I actually thought that this was already a done deal, but no matter. Guess that explains the delay in news on the project. Not sure if I like the "shot for shot" approach for a movie like this, but then, I'm not familiar with the comic book. Anyway I hope it's a decision that Snyder arrived at for the right reasons.

Looked like that cause theey were attempting to get a 30's washed out photo feel. They could do something monumental with this one. The problem with Millers work is that it lends itself WONDERFULLY to animation... but not realy live action. Granted Sin City lived up to it, but not the same...because it ened up using shads of grey when the Comic was stark black and white.

The Battle of Thermopylae is a great story and there has to be a great movie in it somewhere. Steven Pressfield's GATES OF FIRE would rock ass but Miller's 300 would be cool too. I can't believe they'll leave in all the sausage, though, and maybe that's not a bad thing. I'm big on historical accuracy but that much male nudity would probably be distracting in a cinematic form. I'm not too excited about this director, I must say. I'd be more comfortable with someone more experienced with shooting battle scenes.

The 300 Spartans each had squires or valets or shield bearers or whatever the hell you call those personal assistants. Man, was Frank Miller's "300" really all that good? I remember picking it up at a store and not seeing enough to justify buying it. I did buy the first two Sin City trade paperbacks, though.

The 300 only refers to the Spartan soldiers, the Greek army total is estimated to be some where around 7,000 (but still, that was 7000 against a few hundred thousand), and it was mainly the Spartans that stood their ground and fought to the death, most of the Greek army retreated after the battle had been lost. I don't know if I really like the idea of doing such a large scale picture completely on a soundstage, but I guess we've seen enough of the sprawling CGI epics to already know what those look like, so maybe something new can be brought to this, guess I'll just have to wait and see.

"Since when did directors stop directing?"
by Thirteen 13
Jul 28th, 2005
03:26:09 AM
They didn't stop directing. One of the reasons why Sin City was such a success was because it was faithful to the source material and you had a director that cast well and made sure the actors didn't start taking creative liberties, or re-reading the script and thinking that Frank Miller should have drew it this way, or wrote it that way. Robert Rodrigez was a big Sin City fan. He understood the source material, and he was there to advise the actors on what their role meant, how to do it, and give direction on this is the way its going to be done. Thats why Sin City worked so well. It gave the fans what they wanted. An actual true adaption to the silver screen. It only cost 40 million to make and it grossed 120 million and thats not including the overseas box office sales which will outnumber that. And that movie was rated "R" and true to the source material which effectively scared away the FF4 crowd and the "Stealth" crowd. Sin City is an example of a director actually doing what a director is supposed to do....make a quality movie worth owning on DVD with a lot of replay value.

Rodriguez was a fan. Doubt this guy is. Sin City makes money and they start sniffing around other Miller properties to cash in on. That's all this is. Even down to the frame-for-frame translation. This same shit happens every time a genre movie is a success. LA Confidential - all Ellroys books got optioned in about 3 seconds. Then fuck all was done with them. And Ellroy is a million times better than Miller. What next - Ronin? With a female lead. Starring Milla Jovovich. I bet it happens too, the greedy bastards

This isn't one of the great last stands... The Battle at the Hot Gates was, without a doubt, THE greatest last stand in all western history. Thermopylae was the birthplace of western military tradition, which still echos in the armies of Europe and the US to this day. The freedom of the men of Hellas vs. the slavery of the Persian King. Just imagine what it would have been like, an army twice the size of the one that is simulated in the LOTR:ROTK, and only 300 spartans and their king to stop them. Glorious huh? It is, even though Miller doesn't include the 700 men from Thespiae, and 400 additional men of Thebes that fought under Leonidas. Still that's only 1400... Xerxes army was well over 200,000.

Saving me from revealing my geekdom by reminding everyone of the other Greek contingents who remained behind with Leonidas' men in the pass (uh....methinks I just did it anyway...doh!) Miller's 300 is not history, but it is a searing, brutal version of the battle, and though I am a budding lecturer of Ancient History I'm not one of these people that will sit there and bitch about every little detail they changed (Troy excepted, because that was a pile of poo). Being a huge film fan as well as a history fan, I just love seeing my Ancients on the big screen. In my opinion, anything that brings my fascinating subject to da kidz is A Good Thing, especially if it inspires them to come to my lessons - where I can shatter their illusions, mwahhahahaaaa! No, only kidding... As for Pressfield's Gates of Fire, it would make a great movie but talk of George Clooney or Bruce Willis as Leonidas is slightly worrying...he was an old dude! Maybe they can play Dienekes, and leave Leonidas to an old hand...But who to cast... Damn, I wish I was casting it!

I really like 300, but I can't see an entire feature length movie out of it if they're doing a panel-for-panel recreation. The stories in Sin City were much more dense, and they still needed to stitch three stories together to make one movie. There's also quite a lot of butts and weiners (the technical term) all over the place. I assume they'll be changing that.

No one is reading the V thread anymore, so I would like to point out to all of the dolts who immediately swallowed whatever lies the authorities fed them... "The family of the Brazilian man shot dead by marksmen who mistook him for a suicide bomber revealed last night how police have changed their account of the incident. As the body of Jean Charles de Menezes was flown home to Brazil for his funeral later today, his cousin said that senior officers at Scotland Yard have retracted claims that the 27-year-old electrician was acting suspiciously, so officers had no option but to open fire. Vivien Figueiredo, 22, said police told her that he was wearing a lightweight denim jacket and not some bulky coat that could have hidden an explosive belt underneath. Detectives also claimed immediately after the shooting that Mr Menezes had refused to heed shouted warnings by armed police and vaulted the ticket barriers at Stockwell Tube station. Now police say that he used his travelcard to gain access to the station. Ms Figueiredo said:

Something about last stand of humanity movies/books that always gets me. On a side note, in response to Quantum Kens earlier remark, there is more to directing than deciding shot composition. Directing is about being able to put a good story together, getting good performances and making a visually pleasing film, not to mention pre-production and post-production duties. Accomplishing that is no small feat, even when the frames are drawn for you. RR didn't just set up the shot and hit record and yell "just read the script!"

Running from the police is acting suspiciously, especially following a bombing attack. All the witnesses confirm that he was running away at the time of the shooting. Some witnesses confirm that he wore a jacket that could have been concealing a bomb. Some witnesses reported seeing wires protruding from the jacket. If he was working as an electrician , as has been suggested, then they could have been work tools. He was most likely an illegal worker in the UK as Brazilians have no automatic right to work there. He ran from the police thinking they were immigration officers. His family confirm that because he was brought up in Brazil's townships he would know NOT to run from the police because of their trigger happy disposition. Given that, he was obviously so anxious to avoid the British police that he did what he would never do in Brazil ie run. He presumably assumed that unlike the Brazilian police the British police do no carry guns. However, he must not have been completely out of touch with current events to not know that the opposite was true. It is an unfortunate accident. And no doubt the family will now try to get as much money as possible out of the British police for killing their son who was working illegally in the UK and didn't have the sense to stop when challenged during a terrorist bombing campaign. It'll be a bonanza payout in Brazil. Hope they and their lawyers enjoy it.

Yeah, I do remember that I liked Daredevil: Born Again and Elektra: Assassin when I read them so long ago. The amazing thing about Sin City is not the story--it's the incredibly bold black and white art. I had never seen that style before. (It may have been done before, but I'd not seen it.) Once the shock and awe of the style wore off, after the first two trade paperbacks, the weakness of the stories took over, and I had to stop reading/buying the Sin City books. The same thing happened with the TV show "24" and the "Preacher" comic books; once the style novelty wore off, the weak stories were not able to maintain my interest.

The scenes of urban America in ruins...Polley's hubby just peeling off from pursuing her car in favor of neighborly fresh meat... the eagle's eye view of Wisconsin burning, followed by the t-bone & gas station explosion. All terrific. And Ving Rhames is one of my favorite guys working right now. Wish he were in this. Lets hope DOTD was a learning process for Zack, & that he can sustain it on 300. It read fine, but sounded about as silly as Plan 9. And another thing, Rodriguez should have had a producer credit and that's it. by Filmrage

Here's a question to the Author of 'Gate of fire' Steven Pressfield. I found in an intervew from a few years back. . . . . . . . . . . . Q."How are plans for the film of Gates of Fire progressing (George Clooney?)" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A. The film. Just a week ago, the director Michael Mann (Last of the Mohicans, The Insider) closed a deal with Universal to "develop" the property, i.e. work with the screenwriter David Self on getting a script that will move on to the next level. We'll see how that goes. I'm not sure what George Clooney's participation will be, if any, as an actor. In his capacity as a producer, however, he is still involved, as the deal was made with his production company, Maysville Pictures, and his ex-partner Robert Lawrence. Basically, I know nothing, however. All I know I get from aint-it-cool-news.com. I'm not kidding. Check it out.
Shot for frame shit
by Filmrage
Jul 28th, 2005
06:49:56 PM
As much as i loved Millers Graphic Novels i have to say that the movie Sin City was a snorefest. It's a fact that every medium be it words, pictures, sound or moving pictures have inherent advantages over each other as well as disadvantages and the shot for frame movie of Sin City revealed a worship and preference of the medium of a graphic novel and not for the story of its author. . . . . . . . ok it was an interesting experiment but in doing the shot for frame it was just plain neglecting to use the pros of the film medium to tell the story. . . . . . . . the same approach to Millers '300' will not only make the same mistake but it will ignore the greater, truer story of the 300 spartans. Imagine a big budget movie ignoring the real story of a pivotal true life event in histor to instead tell the comic book version. I'm sorry but as much as i love comics and especially anything by Miller i even more love real history, especially when the story is as freaking perfect as that of the 300 Spartans defending the pass at Themopolae.
Pressfield's GATES OF FIRE should be made, not this!
by ConanTheBuilder
Jul 28th, 2005
07:59:38 PM
Why oh why is Pressfield's "Gates of Fire" version in development hell, when another fucking comic book movie goes through? What a bastardization. Sure, I will probably enjoy "300," but Pressfield's "Gates of Fire" is the epitome of what I have been hoping for in this latest batch of "Sword and Sandal" flicks. ***STORY SPOILERS THROUGHOUT THIS POST, YOU ARE WARNED*** The problem a screenwriter will have with "Gates of Fire" is the "main character" who's really the narrator: XEO. Xeo essentially has no personality throughout the entire story, other than being fiercely loyal to his Spartan masters. The character of Xeo doesn't grow one bit through the whole book. Essentially, the character is there for one thing, and one thing only: Narration. While the story arc of Xeo and his love for his cousin is very interesting, it is ultimately spurious to the story the book is trying to tell. Pressfield wanted an outside-in approach to telling the tale and that's how he invented Xeo's character and arc. ROOSTER the half-helot is actually a more interesting character in that he actually grows by the end of the story **SPOILER ALERT** eventually ending up as a Spartan warrior at the end at the Battle of Plataea **END SPOLER** If I were to make any large changes at all in the whole story, it would be to replace XEO's character with ROOSTER, but perhaps keep the name of "Xeo." Maybe meld the two characters into one. The movie should play HEAVILY on the the relationships between these four men: Dienekes, Alexandros, Polynikes, and Rooster - the respect finally shown by Polynikes towards Rooster (mutually given by the end); Polynikes to Alexandros; the father/son style relationship between Alexandros and Dienekes; the connection between Alexandros and Rooster; the connection between Rooster and Dienekes thrust upon them by Dienekes wife; the animosity between Polynikes and Dienekes. Hell, Leonidas should remain a background character throughout the whole thing, perhaps only coming to some kind of prominence only in the final battle scenes. Keep all that in mind, I would skip the whole Xeo backstory completely, living in the bush after the sack of his polis, etc. I would start the movie with this one scene: The scene where the Spartans have assembled for a mock-training campaign. The younger recruits are assembled and harshly captained and berated by Polynikes - he breaking their noses during the shield drill - focusing heavily on the animosity shown towards Alexandros. Begin the movie by shocking the audience - plunge the moviegoers deep into the culture from minute 1. One thing I hope they portray in a possible movie is the effect such teriffying battle did to men mentally. The book describes how enemies of the Spartans peed themselves, trembled, and even shrieked in terror even without wounds. The book even goes so far as to describe the Spartans themselves overcome with a sort of euphoria after battle... their knees giving way and crying together. All of this needs to be portrayed. Lastly, the HUMOR... wow, the HUMOR needs to translate from the book to the movie. So many horrifying images need levity, and the book provides it. The harsh language, dry wit of the soldiers, and vulgar jokes told amongst the troops before they went into battle are all priceless.
Troy and the sucking of ass

First of all, I'd love to see this come to pass. Frank Miller's work was meant to be put on film. Secondly, I really don't get why people bash Troy all that much. I have to say, when I first watched the movie, I was not all that impressed. I didn't find the score memorable, I thought the wide shots of battle and troops were all LOTR clones, and the deviation from Homer's work were all distracting. However, I've recently seen the film on HBO in high-definition a few times since then, and I've come to enjoy it a lot more. I don't mind the deviations from Homer because after all, this is an ancient story, and the intent of Troy was to put it in a "realistic" setting, how it may have proceeded if it really happened. The acting is not bad, the cast is superb, and the direction and editing are not bad either. The fight between Achilles and Hector, IMO, is very well done. Furthermore, the themes in the score become more apparent upon subsequent viewings. Can someone explain to me why there's so much hate for Troy?

No, it really is bad. Do we really need to be reminded every two minutes that Brad Pitt's character "will be remebered forever"? It happens about 90 times. Troy was horribly bad, only Eric Bana and Peter O'Toole (and Sean Bean i suppose) escaped with any dignity. I wa slooking forward to it, but, let's face it, it's not a good film.
Troy totally sucked, made to look half decent in retrospect by S

Stone seemed to model his Alexander on the ranting Castro from his docu. . . . . . . . Try was basically the 'pearl habour' formula. Something for the ladies, something for the gents. . . . . . How many ways can we count the stupidity and shallowness of it. Firt of all, the Trojians get all in a panic cause they 'suddenly' spot the Athenian fleet when it's like 3 miles from their shore. er, the horizon is ten miles off and any spotters from a coastal city would have seen the masts instantly as they popped up over the horizon. This would have given them about half a day to prepar not ten bloody minutes. . . . . . secondly, not only is a fuckin massive fortress and huge huge huge babylonian type walls meant to give you the advantage and in the case of the story of the Trojian war it did as they hid behind the walls for ten years (not the two week time span of the movie siege) but in the movie they put their friggin army on the outside to meet the Greeks. What a total insult to the audience. Oh, it looks better that way so screw history and logic. What an awful awful awful movie Troy was. Oh, er, the whole battle of half a million greeks against the trojians is going badly so the king neeeeeeds Achilles and his 50 murmadans in order toturn the tide, sheeesh.
The 300 Spartans...

...play U of M this fall!!! ( sorry, its a Michigan thing) I'm glad they're doing this story, even though they won't get it right from an historical POV, because the 300 Spartans movie with Richard Egan & Ralph Richardson was an inert pile of schnauzer crap. Its hilarious to watch spears without points getting chucked around, guys dropping their weapons to grab the "thrown" spears & hold them in place...looked like a community theatre production from hell. ( thanks & a tip 'o the hat to IMBD...although I own this fruity little fart & its all true - even the extra taking one in the piehole) This story deserves better than that, and if Millers story is not going to be historically accurate, it should at least be exciting. Or fun. I doubt ( and pray) that it won't be done the way Sin City was...

Excellent, but hardly news. This has been on imdb for months. Not sure if the Sky Captain look would fit this film, but Sky was definitely more fun and entertaining than Sin City, which just had great visuals going for it. And just to start a big shit-throwing match: As pure entertainment, the Dawn remake was a hell of a lot better.

... I heard they were plainsclothes police so what if he thought they were a bunch of guys who were trying to beat or rob him or such? Was it that obvious they were police? Either way, it's a public relations disaster and if anything has made the UK less safe not more ...
