wow. many good shows in that list. I even liked Clarissa explains it all, back when Melissa Joan Hart didn't suck. I am overwhelmed by the amount of money that my compulsion for owning tv box sets will force me to spend this month. I dont think I have the resources. by the way Open Face was the greatest tv show villain of all time. Long live news radio, best sitcom ever.

It's a shame that Phil Hartman was murdered by his psycho-wife. The series was really starting to catch on in its fourth season. Hartman would have gone on to even greater things in the movies had he lived. :(

Definitely one of the better sitcoms to come out of television (one that constantly got ripped off by other office sitcoms at the time like Spin City and Suddenly Susan). Wasn't really able to get over the loss of Phil Hartman, but those 4 seasons with him easily rank up there with any other sitcom, glad to see it on DVD.

Oh yeah, I have been waiting for this day! "NewsRadio" was my very favorite show, and though gone, it still is. I guess that's what they mean by enduring time. My favorite character was, hmm, all of them together? It's hard to choose because this cast complemented each other so very well. It would not have worked so beautifully without each of them and all their quirks and eccentricies. My favorite relationship was Bill and Dave. I loved them. I think about when Bill was walking around with his cane, as Dave said - such an affectation - and then it went missing, and he accuses Dave of stealing it. And then the sandwich machine one, where Bill loves the sandwiches so much, he wants to save it, and Dave meets his nemesis - that video game from his college days. Oh man. And the relationship between Lisa and Dave too - it was written so right. Crazy and secret, and eventually to cause some chaos in the office, with everyone in their business. LOL. I can't wait to get my copy. Thank you, finally, for releasing it. It's about time!!! Look at how happy we all are. :)
So nice, they had to name him twice!

Newsradio *was* one of the top sitcoms of the 90's. While Hartman's senseless death (one of the few celeb deaths to move me to tears) crippled the show in it's lackluster 5th season (adding the unamusing Jon Lovitz as basically the same whiny character as Andy Dick's gloriously bizarre Matthew threw the show completely off-balance, and the final episode was a real downer), the first four seasons are amongst the funniest sitcommery of the 90's. You had the riotous "goofy ball" episode ("What's it saying?" ~ "GUH! GUH!"), Hartman's Rocket Fuel Malt Liquor radio spots ("Gazizza, my Doznoufus!"), Matthew's Kramer-shaming physical slapstick, and the eye-candy appeal of the 30-year-old Maura Tierney (she's *still* a babe, but in that first season of Newsradio...yow), the perky Vicki Lewis ("I hate to tell you this, but there's a perky redhead in *every* office" ~ "Tell me about it!") and the voluptuous Khandi Alexander and you had a recipe for surreal greatness. Plus the third (fourth?) season had a running guest role for a pre-Gilmore Girls Lauren Graham, and Stephen Root's Jimmy James ("The man so nice they...named him twice") remais one of the great sitcom characters. I still laugh like a loon during his recital of "super karate monkey death car". The set sounds great with 20 commentaries (Simms postponed the release from February of 2004 just to insure that there would be some extras). Oh, and Super Friends deserves a mention, but not vol. 3 of Batman: TAS? And Salma Hayek appeared naked on Dream On?!?

Is that the producers and writers tried to make him an insane goofball. What they should have done is made him even *more* obnoxious and vain than the Hartman character.

You say you're a fan of US sitcoms. Well, the fanboy love in this talkback is not hype - NEWSRADIO was indeed the funniest thing on television when it was on. What to expect? Well number 1 for me would be Phil Hartman in his comedic prime. Other than that this is an incredibly smart office comedy. Think THE OFFICE, only the boss is actually competent and it's everyone else that's unhinged. Every character is perfectly cast and entertaining to watch. I never buy TV DVDs (other than anime) but I'm buying this. SEINFELD and SIMPSONS? Great shows, but they're replayed endlessly in syndication, so what's the point of owning? NEWSRADIO is fucking gone except for this DVD, which is a shame since it's the best work that Hartman, Foley, Tierney, Dick, Root, Rogan, and that chick that bangs Nick Nolte have ever done.

this show was brilliant. so many classic episodes. I have been waiting for this set for so long and am happy this day has finally arrived. the roomies and I used to watch this show all the time. then i got the girlfriend hooked on it. we were all sad when hartman was killed, the show was still funny but just wasn't the same after his death. after it was cancelled we would watch the reruns late at night in syndication then on Bravo. but now I must add this to my collection and will surprise the girlfriend with it this weekend.

1) Before "Arrested Development," "NewsRadio" was the show sustaining the checkbooks of "Ben Stiller"/"Mr. Show" cast-offs. 2) Before Tina Fey, Maura Tierney was a geek sex symbol. 3) Phil Hartman. 4) Jimmy James is the closest thing to an American version of David Brent that we're going to get. 5) Jimmy James: "Oh, Johnny, by the way, you know when I told you you'd lost some weight?" Johnny Johnson: "Yeah?" Jimmy James: "Well, I lied, you look like Hell, go find a treadmill, you fat son of a bitch." 6) And a million other lines that you need to hear to truly appreciate.

I agree that NewsRadio is one of the ebst sitcoms around, years 3 and 4 beign especially wonderful. One of my favorite sight gags ever is from the episode where there is a talent show and Dave is throwing knives. He meets his rival and becomes quite nervous, but continues to practice throwing knives at Lisa. "Will you be okay?" "Oh, I'm sure I'll be fine.". It shows him throwing a knife, completely missing Lisa, and shattering a window in the background, and then it immediately cuts to the repalcement act, Matthew doing ventriloquism..badly. Does ANYONE have any idea when season 3 will be released?
Joe's last name is Garrelli?

One of Newsradio's running gags that I always got a kick out of was whenever Joe's last name was mentioned whoever was standing nearby, "Joe's last name is Garrelli?" Also the show's slow maneuvers to make sure everyone in the cast got to say "bitch." Lots of great episodes I could fill this talkback with, good times, good times. I loved this show, but its rare I find someone who even remembers it, its nice to see Newsradio getting love here.

Helped me through a lot of night-shifts. Not seen an episode in 4 years but it sticks in the mind - The episode where Bill gets that handyman guy (Joe?) to make him a stun-gun to protect himself from a stalker. And the afforementioned sandwich one. Is Maura any relation to the late Lawrence? Man, I still miss Phil Hartman. He and Farley could have ruled the world.

The greatest running gag in sit-coms was Jimmy James list of potential future wives. I forget exactly what he called it. But, it was something like that. As good as Phil Hartman, Andy Dick, and, yes, even Joe Rogan were in this show, Jimmy James was the man.
