling Lana that he tried contacting Clark. I love that. And I could go on about all the storylines in this episode, but I'll read what you all say and then comment. I will say that Tom and Annette were wonderful in their portrayals of Clark and Martha. I thought that last scene was very beautiful. And I don't think anyone else will mention it, so I will - the Lex/Lana scene was wonderful. I loved it. I loved it that it brought them back together and let them talk about what happened in "Reckoning", but it was also about Clark. I understood that this episode belonged to Clark and Martha, and I wouldn't want to intrude on that, but it was important to follow-up on certain storylines - especially the ones that will continue on. Lex/Lana are one of those and I think the writing for them was lovely, as were MR and KK together. Thanks. I will stop now, *g*. And off-topic, but I can't believe the Super Bowl is Sunday. Those two weeks sure went by fast. You know why? Bringing it back on-topic: "Smallville". :)

Plus, thank you to Accuvue for sponsoring this post about the episode. Talk about a sell-OUT, man! And who was that beltbuckle-wearing chick anyway, what made her so interesting that they would donate Danny Elfman's 1989 Batman score to her?!? And her CG action effects were STINKO! And just about everybody's character motivations or responses to others felt totally off - hey Clark, remember when you were emotionally devastated like 10 seconds ago?!? Lots of great character moments in this one -- The killer ending with Martha watching the video of Jonathan and young Clark on the tractor, Martha confiding to Chloe how grateful she is have her to talk to about Clark with Jonathan gone, Lionel starting to puts the moves on Martha, Lana (who stills needs to die, goddammit) presenting Jonathan's watch back to Clark, and so on. Normally Tom Welling is a pretty so-so actor, but he and Annette O'Toole sold that final scene. Big ups from a hardcore S-fan.

Do they need to borrow money from us? I'll donate some cash if they knock off the bad product placement. They did this earlier in the season with some car Lois was driving (and see how well that worked out - I can't even remember what car it was). But nothing tops the episode when Pete gave Clark his new mix CD saying "I call it 'The Talon Mix'"... then the camera lingers over the shot of Pete handing Clark the CD. I don't know why Clark didn't just look at the camera and say "Is this available in finer stores everywhere, Pete?" I think I heard Pete's soul dying in that scene. (Either that or it was the craptacular sounds of 'The Talon Mix' playing in the background).

Somebody mentioned that Supes should have a mask or something to hide his identity. What's brilliant about the Superman lore is that he hides in plain sight. Clark mentioned last night that he wanted to find someway in which he didn't have to hide who he really is. Metropolis is/has never looked for Superman among it's citizens. They look up in the sky. They expect superman to by flying around protecting the innocent etc. When you compare bumbling Clark with confident Superman, no one will give it a second thought. one issue I have with Smallville is that Clark is always in the middle of something saving the day. People of Smallville are supposed to forget? There was one episode that clark lost his vision, that would have been the perfect opportunity to don the glasses permanently. I'm curious to see how they will change his character to fit the mythology

Have Clark choose NOT to become Superman. Nobody would expect that. Or, as The Red Monkey said last night after watching the show, "have it end as a dream of Bo Duke after having fallen asleep while reading a Superman comic and drinking way too much moonshine." I actually liked that suggestion, considering Warner Bros. Television owns both properties and thus it could be doable...extra points for the Newhart-esque ending too.

It may have not had wow moments, but the development and interaction between the characters caused this episode to stand out more than most. I thought the 100th episode was among the worst, despite my jaw dropping several times in the first half (I was jumping up and down when Lex saw Clark run). The nuclear missle episode was kind of lame, despite having the most holy lose my shit moment of the entire series (IMO). But it's the story that makes a show great, and this episode did that noticable well.

The episode was pretty good, but I thought they got over that "meteor freak" thing. I was disappointed to hear that she got her powers from teh heart of a meteor Freak. In a show where people have x-ray vision, its easy to say that my disbeleif is suspended enough to accept other means of acheiving superpowers. BESIDES THAT... it did rock. I loved the subtle hint in the score to the Danny Elfman Batman theme.

As for Lex running, it's simple, he was trying to make a name for himself outside the business world, because lets face it he has more than a few skeletons in the closet that no amount of money could erase. By him earning the trust of Kansas, he would have a easier time moving up in the political world. Also, it was just a plot device. heh.

I just wasn't buying it last week because I saw it coming a mile away and funeral scenes are usually weak. But the ending this week with the video and Clark crying did finally hit home (though I wondered - do super tears do damage?). And Lana's right - no matter who's there for you when you're mourning, you are really alone in that experience. It's too bad they couldn't have worked out the rights and actually had this character be Bruce Wayne. Could have set up a nice dichotomy (and a reason for the theme). And my bet is on Lex killing Lionel, not Clark doing it. I mean patricide must run in the family. I think Lex will go too far, Lionel will die, Lex will at first be shocked and regret it, then he'll deny it and harden himself - kinda like what happened with Faith in the 3rd season of Buffy, but on a bigger scale.

Why don't they have Clark pushing Kellogg's cereal! Hep Hep Kellogg's Pep! Smallville jumped the Metropolis Sharks. (all right, I'm done.) They are going have to do something about his identity, or at least have be more discreet (or discrete), and not show off his powers in front of anybody else just because they have powers too. It's really pushing credibility. Hopefully they'll do something to fix that.

Questions about Lionel

I have kept up with this show from the beginning for the most part, but I seem to have missed a few things regarding Lionel. (1) Where and how did he get all of the money and power he has been flaunting most of this season? Lex still runs Luthercorp, and in one episode last year where Lionel possessed Clark's body, he tried to access a hidden bank account only to discover that Lex had discovered and raided it already. With regards to his attempted takeover of Luthercorp, I could understand it if he is leading an attempt funded by others, but what about the money he has thrown around in buying off the dirt Lex's guy had found on Jonathan, or the funding of Jonathan's campaign, or the employment of street gangs in his property scheme? What I'm really asking is if there was an episode that came out and stated how Lionel got back into a position of wealth and power? (2) Wasn't there an episode where Jor-El had inhabited the body of Lionel? Whatever came of that? (3) Did I misinterpret what happened at the end of the latest episode, or did Lionel back off of a likely-to-be-successful takeover of Luthercorp just because Lex had info that would sabotage his quest to bed Martha Kent? It seems a betrayal of the Lionel character for him to give up a chance to return to his former glory just because of a fixation on Martha. I mean, its not like Lionel did anything criminal in causing Jonathan's death, so he wouldn't have to fear going back to prison.

I'm not sure about Lionel getting his wealth back - I'm sure some detail was dropped at some point (I generally don't pay attention that stuff). But I think Martha is a major weak spot for Lionel. Underneath it all, he's still a lonely old man (I mean what does he have? His only son is against him), and now that Martha might be senator, there's a whole other reason not to alienate her. Either he has long term plans that involve seducing Martha (not just romantically, but politically) or he really wants to get with her because he's had a thing for her for a long time and doesn't want to jeopardize it. And yeah, he's being a bit hypocritical when he talks about weakness and vulnerability since Martha is obviously a weakness for him. But that's the character.
Uh, hello? The reason that Lionel wants Martha, is to find out a

Lex views Lana as a way to step back from the brink - Lionel sees Martha as a way to reclaim some of his innocence through her goodness - he fell for her when she worked for him - and his lust was clearly demonstrated when he took over Clark's body - hugged Martha and "ejaculated" heat vision - they established in the show that Clark's early HV was a byproduct of sexual arousal... Lionel is NOT all evil - this is what makes the character interesting - he is more than just cardboard - same with ol' Lex...

Lionel, is straight up evil. You saw how quickly they back pedaled on making him into a saint last season. And part of the reason that he acted the way he did when he hugged Martha, was simply because he wanted what his rival, i.e. Johnatan, the common man, had. He will toss Mrs.Kent aside once he figures out the truth about Clark. Of course he will somehow die at the hands of Lex bfore he can reveal it. That is, unless they have Clark kill him, thus giving Lex a reason to hate Supes ala Spier-man and Harry Osborn.

Wha, nobody noticed how unsuprised Lionel was that Clark saved him with his superspeed move? Either Lionel knows or "Jor-El" is still inside him encouraging/manipulating events. Kinda like how Yeweh "hardened the heart" of the Egyptian king in order to manipulate the events eventually in the favor of the Hebrews and their exodus from Egypt. I think the other tell was that Clark did not react one way or another by Lionel referring to him as "son" even if it is in Lionel's character to refer to any young man as "son" as a sign of dominance. Normally, Clark would react.

Haven't been a big fan of "Smallville," nor was I too excited about "Enterprise" - but with the scaping of the WB and UPN, for the creation of the "new and improved" CW ("C" for CBS/Viacom, owners of Paramount, and "W" for Warner), I wonder how long before we get Aquaman taking on Ray Mysterio in the "SmackDown" ring, or "Veronica Mars" teaming up with Tyra Banks for a teen-angst filled "60 Minutes. Somebody - ANYBODY - gas-s-s-s me up and send me back to 'The Village' before the fall season begins!

I think Clark's superspeed to save Lionel can be dismissed since Lionel couldn't see anything from that angle anyway (at least he didn't get knocked out this time). I don't think that picture had anything to do with Clark because why would Lionel use such a big secret for anything as petty as manipulating a state senator? It'd be an empty threat anyway since, by sharing it, he loses any power in knowing it. I suspect it had more to do with Jonathon and may be revealed to Clark one day as a way of showing him his father wasn't perfect. He is into Martha AND he is after Clark's secret. He's incapable of loving Martha though and he must surely already have his "theories" about Clark. He's just positioning himself for opportunity, like any good businessman.
