Seriously. They should've went with Gwen from the beginning: first movie, Doc Ock is the baddy, Captain Stacy is killed. Second movie, Green Goblin is the baddy, Gwen Stacy is killed. It would've been so easy to pull off. They're cowards, COWARDS I say. ... But they better kill her. And it needs to maybe be Spidey's fault.

....or something. Had to chime in on this, cos boy do I love me some Spidey. Gotta love Raimi, he loves throwing shit at Peter Parker 'til it piles up real high, and I reckon this is a very cool move. Is it me though, or does the actress look a little like that chick from Sex And The City? (Not that I know anything about Sex And The City of course...I'm fucking well hard.) But anyway, bringing in Gwen is genius. Raimi and Avi Arad know what they're doing, I have total faith, and I really hope that the rumours are true about 3 and 4 being shot back to back. The decisions that were made in 2 were all spot on for a fanboy like me. Brw, I'd really love just one shot where Spidey has web under his arms, just for the hell of it. And finally...don't kill MJ, I'm totally into Kirsten Dunst. I say, get the chicks together! Make it Spiderman: 3way. Ah, how quickly fanboys leave valid points behind and descend into wank fantasies...

Ever since Spidey 1, I've always wanted to have Gwen Stacey in the movies, cause I'm more of a Gwen fan than an MJ fan... and when Kirsten Dunst said she didn't want to do more than 3 movies, and Tobey was a little iffy on more too, I thought, well they should introduce Gwen in the third, and then if Kirsten leaves, instead of recasting and ruining the role, have her die or just leave or something, and you'll have Gwen ready to go in the fourth!!! AND NOW IT WILL HAPPEN!!!! THANK YOU SAM RAIMI!!!!!!!! but please God NO, don't follow the insane storyline with her and Norman that was just retarded... yea, it kinda pissed me off that her most famous scene in the comics (her death) was already used for MJ, and on the Spidey 2 DVD they said they basically combined MJ and Gwen into one character for MJ, so it does leave the question "what's left of Gwen that the real Gwen can be?"... but I trust Raimi, if he's been working on this script for the past year then it can't be bad... on a side note - I grew up with the Spidey movies (and X-Men, Superman, Batman, etc), but if your someone like me and from just watching the movie you get really attached, you'll research all this stuff, cause I've never picked up comic book in my life, and I know a hell of a lot just from reading shit online... and it's a great feeling to be almost on the same level as the fans who grew up with the comics, cause I don't feel like such an idiot when I'm around them...

as a long time Spidey fanatic and a somewhat less enthusiastic appreciator of the movies - this makes no sense to me. Mary Jane came 2nd for a lot of reasons, and her incarnation in the movies is sort of a combo of MJ, Gwen and Liz Allen from the old comics anyway. In my mind, the classic moment in Spider-man history was the death of Gwen's father years before... a police captain who always seemed on the verge of arresting Spider-Man or discovering his identity... who ends up revealing, in his last breath, that he knew who Peter was all along and now trusts him with his only daughter. At that moment, Peter loses a potential father and friend, but the tragedy of the loss is lightened by the knowledge that Gwen is still alive... though darkened again when she blames Spider-man for killing her father. After that, her death always seemed like overkill to me... leaving an impossibly scarred hero that could never return to the mix of wisecracking and angst we all love about the character. Maybe Raimi will do the Death of Cap Stacy thing, but there's no way it can ever be the same now that MJ is already there and she (along with half the city) has already seen Peter unmasked.

But Spider-Man 3 is becoming pretty convoluted plot-wise, they'll have to make this one longer than the other two. We have Peter + MJ, Peter + Gwen, Gwen vs MJ vs Peter (inevitable), Spidey vs Identity revealed, Spidey vs Sandman, Spidey vs Venom (probably), Peter vs Daily Bugle and then an entire arc and a half involving Harry Osborne not to mention the shenanigans Aunt Mae will get herself into. This is easily the biggest film of the next two years - much more than Superman Returns - and after Spider-Man 2, people will be expecting a bigger, better, longer film. Damn I hope Raimi hits this one outta the park, but I hope he knows how to handle the dreaded third film in a trilogy - AND find a way to include Bruce Campbell somewhere...

He cast Mary Jane(Bryce Howard) as Gwen Stacy, Gwen Stacy(Dunst) as Mary Jane, and he cast the ideal Spider-man(Topher Grace) as some other character. Tobey Maguire has proven he doesnt know how to play Peter Parker or Spider-man. Unless Peter Parker and Spider-man are supposed to be mouth-breathing retards. If that's the case Maguire is note perfect.

Topher Grace as Spider-Man
by twitaman
Jan 18th, 2006
07:08:37 PM
I never thought about it until Rant Breath mentioned it, but now that I've heard it that sounds like it would've been a great idea. Why? Because even though I think Tobey is a great actor there's one crucial part of Spider-Man's character that I never thought he could handle well. And that's Spidey's sense of humor. The guy was a smart ass and that's one of the reasons I loved him as a kid. Jokes and quips fall flat out of Maquire's mouth. But I could totally see Topher handling that side of Spidey's personality easily. In addition, Grace is also a fine actor and could handle the dramatic parts too. Well, too bad he wasn't a bigger star when they cast the first film.

Whose going to do the main song for this film? My Chemical Romance, I suppose. Angst filled, whinny, nonsensical, horribly casted, terrible camera work, piles of crap. Excellent casting... Too bad they didn't plan this ahead. They're just winging it and that equals convolution...

Yes, there are many, but most are already established from the previous movies, so the groundwork is already done, really we're only getting 3 new characters. It is very funny how if you switched Dunst and Howard you'd have had it perfect from the getgo...I can't wait to see what fun Sam Raimi has with The Sandman in terms of action.

I mean, Topher's part IS "unknown" at the moment, so who knows? It could really be that he is playing Clone Spidey... (in my dreams)

Or maybe they're going to totally screw with everything and combine Gwen with Black Cat. I don't think Mary-Jane is going to die at the end of this like people are predicting. It would be the big suckass end to everything and Peter would have no motivation 'cause she's dead. If Dunst is leaving then I think MJ will just decide that she has to move away from Peter. Maybe Peter kills Harry and she sees it. I like the idea of them kind of replacing MJ with Gwen. Hell, she could even go her own redhead. But, of course, Gwen may die. I actually think this will be the last movie, then there'll be a string of straight to DVD shitfests featuring all the fuckass villains that didn't make it to the big screen. Just to please the fanboys. If Raimi ain't doing it, I ain't watching it. And I can't see him going beyond the trilogy. Maybe in this one Harry will have a knife at Aunt May's throat and this will force Peter to kill him.

Plus with all these characters, I suspect he's going to try and throw as much shit at Peter Parker as I possibly can in about 2 and a half hours and guess what, we're gonna have a ball watching it....

I was not aware that Gwen Stacey was THE MOST beloved character in the history Spiderman. A beloved character to be sure. Sounds good to me, casting seems good. Changing subjects however: Brodester, I have to disagree with you: "VENOM is the character with the most intrigue... VENOM VENOM VENOM VENOM VENOM VENOM VENOM... and possibly carnage! And spidey in the symbiote costume!" Venom can be intriguing at first, I however have a hard time taking that particular character very seriously, Venom in the comics became what is essentially a caricature of himself, the type of character that was so ridiculously over the top as time went on (yes over the top for this medium is hard). To be fair however this is more a product of the shameless over use of this character by Marvel (second only to the exploitation of Wolverine... though I still find Wolverine to be one of my favorite characters, go figure. Fuck, I still have that retarded Wolverine and Venom crossover that they did in the late 90's - god it was awful, but I was a completist, damnit. When you peal away all the crap and look at Wolverine you still have a solid character.) Venom is a mixed bag, if done well he could be interesting, but considering the track record with the handling of the villains in the previous movies: Green Goblin was okay, but I but the design was weak - Doc Ock solid performance, great design, but that movie just fell apart by the end (precious tritium my ass, they use that shit in fucking pistol and rifle sights for fuck's sake so god damn retarded, and to prevent the miniature sun from taking on mass and destroying the city you what dump it in the fucking river, and what it will stop, a self-contained nuclear inferno will be doused by the Hudson. The Pseudo-science in most comic books isn't even that fucking juvenile anymore, god damnit). Anyway, I would like to see Spiderman have the symbiote costume (or at least see the black suit in some form on screen). But as far as Venom being good news, no, I just fear that he will be an awful, awful screen character.

I spent The Village thinking about how much she resembled her father. I don't want to put her down, she is a very talented actress, but anyone posting that she is beautiful is seeing something that I just don't. When I glanced at the picture of Bryce above I actually thought it was Cynthia Nixon from Sex & the City. I think you're all faulting Kirsten Dunst because she didn't mirror the MJ you imagined based on your impression of the comic book MJ. For the rest of the world Dunst was great as MJ. She had a real sweetness and tender quality that eclipsed her attractivness. But for a character that is written as a real beauty it will be distracting if they cast someone who is not particularly beautiful, and more of a tomboy. I would rather see any of the actresses mentioned by the posters above instead of Howard. Then again, maybe the casting of Howard indicates that they made sheer likability the priority. Like her father, Howard is the sort of person you'd love as a pal, someone so nice audiences immediately feel sympathy for her, which would make her violent death all the more tragic. If that is how they present her, as a sweet girl who is Peter's object of affection rather than of passion then that could work. Although Allison Hannigan might've been a better choice in that regard (same undeniable likability, but cuter). If they've announced it then there is no changing at this point and nothing to do but wait for the finished product. Maybe they can use all that CGI magic to make her a knockout. That would be a true revolutionary use of CGI, for hollywood to start casting actresses purely on acting ability and then let the CGI make them look like Scarlett Johanssen. They could have one DVD cut where the actress looks skinny and waifish and one where she has the curves bangin. Instead of arguing about her hair colour and the poor actress having to dye it, you just select with your DVD remote what colour her hair is. Click! and Scarlett Johanssen turns into Zhang Zyi. Click! again and she is "old school" Lindsay Lohan. Or Natalie Portman. And all along the actress playing her is a chubby girl with an overbite and a unibrow who graduated top of her class at Juliard. Or a brilliant Shakespearean prodigy who studied acting at the Sorbonne and has a faint moustache, giant mossy clumps of armpithair, and a slight curvature of the spine. Wardrobe costs would be slashed as all she would need to wear is that unitard Andy Serkis wore when playing Gollum and King Kong, but what you see is Angelina Jolie in a wet t-shirt.

It cheapens the relationship between MJ and Parker and absolutely taints the relationship between Gwen and Peter. I am very disappointed in the fact that they brought Gwen Stacy in now, trash her character and then (SPOLIERIFIC COMIN AT YA) likely kill her off a la the comics, but this time with Green Goblin's son doing the deed (See Spiderman 4, probably). its ironic, so many hardcore fans of the source material for Spiderman and LOTR are the harshest critics and bashers of the cinematic incarnations of the books and comics. makes me glad i am able to enjoy the movies without such baggage to get in the way. maybe those who seem so enraged and distraught would prefer a movie was never made based on their literary/comic favorite? seriously, it isn't as if making some changes during the translation from page to big screen is anything new in movies, so why should it be so shocking now? in the original Jaws book, Hooper gets eaten by the shark, but you don't see people screaming and crying that because he lives in the movie that Jaws just can't be good because Spielberg didn't respect the source material. maybe spidey fans should be more appreciative that a 3rd Spiderman movie is on its way, while fans of other comics and books are still waiting to see their favorites given $200 million budgets for a big screen translation. for some, the glass is always half empty i guess.

Spider-Man 2 is EASILY the best superhero movie ever made (and I'm including The Incredibles) so have a little faith. I, too, was hoping for the Black Cat storyline. It would have dovetailed PERFECTLY into Mary Jane's expression as Peter swung away at the end of 2. How long before worried turns into nagging which turns into, "I don't want you to be Spider-Man anymore." Then along comes Black Cat, a woman who not only accepts Peter as Spider-Man but loves him because he IS Spider-Man. But it looks as if they've decided to go another way. But after Spider-Man 2, Raimi and company have earned my trust. I can't wait.

Hope you're doing well, etc. Ok, now that the pleasantries are out of the way, let's get down to business. I disagree with what you said about fans criticizing the movies. Spider-man has been around for over 40 years now and that's a lot of history the filmakers would be remiss to ignore. Think of it this way, the writers of the comics must be doing something right if the material has worked for so long and so well for so many people. The Gwen Stacy story is an integral part of Peter Parker's growth as a superhero. You can mess with Venom and his pedigree, you can even make Harry Osborn the Hobgoblin for all I care, but Gwen is part of who Peter eventually becomes, a story that is tragic and essential- a story I hope and pray Raimi and company get right. My gripe here is that the context for introducing Gwen Stacy is all wrong now. Gwen was supposed to be Parker's first love, and now that MJ has occcupied that position in the films, Gwen's story (and ultimately Peter's character) are diminished. Does Peter break up with MJ to be with Gwen? Well, my guess is that they are going to go the Ultimate Spider-man route and have Gwen be a close, dear friend of Peters that a symbiote, probably Venom (Carnage in the Ultimate books) kills. This is Bendis' interpretation, and while it is interesting, it is not nearly as monumental as the original story done in Amazing Spider-man. Well, that's it for now, talk to you soon.

Spidey's pretty much hooked on MJP at this point, are they going to break them up AGAIN just to shoehorn her in? Plus they already used her death situation in the first movie...but copped out on it, one of a number of really weak spots in the first film. The sequel was great, I'd rather see them keep things simple and just make another solid spidey flick than worry too much about squeezing in too many characters and subplots.

Kristen Bell is cute, charming, and funny. She could have totally played a potential new love interest who charms Spidey and then tragically dies (If that is what they are doing here.) I wonder if Spidey 3 will be like the comics when MJ got jealous that PP was out webslinging and saving people and not paying her attention and spending time with her. If they do that, that could explain why he could start falling for someone new. Still puzzling news though.

But she's WRONG for Mary Jane. Mary Jane is a sexpot with a heart of gold. She's gorgeous, voluptuous and a little bit dangerous. She just a hint of stripper in her...know what I mean? Someone like Elisza Cuthbert (if you gave her red hair) more closely matches my ideal on screen Mary Jane than Dunst. Scarlett Johannson might also be able to pull off her smoldering sexuality. Dunst just comes off as a little girl. I still love the movies, but that part is miscast.

Hair dye blows. You might as well say they could cast Joan Rivers for the part and have her get another face lift. They would be better off declaring MJ a dirty blonde. That would be better than the awful dye job they had Dunst get. And if they want to use this actress, they would be better of declaring Gwen Stacy a redhead, because going redhead to blonde is going to make this girl look horrible. She will probably look even worse than Alba did as a blonde, if that's possible. [I would even have preferred a brunette Invisible Girl to what they actually decided to do.]
Interesting news...

...and it's sparked some really intersting discussion. Please excuse me if I piggy back on anyone's idea from above without properly crediting them, but my head is kind of spinning with possibilities. First, I think it could be a very smart move to reverse the MJ/Gwen roles in Peter's love life. Changing up comic stories for the movies has never bothered me if done thoughtfully and well. They have a chance to do that here. Is Raimi trying to do too much? Maybe. It sure does seem like a lot of familiar "name" characters, who fans are going to want to see developed some, to cram into one movie. But then I look at the list of named characters that will apparently flash on the screen during X3 and I feel like the Spidey 3 roster is still pretty manageable. I agree that Dunst was miscast and pretty much felt so from jump. After seeing her in The Virgin Suicides, I was sure that reports of her playing MJ were erroneous and that she had to be Gwen. Her character from VS was SO Gwen - that tragically distant-yet-desperate to connect perfect little daddy's girl. It would've been inspired to cast her as Gwen and kill her off in the first film. My reservations about Tobey as Spidey were more physical until I actually saw him in the role. Then I knew he was wrong for both Spidey and Peter. He plays both as if muttering his lines through a mouthful of Prozac, and Peter was always played as a smartass, even when he was being pusheed around. That characteristic was just amped to the Nth degree while in costume. I discovered That 70's Show in syndication (pretty much missed it in first run) about the time I saw Spidey 1, and I was telling people then how perfect it would have been to cast Topher Grace as Spidey. He had the perfect physique and personality for high-school Spidey at the time, and could easily train into the shape he'd need to have for more mature Spidey. Plus, after killing off Gwen in the first film, Raimi could've made a play for Laura Prepon as Mary Jane in the sequels. How perfect would that have been? But what is, is. The movies have been pretty darned good despite missed oppportunities. And if Raimi can actually make up for those with this addition to the cast and a well-written plot, I'll be one happy camper with the franchise as a whole. And I say "as a whole" because I will be very surprised if we see a Spidey 4, regardless of how good 3 ends up being or how it does at the box office. I just don't see Tobey coming back.
Why killing Gwen again is a mistake

I know Gwendolyn Stacy is doomed to an early death in whatever medium she appears in, but killing Gwen again in Sam Raimi's next Spider-Man picture would be a mistake. Gwen's death had the impact it had not because she was a one issue character, but because she was established. She was one of the ones Peter was supposed to SAVE EVERY TIME. Killing Miss Stacy in the same film that you introduce her would be a waste. Killing Mary Jane Watson, however, would hold the same shock that Gwen's death had in the comics, given that Raimi's MJ is a three film bird. Let's hope Raimi saves Gwen just this once. http://tinyurl.com/e37tm

Thanks for the comments bud but I think we are both being a little unfair. On Tom Clancy, I really didn't mean to take you to task, I just thought it was worth giving Clancy some credit for coming out against the Iraq war (since your post implied that he would never write a book against the war - in fact, I think he already co-wrote one). Otherwise I would agree with you because I don't like the guy either. I was just trying to be fair to the dude. And as for Ron Howard, you're right, I was being unfair because I want to give this dude some tough love. Just because he's a nice guy and has been nominated for Oscars doesn't mean we should treat him as a real director. The guy did fuckin EdTV. He did the fucking Grinch. Willow. Gung Ho. Cocoon. His best movie is what, Splash? But the entertainment media treats him like he's in the top tier of respectable directors. But you're right, going that over the top negative on a guy (who is not even the topic of the talkback!) is very Talkbacker. I should be striving for excellence here. So you were right to call me out. I stand by the rat soup eating motherfucker part, though. thanks Peven.

With that ridiculous fucking wig she is sporting in Superfag Returns. Anyhow, I am not nitpicking about hair color, please don't get my earlier post twisted. The hair color comment was an observation. My main critique was based on how fucking ugly they both are. It makes no sense to make a red head with freckles blonde and spackle make up on her face to conceal the freckles. Or cast an ugly blonde girl with Vampire Teeth to be a sexy girl. They should just recast the whole mutherfucker. Start with casting with Heath Ledger's coy boy bottom bitch as Spidey.

If we're picking and choosing canon (and we clearly are) for source material, there's no reason it can't be Ultimate Venom, who was more parallel to Peter (science project gone wrong) than 616-Venom. I always said it would be a great spin on the neurotic dual existence plot point from the first two films: PP is tired of being the Spider, but who else will? Suddenly, this friendly neighborhood Venom (black SM costume and all) shows up to make life so much easier for Pete! Suddenly Pete has time for MJ and patching things up with Harry... while Venom (Brock) is dating Gwen Stacy (another nice parallel). Venom makes short order of taking out Sandman, while HarryGoblin watches from the shadows. Since Venom is the "new" Spider-Man, HarryGoblin attacks him, kidnapping Gwen Stacy in the process (you see where this is going, kids?) leading to her death on the bridge-- a failure on Venom's part where Spidey succeeded in SM1. Spidey swings back into action to capture HarryGoblin, but that's not enough for Venom, who outright KILLS Harry! At this point, the costume is in charge, its mask contorting into the MacFarlane/Larson-esque toothy, drooling grin we've been waiting the whole film for! And then the REAL fight begins! What do you think, too fanfic? Sam Raimi stopped returning my calls.

The closest analogy I can give is a package of tasty tasty sliced turkey thats about a day past the sell by date. Brilliance! But where does Haden fit in? He's the only reason why I can't see things shaping up that way. Earlier, I mentioned that they're likely going to kill off MJ and retain Gwen. Not only because Dunst has mentioned that she's getting tired of the role, but also because I can honestly see Hollowood merging the Gwen and Felicia Hardy characters (which would be a dreadful, missed opprtunity). And you know where that'll lead. I'm willing to bet on it and I'm not even the type to buy raffle or scratch tickets. Here's another prediction, though -- somehow, some way, Topher's going to assume the Spidey mantle in this flick. Not sure how it will happen. Perhaps some retelling of the clone mess. It *will* happen, though. Willing to paypal a gentleman's bet of $10 on either or both of these predictions. BTW, I still hope I'm rawng, so it would be money well spent!

Thanks all for the kind words about my crackpot theory. And let me address a couple of comments: 1. Ultimate Venom was NOT a clone, a la 616's Ben Reilly. We do not speak of him. 2. We've only seen one picture of Thomas Haden Church as Sandman, and that could be one of many one-scene villains Venom/Spidey takes on (see also: Ken Watanabe as "Ra's Al Ghul" in Batman Begins). Who knows, we may get all sorts of villains in a crime-fighting montage, and we only know about Sandy! Finally, as far as the killing off of Mary Jane, perhaps this is Raimi & Co's wish fulfillment that Spidey should have always ended up with Gwen (see also: House of M... no, on second thought, don't see that). Or you want a real mindblower? Have Spidey fuck up and let Mary Jane die early in SM3 (see also: Bourne Supremacy) and as a result he drops out of crimefighting just in time for Venom to show up (as a hero like in my previous treatment). Of course, Eddie's concerned girlfriend Gwen doesn't know who can relate to what she's going through, except Peter (for reasons I can't make up right now) and she leaves Eddie for Pete when he Eddie goes psycho. In this version, Gwen lives. Until HarryGoblin shows up in SM4. Peter Parker will be like the Sipowicz of boyfriends. Why doesn't Avi Arad put me on payroll?

Why is it that the fans have all the best story ideas (and are validated as such within their community) but cannot achieve any kind of rank in the Hollywood studio system? Then we read articles all about how M.S. Johnson is a huge Daredevil fan, how Tim Story is a huge FF fan, and how Brett Ratner is a huge X-Men fan. Just once I want a fan to be the director (or writer, natch), not the other way around! But I guess Joss Whedon or Kevin Smith won't be doing any comic adaptations any time soon. Or here's an idea: put the person in charge of the source material in a position of input on the film (see also: Frank Miller, Robocop 3-- er, I mean, Sin City) You know what, come to think of it, I guess that would mean Chris Claremont would have to write the X-Men movie... and that would not do. Man, I need Lauren Shuler-Donner to lift that restraining order.
