Sorry, here's a crappy translation of the text on the website that reads like a fucking haiku poem (sorry if this only causes more confusion) - "In night streets dangerously. We take the force from people. Dark - dark, Light - light. Many centuries between those who is ready on all for the sake of this force, there is a war. And nobody can win. By the way, let me echo the sentiments that I can't believe this is turning into more Whedon bullshit around here. What is it? Nightwatch = Vampires = Buffy = Serenity = Whedon? Let me add one: Whedon = Shut the fuck up. Go back to your retarded Buffy comics thread and leave the real talkbacks to those who are interested. Back on topic, the trailer for Nightwatch had me interested... I just wish it would get released or something, eh?

I saw the trailer for the first movie and was in awe, a THAT cool movie from Russia? No way! I checked it out and I was right, the movie wasn't any good. (Sure it had it's moments). But from what I saw in the trailer, it didn't really fit the movie at all. Huge disappointment.

Nightwatch had a good trailer but I haven't heard many positive things from people who have actually seen the movie. I loved the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie with Paul Reubens hamming it up but I watched one episode of the tv show with all the exuberance of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. If I am reincarneated as a 14-year-old girl maybe then I'll give two shits about what Whedon does but until then I think I'll just continue to not care.

SerenityFan, you're acting like an idiot. Now, do we know if Daywatch is actually Nightwatch 2? If I recall correctly, the whole shebang is made out of three novels (Nightwatch, Daywatch, Duskwatch) with three parts each, and Nightwatch was based only on the first part of the first novel. So is this adapting the second part of the first novel, or the second novel?

I've been waiting to see this movie for about a year now, or however long ago it was that kickass trailer was released on Apple.com. But most people who've seen it seem to think it sucks (besides for Quentin Tarantino), and the fact that Fox keeps pushing back the release date is pretty conspicuous. I hope it's good. Regardless of the reviews, I'll probably end up buying a ticket. Trailers do indeed lie, but that one was just too awesome. 'Daywatch' trailer? Nightwatch is awesome. Based on the first of a trilogy of books (not translated into English). There will be a third in the series after Daywatch. The plot can seem convoluted... especially if you have to wade through the sometimes sparse English translations. But watch this movie two or threee times and you begin to notice what language leaves out... that all the little details start to add up into a meaningful swirl of interconnected events and people. It was fun for me to watch this movie several times as it is visually stunning and the characters are so interesting. Almost every visual is a clue that is connected to something in the past, the future or both. I think the most interesting thing to me was that while events seem to play out according to predestiny, there is always this element of choice and free will that can trip a binary switch and derail a course or a prophesy that may seem inevitable. The freedoms of choices can be manipulated by forces of dark or light and it is intriguing to figure out if this happens to maintain or tip the balance between the two forces. Harry is right, it is impossible to tell how the story will play out and I think it has less to do with language than with nuance.

A friend of mine ordered a copy of the Russian dvd with English subtitles and I watched it with him. I borrowed it and watched it with some of my native Russian friends (I speak a little, but I'm a novice) and they were impressed with it (though we did laugh at how the translations of the profanity got more accurate as the movie progressed). None of us felt that the plot was too convoluted or difficult to follow. Personally, I'm happy that they're releasing more movies in their native language with subtitles, I think it adds a lot more to the overall texture of the film; doubt me? Watch the dubbed version of "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and try not to cringe! Mr. Knowles, you're slowing down, I found this on KinoGovno (literally "movie shit" btw) a few weeks ago. Nov 13th, 2005

The russian text itself has it's flaws and is not wery literate. Anyway.. here is my translation of the text on the website, I hope it will help. The night streets are dangerous. But not because of criminals or maniacs. Those who call themselves "the Others" operate (act) there; they, whose power is great and cannot be challenged by ordinary weapons. "We - Dark and Light - are all "Others". We take our power from people (humans). The Dark take the dark power, the Light take the light power. For many centuries a war goes on among those who are ready for everything to get that power. And nobody is wining. the world stands on an edge."... Therefore the Great Pact (Contract) was made between the Dark ones and the Light ones. But "the Others" are not sinless. They have ignored (broken) the Contract. It was then, that the Light ones created the NightWatch, watching the crimes of the Dark ones, and the Dark ones, in reverse created the DayWatch.

I bought this movie while I was in China over a year ago, watched it there with my russian fiancee...we both really liked it... As to Japanese taking years and years of education to even get a grasp? I don't think so. Somewhat difficult? yeah...that difficult? no. And the language used in comics is simpler than regular "real" language anyway and I bet it uses less characters. Once you get past that, the grammar is pretty straightforward and simple. No different conjugations except for positives / negatives. As for learning the characters. I lived in China studied pretty hard for a couple of months, and learned a lot of characters pretty quickly. It's not that hard. If you can see a picture of a book and know that it's a book, you can learn to see 书 and know that it's a book too. And Chinese grammar is a breeze...the biggest problem are the tones...but it just takes practice. As for Russian...it's pretty complicated, doesn't have as many tense conjugations as european languages, but still has them for the different pronouns, but all of the nouns decline for 6 cases in both the singular and plural, which makes it pretty difficult. And it has a very flexible word order.

The problem with the first film in this russian vampire trilogy is that people are giving it a free pass simply because it's russian. If you would change the language and the actors to american, people would be much, much harder on the film. The thing is, it's not any better than medicre stuff like Underworld or Resident Evil. In fact it's a bit worse, since it lacks the dumb popcorn fun factor that those two had, and it is simply dumb and boring. The whole thing reminds me of the big Hong Kong action craze in the late 80's and early 90's. All the fanboys were jazzed up about how much superior HK flicks were when compared to american ones. But the fact was that there was really only a handful of great HK action flicks at the time, and the rest were either just pretty good, mediocre or crap. People were just giving them free passes and ignoring poor writing, acting and directing. Ignoring how cliched and derivative the films in their own genre. Exotic novelty factor can blind people a lot, when it comes to the actual quality of the film.

the subtitles are frustratingly terrible on the nightwatch import, it takes at the very least 2, most likely 3 viewings to begin to understand just what the hell is going on. it gets especially confusing when it discusses the Great Other as opposed to the normal Others that make up the Nightwatch and Daywatch. problem is connecting words like 'the' and 'a/an' don't exact in Russian, so they just tacked 'the' onto every mention of an Other, and so for a good chunk of the film you're thinking Anton (the main character) is some sort of special someone, as opposed to the Great Other. that being said, once i realized this i really got into Nightwatch, these trailers look fucking awesome, and i can't wait for Russian class on Tuesday so i can ask my professor what the hell they're talking about.

Maybe your reading comprehension skills are not too good. I NEVER SAID that Russia (or Soviet Union) hasn't offered great movies. While I do enjoy and apppreciate popcorn movies, I'm also an arthouse fan. For example Andrei Tarkovksi is one of my favorite filmmakers. You might have heard of him - He was russian. I have seen all of his movies and it's a straight line of 7/10's, 8/10's and 9/10's for me. However, this doesn't mean that ALL russian movies are great. Films should be judged based on their own merits - Not based on what nationality they represent. Nightwatch is not horrible. It's decent. Decent, like mediocre films such as Resident Evil and Underworld.

...don't you think. Considering it's budgetry restraints look at what they made. The film came and went in England, but I managed to catch it and I thought it was fantastic. OK so the effects weren't magnificent at times, but it played to it's strengths and came up trumps in my opinion. And they did some cool things with the subtitles (when does anyone ever notice the subtitles?) As for Paul W.S. Anderson, how on earth does this crap peddler keep on getting budgets? He's an awful director and an even worse writer, only he could have made AVP look like Fraggles having a hissy fit and destroyed both franchises with one stroke of his faeces coated pen.

I'm not really judging the effects of Nightwatch. I agree that that they milked their budget pretty much for all it was worth. Then again, you can ask if it's really necessary to fill a movie with CGI, if you can't keep a constant quality. How about doing 10 great CGI shots instead of 100 sloppy ones? I find it interesting that people always bithch about overdone CGI in american movies, but somehow it suddenly becomes accetable when the film is russian. Why is that? But anyway, my biggest problem with the film is the script. It's rather poorly and sloppily written. And you don't need millions to write a good script. In fact when you don't have much money, you should put extra effort into the script. Why is it that american action movies are always critizised when the script is sloppy, but with a Russian film it's suddenly accetable? And Nightwatch is extremely cliched and derivative. Why is that accetable for a russian movie, since it's not accetable for american movies? Replace the russian actors, russian language and russian locations with american ones, and you get an american B-class action movie.

I see what you mean about the Russian/American issue, and I'm not going to defend Nightwatch because it's Russian. I agree with you there that to defend it because it's a foreign film would be a double standard. I didn't think the script was that bad, but in hindsight I have to admit I wasn't focussin massively on it. I think though, that the camerawork was inventive and yes in someways it was derivative (which it nods at with the Buffy reference) but it bought a little slant to to it, just tweaked the vampire mythos just a little. The setting provided a great deal of the atmosphere too the butcher's the cramped flats, the abandoned warehouses all lending themselves to the story effectively. Lastly on the American/Russian thing...maybe it's more noticeable in American films because American films do set the bar so high at times with their effects. Compare the CGI in say Star Wars with the woeful CGI in The Brothers Grimm (that's just me playing Devil's advocate)

Got my hands on a bunch of free tix, and we all agreed that it was somewhat interesting but overall a pretty average movie. There's just nothing in it to make it special. Comparing it with Resident Evil, Underworld etc is only halfway to decribing it -- it has a different feel, less action and it's a little less shoddy. Overall, it was a mediocre movie. I can see some comics fanboys and geeks loving the hell out of it, but it's got a very small audience in the West as far as I can see

I don't really mind about other people liking Nightwatch. It has some obvious redeeming qualities to it, and I have myself liked a lot of films most don't like at all, so I have no problem having it both ways. Taste is subjective. I'm just aggravated by double standards, but it doesn't seem you are using them. And there is at least one important thing this trilogy is doing: The russian film industry is growing at increasing speed, and films like these are certainly helping it a great deal. They bring in the money that will get much more films greenlighted, and eventually it results to a lot of films I will enjoy as much as some people have enjoyed Nightwatch. So all the props for them. It's a struggle to get any film made in the first place, so the makers of this succesful gamble get my respect, despite the fact that I wasn't able to get the kicks out of the final result.

If you're a fan of sci fi/fantasy in general, then Nightwatch is a fantastic movie. The effects weren't as smooth as I had hoped, but for the budget, no complaints. I saw a DVD and the subtitles weren't fantastic, but I got the gist and doing FIVE minutes of research on the IMDB boards explained what questions I had AND gave me background on the series overall. So don't bit$h on the movie just cause you're too lazy to click a few links and figure it out. Can't wait for DW and can't wait for those novels to get translated (apparently in the books the boy is not his son and it's less sure whether he really is the Great One).

"Replace the russian actors, russian language and russian locations with american ones, and you get an american B-class action movie." --- Thay may be true (though I DON'T believe it), but the fact is, they're NOT American actors/locations/etc., and that makes a WORLD of difference. I'm from Croatia, which is in Middle Europe, and relatively close to the Old Vampire Countries. You wouldn't BELIEVE how much more convincing dark creatures of the night are in Moscow, a city that was ancient when Columbus was sucking his momma's tit, than in (pardon me) fucking Vancouver.
