Those DVD's are real labour of love and it's great to finally discover who is behind them. I do hope Universal will let them make a fine dvd set for King Kong.

Yeah...they could keep that off any future LOTR DVD set and I'd be ok with it. But really, if they add nothing to the actual movies themselves, I'm not interested in forking over money just to have more behind the scenes/wrap party gag reels. Personally, the Kong production diaries interest me...but I watched them on the net already and they're not something I would want to have as repeat viewing. Uni took them off the KiK site in order to spur the sells of what they gave away free. Blah. If they come in the deluxe box set, then cool...if they don't...oh well. Good interview though! Kudos!

There were two moments in DVD documentaries that blew me away this year, like Quint said, Willis O'Brien and his techniques. I had never seen in such detail how the effects for Kong33 were done. It was amazing all the work that went into it, wow great stuff --- The next moment was on the, Fire & Ice DVD. The old VHS copy of the making of Fire & Ice. The only copy in existence that Bakshi still had. The quality is poor, but I think it's the only known existing doc that covers the process of how rotoscope animation is done. It was fascinating to finally see how Bakshi made his movies.

First of all Quint, that was a fine review, thx. And Mr. Pellerin if you read this talkback: I hope that all these funny and hilarious stuff (horse penis etc.) will be released in the future in a "special monster ultimate unrated limited ultra blabla" edition AS LONG AS there will be a stand alone edition (like the Kong diaries on DVD) which you can buy without the LOTR movies. I think i speak not only for myself but many others who already owns the normal or the extended Trilogy box that I am not willing to buy ANOTHER trilogy box just because of new documentary stuff etc. There was already a report from a guy here on aicn about those funny stuff on the set which was special screened somewhere on this planet by Peter Jackson. And since then i really wanted to see them and i hope they will come on DVD with a lower price without the movies.

I think he's saying that rereleases and repackaging of DVD's is inevitable. The studios are going to milk it anyway so why not make sure that each rerelase/repackaging is totally new. That's a good thing, isn't it? Speaking of milking, good to see AICN found yet ANOTHER way to talk about Kong.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they'll be clearanced out before the end of this year -or- some rebate/coupon will be bundled with the KONG DVD set towards them. Someone mentioned on a previous KK TB that they got one for $11 for simply purchasing a KK ticket, so it could happen.

Next Generation LOTR DVDs

... will be Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and will look dramatically better as well as fit on way fewer disks. Furthermore, it's not inconceivable that Jackson will tweak some of the SFX that he has admitted were rushed and less than 100% satisfactory, e.g., the Wargs in TTT. Finally, I could even imagine him re-editing the movies slightly, e.g., there's a flashback sequence of Aragorn and Arwen meeting in Lorien that was cut from FOTR (in favor of the Aragorn-Boromir conversation) and never found its way back in. Given the insane pace that the movies were made at, his second thoughts 5-10 years down the road might actually represent improvements. In short, for those of us who love these movies, there will be multiple reasons to buy the inevitable Anniversary edition. That there will also be new extras is just icing on that cake.
KingKong sucked

...but the Production Diaries are fucking GOLD. King Kong just isn't interesting enough to support itself for 3 hours, especially when one and a half of those hours is a nonstop chase sequence with no breathers or opportunity to suspend disbelief. On the other hand, the production diaries alone justified the existence of the movie. It's like a film school in a box.

Take a look at Hellboy Director's Box for an example of what NOT to do. Aside from a little bit added to the film, the first two discs of the set are the same as the first DVD release. Just some useless extras thrown on a third disc that amount to jack shit. Very disappointing coming from Guillermo Del Toro.

And that is why he is releasing the fourth - or is it fifth or sixth? - version of "Lord of the Rings". Followed by, no doubt, six releases of "King Kong 2005" (and the very special Ultimate Super Anniversary Version set, ultra-limited to 1.000.000 copies per 1 country)
What they need to do with LOTR

Obviously, wait until The Hobbit gets made (you know it will), then put all 4 movies in a massive High-Def set (look...once Blu-ray/HD-DVD really takes off people will be screaming for the movies in HD). The set should include the original theatrical cuts of FOTR, TTT and ROTK in High Definition PLUS all-new cuts with improved effects shots (a lot of CG shots could be improved upon, and they need to replace the old model of Gollum in FOTR with the one we see in TTT and ROTK). The new cuts should be like a comprimise between the theatrical cuts and the extended editions (not as long as the extended cuts) but ALSO should be R-rated and include some scenes that we haven't seen yet such as the Fellowship being chased into Lorien by the Moria orcs, Gil-galad being executed by Sauron, the Prologue etc. Extras for the set should include ALLLLLLLL the deleted scenes that exist (every last fucking one, even if it's a piece of shit. Including alternative scenes like Arwen coming to Helm's Deep). Bloopers for the trilogy (I think a reel for each movie would suffice rather than those actor-specific ones they did for the wrap parties). And...just about everything else that's hanging around. Perhaps Peter's original pitch-reel to New Line, the footage they showed at Cannes, audition tapes (remember, Elijah Wood made his own Frodo audition tape with friends, that would be cool to see). Yes, I think it's definitely worth making and NOT overkill by any means.
Meant to say Epilogue there instead of Prologue

...in the case of something like Lord of the Rings, I thought it really sucked that none of the content from the theatrical cut dvd was included on the extended edition dvds. Hell, I think it's a rip off that they didn't include BOTH cuts on the extended dvd releases. If they'd done their same release plan (theatrical cut first, followed by the extended cut a few months later), that would have been fine... but many fans wanted both versions and instead of just waiting for the longer dvd to come out, they had to buy both releases to get both versions of the movie.
Ya know....

...after...however many years I've beeb coming here, I never stop being amazed at the lack of reading comprehension some people posses...shrug. Hennyway, the Prod. Diaries DVD are rad! I think it would be cool if they released the post set the same way...or both ways, with the movie and seperate, so you could choose. I'll still be buying both of them but would rather have a post set that looks like the first set (see, they spoiled us with the LOTR EE's, yes they did). Also, in case anybody is listening (reading) from New Line, please consider this option for future LOTR "Behind the Scenes" releases as well. Because I agree with the viewer that mentioned not RE-buying these suckers again if there isn't extra movie added. I bought the 2-disc for each and sold it back upon purchasing the 4-disc - I really don't want the movies again....unless they have more footage (which we all know exists...just not "finished"). Lastly, is there a bad ass Heavenly Creatures DVD? I honestly don't know, so I'll go check into that. But if there isn't, I would love that.

I pass through my local DVD stores, even big department stores with audio visual sections, and those production diary box sets are just sitting there. Touched only by the occasional curious passer by who looks at the back and then puts it right back where it was. I asked the head dude if they were selling and he told me lots of people enquire about the box, but they all get that screwed up look on their face when he explains what it actually is. Don't get me wrong, there are hard core Jacksonites who will buy anything. But Jackson and Michael Pellerin, you guys are a little to into yourselves if you think people are actually going to shell out $100 for soemthign which you can get free on-line, or as extra's on the King Kong dvd release. The general consensus is "who the hell do you guys think you are?" and for me personally, I hope this pre-film release box set fails because I DO NOT want to see studio's catching on and filling DVD shops up with, esentially, worthless crap. good job on you're careers though!

I'm living in Europe at the moment and the R2 Production Diary set consists only of the two discs. I bought mine for the equivalent of 11 bucks at the theater that was showing KK. Personally, I don't care for the art, cards and assorted doodads that come along with those high priced sets so the pure disc version of the Production Diaries was definitely something I was willing to pay for. This is also why I bought the "King Kong Collection" box (KK, Son of Kong & Mighty Joe Young) rather than the KK special edition tin. For the same price I could skip the tchochkes and get two extra movies instead.
