You're absolutely right. Hellboy was a credible character that you believed in every situation, where you weren't focusing on the makeup, but instead on the monster. The Thing has looked like an oversized burn victim from day one and I'm baffled that they wouldn't even try to cover up the rubber creases in the suit!! And I watched pieces of the Hulk again over the weekend, and as cool as he looks in places, he still doesn't "exist" in the same world as the actors. He's a really great effect, but you don't by him as actually being next to Jennifer Connoley. CGI Thing would be a bad idea.

This is what happens when you gear your film to the young, hip "MTV kids". Treat the material with respect; you get Batman Begins. Try to appeal to the tweens and you get this kind of crap. It's too bad, because the FF have a pretty strong legacy and people are going to think this is all there is to the FF.

I'm not going to judge the Thing until I see him in action. And I still say Doom being the dictator of an imaginary country, a concept that's totally Cold War sci-fi, would have been ridiculous on film today and would have made him an incredibly uninteresting character. The corporate executive thing makes much more sense. Even "Denmark" in Hamlet (the one with Ethan Hawke) has been interpreted as a corporation run by Claudius (Kyle McLachlan in the only decent role he did after Showgirls killed his career). Giving him closer relationships with the Richards clan has good potential, I think. Whether it will work or not, we'll see.

I noticed they used a couple of different takes than what I'd seen before, like when Reed says he can't look at Sue. Better. As someone who has read about 3 FF comic books in his whole life, I don't have a lot invested in the characters, although I think Doom could have been done differently. Also, Thing looks like a guy in a foam suit, which is too bad. Hopefully they do a better job with Beast in X-Men 3.

I hope this movie is number 1 with a cool 50 million just to put us fanboys in our place. I think most of the general public wants to see this that is why Fox has been going all out with the marketing. Plus, people I know who don't give a shit about comic books or the Fantastic Four want to see this because the action looks great, they like the Human Torch lines in the film and it has a hot ass Jessica Alba. I hope the film is fun because a brother is directing it and you fanboys cry like a bitch all to often at dumb shit like webshooters and leather suits. Shut the hell up and enjoy the flick...its summer.

So, I think this movie will be fun, all the trailers indicate that it will be a joyride of special effects, which, as a comic book movie is what it should be. but my problem is that the FF is one of the last major Marvel franchises. After this we can look forward to Ghost Rider and Deathlok (shudder). FF has to do big $ or it's very likely studios won't pony up big bucks for Iron Man or Captain America. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong. If they let Chitlis act then the Thing will be cool. Remember back when the ID4 Godzilla was made and at the last minute they had to redo all the effects cause the motion capture wasn't up to snuff yet... I can't help but think that if the Thing really sucked that they would CGI him up at the last minute since they already did reshoots to up the ante after the Incredibles came out.

That's Maria Menounos, and she's way too hot to be generic. Somehow, I'm still amazed that "Earth's greatest comic magazine" is so little known these days. I heard a group[ of teenagers talking after seeing the trailer a couple of nights ago, about how the Thing character just seemed like a miniature Hulk. And it got me thinking, that if they had stuck closer to Doom's comic origin, most people would see him as a Darth Vader ripoff. I'm hoping for a pleasant suprise, but not expecting greatness. The Torch looks pretty good, Reed looks cheesy, The Thing looks terrible, and Sue looks OK. Can't tell about Doom. It'll be a decent way to kill acouple of hours, and I'm sure it'll be added to my DVD collection (Hell, Elektra's in there). Just too bad that there are so many great epic FF stories that probably will never make it to the big screen.

I know this film looks like a bag of wank, but I wish people would stop going on about how the thing doesn't his rocky self. Actually for an origin story he looks about right in terms of craginess and proportions in respect of the original source material... http://monsterblog.oneroom.org /fantastic_four_1.html Only in the later issues did the Thing become his larger craggier self. I would hope that in a sequel (though I doubt there'll be one) they would mimic the character design progression from the comics and bulk the suit up considerably adding the 'crazy paving' effect - or switch entirely to CGI.

So Harry doesn't like the casting, the directing or the practical effects Thing. Strangely enough, it looks to me like those are the three things you don't have to worry about. Based on the footage released so far, you have Tim Story delivering on a script that was impossible to do right, you have actors making horrendous dialog somehow work, and you have a Thing that touches your emotions, as the Hulktron 3000 simulation failed to do. It's a strange, confusing feeling watching this trailer. You know the changes that were made just so people could make their mark on the material, like dogs pissing on a telephone pole. The only one who deserves the scorn and hate being heaped on this film is Michael France, and perhaps the subsequent rewriters. It's him we have to thank for a Ben Grimm who punches Reed in the stomach after he's transformed, it's him we have to thank for Kingpin Doom, for a 35 year old Johnny Storm, and it's him we have to thank for the complete lack of any scientific fidelity in this film, as opposed to Spider-Man and Hulk, which at least made effort.
And while we're on the subject...

They may be worrying that it looks too kiddiesh and turns off older audiences. As fantastic as they are, I don't think Jessica's boobs can save this movie though.

Avi Arad burned the negative of the original FANTASTIC FOUR!
by Bryan
Jun 27th, 2005
01:00:57 PM
I'm not a big Marvel fan and this movie looks terrible so I'm really not all that interested in it. But reading an article about it in Wired I was shocked to learn that, as I said in the subject line, Arad acquired the Roger Corman version of Fantastic Four and burned the negatives! I'm sure most people won't care but I am offended by this on so many different levels. I've seen a bootleg of that movie and yes, it's ridiculous, but it's a fun movie. Nothing against the fine makeup team that did the new Thing, but I much prefer the design of the foam rubber version with the blue underoos. And that last scene, with Mr. Fantastic waving goodbye (actually, a rubber hand on the end of a long pole) had me in tears, I had to rewind and watch it 4 times. Even though I had no interest in this new movie, I was very excited at the prospect of buying a legit DVD of the Corman version to replace my 12th generation bootleg. In fact, a friend of mine knows someone who was a line producer or something on the movie and had never seen it. And he was dying to. So it offends me that Arad would burn it because I genuinely like the movie, but also because I've heard how many people worked on the movie for basically no money because they loved the comic book. And now they got double screwed. Even if the movie is shit, is that a reason to erase it from history? Is Arad going to destroy all of the terrible cartoons and TV movies based on Marvel Comics? Honestly I never understood what the big deal was about Arad, his track record seems random enough that he probably doesn't have that much effect on the movies. But after reading this he is now a villain to me of Schumacher proportions. And at least Schumacher didn't destroy Batman on purpose. Or erase the existence of Tim Burton's films. I hope someone will ask Arad about this next time he's interviewed here (unless they already have, but that Wired article was the first I ever heard of it).

...is the thought that if this movie does fairly well at the box office, after Batman's weak openning. Warners went out of their way to cater to the fans with that flick, terrified of getting killed on the internet after B&R. Arad almost goes out of his way to show contempt for the fans these days. If Fantastic Four, with such negative word of mouth among the fans, does better than Batman, which had a phenomenal level of positive word of mouth among the fans...what then, does this bode for the future of comic films? See, if I was one of the big studio clowns, I'd really start to ask myself how badly we care what these whiners on the internet think. We may be about to be put on Hollywood's official ignore list.

Did they really put Dr. Doom with them so he was created at the same time? It could have been better if he already existed, and the beneficial part of their "unfortunate accident" is they are the only ones able to stop him like it was "meant to be" or whatever they came along at just the right time, so if Ben complains the response is "well if it didn't happen we may not all be here anyway etc". Making them all created at the same time makes the whole random event pointless. I'm just guessing from what Ive heard and maybe its better than this. I'm going to like it anyway I'm gullible like that and I always liked the F4, and I'd actually like it more if it was on the corny side with the Cold War science and everything, and why couldn't Dr. Doom be the leader of a small country make it one of those Eastern European breakoffs from the USSR, make him like a Kim Jong Il or whoever who's also extremely narcisistic and wears a metal suit.

Adambalm, have to respectfully disagree with you about your comparison. Those two movies just don't exist in the same universe. While the FF might have been comparable to the old Batman movies, this new one is a different animal. There's no Fantastically Dark 4 - yeah, they got in an accident, but it's kinda ridiculous and brood-free. This movie is engineered to be a summer ride, whereas BB is played more as an almost operatic drama. And it has higher profile actors and director. Yes, they're both from comic books, but these days with the glut of material out there, that category means next to nothing, as if you're comparing two movies that happened to be based on novels. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not convinced that studio execs or whoever look at the numbers will compare these two movies and make decisions accordingly. And I laughed at the "you're hot" line, mostly because of the pacing and its place in the trailer.

...a big fat reversal of position coming from deep within the abyssmal, fleshy crevasse where Harry keeps what's left of his critical objectivity (or it might just be that cub scout he sat on in 1998, finally decomposed enough to release some truly foul gas). Harry's criticisms of this movie (which, in case you missed this, he hasn't seen) have been vague yet desperate attempts to justify what amounts to prejudice on his part. He wanted it done a VERY specific way and it wasn't. Boo fucking hoo. And now that the movie's getting closer to release and the trailers are getting him excited despite himself, he's downplaying the irrational, rabid hatred he's spewed at the project so he can come out with some "I always hoped the good in this film might outshine the bad" bullshit. I still can't believe the criticism he's holding strongest to is the Thing's appearance, though. As has been pointed out in this talkback by Weshtery and by me in many FF talkbacks before it, Chiklis' Thing looks almost exactly like Kirby's original Thing. This is an origin movie. They hit that nail right on the head. And here's another point that needs driving home: This movie could be a lot of fun or it could suck all five flavors of ass (stretchy, fiery, lumpy, invisible and armored), but Harry's eventual "review" will definitely be a self aggrandizing (and really think about how unnecessary that is for a guy like Harry to do) exercise in semi-literate self-indulgence that will run 1,500 words before even touching on the actual content of the movie.

Also, I mean it's your business if you hate this movie, but a lot of people seem to be going out of their way to do so. I have a feeling that a lot of people complaining about how the Thing should have been CG would be saying the exact opposite, that he should have been a man in a suit if he actually was computer generated. The argument about expecting movies to be important is all well and good if you're one of those people who thinks all movies should be, but I'm betting nobody here is. And the next person who types that the Corman version will be better and actually means it needs a punch in the throat. I'm confused why I get so defensive about this movie considering I'm not even a fan of the Fantastic Four comic books and have nothing emotionally-invested in any of the cast or crew, and especially because people who think it's going to be on the bad side of mediocre are probably correct. I think it's because people here (not just Harry, I mean in TalkBack) are going to such great lengths to bury this film simply because they're bored. This will be worse than Gigli, FF rapes kittens with its suckitude, yadda yadda. Although dr. bulber's comment about the Thing and Doom fight was pretty funny.

The flame effects, the dialogue snippets (which i agree have been done to death) even Chris Evan's acting. To say that This incarnation of the Human Torch look like the best thing in it, is pretty fucking awful. It will be a hit because it's been hyped to be. But it wont be on a Par with BB or even Spiderman 2 (which i thought was pretty lame).

I can't believe this bullshit is still being repeated. See, moving the goal posts is a favorite past time of a desperate following. When Batman opened with 15 million on wednesday, they said wait to see what it makes on friday, on friday it made around 15 million, and when the three day total was only 48 million (actually it was thought lower, around 39-42 mil, but this has been revised) they started very cleverly using the 5 day total in its place. Because comparing the 5 day total of 72 million to the three day opennings of other films doesn't seem like a double standard to them, they're keepers of the flame. The fact is that whenever movies open, whether it's a tuesday, wednesday, thursday, or friday, journalists and industry watchers have always taken into account only the first three days precisely for that reason. If a three year old's got a bigger cock than them, they have to say 'Wait til mine gets erect, it'll be bigger than his is flaccid.' But people need to believe in their heart of hearts that this film exploded onto the charts. It's not enough that it still (barely) did well enough so far to guarantee a sequel (according to Warner exec Fellman), despite the fact that this movie as of last week was selling 25% fewer tickets than Batman Forever did at the same point. These people could be saying 'Oh well, it's a summer slump and the movie will still make its money back and will do far better on DVD', which is what I've been saying. But that's not good enough. They've believed in this movie so long, they can't have their faith shaken.

Why are so many people so quick to point out different numbers about Batman Begin's Box Office? Here's what I see with that movie: It was the best Batman I've possibly ever seen on the big screen, and even if you don't think so, at least a return to greatness for the franchise. Yeah, keep bitching about how it wasn't a success, or how they're cooking the numbers to make the box office look bigger.... WE'RE GONNA GET ANOTHER ONE. So if you really do like the movies, and you don't just like to start shit, there shouldn't be any reason to argue. Batman Begins kicked ass. No rubber nipples. There will be another. THE END.

Apparently this is the scene in the middle of the movie that, according to the script AICN reviewed, where Thing escapes and goes rampaging, and the other three chase after him trying to catch him, ending up on the Brooklyn Bridge. So after all this, the fucking crowd applauds him because he saved a fire truck that would have been fine, if it hadn't been for him? I hope this scene had been drastically rewritten.

My friend, I too was once like you. I even got shit for pointing out the pissing contest that is fandom's obsession with openning weekends. It has to do with the absolutist nature of the talkbacks. Look at Ribbons, this is a reasonable man, half the time pushed into defending things he doesn't care about, or taking positions counter to others, just to try and point out that life is more complicated than their 'this sucks assjobs/this ownz, even jesus has a hardon for this' statements. I started commenting on Begins the day after it opened, voicing a little bit of concern at the initial numbers. See, at this point no one knew if we were getting another one or not. And the more bullshit I heard, the outright lies and 'cooking the numbers' to use you words, the more I began examining the data, and the more I realized that Batman Begins really didn't do so hot as the keepers of the flame were claiming. It didn't bomb, as at first I feared it had, but it didn't meet the record breaking levels set by the house of ideas. I don't fault you for the standard 'holier than thou/won't sully myself money talk' line because I used to have sympathies with it myself. And to further clarify, there are bigger issues to deal with now, that deal with the entire comic movie trend, that some of us are interested in. If you're not, that's certainly a valid position. But if you aren't interested, then you're kind of fucking wasting your time talking about it then, aren't you? So right now there's the 'what ifs' of what Fantastic Four could mean to the entire industry that has grown up around comic adaptations. If FF does better, will studio execs be less inclined to listen to the fans, it being clear that they'll make money in spite of it? Or if FF crashes, will studios take the anemic performance of FF and BB as a signal that the cape craze is over? This is just me thinking out loud, not stating an opinion, which is easy to confuse because all talkbackers ever care to do is the latter. And sadly, no matter how hard one tries, it's all too easy to get forced into it.

Heck, i dunno what to make of this. I mean, it looks the part, imho. I've never really read any ff, and have only the barest knowledge of the characters, outside their names and abilities. Maybe if i was a fan i'd be outraged at some of the things shown, but from an outsiders point of view, it seems to have a good mix of action and comedy, dr doom looks menacing enough, "flame on" looks pretty neat, and i always have dug that shot of the thing smashing into the truck, seemimngly a requisite these days in comic adaptations (This, helboy, and constantine all feature some monster/vehicle interface at some stage). I dont like the way the thing sounds a bit muffled, nor do i like the fact that johhny's every line seems to be a wisecrack, or sue's poxy "no, lets" comeback, which brings Storms lame putdown to toad to mind immidiatley. It seems they are keeping reed out of the trailer a bit, but the bits that we are shown are either lame dialogue or lame (really lame) effects. But hey, ill be there opening weekend, because well, what the fuck else am i going to go see? i'd go see flies crawling on the screen, i'm afraid to say. A more telling analysis would be from my girlfriend, who seen the trailer for the first time before batman; before this she had never heard of the ff. As someone who only goes to movies she really has interest in, and as a harsh critic of cg, monsters, comic adaptations, etc. i was expecting her to pass this off as being utter shite, however she got a big kick out of it, especially the thing smashing dr doom out the window. She thinks this film looks good. She's coming with me when it opens. Maybe the people in the suits are making this film for non-fans, while presuming that fans will go along automatically. Double your dollars. Thats the case with us.

If any of you perfectionists had actually done some research for this movie you might have learned some cool stuff: 1. Doom is a member of the Latverian royal family. 2. He gets a war mask as present for his success from them. 3. Ben Grim's appearance is based on the Jack Kirby style. 4. The film apparantly mentions his past in the Yancy Street Gang. (ironic there's four). What you guys (and girls, too) are avoiding is the fact that the film will be trying to bridge the gap between comic book collectors(like myself) and the average movie goer who's probably never even seen a comic book, much less read one. So to all you nay sayers: Sit down, shut up, buckle up, and hang on!

Sony is releasing a record 30+ movies this year, not including their acquesition of MGM, note..they all suck. pool resources and give us something worth watching and we'll pay money and get out of the slump. sadly now the only chance we have isn't until the holiday season starting in november and by then it will be too far gone. FF will do 35 to open. that is it. it will tail off immediately and finish with a rough 58 after week 5. send a decent message to the big guys for a change and stop your stupid ignorant complaints. I think we need to be fair here and blame THE Story, not TIM Story. The fact is this was a situation not unlike Ratner and X3. They were locked into a script, they knew the direction they were going. There were rewrites since then, one of which was undoing a few changes like making Von Doom Van Damme. They wanted a competant director who could do action and comedy. They got both in Tim Story. Yes, he could have done more, but still, you could blame EJ Captain Smith for crashing the Titanic, but it wouldn't have changed the fact that it was still a flawed design to begin with. I think the fact that this movie even looks entertaining at all is to Story's credit.

was never going to rake in spideyman's numbers. I don't know why people kept expecting that Batman will open to a 100 plus million for the three days. Batman is a dark character and everyone is not as interested in him as say Superheros with flashy powers. I've never been a fan of batman, but i respect the character a lot, and thought the movie was damn good, and the best out of all of them. Batman also has the baggage of the god awful sequels in the 90's. That also tainted his return to the box office. The non fanboy fans were skeptical. I think with the good word of mouth that batman will go on to rake in over 200 million domestically or pretty close to it,but it won't get past 225. Sure it won't be fast, but i think the Bats will have a decent shelf life in theaters.

It's a film that's been propped and catered towards kids. Whether you like to believe it or not, most of those shit lines will play well with the ten year olds. Being clever isn't something I was aware of when I was a kid, I mean I loved the damn Jetsons movie back then. This really is no different. Right now it's just shit entertainment that kids will eat up and cause us to all groan with it's insipid disregard for intellect. I don't mind it when shitty movies come out, but when Hollywood is in such a trend following state, they churn out shit after shit if one is successful. I mean, wire-fu was very interesting when it first came out, it took about a year before it was totally over-exposed. Comic book films are BARELY, and I mean barely, hanging on anymore. There are one or two affirmed franchises, and the rest have already cocked out. Arad has made terrible choices, and he continues to do so. He's just trying to get as many films out as fast as he can so he can cash out and live fat for the rest of his life. It's retarded to watch him bankrupt franchises before they start with terrible writers, half-assed directors, and no vision whatsoever. DC and WB have proven that a director with a VISION can lead a comic book film into an interesting space. Batman Begins was a serious drama with a guy in a bat suit. I'll be damned if it didn't work. Sam Raimi had a VISION, and if you notice, the more control they relegate to Raimi: the better the films get. When studios are making the films by assembly line, you get Daredevil, and you get Fantastic Four. Shit that's made to sell toys and maybe make a few bucks. Let's face it, this film will have a huge opening weekend (roughly 45-50 million) and then completely fucking vanish. But Fox will start the "franchise" until 2 comes out and completely bites it. X3 is pretty much dead in my eyes, and the only things we have to look forward to in terms of an "upcoming" franchise is Superman. How sad is that? Do you remember a few years ago when every comic book film looked like it was going to be the greatest ever? I do, those days are over. We now have Spider-Man, Batman and Superman. But, to be honest, maybe that's the way it should've been in the first place. The icons have rightfully taken their place at the top of both heaps. God Bless fucking Hollywood, thanks for fucking it up, cashing out, and leaving us in the God damn dark. Go fuck yourselves while I desperately grab at straws, looking for quality films that you'll never churn out. Thanks, and have a good one.

Are you people so full of yourselves that you think you can predict how a movie (comic based or not)is really going to do? No, probably not. Most of you are basing your opinions about the movie on your own ideas of what would or wouldn't make this the perfect F4 movie, objectivity be damned! If you guys even tried to pay attention to past comic films, then you might realize that you're probably among the same people who bitched about X-men, which did fairly well and got good reviews. The sequel was even better. You bitched about Spiderman before it came, it turned out to be a great movie, the sequel also better. You probably whined about Batman Begins. Even with a lackluster performance in the boxoffice, it's one of the most highly praised movies this year from critics! So try to adopt some objectivity and take a risk with this one. Besides, cast is awesome and the director seems to understand dramatic comedy. Besides the time you spend writing the messages is time your aren't spending adding to Batman's box office.

FF will make more than batman Begins
by JUSTICE41
Jun 27th, 2005
10:07:42 PM
Batman still has taint on it from the last one and that Catwoman abortion. The Fantastic Four has no baggage. Plus Fox has a way of making money from action movies. Just look at that Smith flick, not to mention X-men. Electra suffered from the taint of Daredevil. The sequel to FF will either suffer from or benefit from This one but nothing else. Besides Marvel characters are just more interesting than DC characters. Superman, no matter who makes it will suffer from the last two, which get's replayed again and again on Turners channels, reminding people how bad they were. Singer is trying something smart by ignoring the last two and attaching his movie to the two good ones. He hopes to ride the coat tails. The fact you have an actual strong man knocking down walls lifting and tosing cars and truck, a guy who bursts into flames and fires fireballs, as well as can make a cool 4 sign out of his flame trail, a guy who can stretch into all kinds of pretzel shapes and a hottie who can project invisible shields will guarantee this movies success. No matter how corny the movie may turn out it will open bigger the Batman Begins because of the curiousity factor and will bring them back if it's a good watch. WOTW will make good bank but will die quickly. A worldwide release will quarantee a huge BO take but after two weeks it will fall away and FF will take over. Just think of WOTW and FF as this years version of last years Spiderman 2 and The Incredibles. A little too close to each others release date but it will be a good handoff.

Well I certainly expected it to do more than the $50 something in made over the course of one weekend. But that's not the point. My point is that virtually every adult and child in English-speaking countries probably knows who Batman is, to say nothing of his popularity in other countries. I know this movie isn't exactly kid-friendly (although I'll eat crow if Warner isn't trying to bamboozle the kiddies into thinking it is), nor is the character Arguably as beloved as Spider-Man, but he's a pop cultural icon, and this movie opened to rave reviews almost across the board, and, at least going by people I know (the ones who I know wouldn't automatically love it because it's Batman) it's gotten fairly strong word-of-mouth in its favor. It seemed like one of those movies people would have felt like they had to go see. I expected something at least a little higher than $80 million, if only by another 5 or 10 million. So where do we lie the blame? Some money can taken off because of its darker sensibilities, but I think that a lot of it also has to do with the fact that people who are on the fence about going to see movies in the first place are now more comfortable watching them at home. My point to rocketmanblues having nothing to do with the Fantastic Four but rather being: I don't think collaboration between the studios is going to "win" back this imaginary lost audience. They're not staying home because of the quality of movies so much as the experience has looked less inviting since the boom of home theaters and quick DVD releases. Drop-off can also be attributed to the way the film business cannibalizes itself by having huge releases week after week and the way that those releases are placed on 4 screens at a time at one's local googleplex and then yanked out of three of them the subsequent week. I don't have any evidence to support my case with, but I have read editorials on both. Anyway, the implication is that inter-studio collaboration would birth something "special." I'm not sure how true that is. The concentration of good movies would probably go up, maybe effects houses would even be able to spit out more sophisticated pixels, but I don't think that all of a sudden, all this crazy, innovative, phunktastic shit would be hitting the multiplexes that people would feel like they had to see. To me that sounds like asking for something so incredible you don't even know what it is. ******** On a sidenote: if it's halfway-decent FF might surprise people. I've heard from a lot of TalkBackers and even around my local haunts that children are digging what they see for this, and, as even us lowly film geeks know, never underestimate the clout of the kiddies. Especially the ones who make their parents take them to movies a gajillion times.

Can you just sit still and listen to an opinion that doesn't completely parrot your own? Or maybe work on your reading comprehension skills? Never mind the fact that Fantastic Four was secondary to what I had to say in the first place. Jackass.

Like when he mentioned that flashy suits don't sell tickets. Because that's EXACTLY what I was chirping about in the previous statement. My best guess: He's roughly 15 or 16 and barely understands what we're saying in the first place. Although, that does mean that he might, in fact, like Sky High.

My first posting boo boo. Not blind optimism my fine feathered friend. Observations and trends are predictors. Works for the Stock Market why not movies. Everyone is wondering why herbie and bewitched didn't work. I'll tell you. No one cares. Very few things old are worth remaking. Also Will Ferrett is just annoying and has done too many movies in one year. Isn't this like the second remake Mrs. Cruise has done in two years? People are people, they expect things. They expect Spielberg to make a good sci-fi flick. They expect the FF to be funny and action pact just based on the old cartoons being run every night on cartoon network. Unlike DD, Electra, Blade, and even the Hulk, the FF and Spidey have had a presence on TV for years. Ask anyone who the FF are and they'll tell you about the old cartoon or the not so old one with herbie the robot. Just like a lot of people knew Spidey from the cartoon. Familiarity can bring in the curious. X-men didn't have such a big tv presence. FF will make half what Spidey did because ,"the tired of comicsbook movies", factor will also kick in. It will do well.

It was from Invisible Woman's point of view and went something like, "Her brother's out of control, her boyfriend won't commit, and her ex just won't go away." Like the LOTR spots always gave time to the Aragorn/Arwen/Eowyn love triangle.

I was actually rather depressed to see Begins do so poorly. Well, the numbers were "OKAY" but nothing beyond standard. Considering the franchise is coming off of one of the absolute WORST sequels in the history of cinema, you have to expect a slippery period. I still think that this film will retain a solid rating on imdb.com and find an even bigger audience on DVD. Inevitably my guess is that the sequel (which is also, in fact, inevitable) will have huge numbers. Restarting a franchise can be sticky towards the beginning, and when you aren't following any particular standards, it's a risk. But WB was high on this film, hence the approach Singer is taking with Superman. They know they have a winner here, and they plan on riding it. I think it'll hold strong and do solid numbers here and worldwide. But DVD sales will be gigantic, leading to a far more successful sequel. It's sad though, because this was a pivotal moment in trend-setting. You fellars reading this should go see the movie, just so people will try to take comics seriously. If Fantastic Four does better than BB, we can expect some more Kinberg scripted trash receptacles. I hope to God that's not the case.

Why the box office slump?

Why is there a box office slump? I don't go to the theater hardly ever anymore, for me it's just the epic films that I feel need a big screen to do them justice like Star Wars or LOTR. Beyond that I no longer have any desire whatsoever to see movies in theaters and let me tell you why **LISTEN UP YOU HOLLYWOOD DUMBFUCKS** Commercials, that's right commercials! Before every movie I've seen for the last several years there has been a block of TV style commercial ads for everything from Coca-Cola to fucking car insurance, goddam mother-effing commercials. The best (or worst) example I have of this is the ass-pounding dissappointement that was Matrix Revolutions. I am not exaggerating, there were 20 fucking minutes of commercials that were played before they even started the goddam movie trailers, an entire 1/2 hour went by before we got to see one single frame of the movie we fucking paid for. So now I can sit at home and rent a movie, for a ridiculously low fraction of what it would cost to see in a theater, and the only thing I have to see that I don't want to is the FBI warning at the beginning of the DVD. One push of the MENU button after that warning and I can push PLAY and watch the movie I rented rather than the bullshit they are trying to shove down my throat and up my ass. It's become a game for me and my friends, we now BOOOOO the commercials and have gotten entire theaters BOOing along with us, so much so that the ushers come running in to find out what in hell is going on. Do it people, BOO those goddam commercials.

All remember the TV show Hulk with Lou and Bill. So when this Giant growing man showed up looking lime green on the Superbowl a shiver ran through them all the way to Universal. After watching the Kong Trailer I suspect a similiar shiver is running down Universals back. The Hulk had more of a real life presense on tv than even the Spidey Live action shows. Hell, more people remembered that Spidey from the Electric Company. Then there's the Macy's Parade Spidey Float. The Hulk didn't have that kind of coverage. People growing up who watched the FF cartoon are more likely to go see what the live action looked like. Hell I bet if The corman one had been released it would have made some money. It only cost Corman 1 million to make. It would have made at least ten mll before everyone caught on. But to much Superhero Movie saturation is going to lower all the future BO of any Comic Movie. Marvel should scale back and concentrate on the top 3 like DC seems to be doing. You know a Teen Titans movie would probably work out pretty good.

At some theatres it is 10.75 or even 12 dollars around LA and I've heard even more in NY. So that makes especially families won't go to the movies every weekend, they will must likely go once a month. Batman Begins BO is a mix of that, and it being too long, too dark, and too much character development for kids. Also I know a number of ladies who didn't want to see it simply because "they don't like Katie Holmes" They are idiots but they are not alone I am guessing. I saw it again a couple days ago and there were two kids crying who had to leave during the first Scarecrow scene. So I'm guessing they won't be back. FF has a chance to make it big because kids will like it, there's action so guys will go, and there's a love story and powerful female so women will go. It also won't be 2 hours and 20 minutes long or however long BB is it will probably be like an hour and forty minutes. So FF will do alright I am guessing I say 110 mil.

AGREED COMPLETELY, ticket sales are at a ridiculous all-time high, and that's what pisses me off even more about those goddam commercials. The theaters are making more money than ever by adding the commercials, but do ticket prices stay low? Do they increase at a reasonable rate even? Hell, I'd sit through some commercials happily if it meant my ticket and snacks didn't cost me my firstborn and a testicle.

don't be so vain as to think every comment on here which isn't addressed is directed to you. damn you're an idiot. we posted about the same time, I figured it would pop up under the one I was referencing--justice41 saying that it will take over from WOW. oh and dread, if you're just here to start crap then, well...no different from the rest and you're to be ignored. and ribbon, you gay bastard, I completely agree that dvd releases and pay per view on demand crap and soon to be satalite uplinks from theaters themselves, and the expiriments with releasing DVDs at theater release, all give folks, especially families the ability to spend 5 bucks per family instead of 40, for only a short wait. that's why theaters are getting bigger, offering whatever customers want, instituting digital projectors, and with Sony pushing to release their 4k digital, thinking the customers will know the difference shows that they are trying something. but all I hear are complaints about the quality of the movie. recently patrons expect to only get a few cheap laughs and walk. they aren't moved oten so they don't expect it therefor there's no point in going. up the quality and yes spred them out instead of trying to compete so much and just understand that opening kingdom of heaven wasn't a good idea with star wars so close. now again, for jumping to comclusions, you're kinda smart but still a gay bastard.

great point. not that topping herbie is any sort of feat, but I agree, 3-day, 5-day, opening week, who gives a damn, it got it's word of mouth and got a little staying power and unfortunately as ribbons said it will only have so much staying power due to war of the worlds opening, otherwise I would doubt it would have slouched much. this is the first movie I paid for in over a year because I was somewhere else and couldn't go for free but it was so amazing I had to see it again and take soemone (dad) to see it. being back home now that's all I see, repeat viewers bringing a friend to see the movie that really got their attention. we need more of these, and we'll get them. WOW, chronicles of narnia, harry potter and the like. but when we release them so close together we lose sight of the great ones and go for the new shiny object. (still bitter that the original batman took UHF out of the limelight--way to go execs!)

worldwide. it's not that people don't like batman or whatever, it's that batman's been connected to those god-awful flicks (you know which ones) and average movie goers were scared BB was going to be bad too. even though the trailers showed no hint of that... people are stupid. retarded, even. word of mouth is spreading, and you have to admit, rental and dvd sales for it are going to be insane. the sequel will bring in a lot more money, mark my words. i knew this would start off slowly. there's this kid i know who was bashing batman on June 16th, after i was raving at how great the movie was. this jerk says "batman's sucks because he needs a little boy to help him... batman sucks because he wears underwear outside his costume... blah blah blah" wow... you sure got some good points, there. the thing is, PEOPLE ARE FUCKING STUPID. and since this is a talkback for F4, i'll just say... i'm seeing it once in theatres for sure, and i'll buy the dvd, even if i don't like the movie. hell, the only comic movie i haven't bought has been HULK, 'cause that blew.

Story said he wanted to go the "Man in Suit" route to show a man trapped in that form. Also, if you go back to FF #1, that's how he looks! All of the fanboys griping how this isn't gonna be dark enough should get a grip: FF was never dark; it was supposed to be heroes as celebrities and it seems like they've got that. I wish they'd done an accurate Doom origin, but they've said that it was done this way so they could do the both origins in one flik.

Honestly...how many comic book movies really worry about storylines?? Should they? Yes!! But it's from a comic book!!! Not to mention, is the Fantastic 4 ever had real character studies going on in the comic...not so much!! This movie is sheer play time...and Jessica Alba...you know, play time.

first of all sorry for my english, i try to write correctly. I'm a long time FF reader and fan, i own both US and italian issues as well as of many other comic series. I love Miller's as well. I think i will definitely go to see this movie and i am positive about the final result. This new japan trailer is pretty cool, many also are the hints for old fans and some good tricks, let me use this word, to appeal the new ones. Not necessary people who go to watch a comic movie is a fan of the same comic, we have to remember anyway once on screen this is not a comic book anymore, but a movie inspired to it, from it. I liked SinCity as well as batman begins, and even if i think Burton got the real Batman, BB is the third movie i must own on the bat man. If they make a movie sticking the much closer possible to the comic, example SinCity, somebody will say that this is not a movie, just looks like a cartoon. If they do a movie to appeal both kids (the primal source income in comic movies) and adults, somebody will say this is crap. I think it's difficult for non comics fans to understand exactly all kinds of comic movies, Take for example Hellboy or Hulk. According to me both well done, but the main purpose for a Company like WB or 20th is to get the highest number of people to watch the movie, no matter if they know the comic or the story. I definitely think FF is a nice movie, i will go to see and anyway i'll talk after, also if somebody doesn't like a movie may of course avoid it. Anyway i have only one little thing to say and it's about Mr fantastic, we know he is a brain guy but from what i've seen and read he has less space in the whole movie in terms of actions. Some more about him would be really appreciated i guess. Saluti Uagli
