I know I should read all the reviews and talkback entries before posting, but the reviewer missed a little tiny plot point of Desolation Jones. He doesn't do detective work FOR the ex-spy community, he does work for people who have been screwed by the ex-spy community. That made this really really really really really really clear. He gave a whole damn speech on the subject.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com /takeaction/877468729 Petition to boycott fake Valiant products Acclaim Entertainment, which purchased Valiant/Voyager Communications Inc. in 1994, filed for bankruptcy in late 2004. The rights to the Acclaim/Valiant comics were auctioned in court on April 12th, 2005. A concealed shell company, Valiant Intellectual Properties LLC ("VIP LLC"), was formed on March 30th, 2005 and on March 31st, 2005 attempted to trademark the Valiant name and several Valiant titles (Secret Weapons, Outcast, Rai and the Future Force, Deathmate, Quantum & Woody, Harbinger, Punx, Dr. Mirage, Eternal Warrior, Ninjak, Bloodshot, The Visitor and The Elementals) while the courts were sorting out the scheduled bankruptcy sale auction and asset details. According to a number of intellectual property experts, the timing of their applications and their lack of a bid at the auction makes it clear that they intend to either blackmail the auction winners or push their own books under the guise of the originals. Intellectual property professionals have been quoted as saying "VIP LLC are stinking of bad faith" and "VIP are conducting borderline outright thievery." VIP LLC was NOT EVEN PRESENT at the Acclaim auction. There is a remote possibility that VIP LLC could be granted some trademarks as Valiant has not been in business for a number of years. Unfortunately, this matter will not be resolved anytime soon as it takes at least six months for the applications to be reviewed by the US Patent and Trademark Office. If granted any of the trademarks, the VIP LLC products would need content that is 100% different than anything known in the Valiant universe. They intend to play off the reputation of a title and sell a product that has no connection to it. Rai would be anything BUT the sole protector of a future Japan - think a crime fighting loaf of rye bread. VIP LLC would essentially be DESTROYING Valiant as we know it to make a quick buck and in the process they would devalue the recognition and goodwill of the titles. They would ruin any hope of them returning as we remembered them. The entire industry recognized the importance of the sale on April 12th, 2005. There were three different bidding parties who came in good faith to become legitimate owners of the Valiant and Acclaim properties and bid close to $1 million. The RIGHTFUL OWNER of the Valiant and Acclaim titles should be whoever signed on the dotted line with the Acclaim bankruptcy trustees. Reliable sources have confirmed that VIP LLC intends to exploit these titles without their copyrights. Through the little information that has become publicly available, we do know that VIP LLC is connected to the comics industry but continue to work hard to keep their identities hidden for fear of damaging their professional and personal reputations. The prospect that someone out there is under the impression that spending a couple thousand dollars on a group of trademarks in an attempt to deceive the fans into thinking they are the 'legitimate owners' of the copyrights (when they are actually destroying Valiant and ruining any hope of it ever returning) is absolutely unacceptable. BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE we must show VIP LLC that we will not stand for this. WE have the power to alter the outcome of this situation and help bring back the Valiant characters as we remember them. We can do this threatening to boycott any VIP LLC products they intend to produce AND, if their true identites are revealed, any other products they produce. Now is the time for Valiant fans, Acclaim fans, and comic book fans of all types to come together and stand up for what we believe in. Please sign the petition

Great (or at least interesting to read) reviews as always, guys, but for next week I hope someone reviews the latest part of I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT THE JUSTICE LEAGUE. I know the last reviewer (Buzz, I think?) felt it's kind of out-of-place and dated, but I think that this story has more power and heart than ten "Countdowns." I actually got misty at this latest issue. It was really powerful stuff, in my opinion, and in a time where superhero comics are kinda losing their fun, it's books like this and BATMAN: DARK DETECTIVE (another "dated" book, I suppose) that remind me why I'm a comic fan. I'm too young to have grown up with the original runs of either JLI or Englehart's Batman, but these are the kinds of books I want to see more of on a weekly basis, not the lazy cheap shock-value storytelling going on today. Any idiot can kill off and ruin characters, make them "dark" and whatnot. What's going on in ICBINTJL and B:DD is far more rewarding and satisfying, and I just hope books like these get the attention they deserve.

I agree that it sucks. The writer knew that there was no way he could sustain an interesting story so he just made it a hack and slash comic. And since it's a comic, he did things that would get laughed at in a movie. The shitting your own head was just one of those kills. Another was Jason punching a guy in the face so hard that the guy's head flies off, bounces off 4 or 5 trees, then lands back at Jason's feet. At least there was boobs in it, since gratuitous tit shots are a common thing in Friday movies (not that I'm complaining).

Anybody keeping track of how many times the Punisher has gone to prison to catch a baddy. Maybe the "his family's killer" thing adds a little spice, but not much. After reading some of Garth's other Punisher stuff, I'm just glad to hear he's actually taking the character seriously though. I loved Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe and The End, but his monthly issues have left a little to be desired............And, when exactly did JSA get good (issue wise). The first few issues seemed a little silly, and the art was crap-a-licious, so I dropped it. Talking to my comic book guy recently, I was surprised to hear it's now one of DC's most popular books.

I'm reading Breach; Byrne Art Sucks; Winnick Writing Sucks

All summarized in the subject. I said it. Byrne should stick to writing. All of the faces he draws look exactly alike. So much so that it took 3 issues before I realized Cassie Sandsmark was a little GIRL in his Wonder Woman series. Winnick, well, I've dropped almost everything he's written. Should have stuck with writing more Barry Ween. Yes, I'm reading Breach. Resurrection Man (but not the over-exposed Body Doubles), Chase, and Major Bummer were all fantastic comics. Especially the art on Major Bummer. I still don't know if that was set in a dark corner of the DCU.

Cameron Chase is coming back to the DCU in the next month or two. If you're not already reading MANHUNTER, start picking it up. It's got some cool ideas going on there, and Cameron is gonna show up real soon over there. Man, if they can work in Clevenger from BLOODHOUND I'll be a pretty happy guy. Seeing those three characters interact (butting heads, not just a non-powered team-up) would be pretty sweet. The one cool thing to come out of CHASE is that even if it was cancelled, the DC SECRET FILES for a few years after that were always about the DEO's files and Chase trying to track down info on the various powered members of the DCU. It was a pretty cool approach and I got my Chase fix. I'm definitely looking forward to her turning up in MANHUNTER.

Claremont is awful
by xsi kal
May 19th, 2005
05:40:45 PM
Like most comic book readers of my generation, I grew up on Claremont's X-men books and, for the most part, enjoyed them, dangling plot threads not withstanding. But I'm not 10 anymore. When he came back to the X-Men, I was depressed to find that, as a writer, he has not grown at all. In fact, within 2-3 issues, he'd resurrected all of the inane plot points and ridiculous dialogue that characterized the worst of his earlier runs. I'd even take Chuck Austen over Claremont, and that's just a mean thing to say about any writer. Consequently, I didn't bother following this run of Excalibur, and I can't say I'll miss it now that it's cancelled. I just don't think it should be too much to ask that storylines and characters be a little bit more sophisticated now than they were in the 80s. (As an aside, I really enjoyed Desolation Jones)

It's because Byrne inked the cover himself. He's a LOUSY inker. Especially when he's inking himself. He's a great penciller and his art ALWAYS looks better when someone else is inking him...which can be rare. Or at least it was in the past. Now it seems like DC is getting other people to ink his stuff which is a GREAT idea. Also, is it me or is it really strange that this issue of Action Comics comes across as written by old-school Byrne? Maybe it's the art but Gail Simone's writing style came across as VERY much like the way Byrne used to write in his heyday when he used to know how to piece a story together that people could actually care about...

Bug doesn't have the ability to ban you, but in the next version of this site, we'll deputize many of the readers and let the community handle it. The reason you get kicked is because you go after the writers and are generally a jerkwad. If you have a gripe about a title, please let us hear it, but don't go attacking the hard work that the AICN Comics guys put in each week. They do it for the love of comics, and you go and ruin it for everyone. Bug and crew have gotten me excited about comics again and even though I hadn't read one in years, I'm now going back to my favorite store here in Austin and having them pull my titles each week. So, just be cool, let us know what your opinions are about the titles themselves. You should post your pull list or your own recommendations. I'd go buy a title that you'd recommend if you take the time to let us know what you liked or didn't like instead of kicking others in the balls.

So SeeTrhoughThis and Ego-Popper were the same person! That explains so much. I actually think Ambush is the best reviewer here, but I hope he didn't ban Ego_Popper for defending Bendis. Not that I like Bendis, or that I liked E.P. aka S.T.T. since he/she attacked me in the past. But he/she did provoke this particular post. Now, I do have a lot to say about the comics that came out this week, bought 14 comics, but last week I only bought three, and Rann-Thanagar War was one. I liked it but the review said everything so I had no more to add. With Young Avengers, Exiles, Guardian, JLA Classified, Teen Titans, Spidey/Torch I have plenty to spout off about. Spider- Man Breakout was a good one, too.

I can also read the agreement we all had to accept when we signed up to post here. The AICN boards are among the most liberal you'll find anywhere, actually--this shit never woulda flown at Millar's site, or Quesada's, or Newsarama's, or anybody elses' for that matter. When you continually level unsubstantiated attacks, however, including one of which dropped the n-bomb for no reason, you can expect to be banned. It's pretty simple, really: show a little respect and try to follow the rules. If you're too dense to know where the line between criticizing somebody and attacking them lies, the problem's with you, not the dozens of people you alienate on a weekly basis. Truth is, nothing has a chilling affect on talkbacks quite like a reactionary jerk who shows up, derails the conversation and turns it into a shouting match. Hell, there are contributors to this site (and column and talkback) who have backed off for exactly this reason. Long story short: act like a schmuck and you're gonna get booted. Insulting the same people every week for the same off-topic BS gets you ignored, hated and kicked. Try behaving like an adult and you'll get a different response. Not bloody likely, of course...

I can't leave a fellow Paul Pope fan hangin', Gus, so here're his Batman projects that I know of: Most recently, he did a Robin story in SOLO #3 with Batman appearing briefly. He also did the "Berlin Batman" Elseworlds story in BATMAN CHRONICLES #11. He did the black-and-white back-up story to GOTHAM KNIGHTS #3, "Broken Nose", later collected in BATMAN: BLACK AND WHITE (volume 2, I think). Lastly, he drew issue 5 of a Batman mini called BATMAN: TURNING POINTS, written by Greg Rucka. Oh, and it's kinda tangential, but Pope did covers for CATWOMAN issues 5-9. If that's not everything, it's gotta be pretty damn close!
