I saw Mysterious Skin in London about 2 weeks ago. It was easily the most difficult, challenging movie I have ever experienced and it was also one of the most exceptional. It will probably be one of the best movies I never add to my DVD collection purely because I don

Howls Moving Castle is amazingly creative, Miyazaki's second best film to date. Princess Mononoke is still my favorite.

...but is his second weakest film to me by far (slap bang next to mononoke)....visual flair should not excuse a sub standard story structure with a weak ending. The book is a lot better and is more cohesive.

It's not a message of "it's not easy being old" pointed toward the young, but rather, "you're only as old as you choose to be" pointed toward adults. First off, Miyazaki has explicitly stated that this film was made for the elderly (of course, like all his films it is enjoyable for any age). Second, there's a subtle but important change from the book that really makes this clear: the curse on Sophie is never actually lifted in the film. This means that if operates differently than the one in the book: rather than simply making her old, it makes her outer appearance match her personality. As her relationship with Howl brings her long-forgotten sense of youthful enthusiasm for life back to the surface, her physical youth returns as well.
