When you pick the winners, host them on this site so everyone can watch them. Don't just link to poor schlub's personal website, so it is brought to its knees, before it expires his hosting companies bandwidth and presents him with an overage bill greater than the cost of the prize. And yeah, that is what would have happened, I have been coming here since the 90s. I know that is what would have happened... That said, I look forward to the work of people more talented and less apathetic than I...

Why are dinosaurs always the same shit green color?

Logic dictates that if modern birds evolved from dinosaurs, and if modern birds come in a staggering variety of colors, some of the predatory and scavenging birds especially, then perhaps dinosaurs also had an array of bright patterns. Hell, there's even evidence now that suggest that raptors had rudimentary feathers. Yet, the V-Rex is the color of a baby's diaper. Stephen Jay Gould is fuming in his grave. That said, this sculpture looks awesome.

THAT industrious lil bastard would've tackled this in a heartbeat! Of course, he also would have skipped about four days of school to get it done, shoplifted most of the necessary supplies and continued his track record of disappointing the shit outa his old man by preferring gay-ass movie crap to football and hunting things with guns. Jesus, Harry, what's wrong with you, trying to corrupt my 14-year-old past self like this???? =) Man, I wish I had the time... what a wonderful idea, Harry. Keep this sort of thing going. You're nurturing an element of creative outlet all too under-supported in today's schools. One suggestion -- how about creating categorical contests: one for semi-adult geeks, and another for the kids? Even if you MUST make the cutoff age something like 16, it would give younger fans a better shot, given the better resources to which their elders may have access...

I also think 2 weeks is plently of time to make a quick stop-motion bit. 10 seconds of stop motion is about 2-3 hours of animating (depending on the level of detail your are putting into the animation of course). I'd say that was worth $500 of your time. Plus you'll have your work seen by everyone going to the WETA web-site and AICN web-site for a time. That's built in distribution man!
mortsleam, I believe the logic in coloring large dinosaurs dun..
by 3 Bag Enema
Nov 18th, 2005

...is that we are not used to seeing large animals with bright colors. All large land animals have dull colors, and, since we have no idea how a t-rex might have been colored, the creators follow this logic. That said - who the hell is going to bother with this contest? A)It's easier to just buy the stupid statue and B)Who would want it? When JoBlow.com has a contest like this, all they as is that you submit your freakin' e-mail address!

The Rules question...
by Kraken
Nov 18th, 2005
08:00:27 PM
The basic rules are not going to change. I think what Quint is trying to avoid is someone being able to nit pick and argue creative merit and try to say someone didn't follow the rules because Kong was represented by a bunch of paper clips instead of a clay statue. The rules as far as how long it's suppose to be (10 sec 60 sec) and how to send it in, and that it should be Kong vs something are pretty hard rules. Quint is just trying to reserve creative judgement on the final entries. But I guess if you're at all concerned about it, then don't enter. Honestly, if you don't win, you still got to do something creative. If you're just wanting to do some stop motion "only" to win a prize, then you're probably not the type that should be entering anyway. I think you'd be missing the spirit of this contest. In the spirit of Kong, it's to get people out there unleashing their creativitiy. But if you'd rather spend time complaining in a talkback instead of getting out your clay and figuring out what to make, go ahead. That statue is going to look awesome sitting on the desk of the guy that didn't bother to bitch, but just started being creative.
