That's really sad. I remember my first introduction to Joe was watching the Bug's Life DVD (Which, in addition to be the MOST underrated Pixar flick, it is BY far the FUNNIEST, was also the first DVD I ever bought) where they talked about him voicing Heimlich for the story boards and being so good that they kept him on for the role. He showed up in subsewuent DVD's, and it's a true shame. My wishes go out to his family, and to his other family, Pixar.

And everyone who knew him seems to say he was the nicest guy in the world. Which I guess is what you would imagine someone behind Toy Story would be. He will be missed, even by those of us who only knew him through his movies.

...Pixar is the greatest studio on the planet. It is their high standards that brought someone like Ranft on board, and it is their high standards that will be the key to their continued success.
A sad day, indeed. Reminds me of when we lost Jim Henson.

The irony! Considering how he died... I'm sure a funnyman like Ranft would appreciate that.

since some fuckers will be cursing you because they are late going to the mall or some shit. Michael Bay and Akiva Goldman are still walking around while someone that could make the ENG and Pixar films dies in such a shitty way. What a shame.

this is quite sad news. the idea that pixar might never put out a film as clever and funny as toy story 2 again is distressing to say the least... you will be missed mr. Ranft

It was never about the animation, it was the damned stories that made them universally good.

The insanely talented Ranft

All I knew him directly from were the special features on the Pixar DVDs, but he was always one I looked out for. This sort of random loss of life is always frustratingly tragic, but with Ranft, we knew where he was headed. I mean, how long would it have been until he was doing what Lasserter and Stanton did, writing and directing his own stuff? He clearly had the talent for it. I knew the Emperor's New Groove story, but didn't know it was he who saved it -- my respect for the man increased even further. I'll put in either Bug's Life or Monster's Inc tonight and pay my respects to the man. Sad, sad news.

I hate to see a cool, creative guy get killed in a car crash like that. It really does sound like a loss for all of us if he really contributed so much to some of Pixar's best films.

Not to discount his fine Pixar work or BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER, but the fact that he essentially made THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE (one of the funniest movies EVER) into what it is now...that spells 'genius' in my book. He will most assuredly be missed.

"Slow down, you flowers..." Damn, this is depressing. I always looked forward to seeing Ranft on the "soo-pah genius" Pixar DVDs, and his talents at writing, storyboarding and voice acting will be sorely missed. It's also eerie that he died in a car crash less than a year before Pixar's Cars comes out (which would make a dedication to him in that film's credits be in somewhat bad taste, I suppose). What a tragedy.
