A DreamWorks Success

Ummmm, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN has made over 175 million dollars, and is likely to gross over 200 million domestically. Deep Impact made over 100 million. And for all the 'bad' reviews, SMALL SOLDIERS made money, and the toys did ok. And ANTZ should do pretty good. PEACEMAKER made money, AMISTAD fell on it's face though. DUDE

The scooper mentions a forthcoming project called "SPIRIT." Anyone know if this is based on the Will Eisner comic strip? (It just screams out for the animation treatment!)

So far Dreamworks is leading the buzz for the Oscars with TWO films. SPR and the up and coming Prince of Egypt. Hey, you wanna blast a studio? Take a look at Warner Brs. or Universal's entries this year.
Jack n' Rose comment -- HAHAHA

Let me get this straight. Jack n' Rose weren't teeny-boppers? They were full-fledged adults and were having a mature relationship? Oh PUH-LEEZE!! What are you -- 12, 13? For you, public displays of affection (BKA "suckface in the lockers") between high school seniors is a mature display of affection. DiCaprio cannot credibly play a part that calls for him to be in his 20s. Like Michael J. Fox, he'll be playing teenagers well into his third and forth decades. You people just slaaay me.

That has got to be the most astoundingly well illustrated and characteristically acurate animated heroine I have seen in a long time. (translation: **** she is hot!) Can it be that someone has stepped in to fight for my loyalties along side Belle, Ariel and Mulan?! Looks good, and boy do I want to see her move!
El Dorado Shocking News!!!!!!!

They Stole My Idea!!!!!!! I have in my hands the script I so lovenly wrote oh so many weeks ago.......it is titled "El Dorito" and tells the epic love story of an obese, red-headed, Hollywood suck up and his artificially cheese flavored corn chip. we were thinking about doing it live-action.......but concluded that there was no way in hell we could cast the fat turd in real life without exceeding our $123.00 budget. That buys you only so many pork rinds and twinkies. The budget is better spent trying to CGI the whole damn thing. We went to ILM first.......but they were too busy working on things that have already been done. Screw that Frankenstein/Wolfman thing.......that's only interesting to people who have no new ideas or an IMAGINATION. So.....we went to Dreamworks and asked them what they could do with $123.00 and our script. What they did is take our treatment and raped it, turning it into some "lost city of gold-aztec indian epic love story." I smell a lawsuit.......or is that a 16mm showing, backyard bologna fry deep-in-a-hearta Austin, TX?
Frazetta is god, note to Jive-T

Agreed, Frazetta's the man- you cannot expect any animation to compare to his paintings. I think the reviewer meant that the art is similar to the females in Fire and Ice, which Frazetta worked on, and which this does vaguely remind me of. I'll need to see her move before I can really compare, however. I do think the Vaughn Bode comparison is fairly accurate. -JCoM
Dreamworks is barely 4 years old!!

It's first film came out just a year ago! As a newly founded studio it is doing EXTREMELY well. Possibly 5 straight blockbusters(Deep Impact,SPR,Antz,POE, and El Dorado). When Warner Bros.,Universal,Paramount, etc were created did they have this kind of success barely a year after their first film came out. I think not!! Dreamworks will succeed. Geffen is one of the richest and most successful music producers in the world. Katzenburg is a genius at creating magnificent animated films. Spielberg is...well...do I need to say anything. All I am trying to say just because Amistad and Peacemaker were modest successes doesn't mean the studio is going to disappear like Orion. If SPR,POE, and Antz are any indication Dreamworks is going to be around for a looong time. bye

With a billion stars lighting the void of space, dozens of the Old Republic's war ships came out of hyperspace in the Alderaan star system with the Kataana fleet acting as a rear guard. The Hutt spies had warned that a Nimoudian invasion of Alderaan was imminent, but no one knew just when this invasion would occur. The exalted Senator Bail Organa summoned this fleet as a means to discourage an armada of Nimoudian cruisers that were cautiously preparing for their destined invasion of Naboo palace on Alderaan. Several hundred star fighters poured out of the bellies of the Old Republic's war ships and these sleek fighters began to swarm around the atmosphere of Alderaan. While this was an awesome display of the Republic's power, nothing could stop the Nimoudian invasion of Alderaan . . . The regal Padme Amidala gazed into the vastness of Alderaan's dark-blue skies from a grand balcony, which gently rested on the outer walls of Naboo. She dreamt of adventures on exotic star systems as a member of the noble Jedi Knights. The Force flowed strongly in her blood and she wished to develop her powers to their full potential. Padme considered her life to be quite boring and patiently waited for her destiny to find her. A blue R2 astromech droid approached her from behind and told her it was time for her evening meditations . . . During the middle of the night while Padme slept, the Nimoudian invasion fleet hyperspaced into the Alderaan system. Nimoudian fighters sprang from the hangers of the Nimoudian cruisers and engaged the Old Republic's fleet in a spectacular space battle. Soon the defenses of Alderaan were smashed and the Nimoudian strike force headed for Naboo palace located in the heart of Alderaan. Padme barely escaped from the attack with her entourage and headed for the safety of the remote world of Tatooine . . . Anakin Skywalker was a young boy who dreamed of grand adventures. While he stared into the setting twin suns that warmed his modest surroundings, he knew that his true destiny was yet to come. Life was harsh and cruel, but he had growned accustomed to it. Anakin levitated several small rocks with a power that he did not fully understand. His mother called out for him telling him that it was time for bed. With his concentration broke, the small rocks fell back to the ground and Anakin turned and headed for the shelter of his home. To pass the many hours away, Anakin continued to work on his pet project of building a working silver protocol droid from scattered parts that he had found . . . The unassuming Palpatine was a member of the Galactic Senate and was one of the most trusted and admired of the Republic's leaders. Senator Tarkin mused to Palpatine that the glory days of the Old Republic were long gone and that the fatted and corrupt bureaucracy and politicians might cause the end of all that had been built over countless generations. Palpatine knew he must act to put an end to the evil corruptions that plagued the galaxy . . . The young Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi, had trained diligently under Yoda and had become a respected member of the noble Jedi Knights. With his latest rounds of Jedi training now complete, Obi-Wan headed to Tatooine to visit his brother, Owen, and Owen's wife, Beru Skywalker. On his way to find parts to build his protocol droid, Anakin stumbled through the sandstorm and heard the roar of a large star cruiser in the distance. Anakin stealthly approached this ship and admired its beauty. Suddenly, a caped individual jumped out of the shadows at Anakin. With reflexive skill, Anakin used the Force to repel this attacker. The Force sent the attacker flying through the air. The attacker landed with a thud. Anakin carefully approached his attacker and learned that it was in fact Qui-Gon Jinn, a Jedi Master, who was hiding Padme Amidala from the Nimoudians. The Force was a mysterious entity that few understood and even few could master. Few understood the mysteries of the Force and many were distrustful to those who used its power for good and evil as Jedi Knights or Sith Lords. While the Jedi were the most well-known and respected followers of the Force. They were by no means its only followers. Literally thousands of various religious sects, cults and temples existed, scattered all-throughout the Republic, which each had their own unique interpretation of the Force. Some followed the teachings of the light side while others worshiped the twisted ways of the dark side. The light side of the Force only called upon a destined few to summon its immense powers. Unfortunately, some of these destined few would fall victim to the powerful temptations of the dark side. While fleeing Naboo palace, Qui-Gon had to push Padme's royal cruiser to its limits. By the time they had made it to Tatooine, the cruiser had become useless. They were barely able to land the craft on Tatooine. Qui-Gon needed to find someone to take them to Coruscant so that Padme and Qui-Gon could seek the Jedi Council and Galactic Senate's help in removing the Nimoudian invaders from Alderaan. Anakin told Qui-Gon that he could find an adequate pilot and freighter in a nearby city called Mos Espa. Anakin invited Qui-Gon and Padme to watch him participate in one of Jabba the Hutt's pod races. They accepted Anakin's offer . . . In his familiar looking Corellian freighter, Obi-Wan docked at the Mos Espa spaceport with his trusty sidekick, Jar Jar Binks. Jar Jar spoke in a very strange and alien dialect that only Obi-Wan and a few others understood. Kenobi met with Owen at one of the local cantinas. The corrupt and slothful nature of the Republic's ruling elite and its bureacracy irritated Palpatine. Palpatine constantly argued in the Senate that the Republic was foolish for relying so heavily on the Jedi for protection. Palpatine wanted the Republic to greatly increase the size, sophistication and prowess of the naval fleet. However, since the Jedi had successfully protected the Republic for over 1,000 generations, the majority of the Senate considered Palpatine to be an over-zealous, newly-elected member. The Nimoudians became a great thorn in the Republic's side by disrupting Republic trade routes and by raiding and pirating Republic star systems. There was much outrage and discord among the representatives of the pillaged star systems; but the Senate refused to act on the pleas of the more power-hungry senators, including Palpatine, that the Republic must declare an all-out war on the Mandalorian. However, the recent invasion of Alderaan by the Nimoudians made many in the senate fearful of what was to occur next . . . Palpatine realized that the incompetent and fatted leaders of the Republic did not have the courage to return the Republic to the zenith of its glory days. Something had to be done to save the Republic from the incompetence of the ruling elite and Palpatine firmly believed it was his destiny to lead the Republic to a new and unprecedented level of honor and prestige. Palpatine sensed that one of the keys to achieving his objectives was a mastery of the Force. Qui-Gon told Anakin that he and Padme would be heading into Mos Espa and would meet up with Anakin in time for the pod race. Anakin was happy to have made these new friends and headed back home to tell his mother, Shmi, of his good fortune. At home, Anakin put the finishing touches on his silver protocol droid and powered it up. The droid came to life and was startled at his surroundings. The droid told Anakin that his name was C3PO. After finishing his meal, Shmi, Anakin and his new droid C3PO headed towards Mos Espa in a land speeder . . . By ordering the destruction of an unarmed Republic science-research space station, a nefarious and high-ranking member of the Senate framed the Nimoudians and hoped this incident would spark a galactic-wide war. However, the leaders of the Republic were too frightened by the prospects of yet another protracted galactic war. Instead, the Republic sent ambassadors to the Nimoudian home world to seek a negotiated peace. Various evil agents in the Republic government plotted to sabotage these negotiations . . . After he returned home, Palpatine's fiancee was glad to see her handsome Palpatine. Little did she know that she was in love with a man who in just a few decades would have the blood of billions on his hands While the peace talks were underway and making progress, traitors in the Senate hired a group of nefarious, renegade mercenaries to assassinate both the Republic and Nimoudian ambassadors. The mercenaries succeeded in killing both-sides ambassadors. The Nimoudian leaders were outraged by the Republic's apparent deceit; likewise, the Republic leaders were outraged. Tremendous fighting broke out between the Nimoudians and the Republic forces in the Nimoudian star system. It appeared that the seeds for the next galactic-wide war had been sowed. The politically-ambitious Tarkin secretly approached others about forming an alliance with the evil Sith Lords . . . Anakin and C3PO met up with Qui-Gon and Padme outside of a local establishment located in Mos Espa. The group then went to the pod race. At the race, Anakin took first place and won a valuable prize. Qui-Gon then went to a cantina to passage to Coruscant. Qui-Gon learned that Obi-Wan was going to be leaving for Coruscant later that day and Obi-Wan agreed to take them to Coruscant. Palpatine used his connections to the under-belly of the Republic to contact the Dark Jedi. With tremendous hatred and total impatience, Palpatine quickly mastered the darkside of the Force under the teachings of the evil Dark Jedi. The individual skill of the Dark Jedi is unimportant. Instead, the darkside gives the Dark Jedi immense powers with little effort, diligence and training in exchange for complete allegiance. The Dark Jedi told Palpatine that it was Palpatine's destiny to crush the Jedi and to rule the galaxy as its sole dictator. The Dark Jedi had lived in the shadows of the Jedi for over 1,000 generations and resented the Jedi's very existence. With Palpatine, the Dark Jedi could forsee that they might gain the respect and prestige that they so sorely desired. Ironically, the Dark Jedi could not foresee that they had created a ruthless, darkside monster that would not only destroy those who followed the lightside, but also the Dark Jedi themselves. Palpatine returned to the Senate and kept his mastery of the darkside and his association with the Dark Jedi a secret from all his friends, allies and peers. Lusting for more and more power, Palpatine used Dark Jedi mind tricks to win over the weak-minded members of the Senate. The revenge of the Dark Jedi was underway. The elite rulers of the Republic were stunned and confounded by Palpatine's unprecedented surge in popularity. Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Padme and Anakin (who convinced his mother to let him visit the capital city) arrived on Coruscant, the crown jewel of the Old Republic. Padme met with Palpatine in order to convince him to ask the senate to help Alderaan. The Galactic Senate voted in favor of helping Alderaan and declared war against the Nimoudians. The senate ordered the Jedi Knights and the Old Republic's military to free Alderaan from the Nimoudians. In a tremendous battle at Alderaan that occurred both in space, on water and on land, the Old Republic and Jedi warriors defeated the Nimoudians and Naboo palace was once again free from tyrrany. During the subsequent celebrations, it appeared that the Old Republic and the Jedi Knights would endure forever . . .
Eldorodo and Bode

I was surprised by the comparison to Bode, a cartoonist that I thought had been completely buried in the rubble of cultural history, but since it came up, I'll offer the following digression. Given the recent interest in film biographies of relatively marginal figures like Ed Wood and Andy Kaufman (and I don't mean that in a negative way), would Bode's life make a great movie??

Ok, Harry...looks to me like you managed to get your hands on, as knowledge aluded to, a wonderful piece of test animation by the incomperable animator James Baxter (Supervising Animator of Belle, Rafiki, & Quasimodo), done to test the look of a character and background concept. The young lady's ACTUAL name is Chel, voiced by the inimmitable Rosie Perez. She is something of a femme fatale and lovable scamp all rolled into the sexy packege you see in these revealing, albeit not high quality, scans... TO answer an earlier question, Spirit does NOT refer to Will Eisners creation, though I do agree this would be an awesome project, though perhaps impossible to truly capture Eisner's brilliance. Spirit is Dreamwork's third animated feature, set in the old west, focusing on the life of a horse and his many adventures..This is all I can tell you of it as scripts and plots change for this film on a weekly basis. It's still fairly early in pre-production, but shaping up pretty well...

Holy shit, that El Dorado chick is a little nugget! She looks even naughtier than Kim Basinger in Cool World. Does anyone out there remember that Brad Pitt vehicle? Did that movie want to make you shag a cartoon or what? In any case, it sounds like DreamWorks is seriously into the animation business, albeit on a little more adult level (or so it would appear).
