Judging from the talkbacks, it may seem like your AFI reviews are falling on deaf ears. Probably because there's no mention of Siths or giant apes. But I, for one, appreciate hearing your opinion on what I consider two of the best films of the year (Tsotsi and Tristram Shandy). I guarantee that when Tsotsi comes out in March, the same people who've been offering such astute commentary as "Who cares?" will be the first ones on the bandwagon.

I've seen Brydon in a few things, like this year's MIRRORMASK, but you're right... for the most part, he's totally unfamiliar to American audiences. I think TRISTRAM SHANDY might change that to a degree, since he and Coogan have such great chemistry in the film. The ongoing thing about Rob's teeth, for example, or about Coogan's shoes. But the sort of jokey ha ha stuff in TRISTRAM SHANDY isn't what made it most interesting for me, so, you're right again, it's not what I wrote about.
Shit. I felt the same way about The Aristocrats.

I REALLY wanted to love it but I thought it was so-so. I hated the fact that they built up and built up this Gilbert Gotfried version of the joke, then when they finally show it, they don't play it all the way through. They keep cutting away to sing his praises. Dude, SHOW THE CLIP! And on top of that, I thought the one-joke premise outstayed its welcome.

I loved the last bit where his daughter's endless repeating "Why?" deconstructs the conversation into an abstract discussion of existentialism. "Why?" "Because NOTHING can't BE!" You can still watch it on HBO ON DEMAND.

Just kidding. I think it's kind of an absurd masterpiece, but I can definitely understand irritation.

Living in Oblivion said absolutely nothing insightful about movie making. It was like it was made by someone who'd never actually made a movie before and based all the observations on things he'd read in People. Tristram Shandy, on the other hand, is really perceptive.

And Tristram Shandy contains that pitiful little prick Steve Coogan so it'll get an audience of 7 people. How on earth did he become a film actor?? He's as unlikeable as the 'new' Tom Cruise.
And do you know where "FUCK" originated? From the Puritans

Yup, the Puritans. Remember how in "The Scarlet Letter" that Hester was made to wear the red "A" for adultery? Well something a lot like that happened in real life. If someone in a Puritan community was found in an adulterous relationship, he/she was forced to wear a sign around their necks with the letters "F.U.C.K." printed on it. This was an acronym meaning "For Unclean Carnal Knowledge". Everyone in the village knew it. Little Puritan boys and girls would tease the miscreant about being "caught fucking". It's an almost 400-year old word that began with the original hellfire-and-brimstone Bible believers. Remember that the next time you ever read a Jonathan Edwards sermon :-)
FUCK did not come from the Puritans.

Like many other supposed acronym origins of the word fuck, this one is pure bullshit. http://www.snopes.com/language /acronyms/fuck.htm

Okay, I've never heard of this movie. All I know about it is from what I just read in this article. But I'm already casting my Oscar ballad to nominate "FUCK" as the most pretentious piece of shit of the year............... Oooh, we're controversial! That's right, society! You can't handle it, can you!? We're breaking down all the walls! Oooooohhhh!!!

I saw Tristram Shandy yesterday at the Denver International Film Festival. Those first two sentances of Moriarty's review sum up exactly how I felt about the film. I went to Tristram Shandy because I'm a Steve Coogan fan from "I'm Alan Partidge" and didn't really know much about it except that Steve Coogan played both himself and Tristram. The bit about Rob Brydon's teeth and the scene about the hot chestnut were hillarious, but I agree with Moriarty: that's not what made the movie interesting for me. I'll definitely have to see it again when it comes out...if it comes out. I haven't heard anything about a positive US release date, and I don't even know if they have a distributor yet.

....but I would never say he had shit on Bill Hicks. Sure, he set the standard for Hicks, but Hicks surpassed him in every way, comedically, intellectually and controversially. So I reckon anyway. Bruce would have meant more to me had I lived in uptight 60's America, but alas I didn't and he doesn't.

also, Bruce's material was sharper and he was much more of an observer. as much as i think Hicks is a riot (particularly because his [also dated] topical humor is much closer to me than Bruce's), Hicks is a sledgehammer to Bruce's scalpel.
