That's like a George Lucas trailer with all dialogue. Smith's visuals don't exactly drum up enthusiasm. This could still be good if the movie contains, you know, people talking. And I just noticed it for the first time, but Dante looks a lot like David Brent.

(copied from other article) I thought I remembered Smith saying that people like Affleck wouldn't be in the flick, that he'd be exploring his roots, so to speak; yet Affleck, Lee, and Suplee are all in the trailer. Granted they all look like they have small parts, but I thought he said he'd avoid even cameos. ::shrug:: Good to see Kevin Weisman (a.k.a. the only watchable part of Alias) in there though. I'm still looking forward to this, though still with mild trepidation.

Kevin has a deep seeded fear of success. So to make sure the film doesn't do TOO well he darkens his door with Affleck, if even for a brief cameo. With his poisonous box office mojo infecting the production, its ensured to not be too successful and lets Kevin keep it real.

It's been 13 years since Clerks 1. This film could pull in 13 million opening weekend...or in total 13 million. After this Smith should try a Wood Allen (sounds like a drink) and make some sort of Match Point type film. Something you'd look at that you'd never associate Smith doing. How about a court room drama like A Few Good Men. Or a period (ha ha period) piece like Lion in the Winter. You get what I'm saying. Something that has great dialogue but could have been made by other directors yet being made by Smith is just that much more amazing. That's my advice for Smith make a movie that's all talking but talking from a genre some consider dead.

No other director is as loyal to his fans as Kevin is. Sure, he's not everyone's taste, but who is? Michael Bay? George Lucas? Rob Reiner? Cameron Crowe? All those directors have fans and all have haters, but NONE are as kind to their fans as Kevin is. He realizes that he has a nice house, lots of extra cash and a chance to make more movies thanks to his fans. I am not a Smith apologist either. I do not like Dogma or Jersey Girl so much, but am a big Clerks, Mallrats & Amy fan. I have met 5 directors in my life and Kevin is one of the nicest in person (although a bit stressed out at Vulgarthon). My ONLY 3 beefs with Smith is his willingness to whore himself out on shitty tv shows (Tonight Show, Yes Dear, Veronica Mars, Degrassi), his insistence on putting his ex-journalist (non-acting) wife in everything now and his hatred of Family Guy. Other than that, he's cool.

How completely fucking lame. The hardcore Smith devotees will love it of course, because, well Hell, they always do, I mean most of them even love Jersey Girl for fuck's sake, but I think pretty much everyone else is waking up to this particular one trick pony by now. After all, there's a damn good reason why he still hasn't had that break out hit, it's because most people are sick of watching the exact same shit only slightly moved around or set to slightly different backgrounds over and over and over again. And now that everyone knows exactly what to expect dialogue wise from Smith, and knows every damn beat that he throws out there backwards and forwards because he's put the same shit out there repackaged so many times, people are also waking up to the fact en masse that he can't direct for fucking shit. I mean people bitch about Paul Anderson or Michael Bay, but those guys are fucking artistes compared to Smith's lumbering and stylistically dead on arrival "point the camera in the right direction and shoot people talking" so called style. Succeed or fail I just wish he'd at least try something different, take some risks (and no, the cloyingly saccharine and disneyised Jersey Girl doesn't count), but at this point I don't think Smith has the balls to actually go out there are try to do something outside of his comfort zone, so all we get fed is the diminishing returns of the same stale old shit over and over and over again. As I said, how completely fucking lame.

"Delusional Film-School Pissant". It's a really chilling look into the mind of a failing independent filmmaker... think Bowfinger except not at all likable in any way... who, having exhausted all sane avenues toward making his movie as he's not really that talented, has a nervous breakdown and comes out the other side believing that if he can childishly insult an established an successful filmmaker on an internet page long enough, that filmmaker will love him for his "honesty" and be his best friend and find him a studio backer and bring him food and water and smite his enemies and stroke his hair as he goes to sleep at night. He's obsessed with the idea that if he can just trick him into meeting him and seeing his student film, even if it's through adversarial internet flaming, he will look at his movie and they will lock eyes and open-mouthed kiss and all his dreams will come true. It's this sad hilarious hideous kind of a cross between "The King of Comedy" and that Eminem song "Stan" and, oddly, "Tales of a Fourth-Grade Nothing". It's a really uplifting work, in that, you're really uplifted in knowing that at least you're not that guy. Had no idea it was a novel, though, got it in the autobiography section.

This is a site full of militant movie buffs: sad bastards who live in their parents' basements, downloading scripts and trading what they believe to be inside info about movies and actors they despise yet can't stop discussing. This is where you go if you wanna hear frustrated would-be filmmakers mouth off with their two-bit, arm-chair-director's opinions on how they all could've made a better Episode One....

Looks like you worked in some inventive effects on a small budget. The digital age has produced way too many pretentious, talentless Fellini wannabes; I'm always happy to see digital work that doesn't take itself too seriously and has fun with the limitations of the medium, rather than trying to make the next 8 1/2 for $5,000.

How in the fuck does such a small clip bring out such lunacy? I thought it was pretty fucking funny myself. Nothing earth-shattering, but then it's not meant to be. Yet most of the nay-sayers are acting like Smith just shat in their mouth. Or maybe they're upset that he didn't. The Lion certainly seems upset about something. On what planet, exactly, would a Hollywood director with a studio backing accept a "private screening challenge" with some film school guy who hasn't been able to get the job done? Bear with me, it makes no sense on a couple of levels. Firstly he's become accomplished in his field and while many folks don't like his movies, many folks DO like his movies. Everyone movie isn't for everyone and enough folks like his movies for him to have a contract with the Weinstein Co. Secondly, from a business standpoint, why on earth would his bosses (Bob and Harvey) ever allow him to do such a thing, even if he felt like it? You talk as if you're the better man for throwing out some childish chalkenge to screen your movie against his in a room full of people who don't like his movies. Chances are he'd still get the better reaction as these are the same folks who line up for Q and A's and ask their burning questions. What has he got to prove to you? The true challenge is getting your movie bought and released and building a career. You want to challenge the guy? At least be somewhat realistic about it.

...it just might very well be that you have some talent when it comes to motion pictures (although that teaser was a bit too bland to decide from). However, there are a couple of things wrong with the way you choose to make your presence known here. First of all, you're acting like a complete asshole. If you had been a little bit more friendly, humble or at the very least sportsmanlike, I'm sure people would not make too much of an issue with any perceived flaws they may find in your work. With your attitude, though, even the slightest weakness in your film will be seized upon and used to beat you into a figurative pulp by anyone who thinks you're a wanker (there will be quite a few). Being self-confident and convinced of the righteousness of one's chosen path in life is all good and dandy, but being a dick is just that: being a dick. If Vincent Gallo can't get away with it, why on Earth would you think you'd be any better at it? Second of all, challenging KS to a film-off is truly sad. I enjoy most of the guy's movies, but he's not exactly the epitome of cinematic art or some unassailable fortress of Wellesian stature, the crashing down of which at your mighty hands will win you fortune and acclaim across the civilized world. And how exactly do you judge a cinematic competition between a lightweight, geekcentristic, comedic film and what looks to be a dour, self-important meditation on all things Tom Lowe?

I love most of Smiths movies, except for Mallrats and JASBSB, they were ok, but I like it when he mixes in some serious themes with the dick and fart jokes. And it's not Lion's use of obscene gerunds that ignites my ire. It's just the attitude in general. "You movies suck, my movies don't." This kind of bullshit misses the point entirely and makes the TBs unbearable at times. We're all guilty of it occasionally but it would be great if he and others would identify exactly what about Kevin's movies "suck" so we can discuss instead of just calling each other "motherfuckers" and inviting one another to "throw down." Smith & Family Guy answer............

Smith is either bitter that his Clerks cartoon was quickly cancelled and Family Guy was picked back up 3 years after cancellation or he is such a hardcore Simpsons fan (well known fact) that he will not give Family Guy a chance. Either way, he HATES Family Guy and Seth McFarlane. In fact, in an episode of the Clerks cartoon, they show the animated show writers holding a book entitled "Lazy Movie Reference Jokes Made Easy by Seth McFarlane" (or something like that. Clear as day. Kevin's fans on his viewaskew.com site (being the mindless ass-kissing automatons they are) all seem to back him up that Family Guy sucks and The Simpsons rule. It's fucking stupid. Kevin will not even DISCUSS Family Guy. When asked about the show, he will say "Next question" or just shake his head. I think he's ass-hurt that his little Clerks cartoon (which should NEVER have gone to network tv in the first place. HBO anyone?) was a failure and the cancelled/resurrected series Family Guy has a LEGION of fans worldwide (it's HUGE in Britian as well as the US).
Wow...lots of fun stuff in here today.

In order of importance, first, BendersShinyAss, your parrot friend reminds me of a joke. This old guy is sitting on a park bench, just staring at this pierced, spiky green-haired punk, who finally looks at him and shouts: "What're you lookin' at, ol' man? Ain't you ever done anything wild in your life?" And the old man smiles and says: "You know, it's funny you should ask that, because when I was a younger man I was in the Navy and one night I got so very drunk that I had sexual intercourse with a parrot. Now, looking at you, I can't help but wonder how old you are and where you're from." On another note, I'm a little bummed that Clerks 2 appears to be in color. I thought the black and white of the original was about as close as Kevin's ever come to making a non-verbal statement in any of his movies, and it worked for me. Maybe there's a reason for the color, though. Have to wait and see when I rent this. Meanwhile, for Randall Flagg and the choice of music on Smith's trailer: Sometimes 19 is just 19. I doubt this movie's about you. And, finally, The_Lion, the Wizard called and he wants his courage back. You apparently have no idea how to use it. He'll trade you for some of the brains he had left over from the Scarecrow. Trust me, it will be an upgrade for you.

Is he trying to prime the pump by revisiting the work from his youth? Oh GOD not "Chasing Amy II!!!" His movies look a hellova lot better now, and this time he's not working with a fancy cinematographer, no, he's got D.P. Dave from the original Clerks behind the camera. Dialogue and plot wise? I have no idea. But just from that trailer, the dude can work the camera alot better now, for sure. Hell, just look at that swoop in shot of Randal near the end, that's a great little move there.

My fellow talkbacker and fellow filmmaker wannabe, that trailer was horrid. Sorry, but it has to be said.****************** As far as Clerks 2 goes (thank GOD he dropped the "Passion of the Clerks title) maybe it will be funny in the way Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back is funny, but it can't really have the impact the original Clerks had can it? And Kevin isn't a very good filmmaker, but he can definitely write funny dialogue. What is up with Jason Mewes? He looks like a totally different person. His features look all chiselled and shit. And his eyes look "hard". Hopefully he is still funny as hell.

Yeah, you are coming off like an asshole. The problem with that is this: If your film is shitty, then you will look like a total/complete idiot. If your film is good, then you didn't need to throw down this "challenge" in the first place. But judging from your trailer, it isn't looking too good for your film. A teaser like that works for something that has a built-in audience (like if a teaser only showed the batsignal, and then summer 2007 or something) but your teaser has nothing saying "watch me". Oh, and did you shoot in Lone Pine, CA? ************* I don't get all the fat virgins with no social skills saying how Kevin's wife is not attractive. She is in a league that all y'all ripping her won't ever reach. That being said, she does look old. Older than she is listed anyway. I didn't recognize her from the trailer. I thought she was some actress playing a "Jerry Hall" type, who is way older than Dante. Jennifer's imdb bio says 1971 was her D.O.B. Might want to check that birth certificate Kevin!

I have a bad feeling about this drop but Smith is actually brave for doing a followup to Clerks which I personally consider to be the funniest film of the nineties. Actually I personally consider just the scene where Olaf sings 'Bezerker' to be by itself funnier than any other film of the nineties. There's a lot of pressure on this. It can't be easy to win universal acclaim, hit a backlash and then return to your greatest triumph. Anyway here's hoping it does not suck.

I couldn't believe that you were actually this naively arrogant but... "The Plan".. it's a fictional sequel to "Plan 9 From Outer Space" and your entire online personae is sort of a 21st Century Ed Wood sorta thing? Awesome. My faith in humanity is slightly returned. Man, Lion, what other characters do you have lined up for us? A prop comic? Maybe a country-style stand-up who deconstructs Jeff Foxworthy-style comedy as he goes? Got himself banned because Vern pulled him up on something and it sent GZ completely over the edge - like a robot thats just been asked to understand the meaning of love. He started posting, one after the other, sheer nonsense that had even me scratching my head. He even started cutting and pasting Ringbearers Kong posts. It really was one of the more bizzare of talkback moments. I just assumed that since the two talkbackers were banned at the same time, and since there was an obvious connection between the two - that they were in fact the same talkbacker. Can he ever come back? I heard the IP address gets banned, not just the account.

I'm convinced he was Orson. The pedantic insanity was virtually identical. I think he decided on a less pretentiously cineastic nickname in order to throw everyone off. So much for that disguise. However, Ringy does have competition in the form of Spidermanfreak20 (who, come to think of it, may actually be Ringy). The guy posted the longest and most anal diatribe I have ever seen, detailing why Pixar's Cars will suck. Check it out in the previous Kevin Smith talkback. It has to be seen to be believed. I just checked that post by Spidermanfreak20. Geezus, you weren't kidding. There is a tone there that is strangely reminiscent of ol' Ringy...I wouldn't be surprised if he's decided on a new visage. (That bit about revealing himself in time killed me.) And Orson is a handle I do recall from reading TBs in the past. But I never payed enough attention to think about comparing the two.
