She looks OK, but she's a damned awful actress. I'm never convinved by her. She's like an American Idol contestant or something- just lame and out of place no matter what she does. ---- My only gripes with the movie are the costume (every movie Batman costume has eye HOLES rather than blank lenses. NOT seeing Bruce's eyes is part what makes The Batman so frightening and inhuman), the ridiculous SUV Batmobile, and the clear ACTION MOVIE pace. WHY, oh why can't someone make a Batman movie that is a DETECTIVE noir flick, like "Se7en".

...at least about Baldwin. I always thought a pre-weight gain Alec was perfect for Bruce Wayne, which is where I really thought Keaton was miscast (although his jaw was a big pudgy in the Batsuit as well). Wayne needs to look like a multi-millionaire, and a dapper society one. Keaton looks like a wild-eyed freak. I don't agree that Burton had it locked down, though. The guy can be style over substance at times, and when the star of the movie is the Art Direction, you're in trouble. Secondly, Jack Nicholson, while entertaining, was just too big and too over the top for the film. The star should have been Batman. They didn't learn their lesson with Batman Returns, where the new villans were the focal point. At least DeVito and Pfeiffer nailed it though; I thought the psychology made the second film much better. Nolan will strike a perfect balance while giving us a very grey-shaded, conflicted hero. I'm not worried.

...and the rest of the "this will suck" brigade that has been slagging this project on here from day one? Suddenly everyone's a fan. THIS is the film of the summer and has been ever since a master film maker like Chris Nolan signed on the dotted line. It's just a shame it's taken this trailer to convince Mr Knowles and the rest. I've never really understood Harry's "eclectic" taste in films (Blade 2 anyone?) but from the very first day he has refused to give this film any backing. I guess WB weren't prepared to pay the AintitCool going rate these days, huh Harry? And it must've hurt when noone from this site was invited to London for the Begins press tour of the set the suits and the Batmobile, huh? Well I guess you're coming round just in time even if your praise above does seem to be through gritted teeth. I'll see Begins as many times as possible whereas I'll (seriously) wait for Ep III to come out on DVD. Why? Because I believe the efforts and talent of Christopher Nolan should be rewarded whereas my blind faith in Lucas ended the day Ewan Macgregor said filming The Phantom Menace was the most boring experience of his life!

But I hope Katie Holmes (i.e. that bitch from Dawson's Creek) dies at the end of this movie to save us from her in the sequel. However, I don't think it's likely because she's being set up as a more important character than, say, Vicki Vale. I too hope she doesn't bring the movie down in any way. But how can you argue with the rest of the cast? Fuck-king hell it's a great line-up! Something tells me the script can't have been too bad if all these greats signed up. I have a feeling Neeson is going to rock the world in this movie, especially because he's (well, anyone with half a brain can work out the twist) going to exhibit his evil side. The Scarecrow also looks sick. I would love Bruce to be played like Bateman, or at least similar to him. How fuck-ass funny would that be. Notice the similarity between the name Bateman and...well, just take out the 'e'. Rock on!!!!

Batman 1 and 2 suffered from what most Burton films suffer from (Sleepy Hollow aside oddly enough) and that's lack of story. It's all just very interesting window dressing. The Schumaucher films were an attempt to return the Bat franchise to its 60s camp TV show roots. Honestly, this looks like THE first decent Bat flick. Stellar cast, great director and (I hope) a story. I've not read the script but I like the dialog I hear in the trailer. It's not much to go on, but the lines sound well-crafted enough. I think THIS is going to be the film of the summer, even if it won't make as much as Episode III.

What's all this hoopla about the last four movies? This is a completely fresh start to the Batman series last time I heard! Who cares if Chris Nolan's Gotham doesn't look like Tim Burton's Gotham (Burton should be disregarded for handing the series over to Schumacher anyway), the important thing is to see if this movie is at all like the comics. Gotham City didn't have enormous statues holding up its observatories, it was just a steamy, grimy, crime-infested city. If Nolan can capture the Frank Miller or Jeph Loeb style Batman, then we'll have a winner. Tim Burton's day in Gotham has come and gone.

I keep hearing about how wonderfully visionary Tim Burton's version of Batman was for, what, 15 years now, and I just have to chime in. Burton Totally missed the point with who Batman/ Bruce Wayne was. Sure, his vision of Gotham City was cool, but the rest sucked. Case in point: Batman got his ass handed to him by every third rate hood in the first two films, and had to rely on his gadgets (go go gadget grappling gun) to get him out of trouble. In the comics, Bruce Wayne trained for years to become the best martial artist in the world. He is the baddest of the bad when it comes to a scrap. Yet, every time he turned around (without turning his head BTW) he was getting his ass kicked, or getting shot and damn near unmasked. Keaton, who is a great actor in my opinion, was TOTALLY wrong for the part. Nicholson was TOTALLY wrong for the joker, and didn't have the scariness of the psychotic Joker of the comics. Bat Nipples. Not until Batman Forever did we get a Batman who could kick a little ass. (But still had nipples) Let's not even start with Batman and Robin... I feel sorry for Clooney, who I think could have been a great Bruce Wayne with a halfway decent script. Here's hoping that this June I will FINALLY get the Bat film I've been waiting for since I was 5 years old. BURTON IS A HACK! 'NUFF SAID!

I know that many people dont like the suit. I have to admit I'm not all that crazy about it either. I like the grey cloth look of the Dead End shoot. BUT... what may be interestin gis to see why Batman switches from one (lack of protection) to the other rubberized suit. As for the movie, while not knowing the details of the script it looks pretty darn good based on cast and trailers and of course the director. The batmobile, is what I think Miller had in mind in the Dark Knight returns series. So i can live with that. More realistic than a supped up 'vette could look. Think of it... his car HAS to be able to take and give a pounding. Plus SUV's are all the craze these days. Lets just hope that this move will deliver.....

Models vs. CGI
by ChicagoRonin
Apr 28th, 2005
12:01:44 AM
One thing that strikes me about the trailers is the apparently minimal use of (obvious) CGI. I've heard the Nolan is a big "Blade Runner" fan and that has influenced his making of "Batman Begins." It looks like Nolan's using a lot of good old-fashioned movie virtues like sets, costuming and stunts to bring Batman and his world to life. Is it just me? Aside from the Bats and one or two model-looking shots of an "El" train, it looks like the visual effects are being refreshingly restrained.

it strikes me at this point that Bales first film, Empire of the Sun, and his most famous till now, American Psycho, are already kind of the Batman story. He has no problem standing in front of a room of his peers and tell them to avoid the Hollywood machine like the plague, yet he's the first guy to put on a cheerleaders outfit and wave his pompoms when the Hollywood money truck backs up to his door. Now lets talk about the fact that he has never wrote a workable script. He wrote a Batman script that Darren Aronofsky was supposed to direct, but it was so bad the whole thing was dropped. Now lets touch on the fact that he accepted a directing credit on Sincity, yet all he did was sit in a corner and draw pictures all fucking day. He even went on record as saying that he didn't even know what directing was until Qt got on set. If you even had an inkling as to how this stuff worked you wouldn't have opened your yap and looked like a douche bag. Congrats though, now everyone here knows it.

I don't know how the complete product will be received or whether or not the most important parts of the movie were wasted on this preview, but whoever cut this should be very proud of themselves: it succeeds in pretty much every way a trailer could hope to. Sadly, Katie Holmes' lines remain mostly rubbish.

Ok, now I ove the 1st Batman as much as we all do, but how much of that is rooted in child nostalga? I am in now way saying anything bad about that one, but this looks to be what I always hoped for in a Batman flick. One of the smartest directors around, and not once scene looks to have any campy moments from any of the cast. A very serious story with such a great backstory to Bruce to make us understand why when he fights, he can take more than the average man ever could. A bruce Lee of sorts with all the psychosis behind it. This just looks plain incredible, nd yes Christian Balse has the chops to handle it. Is there a wonder why we remember him so much for how much we hated his character in American Psycho It wasnt because he played it bad, but because he played it spot on. My most anticipated movie of the year, (...and I am a Star Wars Nut!)

WHATEVER! 9)EVERY girl batman screws doesn't have to learn his "secret" identity 10)keep the evil henchmen to a minimum 11)resist the urge to use every bad pun in the book. 12)NO gratuitus (spellcheck) ass or nipple shots (unless from a female)lol... we will tear your soul apart... anyways im sure there are more...let the other fanboys make their own list

So he has to lay the law down, show off his new gadgets like james bond, save the girl and save the day in gotham once again. This lame story keeps repeating. I see nothing new here. This story line is way to close to "walking tall" if you ask me.

It isn't a coincidence. Remember Leia's holographic message? After receiving the stolen plans for the Death Star, Leia was swinging by Tatooine to pick up "general Kenobi" and bring him to Alderaan. The Emperor had dissolved the senate and times called for drastic measures. Also, I don't think R2's memory gets wiped since he obviously is more reliable than Threepio and in ANH he demonstrates knowledge of Kenobi.

Every great movie that could be a series is turned into crap after the first movie. Batman 2,3,4 Superman 3,4, the Crow sequals all crap. When will the people in hollywood learn to leave good franchises alone? So far, Spiderman and X-men have had good sequels, but it is only a matter of time I believe.

Why is it that so many people on these Talkbacks who claim to know exactly how to make the definitive Batman are also adamantly against Robin? The DEFINITIVE Batman, as established by Bob Kane & presented in the comics has had a Robin for the better part of sixty years. Even Frank Miller, who many use as their "definitive" view of Batman gave him a Robin. Obviously not in this movie, as Batman's origin comes before Robin's. But Robin is an essential part of the myths as Alfred, Gordon, Joker, etc. Sorry, fanboys. If you want it done right, you're going to have to deal with Robin.

Quit complaing about the suit. Batman is smart, brilliant even. Why would a brilliant person with absolutely no superpowers think it's a good idea to go fight crime in spandex? Yes, he does it in the comics, but in case you can't tell (and I figure most of you can't and won't), they're different storytelling mediums. Also, Batman's comic design comes from 1939 when comics didn't have to be realistic since they were aimed at 5 year olds. Live in the now, folks.

And the more I think about it the more I'm convinced he (John Byrne) is right. Byrne's point is that what makes Batman so freakin' scary to criminals is that he's just a dude dressed up like a bat. No invulverability, no armor plating, just a guy who they can't kill, even though they've always got him outmanned and outgunned. I know Batman uses gadgets, but the gadgets should be secondary to the fact that he's really just a regular guy who kicks all kinds of ass and solves crimes using his detective skills. Ah, well, this still looks really good - and we've seen that Nolan can do an interesting detective story (Memento) so maybe there's hope.

I'm not sure if this is going to be good. Parts of the trailer look interesting and sometimes it looks only mildly better than that mess Tim Burton made in the 80s/90s of Batman (I won't even go to the depths of the ambiguously gay Batman Schumacher did). I hate the suit -- like all the other suits, it looks heavy and inflexible. Batman is supposed to be agile and that looks the complete opposite. Besides the whole thing about Batman is that he puts his life on the line -- that big heavy, what I'm sure is supposed to be bullet-proof suit removes that element of danger. I hate the tank/car...I've hated all the Batmobiles (with the exception of the Chevy from the '60s). The one thing that does look really good about the film is the cinematography. Also, there are good actors in it (though Katie Holmes looks a little plain).

I'm excited for it. I agree their should be no love interest, especially if its First Daughter. They should just hint that Bruce is sleeping around w/ hot rich chicks but can't be faithful to any of them. I don't think Gotham City should look EXACTLY like Burton's but it should definitely look a lot more Gothic/Rust Beltish. I can live w/ the Bat Hummer but couldn't they at least make it look like its moving a little faster? And what's w/ the Scarecrow's mask? They have a major chance to save money & just use a nasty burlap sack & instead they have some swirly CGI mess straight out of one of the Mummy flicks. Other than what I just said, BRING IT!!!!! And if Nolan does more batfilms, I guarantee Guy Pearce will be Harvy Dent. Wouldn't surprise me if he pops up as Harvy Dent in Returns. I can only hope Crispin Glover gets to play the Joker. Screw Adrian Brody.

So whattya think of this brown-sepia color tone idea for this "Batman"? Burton went for the blues and the blacks (plus, some purples); Schumacher made everything look like a plastic CGI rainbow. Obviously, somebody figures Batman should be brown this time around. Look at all the brown movie posters to back up the brown look of the movie. Personally, I've never much pictured Batman's world as brown. But they want to separate from the past, I guess.

I agree with those who didn't care much for Burton's vision of Batman. The overall look of Gotham was too twisted, and freakish for my taste. And Keaton just didn't look like a handsom millionair playboy. When Dini, and Timm unleashed 'the animated series', I became more connected with Batman's world than ever before. The art deco style backgrounds looked wonderful, and Batman's presence was strongly felt thanks to Kevin Conroy's voice acting. None of the previous 'Batman' films have captured the true spirit of the character like the cartoon did. So far, 'Batman Begins' looks like it'll be the one 'Batman' film that get it right this time.

When we were getting horrible batman films (Burton included)we were at least getting a exellent animated series. Now that we are getting a good batman film we are getting a HORRIBLE animated series. I know that it sounds like a fair trade, but while we are eating popcorn and watching a high quality movie (fingers crossed, the average joe TV viewer will keep getting pumped with horrid animation and terrible one-liners that rival (dare I say it) Batman and Robin. "The" Batman should have gotten cancelled after it's first 3 episodes. We seriously need to get this show off the air. Although it is only my opinion that the script sucks and the majority of people that read the script say it's good, this film still sucks, because i'm just better than everyone else. I also think that goyer and nolan are hacks even though they made great films like Momento, Blade, and Dark City. I think that everyone that disagrees with what I say sucks. Furthermore, I will continue to bitch and moan about every little problem I have with the production of this film i haven't seen until everyone on the planet agrees with me. I think superheros are stupid, but i still claim to be a batman fan because he isn't a superhero, even though superheros don't have to have superpowers. I also loooove to post atleast 100 times on every Batman talkback. I am also a big fan of Hitler.

this film suddenly crept past star wars in my 'most want it now!!!' list... whenever i see any trailer for this film it feels like im seeing batman for the first time.......yeah burton did batman, but it was TIM BURTONS BATMAN.... it wasnt the same... he made a tim burton film about a bat man, not an adaptation of an existing story... this just brings back memories of Millers Year One... and i wants it bad

it's Frank millers fault that you didn't get any of his books. Maybe you need to learn how to read. Maybe you should also learn that Frank Miller is a best selling writter, brought batman back to his dark roots after the adam west camp crap, and just completed a high grossing film that was the number one movie in america. Without Miller there would have been no dark batman, no paul dini animated series, no dark batman movies, and probably no batman begins. So as far as the majority of batman, comic, and movie fans are concerned, your opinion isn't worth shit.

Miller's writings are CHILDISH at best. Dark Batman existed from the beginning. You tool. You smell like shit and piss and cum all mixed together, no wonder you revel in the foolish medium of comic books. You're a twat, a twat in a hat, raping a cat. Frank Miller has all the skills of a Irishman. NONE. My favorite part of Sin City was when Mickey Rooney shot Frank Miller in the face. Awesome.

Batman was great, Batman Returns was great (there were no others), and Frank Miller is- uhhh, great. Why? This: In Dark Knight Returns he added a nice touch to compensate for the 'cloth costume'. When Bats gets shot in the chest- revealing kevlar armour underneath- he refers to the bat symbol on his chest: 'Why do you think I wear a target?'

Cloth is an idiotic fabric for a superhero. You wanted mechanical webshooters too, you benders. I have words to say to you. The words are these: You are a paedophile. You are a nonce. You're a perv. You're a slot badger. You're a two pin din plug. You're a bush dodger. You're a small bean regarder. You're a unabummer. You're a nut administrator. You're a bent ref. You're The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. You're a fence vole. You're a free willy. You're a chimney bottler. You're a bunty man. You're a shrub rocketeer. There's no way that Frank Miller is talented. He's just a man with a pen who cannot draw. The best drawings are done NOT by Frank Miller but by his Asian slaves that color it in for him.

how can you say Dark Batman has existed from the begining?! go read early batman! go watch everysingle sence where adam west has been behind the mask! Batman has been fucked around with a hell of a lot and takes people like Miller and Chris Nolan to get him back on track so others will follow. Millar seriously realigned the character and put it back on track. hopfully this film will do the same.

If he wasn't dark from the beginning then how could Miller put him "back on track"? Surely he'd be putting him on an entirely new track? I hope to God you are never employed by a railroad company. You'd have caused a tragedy in your first week on the job. Do you have difficulty operating other kinds of machinery, too? I reckon you do!

This movie is going to rule....no question...I love the realistic approach...absolutely love it...I love the suit...I love the TUMBLER...I love the cast...this movie cant go wrong...but what I hate are those fucking bastards who sit and bash Tim Burton's two films. I love the first two. And to those comic fans who bitch about Christopher Nolan not getting Batman right...eat it....comic and film are two different mediums...as many posters have stated before...adaptation is the key word....there will be differences...but the spirit remains...and that is key...I personally dont want to see a Batman who is as fast as Spider-man...But most of all...I hate those who say the unrated Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is the best Batman film to date...ahhh..makes me scream....nothing with melissa joan hart will EVER be GOOD...EVER!!!!....my ranting is done.

Finally, somebody knows his shit about Batman. Frank Miller did jack all. He watched The French Connection and decided he'd put Batman in it. He then wrote a story which featured the infamous "Gordon has a beer and cheets on his wife" which was pretty much the plot of Year One. He turned Catwoman into some boring whore with a heart of gold (LIKE EVERY OTHER FEMALE CHARACTER IN HIS BOOKS, the fucking pervert) and everyone called him a visionary. What a bore. This new Batman Begins film will kick seven shades of shit out of Batman: Year One. So smell my crotch and lick my choad. It's going to be a tasty treat.

in 1930 theres only so far you could go. All comics evolve into something they didnt start with. back at the start of batman (which i have read) the general tone is darker than most comics of the time, but obviously if you released the same issues now they'd seem tame compared to what we see in now. What i meant by 'back on track' comment was more that the character came back to its original evolution, after being contaminated by being so commersialized. the batman TV show wasnt even a glimmer of REAL batman, BUT it was successful and it took a while for the comic to get away from the image this it created. No comic ever stays the same, it evolves with every new writer and with the needs of its readers. Frank miller provded what people wanted and had been wait for for a long time.

Frank Miller's Dark Knight

I liked Dark Knight Returns as much as anybody - but haven't we had enough of the "dark, brooding, no sense of humor, death ninja" Batman comics? I'm not saying the movie needs to go back to Adam West Camp or (shudder) Joel Shumaker Ice Capades, but come on, isn't the whole point of dressing up like a bat and beating the piss out of criminals a way of purging those demons? Some of you above are right - Batman WAS originally very Dark. But that's the point: BATMAN was dark. Bruce Wayne drank, smoked, dated, and even managed to crack a joke once in a while while running Wayne Industries. That's why the "does it come in black" line is so encouraging. As for Dark Knight Returns, I think Miller's WHOLE POINT was that when Batman retired, Bruce Wayne went a little nuts because he wasn't out there kicking the crap out of street thugs anymore. And it seems like every person who's written Batman comics since DKR came out never understood that.

I understand not liking an artist or a writer (everyone hates somebody), but if you say they're not good at writing or drawing, you should be able to demonstrate that you can do better. If you can't draw or write yourself, you should admit that it's just a matter of taste. Any links so we can sample your work?

I think the best version of the joker to be in the next movie should be Mark Hamill's. His Joker is perfect in everyway. Hmmm...maybe HE should play the Joker.... He isn't THAT old. Actually... Joker is suppose to be around late 40s to early 50s... which is how old Mark is... "That's it... That's what I like to see... A NICE BIG SMILE".-Mark Hamill's Joker right before he kills an old man and puts a bomb inside him in BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM.

Indeed, that trailer is what is defined as... THE SHIT. We really might have, for the first time in live action, a REAL Batman villain. That makes me giddy as a hamster in a trick-or-treat bag! I really would like to see some Oldman action though. Oh, and as a SUV hating, tree hugger with a few shads of the hippy in me, (not to mention some wild nights with some FINE ass trees) I would just like to say that the Bat Mobile is scarlett Johansson grad A SEXY. So go whip it out to a hungry yak calf. Scatter-gun bashing would be worst thing since trolls if it weren't for the fact that it is so often done BY trolls. Anyway, film looks good. You idiot. If I was gay I'd be delighted with the new Superman suit. But I'm not gay. But I am delighted with the new Superman suit. And I like Batman's abs. I am gay. Wait. Hold on one second. Wait. Just hold on a second. You smell of poo poo and wee wee. That, I think, is what my original point was before I got confused. Are you confused? I suggest you are gender confused. Like one of those she-hes or "shims" that you see in Bangkok. Batman should go to Bangkok for an adventure. If Frank Miller drew a comic about Bangkok it'd be full of ladyboy whores with a heart of gold. He'd have a sub-section of the city where ladyboys run the roost, throwing fake Rolexes and factory-damaged Gap sweatshirts at enemies. "Nobody touches Glen or Glenda," one of his hard-bitten anti-heroes would say. And then someone would eat noodles. I have had twenty-one years experience drawing comic books. Let me tell you, they're a piece of piss. You just draw some big-titted fantasy figure sleeping in a slinky silk nightie and in slinky silk sheets. Then you get the hero to return with big large bandages on his muscular frame. The woman tends to his wounds. He does not pay attention to the woman because he is too cool. Instead, he has a monologue... IN HIS BRAIN. It goes something like this: "The city. So dark tonight. So teeming with scum. So... alive. The Buttchaser. I've never had an enemy with such prowess. Those feet. Those hands. Those... testicles. My God. Am I redundant? How can I beat him? Wait. Stop. You must beat him. Yeah... Look at yourself. You can beat him. You can. You must. For her. For her and for the baby inside of her. Yeah. You can do it." Let me tell you, it's like writing a fucking soap opera except without the skill.

...want...to ignore...can't...why..? I will say that you're pretty funny. But your misguided animosity kills the comedy. If you found a target worthy of such venom, someone who isn't respected by his peers, like Jimmy Fallon or Tim Story, you might even be hilarious in a Patton Oswalt/Bill Hicks way (though not AS hilarious as them, because few are). Think of it this way. Even though you think Frank Miller sucks (Dave Sim's impression of him in Cerebus is spot on and hilarious), most every accoplished, highly respected comic book writer and artist think that he's brilliant. Even smart and funny people like you have sometimes got to admit that it's just a matter of taste. Cause if you can't, then you stop being "strange, annoying, but sometimes funny and smart" guy, and you become just another asshole. Don't be an asshole, bintman.

If you think you can draw better than Miller, prove it. Miller sucks? Millions and millions of comic sales tell me otherwise. And since I am a huge Miller fan I find what you say about him to be offensive and unjust. But you know what? But that Dark Knight 2 crap sucked big-time. Still annoyed they went for the same black rubber costume. Also, is this film in continuity with the previous series? Because if it is, why does Batman ditch the abilty to turn his neck? And will the next Batman film also be set before Burton's films? If they bring in the Joker or any of the villains from the 80s/90s movies, are we supposed to disregard their last screen appearance? Wait, I've turned into Comic-Book Guy.

If it was in continuity with the other series, I think it would be called "Batman Continues" instead of Batman Begins. Remember in the first movie (which had a few nice moments, but otherwise was simply horrible, thanks mostly to the screenplay), no one had heard of Bats before. And DK2 is good if you read it as a comedy. No, really.

Personally, i loved Burton's Batman films. However, i always thought that the Batman portrayed in by Adam West and in the comics in the late 80's/early 90's was far too much of a goody-two shoes. How about someone doing a film about Azrael?
