And no I'm not a racist guy who is oblivious to the fact that rap music is ruling the charts. But there are plenty of talented black actors out there. The logical choice is casting the unemployed Michael Jai White, especially since he is proficient in martial arts. Casting a lame washed up rapper like Sticky Fingaz is the worst casting. I know many rapper actors have turned in good performances (LL, Ludacris, Eve) But often times you get Halloween Resurrection where Bus a Bus aka Busta Rhymes Karate Kicked Michael Myers and thus made a mockery of the franchise. I don't like this at all. And will he get his lazy eye fixed already?

A TV series continuing a movie story that was pretty well concluded ad nauseum. Then again, Highlander ran like 30 seasons so I guess that's a good thing. Didn't Snipes whine that he wasn't in Trinity enough? Give it to him. His films are pretty much straight to video now anyway.

I wouldn't exactly call rap a trend anymore...if it's been in play for about 2 decades, it's officially part of the culture, big guy. They've been calling it a fad since its inception, and it hasn't fallen yet. I'll sit back and see how Mr. Fingaz fares in the first ep.

If you have seen him in anything, he is a better actor than he is rapper, and to be honest if they lose Blade's High-Fade than he could be a much more serious/badass blade than snipes ever was. And as for Rapper actors... You think all those guys are drug dealers and murderers who are also saavy enough to have a career in rap and not get arrested for their previous crimes that they more or less confess to on albums? Or is it more likely that many of them are just playing a role of this tough gangster when most of the time they were working on their poetry and listening to music as they were growing up...

FX will not renew Over There for a second season based on the series' ratings performance over its 13-epsiode run. Released by FX FX will not renew Over There for a second season based on the series' ratings performance over its 13-epsiode run. (Please see ratings information below). Statement from John Landgraf, President and General Manager of FX Networks "I'm deeply proud of Over There, which was beautifully produced, acted, written and directed. The series was arguably the most critically acclaimed new television show of the year, a fact which made the decision not to renew it all the more difficult. That decision was motivated entirely by Over There's ratings performance and our belief that the numbers were reflective of what the show is about, rather than its quality or entertainment value. While are passionately committed to fostering great television, we are an advertiser supported network and the size of our audience is vital to our bottom line. "It was a deeply gratifying experience for everyone at FX to work with Steven Bochco, Chris Gerolmo and their immensely talented and dedicated team of collaborators, whose artistry was reflected in each episode." RATINGS INFORMATION - For its 13-week run (Wednesdays, 10 PM ET/PT), Over There averaged 2.1 million total viewers and 1.3 million Adults 18-49. - Over There enjoyed a very strong premiere with 4.1 million total viewers and 2.4 million Adults 18-49. - Over There leveled off to an average of 2.1 million viewers and 1.3 million Adults 18-49 for episodes 2-9. - Over There then began a steady decline, eventually bottoming out at 1.35 million viewers and 882,000 for the season finale. - Over its final four episodes, Over There averaged 1.6 million total viewers and 990,000 Adults 18-49. - In comparison to FX's other drama series (most recent/current season): Nip/Tuck is averaging 4.1 million total viewers and 2.9 million Adults 18-49 (#1 in basic cable on A18-49) The Shield averaged 3.2 million total viewers and 2.0 million Adults 18-49 Rescue Me averaged 2.8 million total viewers and 1.8 million Adults 18-49

Modern rap is NOTHING like 80s rap, so don't even TRY to say they're related. 80's rap is already dated and silly-sounding. The modern version of hip-hop is nowhere near 20 years old. Try about 10, instead. We can trace it to Public Enemy & NWA in the early 90s. I don't see ANYBODY wandering around rapping "The Message" these days. I don't seen ANY love for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and there's very little attention paid to Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, and the Fat Boys' contributions to rap. Rev Run just put out a CD, but it's not exactly flyin' off the shelf. The only Run DMC anybody EVER hears is "Walk This Way." Trying to connect old school rap to modern hip-hop is like a Slipknot fan trying to connect modern rock with the progressive rock of the 70s. Sure, there are some minor similarities (and rip-offs) but the two are in no way identical.

That was my thought on the other Blade related TalkBacks. Same goes for Brian J. White (Tavon from *The Shield*) who is a martial artist in real life. I haven't seen enough of this "Sticky FIngaz" gentleman to have an opinion but please, would people stop saying Michael Jai White? I mean I liked him in his scene that was cut out of Kill Bill as much as the next guy but he is not the be all and end all of black action heroes. I guess he was okay in EXIT WOUNDS but he's no Wesley Snipes. Not just because he's not as good of an actor but he just doesn't have the charisma or the presence. Plus, he was in another comic strip adaptation, this movie called "Spawn" where he wears a rubber halloween costume and fights against an evil farting midget clown from hell. I might have actually imagined that one but if not I would say that was a point against him. Anyway my final point is this. Somebody said this guy didn't look enough like Wesley. To me, it is important that you don't just have some guy dressed up as Wesley with a fade and sunglasses. If that happens there is no possible way to take it seriously. I mean it's probaly not gonna be good anyway so I shouldn't worry about it but on the off chance it's gonna work, it's gonna be by establishing its own identity separately from the movies and not just being an hour long low budget straight to video Blade sequel with different actors who aren't allowed to say "motherfucker" because it's TV.

In the movies, Blade is a cipher and doesn't exude much personality at all. (Perhaps that's the point, and not anything negative about Snipes' performance of the character.) But maybe in the series the producers want to focus more on character development and expansion for Blade himself. So perhaps they looked more for an actor who had the acting chops to deliver, and not someone who just had the martial arts skills.

The Difference Between Blade and Buffy in Film
by KenKRK
Nov 7th, 2005
03:02:57 PM
The Blade movies were actually successful. And there was more than one of them, so obviously, there was an audience who enjoyed the character in film. Buffy the movie was a campy and forgettable flop that most of those actors probably cross off their resumes. People watching that series more than likely forgot about the film, whereas Blade has proven to be a far more memorable character. Clearly the majority of talkbackers were hoping for something like the movies, even saying that they should just cast Wesley, which would be plausible if him AND New Line didn't screw each other over. Blade in film form is practically more revered than comic Blade.

Supposedly this will be set after Trinity and if that is the case ugh. Trinity was basically an intro to the Nightstalkers. The only thing that made it a Blade movie was the fact Blade was in it. It'll be the same crap as usual. Blade meets girl in first episode they'll hate each other at first until he has to rescue her. The fake sexual tension will be a pathetic attempt at a "selling point." He'll be fighting some Euro-trash vampire every week or more accurately his "minions" while attempting to stop some lame-ass plan to turn the whole world into vampires. It'll last 13 episodes and we'll never know how it ends and more importantly we won't care.

Stop bitchin and write your congressman or something constructive that gets more black actors in films. More black actors=a better chance at casting a black actor with talent.

why not just get it into an animated show. I'm sure they can do something like that Spawn cartoon that HBO had. And FX gets away with saying shit, asshole, and dick so they wouldn't have to PG it too much. I don't think Snipes wants anything to do with the Blade property since Goyer practically wrote him out of Trinity and instead made a movie about the supporting characters, leaving nothing but a couple of menacing stares and kicking a little ass here and there.

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. This is afterall a Hollywood industry that left charismatic black talent like Terrence Howard out in the cold for years as they rushed to go after such thespians as DMX. That trend had appeared to be turning around for the better but I guess there are always idiots like Goyer around to go that route. Hell, we all know Goyer doesn't care about Blade anyway. Just check out that third movie. I'm sure Goyer will cast some pretty white boy as a siekick and that that dude will probably get all the women and all the true interesting storylines. Blade will be relegated to an afterthought on his own show and get a bunch of stupid lines to spout. Fuck Goyer. What a joke that on the credits we are actually going to see the "name" Sticky Fingaz. What was that moron thinking? Oh and GiftedInYourOwnMind, will you PLEASE stop your annoying rants about rap music that has nothing to do with this topic? I hate to break it to you but rap/hip-hop has been around since the late 70s. When Run DMC became an MTV regular in the mid 80s people back then kept saying rap was a fad and wouldn't last much longer. Wrong. Its still here and frankly it doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon. Disco was a fad. Grunge was a fad. I can argue that punk rock was a fad. Rap though isn't. So just deal with it. Yeah, it isn't my favorite music either but neither is country music and that has been around forever.

I just want to say that it warms my heart that people are still using that "rap is only a fad" argument that they were using when I was a teenager in the late '80s and early '90s. The more things change, the more they stay the same. You even have to explain that 50 Cent is only a commercial product and not a representation of the true art of hip hop. Back then we had to explain MC Hammer. I mean, it was 1989 when DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince won the first rap Grammy. Since then the guy has gone on to get married, have kids, have a long running sitcom, do many huge blockbuster terrible movies, and get nominated for an Oscar. I'm pretty sure pet rocks and the Macarena were not able to go through that many career phases. And if I had to guess your age, I would say that you were either a baby or not even born at the time when rap became mainstream and people first started to say it was only a fad, "like disco." Making that argument more than 15 years later is so preposterous as to be adorable. You are officially in the Flat Earth Society. And God bless you for sharing your views with us.

i often am tempted to post here but i'm too lazy to look up my impossible to remember password. but i just needed to say something here. there are maybe two people in this talkback that know what they are talking about. Why? because black people aren't little insecure white suburbanites that need to go online to prove shit. if i showed this thread to my roomates freshman year they woudl laugh their asses off and your pathetic attempt at explaining rap culture...everything you need to know about rap or an individual rap artist can be found in the lyrics of the songs... PERIOD. you can't make sweeping generalizations at all, and in doing so you just prove your ignorance...........also, by talking shit on the actor cast to play blade you make a complete ass of yourself. Smoke was easily one of the most intriguing characters on Over There. If you say he doesn't deserve the role you obviously didn't watch the show, period. He tackled very complex issues such as racism, the media and the purpose of the war with impressive believability. Never was he preachy, but never was he too ghetto to be taken seriously... he was a guy...........THIS is why rap artists often become actors.... because its true that black actors just aren't given the same amount of shots, but rap is one part of the entertainment industry that is not dominated by white people. so don't go bitching when the only people that are given a shot are rap artists... at least these musicians have something arguably real to talk about (at least realer than suburban kids whining about the same fucking girl that stomped on their hearts, with distortion.)...............bas ically, the fact that this guy was cast actually makes me excited for this show.... he did great in over there..... so did angel.... (ps: i am blown away by abc--they should be ashamed of their SHAMELESS way of handling the black family in the neighborhood--the season finale ends hinting at a real controversial sub-plot dealing with real issues, what do we get--crazy ass black criminals....unbeleivable.)

Which would make your "rap is a fad" argument even funnier. On the other hand, it would be funny if you were over 13 and writing posts that retarded. Sorry to hijack this talkback, but this show really needs to have one. Anyway... Instead of Blade, there are more deserving supers out there who should get a tv show... Batman (a drama, sorta Law and Order SVU)... Deadpool (storyline could be he's doing his hits, and there are a set of cops trying to bring him down)... Hell, "Aquaman: The Musical" would be more entertaining...

I am indifferent to rap...I hardly ever listen to the radio or watch MTV so I never really get a chance to listen to it...but I have a problem with people calling rapper musicians...I mean I play guitar in a band...and when I think of musicians I think of someone who plays an instrument...vocalists also apply because for the most part they are singing in a certain key...rappers, in my opinion, do not sing, let alone in any key, not to say that they are not talented...they are...I usually use the term rap artist...I personally believe it is more applicable...I am sure others disagree with my assessment, but I figured I would offer it out there...keep in mind that that the rappers don't generally create their own "beats", that is done by the producer...they simply rhyme over it.

He did an okay job, like I said, solid, but he didn't have much of a screen presence, nor did he in any way stand out compared to some of the other actors on the show. Plus he had the advantage of being well cast to boot as fitting into said role. Truth is though he just doesn't have much in the way of charisma, nor did he show very much in the way of acting range whatsoever. Given all that I think he's a bad choice. He can do an okay job cast in the right role, but as a lead in a role that'll clearly demand a greater range of him, I think he's way out of his depth, at least given what I've seen. Personally I think they should have cast Eamonn Walker from Oz and the recent Lord Of War. He would have been perfect. He has the look, the charisma, and he can actually act. There are others that could pull it off, but Eamonn Walker definitely would have been my first choice.

But i don't buy him as Blade. Blade doesn't hardly speak ,just gets the job done all serious like, thats part of what makes him who he is. Read anything with Blade in it and he's always got someone around doing all of the talking, asking him "why not loosen up some time" But Blade's all business. I bet there are a million black actors out there with the build and look not to mention acting skills to play Blade. To me this guy just really ,really does not look like Blade. They should have cast Isaiah Washington like a couple of other people posted, shit i bet Snipes would have done a cable tv series in a heart beat.

Well let me tell you....he should.....b/c these last string of straight to video movies have sucked proverbial schlong!!!! And to add the final nail into his already dead career...get this.....he has a movie (again, straight to video) with none other than Jean Claude Van Damme!! Rappin' on

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't hip-hop a more accurate term than rap? Rap is something you do, not necessarily a genre of music (at least not anymore). Leaving aside arguments about which is more musical, calling someone a rapper is like calling someone a singer. As in 'I don't much care for -singing- music'. If rapping is the act of speaking words to a rhythm, mainstream rock bands and white boy bands 'rap' too. That's what shows it's not a 'fad' - it's been absorbed into the mainstream. Even though I'm not a hip-hop fan, I can certainly appreciate the artistry possible (especially if it's good poetry, rhythmic and socially relevant). It's just a different talent than singing. And kudos to the poster that noted that hip hop artists are already actors. Good point. But I'd argue that, rather, they are performers rather than actors. The performance aspect in that they take on a persona, but that may or may not translate to the more specific skills of acting. (in other words acting is a subgroup of performing). Haven't seen Over There and I'm unfamiliar with this guy, so none of this is a statement about him. Just hope the show does something interesting. On another note, vaguely related to vampires, has anyone heard that Dresden Files show for Sci-Fi has cast its lead, and it's not James Marsters, but the guy who played the British villain on 24 (season 3)?
Why do people keep saying Isaiah Washington?

He's a great actor but I can't figure out why he would even occur to somebody as Blade. He also doesn't "look like Blade," he doesn't have a super hero build, and I can't remember him ever doing an action scene even while playing a cop and co-starring with Steven Seagal and Jet Li. I mean maybe you got something different in mind, and didn't they originally think of casting Denzel in the movie? But I'm surprised his name keeps coming up because he would be such a weird choice. Wouldn't he look goofy doing martial arts? Still, anything to help Isaiah, 'cause it was sad seeing the poor bastard in Wild Things 2.

Or do Whedon's zombies have some way of searching every post for the words Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity and Browncoat so they can just pop in, act stupid without reading what was actually posted and then fade away? Here's a hint, jackass...there was a movie BEFORE there was a series, which is why the name came up in this talkback in the first place. Well, that and the obvious plot similarities. Either way, the Buffy movie was ass. Joss' big screen record sucks and you need a healthier hobby.

SerenityFan, this could be why people get angry at Joss fans - you jumped on something without reading it closely. You left out the crucial part of that quote - the two words: the movie. Which I agree - was a terrible flop that most of the actors would rather forget. Remember that Hillary Swank and Ben Affleck had walk on roles. Don't think they list it on their resumes. The tv show is a whole other story - that pretty much made everyone's careers. Well, except for Alyson Hannigan, who had a pretty strong thing with the American Pie movies.
Roland, you posted while I was typing.

Don't forget, Joss only wrote the movie, didn't direct it. And they made crucial changes against his will. Let's be clear, up until Serenity, Joss didn't have a big-screen record, at least not directing-wise. He was either a script-doctor or had his scripts mangled by directors (besides Buffy, the oft-mocked (even by Joss)Alien Resurrection).

I try to be open to all types of music as long as it sounds good. I'm very much into hip hop, soul, soundtrack tunes. I don't really feel rock music all that much, but still i'd be stupid to say that 'rock sucks', simply because there are a lot of good rock songs. Every now and then, i'll hear something in that genre that will really impress me. examples: Garden State soundtrack, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, "Rock Is Dead" and "Fight Song" by Marilyn Manson (i can't stand the rest of the stuff i've heard from him). So if you want to cut off an entire genre, then go ahead. Its funny, but the only person getting pwned at the end of the day is you.

wow...that is some serious conviction. But on another note, Why does everyone shit on goyer so much? Yeah Blade trinity wasn't great, or even good for that matter. But some of you folks act like he's the bane in your existence. I've even seen some people say they love Batman Begins but they hate all of the "david goyer" stuff in it. Whatever that means. I dunno if this TV show is going to be any good. But if it weren't for Goyer, there would be no Blade franchise in the first place. I read Blade when he was in the Tomb of Dracula comics. He had a green goggles, and afro, and a red jacket with a bandolier of stakes. I would have never thought that character would have gotten his own film, let alone a franchise. For all of his directing faults, Goyer must be doing something right.

...he could act, he had talent to spare, plenty of charisma and a damn good screen presence - I wonder if his constant insistence on doing action films like Drop Zone, Art Of War and yes, even Blade when he should have been trying to give Denzel a run for his money has probably hurt him more than he thought - though apparently another reason was that he was a total wanker on set. Either way, it's a shame to see what he's been reduced to.

...are you saying that there were no problems with the Buffy script, oisin? And I've heard Joss' "the studio ruined it" explanation for Alien: Ressurection, but he claims they really only monkeyed with his third act. Aside from the brief bits of character demonstrated by the pirates (all of which were pretty much cryogenically preserved and warmed over to make the crew of the Serenity), that entire movie sucked from frame one. One doesn't need to be a director to establish a big screen record, and Joss - whose been doctoring scripts for quite some time - has established a rather spotty one at best. All of that said, I thoroughly enjoyed most of the man's TV work. I just get annoyed with folks who claim he can do no wrong and rabidly attack anyone who suggests otherwise.
